Volume 30 Number 7 6 June 2014 Dear Parents/Guardians, Students & Friends of SFX Perhaps one of the most applicable words for all generations would be from the prayer of St Francis. The St Francis to which this prayer is attributed is not St Francis Xavier, but St Francis of Assisi. However the internet tells me that the words were not actually penned by St Francis at all. Rather the prayer first became public around 1912, at the time of the First World War. Nevertheless, wherever they came from the message is still clear, powerful and applicable through all ages. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, truth; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. What confronts the reader immediately from these words is the emphasis on the other person. I am not the most important person and my life should not be all about getting whatever I can. Rather, we are a pathway to help other people. We are here to bring peace, forgiveness, faith, hope, joy and love. It s all very confronting and very demanding. Perhaps its also worth thinking about what the prayer is not saying. There is no mention that we should be an instrument of wealth, or fame, or attention, or glory, or power. No, these words have a completely different message from those that are frequently broadcast around the world. They stand in contrast to the consumerism and individualism that has infiltrated the modern world. This is why we should applaud the actions of those who take the time to help other people. I can see this when our students offer to help on the Night Care Van, or donate blood, or give money during the St Vincent De Paul fund raising campaign, or help students in the local primary schools. Volume 30 Number 7 6 June 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians, Students & Friends of SFX

Perhaps one of the most applicable words for all generations would be from the prayer of St Francis. The St

Francis to which this prayer is attributed is not St Francis Xavier, but St Francis of Assisi. However the internet

tells me that the words were not actually penned by St Francis at all. Rather the prayer first became public

around 1912, at the time of the First World War.

Nevertheless, wherever they came from the message is still clear, powerful and applicable through all ages.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is error, truth;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved, as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

What confronts the reader immediately from these words is the emphasis on the other person. I am not the most

important person and my life should not be all about getting whatever I can. Rather, we are a pathway to help

other people. We are here to bring peace, forgiveness, faith, hope, joy and love. It’s all very confronting and

very demanding.

Perhaps it’s also worth thinking about what the prayer is not saying. There is no mention that we should be an

instrument of wealth, or fame, or attention, or glory, or power. No, these words have a completely different

message from those that are frequently broadcast around the world. They stand in contrast to the consumerism

and individualism that has infiltrated the modern world.

This is why we should applaud the actions of those who take the time to help other people. I can see this when

our students offer to help on the Night Care Van, or donate blood, or give money during the St Vincent De Paul

fund raising campaign, or help students in the local primary schools.

Guest Midwife Presenters

in Year 11 Exploring Early

Childhood

Special guest presenters for our

Year 11 Exploring Early

Childhood students during the week prior to the

exams were Ms Jane Crosbie and Mrs Mandy

Hunter, both from the Belmont Midwifery Group

Practice and the Birth Centre Team Midwifery Unit

at John Hunter Hospital. It was a truly valuable

experience for our students to hear such

experienced midwives presenting information

about hospital births, home births, the natural

process of birthing, the positive experience of

birthing and the valuable postnatal care the services

provide for newborn babies and their parents.

With the Exploring Early Childhood course

focusing on the lives of young children from birth

to eight years of age. It was an informative

presentation from these midwives who certainly

work towards happy, healthy and safe beginnings

of life for newborns. We thank these ladies most

sincerely for their time and interest in our students

and their course.

Japanese Sister School Visit St Francis Xavier’s has had a

close relationship with Rakusei

Boys’ High School in Kyoto,

Japan, for the past 25 years. This

year they are again sending three boys to spend 10

days with us in Newcastle and I am looking for

three families who would be interested in opening

their home to a young Japanese visitor. Rakusei is

one of the most prestigious Catholic schools in the

Kansai region and the boys who come are always

chosen for their ability to speak English and their

personality, therefore they usually fit in very well

with their host family and close friendships can be

formed. You do not need to understand Japanese,

just be open to new experiences and new cultures.

They will arrive in Newcastle on Thursday, 24 July

and leave on Monday, 4 August. Those students

who travelled to Japan with their junior schools

would now be expected to repay the hospitality by

hosting in turn.

Please speak to your parents and consider the many

benefits which could accrue should you decide to

host - it can be a life changing experience for the

whole family. Please see Miss Veltruski, so that I

can inform the Japanese school of the hosting

details and so that you can have some

email/Facebook contact before they arrive.

Dominic Day Celebration

Friday, 9 May marked the annual SFX celebration of one of our four patron

saints, Saint Dominic. The day started off with a liturgy dedicated to

Dominic’s life and teachings. Many members of the Dominic House came

together to create a short video in appreciation for our saint.

The festivities then continued out onto the quadrangle where we had stalls

of fairy floss, Tetris, numerous lolly jars and many more. The school was

full of Where’s Wallys, Thing 1 and 2 from Cat in the Hat and people

coloured head to toe in red. It is a SFX tradition that Dominic is the house

of karaoke and it was a smash! We had an overwhelming amount of people

volunteering to show off their vocal chords. Shout out to Daniel Provost and

Michael Smart for their thrilling duo.

All in all, it was a ripper day, good work Dominic House. Saint Dominic

would be very proud!

And a big thankyou to all students who contributed to this day by

supporting the stalls or volunteering for karaoke. All proceeds will go to the

Brown Sisters, Merewether.

