A part of being involved in schools is the unpredicta-bility that comes with working with energetic boys. While it is easier to suggest that this unpredictability is usually realised in problems and challenges, I find that this is not always the case. In as many ways as we are disappointed with unpredictable behaviour of a few students we are also uplifted by the surprisingly thoughtful behaviour by many students. The last week has been no different where we have looked at a few instances of disappointing choices by a few students but within these times there have been other times of great hope where the responses by other stu-dents have been thoughtful and inspir-ing.

One of these uplifting times occurred last week for me when a group of year 7 students organised a meeting with me to seek permission to organise an event to support a worthy cause. The students were collectively a part of our ERA for Change social action group and they wanted to raise awareness through the Stella Fella initiative. The Stella Fella initiative seeks to raise awareness that men need to take a lead in standing in opposition to violence against women and human trafficking. As they explained to me they wanted to invite ATC students to be Stella Fellas who stood in solidarity with women to oppose the way that women are treated. This solidarity will be sym-bolised by wearing a bow tie this Friday and declaring that we oppose violence against women and human trafficking. This dedicated group of year 7 students have started their awareness campaign by speaking on the Junior and Middle School Assemblies this week and inviting students to join them on Friday by wearing a bow tie and bringing along a gold coin to

raise funds for this important cause. They will be sell-ing bow ties for $2 on Friday morning before school to support this important initiative.

I was thrilled to see the year 7 students suggest this initiative, in an all-boys school it is important that we can be countercultural to the common society belief that men are measured by their strength and power over others and sadly this misguided belief can lead to abusive and degrading treatment of women. I be-

lieve we need to aim to ensure that our young men, who are our future fathers, brothers and husbands, understand that real strength is realised often in the gen-tleness we can show.

ATC students will join thousands of stu-dents from ERA For Change schools around Australia to take a stand for women and children everywhere, by committing to being "Stella Fellas" and "Stella Bellas". A Stella Fella or Stella Bel-la is a young man or woman who will stand up for women everywhere and

ensure all are treated with dignity and respect. As a sign of this commitment, students will be invited to take a pledge to never "commit, excuse, or remain silent about violence against women". The money raised through a gold coin donation will support or-ganisations such as ACRATH, Project Futures, White Ribbon and the SHE Rescue Home and their work to end violence against women and end human traffick-ing. I would invite all our young men to be “Stella Fel-las” this Friday and wear a bow tie. festival for schools in south east Queensland with nearly 100 schools involved over the four days. For our music community it is the highlight of the year and provides our students with the opportunity to perform in a non-competitive forum. Their perfor-mances are judged against a criteria standard and scored to give the performances feedback against criteria. On their performances our fourteen choirs, ensembles and bands we awarded 7 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze level. While they are not the main focus of the festival these awards are a fitting recognition of the strength of the music program at ATC. Each year our students are a visible presence at the Festival. The sheer large numbers of our students performing, the fact that we are an all-boys school, the presentation of our students in their formal uni-forms and the high standard of musicianship that our students display in their performances make ATC a discernible presence at this festival. Once again this year I was a very proud Principal to receive numerous compliments from staff and parents from other per-forming schools and from QCMF staff and volunteers commenting on our students. The success of music at ATC is directly proportional to the quality of our music staff. We have an incredibly committed, passionate and energetic staff that lead our music program and the success of our program is a testament to the passion for music that they instil into our students. I would like to congratulate both our music staff and our music students on the perfor-mances that I had the pleasure to share. Given the age of our performers, I was once again blown away with their standard of their performances. Well done. Prayers I would ask the community to please keep Gail North-cote (our Junior School Learning Support Coordina-tor) and her family in your thoughts and prayers fol-lowing the passing of her mother earlier this week. Gail's mum, Louisa Christina developed pneumonia at the end of last week and at 88 years of age unfor-

