Quilting Celebrity Billie Lauder Visits in March!
Our speaker for March will be another California quilter, Billie Lauder.
As a proud third generation quilt maker, Billy has been teaching quilting since
1976. When asked what quilt making meant to her, she said, ―It is the past, the
present and the future.‖ The past is her learning from her grandmother and
mother. The present is her current teaching of her students. And the future is the
person who will pass on the knowledge of what they have learned from her to
others.
Billie has a knack for making quilt construction easy for all levels of quilters. She loves to develop ―Quick
Trick‖ methods of quilt construction. She likes to see just how far she can ―push‖ a block. Writing and de-
signing books has been a great challenge for Billie. With 24 books published over the last several years, Billie
has a vast library to draw upon for her workshops and lectures. She continues to write, design new patterns
and teach. Billie will be presenting her lecture ―Quilts You Asked for It‖ and teaching us ―More Quick
Tricks.‖
Billie‘s workshop: More Quick Quilt Tricks Billie Lauder enjoys developing and teaching quilt-making techniques that are easy for all levels of quilters.
She will share her ―quick trick‖ methods of quilt construction on two separate days, March 12th and 13th.
The book ―More Quick Tricks‖ is required and will be available for purchase at the guild. (The book may be
shared but not copied).

It was cold, rainy and not very pretty this morning, but perfect weather to sit at my sewing
machine and do my favorite thing…quilt but, as I write this message and look out my win-
dow I am seeing blue sky with gorgeous, white billowy clouds and I am feeling the same
kind of energy that I experienced at our Guild Meeting last week. There, the room was filled
with excitement, such a joy to experience. Members were sharing with one another, experi-
encing what quilters experience, friendship and camaraderie. This was the first meeting that
my husband was able to attend and he felt the same energetic and inviting feeling that we feel
each time we get together. Even though I have told him what a good time we have together,
he had to be there to feel the warmth of it all to know what I really mean. Quilters are the
cup of tea by a nice warm fireplace.
Our guest speaker, Nancy Ota, exuded that same friendly feeling. Her fabulous quilts and
garments all had a wonderfully warm feeling. One could tell that each one holds something
special. She shared an array of many different techniques but there was perfection stitched in
each and everyone. Nancy’s workshop was a much quieter experience than usual. Nancy’s
quiet, calm manner was very relaxing for all who attended. It all fit together, learning that
Sashiko has been actually been used in Japan for hundreds of years to strengthen and repair
precious garments of the people.
It was with great pleasure that my husband was able
to meet all of you and for you to meet him. He
really did volunteer to help me introduce the new
President’s Challenge for 2009. He explained that
there are no chickens, only BRAVES. I am chal-
lenging you to experience something new this year.
Jump out of your box and find a new you. It is so
easy to wear those old comfy slippers or sweatshirt
but maybe you would actually feel better with new
ones. Now is the time to try a new tech-
nique, a new color, a new thread, or a new idea. Put it to the test and see if it
does not feel good. I am tiptoeing out of my box by beginning a collection of or-
ange fabric. I will really take the plunge when I begin stitching with it. I will let
you know if it is a good feeling or not. Go ahead, try it you just might like it.
Keep track and you may be a lucky recipient of your very own “Brave.’
Enjoy your month and do what we do best, “Keep on Quilting” because just like last year, we
are going to keep track.
Lots of hugs for all of you, Joyce

Thanks to all of you for supporting our efforts this
month. Beth Stiel won the St. Patrick‘s Day wallhang-
ing. Additional prizes were won by Vicki Lenberg and
Justine Gentile. Though I fell short of my goal of $100,
a generous anonymous ―angel‖ donor gave the necessary
funds to make it to that amount. Thank you! This Guild
is most generous in their continued support of Susan G.

and thanks to all of you, we took in $190.00 for February.
Our basket winners were: Shirley Ellsworth and Helen Murray
Think green and white for the March baskets in celebration of St. Patrick‘s Day.
Our Motto: A day without quilting is like a day without sunshine. Happy Quilting!

