Mulberry Park in Shallotte. Something new this year is “A

Walk in the Park”, a one mile walk within the bounds of

Mulberry Park. Plan to join us for a day of fun and

"It is better to depend on God than trust in people." Psalm 118:8

We enter November with thankful hearts for the many blessings God has given us but we continue to keep so many effected by the October hurricanes in our

prayers. It is always better to depend on God! That is our theme this year for children's choir - D.O.G. - Depend On God. Check out the cute dog mascots that grace our piano in the choir room. Our children will sing in worship again on November 4th at the 9:30 & 11:00 services. November 2nd & 3rd will see our Jubilee Handbell group participating in the Capitol Area Handbell Festival in Raleigh hosted by the Raleigh Ringers. We are working on some wonderful music and can't wait to share it with you. Please keep us in your prayers as we travel that weekend. Our Soaring Angels will be singing for the UMM at their November meeting and then at Arbor Landing on November 7th as we celebrate Veterans Day.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Tickets for the December 9th Christmas Cantata, "Christmas Praise" will be available on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH AT 9:00 am. There will be a limit of 6 tickets per person. When the 500 tickets that are printed for each performance are gone we will put your name on a waiting list. DO NOT PANIC! And please be nice to the people dealing with tickets. We will do our best to make sure everyone gets tickets to a performance. Tickets are the only way we can assure that everyone will have a seat and we will be safe during the performance. Seating is limited and we want everyone to enjoy this concert. Please note that if you take tickets for 7:00 but prefer 4:00 we will not trade tickets this year until the very last minute so that everyone has an opportunity to get a ticket. If you MUST have 4:00 tickets after they run out, I would suggest you put your name on the waiting list. Thank you for understanding and making this difficult task easier. We do our cantatas not only for our members but for the whole community and we ask our members to be good examples of generosity to the community. Remember, if you take tickets and then find out that you can NOT use them, PLEASE return them to the receptionist as we always have people waiting for tickets. Thank you!!

Happy Thanksgiving! With a voice of singing , Kathryn Parker

A "shout-out" this month to our wonderful, dedicated volunteers who came to the church on the Tuesday of the storm to make sure anyone who came by during the regular pantry hours received a bag of groceries. Thanks, also to Stefanie and Mary Jane who set up the tables with the groceries, and to all who so willingly came to serve. Speaking of volunteers, would you be interested in serving next year at our pantry? Scheduling for 2019 is underway and we are always looking for new volunteers, especially baggers. Baggers arrive at 9:00 AM on your scheduled Tuesday (usually 3-4 times a year) and “bag” the nonperishable items into grocery bags. Please contact Ann Pike at 910- 575-2566 if interested in becoming a "first time" bagger.

DECEMBER NEWSLETTER ARTICLES ARE

DUE BY NOVEMBER 10th

The United Methodist Men will have their next monthly meeting on Monday, November 5th, at 6:30 pm. Clay Swenson and David Mack will provide the dinner. Kathryn Parker and the Soaring Angels will share special music for our enjoyment. This will be the last meeting of the year as there is no December meeting. At our October meeting, Marvin Ragland and Doug Scherzer were elected to be our 2019 President and Vice President. Congratulations to both of these men for stepping up and accepting these new leadership responsibilities. The first meeting of 2019 will be Monday, January 7th, at 6:30 pm. Come and enjoy a good dinner with great Christian fellowship. These meetings also provide an excellent opportunity to meet and socialize with men from Sunday morning services other than the one you normally attend. All men of the church and surrounding communities are welcome.

Raising Funds for Chrismon Ornaments

How Can I Be Involved In This Project? You have the opportunity, through November 27th, to make a $10 donation toward the purchase of the Chrismon materials need for the 150 new, handcrafted ornaments. Your donation can be made in honor of, or in memory of, loved ones. The donor’s name, along with those being honored/memorialized, will be published in a Sunday bulletin in early December. For your convenience, special Chrismon envelopes will be available in the Fellowship Hall each Sunday and in the church office during the week. You can also help with the construction of the ornaments. Information on upcoming “Chrismon workshops” will be published when available. Please call Carrie Casey at 336-456-7479 with questions.