tunately this lead to her quite sudden passing. I would ask you all to please keep Gail and her family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, May perpetual light shine upon her, may she rest in peace. Amen Tuckshop The flu season and the Ekka go hand in hand in Bris-bane and our community has certainly not escaped widespread sickness. This year we have been very fortunate to have a very good response from our par-ent community to the growth at the College and spe-cifically to the increased numbers of volunteers we have needed to assist in the tuckshop. Not only did we increase student numbers that impacted on the tuckshop services but increased the provision of ser-vices to include being open five days a week and opening before school to cater for the breakfast needs of students training before school. This year the expansion of the tuckshop has been a great suc-cess and much of this is due to the work of Danielle Milne’s energy and passion. While the numbers of parent volunteers has been very good the flu season has realised decreased availability from some parents to help out. If there is a chance any parent, mums and dads, has time to assist by volunteering in the tuckshop we would love to hear from you. Please email Danielle or phone her on 0403 507169. Reminder I would extend a gentle reminder to all year 8 parents that the Year 9 Pathways Information Evening is on next Thursday evening August 27 at 7.00pm in the Hall. This is an important evening where pathways and subject offerings will be explained to facilitate the subject choices students will need to make for year 9 in 2016. The Pathway Information Subject Se-lection Booklet is now available for viewing on the Parent Portal under the Documents tab.

With Best wishes

Service is about relationships. It is about meeting and being with a cross section of people who make up our society. It is an invitation to build relationships that even-tually lead to the growth of all involved. Congratulations to our students achieving service hours. Please continue to share your photos and experiences by email [email protected]

Matthew & Will represented ATC at the Rotary Club of Inner Brisbane West to donate $250 raised at a fundrais-er organized by Year 4 Lynch students.

Year 4 student Jackson helped with cleaning stalls of horses used to assist chil-dren with disabilities at Aquus Terra.

Matthew participated in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk with his 2 dogs to raise money for the RSPCA. He also serves at Mass every second week.

It has certainly been a busy term for our staff and students. One of the key challenges as we move forward as a College, is to begin

the process of pathway education. Pathways represent school and post-school options for students. Even though our oldest stu-

dents are only in Year 8, it is important that they begin thinking about their future directions. In 2016 for instance, Year 9s will

begin their final year in the middle school, and will be asked to study four electives (two in Semester One and two in Semester

Two). While students should certainly choose electives on the basis of what they are interested in, it is also important for them to

be mindful about what they might like to study in Year 10, 11 and 12.

To support our Year 8 students with their pathways, the College will host a ‘Year 9 2016 Pathway Information Evening’, on Thurs-

day 27 August from 7.00 pm in the hall. The presentation will run for approximately 1 hour. Parents are encouraged to attend

with their sons, in order that conversations after the event can be more fluid. Key discussion points will include:

1. What are pathways and what pathways are open for your sons, in Senior?

2. What’s new in the world of work and employment?

3. What subjects are on offer at Ambrose Treacy College in Year 9 and beyond?

4. How should I make decisions about subject choices?

Should you be unable to attend the Pathways Information Evening, the College will make available the presentation and subject

selection booklet, on SEQTA. Note that, in order to build the Year 9 timetable, we require subject selection preference forms re-

turned no later than Friday 11 September.

The ‘Let’s Chat’ formation sessions successfully com-menced today with boys in 6 Bodkin and Lynch com-pleting the first session -My Changing Body. A reminder to parents that this is a great opportunity to talk engage with your son about what was discussed in these sessions over the next month. Our Year 5 program has had some date changes and the three sessions will now occur on 3/09, 9/09 and 14/09. A number of great initiatives are taking place in the Junior School at present. Below is a snapshot from each year level.

Year 4 (Mr Cashmere) Over the course of the term, Year 4 have been engaging in a number of Friday activities that they have undertaken with their unbridled energy and enthusiasm. Mr Henschell and his coaches have the boys forming their cricket skills. Mr. Donatini has many differ-ent activities revolving around athletics. Mr Jones has the boys in the pool undertaking different aquatic activities. Mr Cullen has a number of boys working on different games and skills and Mrs Smout has been fostering the creative and technology aspect of the boys’ minds.

The Year 4 boys have engaged in a number of high inter-est activities to facilitate their learning. In Maths they have employed their skills to measure and record long jumps and planning a trip to the Ekka. The boys are now working towards the annual Year 4 Regatta that will occur on the last day of term. All donations of washed milk bottles will be accepted. The boys will also be relying up-on their knowledge of the First Fleet as they strive to cre-ate the most sturdy and reliable boat to complete the gruelling course.