Now it’s up to you Champagnat, you’ve got much to live up to!

Odd Jobs….. Hippotherapist Hippotherapy refers to therapy that uses the natural

movement of a horse as part of a patient's treatment

plan. Because a horse's pelvis has a three-

dimensional movement that mirrors the physiology

of the human walk, horseback riding can be highly

beneficial for patients with both physical and

neurological disabilities.

Hippotherapy may be used in physical,

occupational, psychological, or even speech

therapy, and is becoming a popular option for

children with multiple sclerosis, autism, Downs

syndrome and other conditions.

The Uniform Shop

Dear Uniform Shop Customers,

We understand the financial pressures that many families face and as a result Alinta Apparel are constantly balancing our operating costs to achieve the highest quality of garments in line with the expectations our schools and their families have come to expect.

We are continually looking at ways to operate and manufacture uniforms more efficiently without negatively impacting on the product, rights of our employees and personalised service and expectations of our schools and customers.

Despite this, we are continually experiencing price adjustments from our manufacturers and unfortunately are unable to wear the full impact of this anymore. Please be aware that from 1st August 2014, Uniforms will incur a price adjustment. We will be holding prices until this time so you have the opportunity to make purchases at the current price.

We thank you for understanding and hope you continue to enjoy your experience with Alinta Apparel.

Staff Training Day

On Thursday, 21 and Friday, 22 May 2014, 25 skilled

hockey players travelled to Lithgow to compete in the

NSWCCC Hockey Championships.

Although chilly overnight, we were blessed with sunny

days for the competition. The boys first game was a

torrid affair on turf against Edmund Rice College with

Zac Thurlow scoring in the 1st & 15th minutes. With a

lead of 2-1 at half time, the boys were confident and

competitive throughout the whole game especially when

Taylor Kirkwood levelled the score. Unfortunately they

suffered a 4-3 loss. The next game against McCarthy

College on grass proved difficult on the slippery surface

and control of the ball was a determining factor in this

match and the resulting score was a 0-7 loss. Our 3rd

game on grass was a better performance against Trinity

Catholic College, with Taylor and Zac again proving to

be a dominant force up front, unfortunately some

mistakes in defence allowed the opposition to sneak in

four unanswered goals, score 2- 4 loss. The next game

against the toughest team in the competition resulted in a

loss of 0-5. The next game of the day against O’Connor

Catholic College was a playful game with O’Connor

managing to slip a single goal through our defence,

Score 0-1 loss. The final pool game against La Salle

Academy the following day incorporated some tactful

changes with Austin Davies (Goalkeeper) moving onto

the field and Bryce Kennedy taking the stance at goal.

This proved to be0 a mastermind stroke with Lewis Foot

snatching a goal in the dying seconds of the game to

level the scores. With this draw the boys finished 6th

overall and were in the playoffs for 5th /6th position

against O’Connor, in an enthralling and entertaining

game the skill of our players outclassed O’Connor with

Zac Thurlow, Lewis Foot and Andrew de Souza all

scoring goals. I must mention Morgan Hart’s superb

goal which was denied by the umpire.

Special mention must go to Taylor Kirkwood who

umpired the majority of the following matches as part of

our duty and also to Ryan Johnston and Lewis Foot who

assisted him.

SFX Boys’ Hockey team: Lautaro Brieva, Austin

Davis, Andrew de Souza, Lewis Foot, Morgan

Hart, Cooper Houston, Ryan Johnston, Taylor

Kirkwood, Jesse Swain, Zac Thurlow, Bryce

Kennedy and Joel Oliver.

The first game for the girls was played early in the

morning on frost covered grass against Red Bend

Forbes. Both teams spent a lot of time slipping over and

there were a few cases of bad grass burns. We were

narrowly beaten 4-5. Conditions improved as the day

went on and we won the rest of the games that day and

progressed to the semi-finals on Friday against St

Joseph’s Gosford. This was a hard fought game that we

eventually tied 1-1 but because we had beaten them in

the previous game, we went into the finals against Red

Bend. SFX girls did not give an inch and despite Jacqui

Wrightson being carted off with a suspected broken

wrist after a furious tackle, we hung on to win 1-0. This

was such a moving moment as SFX Girls hadn’t won

since 1995.

Special mention goes to our Captain/Coach, Angelica

Purcell whose mother and sisters came along to Lithgow

to support the team and volunteer some much

appreciated umpiring. Our first time Goalie, Isabel

Powell, was fearless and nothing much got past her

while Lauren Daly played most matches with an ice

pack strapped to her injured hip. All the girls, led by an

exuberant Jessica Grosskreutz, belted out a stirring

rendition of ‘Sub Tuum’ at the beginning of each game

and this helped to spur them on to play the best they

could. Injuries and broken nails aside, this was a very

exciting and rewarding trip and the exemplary behaviour

and good sportsmanship displayed by the team, made the

2014 CCC Hockey Championships a memorable

occasion and an event the College can be proud of.

SFX Girls’ Hockey team: Minerva Bailey, Lauren

Daly, Abbie Dowdell, Sophia De With, Mikala

Fulmer, Eliza Gardiner, Jessica Grosskreutz,

Madeleine Jordan, Madison McLachlan, Isabel

Powell, Angelica Purcell, Jacqueline Wrightson