From Philanthropy — Carol Howerton and Carol Munn are Smiling! Ladies you have made Carol & Carol Happy Quilters. We debated about bringing in so many
projects, but we couldn't be happier. We have only 21 quilts that need quilting left out of the 64
we brought in. All 12 quilts that needed binding plus 2 that had came in-- a to-
tal of 14 -- were taken. All 26 pillow cases were taken and 59 top kits were
taken. We still have 49 top kits left. WOW ! WOW ! We had a good day.
We are so proud of OGQG quilters who stepped up and some that stepped
out of their box.
Friendship groups — don't forget you can shop for your auction quilt fabrics
at Carol Howerton‘s house, just give her a call.
There were 18 finished quilts and 8 tops turned in. Thank you!
Kim Green won $10 gift certificate from M & L
Glenna Tuomala and Kathy Muckenthaler won Moore's fat packs.
Stephanie Romesberg won a Singer Sewing Machine service certificate.

will need to order more batting soon.

―BRAVE‖ LADIES SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS
At our February Guild Meeting
we had two very BRAVE ladies
who had stepped out of their
boxes before they even knew
the guidelines of the President‘s
new Challenge. While riding
home from ―Road,‖ Karen
Garrity (at left) shared her
new fabric purchases. She ad-
mitted that ―brights‖ were not
her usual colors. She most of-
ten sewed on pastel colored
fabrics. She surely jumped out-
side her comfort zone. Marie
Blash (right) stated in an email,
―This is my year to finish things
and ‗challenge‘ myself to do
more machine quilting. It‘s now or never.‖ She shared,
after receiving her ―Brave‖,
that she had finished two machine-quilted projects. Way to go ladies.
We had 176 members, 8 guests, 2 new members, plus
5 renewing members at our February meeting. Please
welcome them warmly at our March meeting!
Our renewing members are:
Linda Reese #450, Carolyn Rhodes #980, Barbara
Garza #964, Marilyn Gulickson #1010, and
Nancy Kishishita #999.

Spotlight On New Members
A Warm Welcome to Noted Teacher
and Quilters‘ Friend Marilyn York
A warm welcome to new member Marilyn
York, who many of us know as an excep-
tional teacher, and the ―go-to‖ person with a ques-
tion on nearly any aspect of sewing or embroidery.
She was a teacher in the Adult Division of the ABC
School District for many years, and in that capacity
became an expert on machine embroidery and design
software of all manufacturers, as well as on nearly
every sewing machine under the sun. She was lured
away by All Brands Sewing and Vacuum last year and
is revitalizing their educational offerings. We are
happy to welcome Marilyn to our ranks! (Thanks for
getting her to us Karen Powel!)
Candyce Ping joined after her friend Janice Robb
told her how much fun and what a great guild we are,
and after the last meeting she believes it! She has
been quilting three years, and considers herself ―an intermediate beginner.‖ She and her husband live in
Huntington Beach. Welcome Candyce!

Welcome to Our 2009 Round Robin! The point of this is to challenge yourself to enhance someone else‘s work and have fun. This is
exactly what you do:
1 Give Sally McKibben a 12 ½ x 12 ½ -inch block at the beginning of March meeting. The block can be
any style, any technique, and any fabrics you wish.
2 Please include extra fabric so the borders will have some continuity, and save some for yourself to finish
the edges.
3 At the break, you receive someone else‘s block.
4 You add a border to that block and bring it back to the next meeting. You may match, coordinate with, or
accent the existing colors in the center block, keeping in mind its basic theme.
5 This repeats in April and May.
6 In June you get back your original block transformed into a beautiful wall hanging!
You can then add more borders or bind it. The guidelines are simple and are included
with each bag.
MARCH – SQUARES, APPLIQUÉ, or ANY STYLE Border you wish
APRIL – TRIANGLES, APPLIQUÉ, or ANY STYLE Border you wish
MAY– RECTANGLES or ANY STYLE Border you wish