PLEASE VISIT THE FELLOWSHIP HALL

BETWEEN SERVICES ON SUNDAYS TO SEE THESE BEAUTIFUL ORNAMENTS.

Haitian Metal Artwork Available November 4th The Mountains to Mountains/Sea to Sea Mission team, the Seaside mission team that visited and worked in Haiti in June, will offer authentic Haitian Metal artwork for sale in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, November 4 after each worship service. This metal artwork

would make a lovely addition to any coastal home as many, but not all, pieces have a beach theme. They also make unique birthday or Christmas gifts. The artwork is bought directly from the Village of the Artisans in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti, where metal artwork began. Your donation/purchase of metal and calendars goes directly to provide the daily living expenses of six orphaned sisters. The girls live together in a two room block and cement house in the village of Cazale.

Labyrinth Update The Labyrinth has turned out to be even more beautiful than we could have imagined. In recent weeks, the remaining major work has been completed:

Teak chairs have arrived and are fastened to the concrete

The Labyrinth sign is in place

The sun dial given in honor of Myrt Klein is now in place

Trees damaged in the hurricane have been replanted Thank-you to all the volunteers, the Labyrinth Ministry Team, the Trustees, Carolina Creations and to all of you who have supported it with your financial gifts and prayer. Please stop by to see it and plan to take some quiet time to walk with God. Visiting in the early evening, with the lights on, creates a special reminder that we walk in God’s light every day and when we leave the light of the labyrinth, we go forth to share God’s light with our family, neighbors and community.

Blessings and Peace as you walk in this sacred space.

STRENGTH FOR SERVICE SUNDAY The mission of Strength for Service is to publish and provide spiritual and inspirational literature for members of the armed services, firefighters, etc. and other community servants. Stop by the Strength for Service table in the Fellowship Hall on November 11th to learn more. Strength for Service Devotionals will be available for $5.00. Purchase one for yourself or in support of our armed forces and community servants.

Decorating Seaside for Christmas

Old & New Traditions The Poinsettia Tree in the Sanctuary gathering area has been one of the traditions at Seaside. Assembling the frame and watering

system, watering the flowers, and general maintenance of the tree required many, many hours and volunteers. The decision was made to replace the poinsettia tree with a donated, 12 foot, maintenance free tree in place of the poinsettia tree. The tree will be decorated with the new Chrismon ornaments. Following is all of the information regarding decorating, Chrismons and poinsettias: Hanging of the Greens—9:00 AM Saturday, December 1st. Many hands are needed to decorate and adorn Seaside with holiday decorations. It is a great time for fellowship and service. The coffee will be hot and the goodies ready! Please sign up in the Gallery. Call Patty Brisson at 704-502-4235 for more information. Dedication of Chrismon Tree—The new Chrismon Tree, which will be placed in the Gathering Room of the sanctuary, will be dedicated and decorated during the Hanging of the Greens. All who donated a Chrismon, made a Chrismon or those who are interested, are invited to come and place a Chrismon on the tree during a brief dedication service. Poinsettia plants—the Sanctuary will be decorated with 50 poinsettias. You may purchase one in honor or in memory of a loved one for $15.00. Poinsettia envelopes are located in the Sanctuary pew pockets or in the Gallery. Completed envelopes can be placed in the Sunday offering plate or dropped off in the church office during church office hours. The Honoraria/Memoria will be published, as in past years, in the Christmas Eve bulletin.

Have You Been to the Library Lately? Have you found your way to the Gallery Hall yet? It is the hall with all of the bulletin boards and community notices that cover the Gallery walls, and the doorway to Seaside’s Library. Other than the Sunday when you went to the Library for your directory photo, have you spent any time browsing the shelves in the Library? Seaside’s Librarian, Cheryl Schutt, works diligently to maintain order on the shelves and purchase books that provide new opportunities for reading and spiritual growth. Take some time in November to visit the Library and discover a wealth of knowledge and inspiration in a small space. Thank you Cheryl, for your dedication to the Library!

Gentle Words about our Sacred Spaces The Sanctuary is the center of our worship space, a reverent and holy place, especially during our Sunday morning wor-ship services. The Gathering Room, the entrance area to our sanctuary, is an extension of the Sanctuary. Our Gathering Room is a place of welcome, a buffer space between the Sanctuary and the outside world. It is a place to transition from our everyday world to the celebration of worship. It is a place of gathering, greeting, and preparation for worship. The Gathering Room is also where guests form their first impressions of our church. Therefore, we want it to be inviting and uncluttered. We are blessed with many wonderful ministries at Seaside, and we all want others to be aware of our missional outreach and ministry opportunities. We encourage those involved in these important ministries to use the Gallery, the entrance area of the Fellowship Hall, or the Fellowship Hall for promotions, signups or other activities. Occasionally, when a special effort is deemed necessary, the Gathering Room may be used for limited promotional efforts with prior approval. These would be in keeping with the purpose and tenor of the room. Thank you for your spirit of enthusiasm in serving Christ! Thank you for keeping our sacred spaces reflective of a spirit of reverence. Mary Jane

Faith & Film: Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Join us for our next Faith & Film Event on Tuesday, November 13 at 5:00 p.m. as together we explore the life and legacy of Fred Rogers through the newly-released and highly-acclaimed documentary, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” For over 30 years, Fred Rogers, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer, was beamed daily into homes across America. In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life's weightiest issues, in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn't been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before and there hasn't been since. There is no cost to attend this event and a light supper will be provided (donations to help with the meal are always welcomed.) Please sign up online or in the Gallery so we know how much food to prepare. Bring a comfortable chair, and a friend, as we look at the ways that Fred Rogers shaped our society, and how we can today reclaim those lessons to share love and friendship in our world!

Advent Sermon Series & Congregational Devotional Reading Once again we will join our Morning Worship and Spiritual Formation during the season of Ad-vent using a devotional book called Sent: Delivering the Gift of Hope at Christmas by Jorge Acevedo and other contributing authors. Together we will travel through a 5-week journey to discover how, where and why we are sent based on the coming of Jesus as the Christ-child. The following is an excerpt from a recent edition of “United Methodist Now:” Someone shared a question about a term heard in a communion service, that Christ's body was "broken for you." That is not usually what is said in the United Methodist communion ritual. We do not say, "The body of Christ, BROKEN for you." We say, The body of Christ GIVEN for you." However, there are reasons for both terms. As the Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards of Discipleship Ministries explains, what is given has first been broken. Here's why. First, it is what the gospels report that Jesus said about the bread he broke and gave to his disciples at his last meal with them. "This is my body, broken for you. Do this in remem-brance of me." Thus we remember the action of Jesus breaking the bread in the Great Thanksgiving. Second, and more deeply, perhaps, is the understanding of sacrifice implicit in these actions — both what Jesus was about to do himself, what Jesus was doing at that moment with his disciples, and what we are doing as we offer ourselves to God in the Great Thanksgiving in union with Christ's offering for us. Ritually, this is how sacrifices are celebrated in the Old Testa-ment. The priest TAKES the elements to be offered (whether grain, wine, oil or animal flesh), BLESSES God and seeks God's blessing upon them, and then BREAKS and GIVES them to those who are present for the sacrifice to consume them together. In consuming what has been offered and blessed by God, the whole assembly is nourished by God's presence among them. Thus, when Jesus TOOK bread, BLESSED God, BROKE the bread, and GAVE it to his disciples, ritually, he was enacting a sacrifice of thanksgiving in which it was understood the bread was his body, and the cup was his blood. And when the disciples ate the bread and drank the cup, they were (and we still are!) nourished by the presence of Christ in his body and blood.