Year 5 (Mr Gordon) Last week, both 5 Lynch and 5 No-lan travelled to St Mark’s Catholic Primary School, Inala for a visit with their year 5 classes. The boys from ATC and students from St Mark’s worked together to com-plete some design and technology tasks and then enjoyed a lunch of spring rolls and a sausage sizzle. It was pleas-ing to see how well the boys worked with boys and girls from St Mark’s. Next term, 5 Bodkin and 5 Nolan will host a return visit from St Mark’s and we look forward to having many positive interactions in the years to come.

A number of boys in year 5 will be taking part in the step-a-thon later this month when they seek to walk as many steps as possible over a week from August 31 to Septem-ber 6. The boys will be raising money for the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. Donations can be made through the website.

Year 6 (Mr Sullivan) Over the last few weeks our Year 6 boys have been learning about the charity, Street Swags. This has meant investigating the good work they do with the homeless around Australia. Street Swags provide basic bed rolls or ‘swags’ for those sleeping rough and give preference to families and those with small children. Each year Street Swags hold an annual fundraiser called Swagtember which they rely heavily on to be able to con-tinue doing their good work.

This will be the third year NJC / ATC has been involved in Swagtember. This is a sleep out at school where the Year 6 students sleep in their eating area for one night and raise money in the lead up to support them ‘roughing it for a night’. As part of this event Shelley Ryan comes out from Street Swags and talks to the boys about the charity and also brings swags for the boys to assemble and roll, ready for shipping. We have set the goal of raising $3500 this year. The boys have made an impressive start and have been busily working on coming up with creative ways to get donations. So far we have managed $996 thanks to the generosity of our wonderful community. If you would like to support us please head to the website to make a donation.

Junior School Science Fair On Friday, September 11, we will be holding the best ever (and first) ATC Junior Science Fair. Boys who wish to present on the day need to form groups up to a maximum of 3 and make a presentation based on the work of a famous scientist. Each group is to make a poster on their Scientist and an experiment or hands-on activity is to accompany their poster. Entries are due by Friday, September 4th and entries are to be e-mailed to Mr Gordon at [email protected]

QCMF (Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival) Congratulations to all students who performed at the QCMF on the weekend, what an exciting opportunity to be part of ATC’s first ever ap-pearance at this wonderful event! There was some outstanding talent on display from music students from all over the country and our students performed to a very high level – they should all be very proud of their achievements! We participated in 14 performances over three days with a total of 228 students involved. Our results were outstanding with 7 Gold, 6 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Weekly Focus – Year 4- This term the Year 4 boys are creating some crazy clay monsters using the pinch pot technique. They are learning how to attach elements of their designs – eyes, ears, spikes, tongues – using the slip and score method, to ensure that each addition is securely attached to avoid breakages during the firing process. There are some weird and wonderful creatures beginning to appear and the boys are really enjoying getting messy with the clay.

Jazz by the River Auctions- On Saturday 17th October we will be holding the inaugural ATC Jazz by the River evening, during which selections of student artwork will be on display. As part of this event, the boys are working on class artworks that will be up for auction on the night. There have been some great ideas thrown around by the classes, so these artworks will be sure to steal your heart!

Photography Competition- Mrs Smout (4L) has kicked off her annual photography competition again this term. The three categories are ‘music’, ‘movement’ and ‘marvellous’. Only ONE photo per category may be entered, with a maximum of THREE photos per student. The photos must be submitted with the student’s name, class and the category they are entering, and handed to Mrs Smout by Friday September 4th (week 8). The photos entered into this competition will be on display amongst the artwork at the Jazz by the River evening.

Donations -As Design Technology focus on using recycled materials for their work, they rely heavily on donations of recycled timber. If you have any timber or wooden pallets that you would like to donate, please get in contact by email with either Cam McConnell or Shantelle Kerwin to arrange collection of any donations. Last Tuesday evening a number of boys and their parents celebrated national Reading Hour in our Mt Si-on iCentre. We welcomed guest author, Christine Bongers, and then spent a pleasant time reading by torchlight in family groups. It was very pleasing to see boys come ‘back to school’ in the evening and to share the joy of books and reading.

We continue our love of books and reading next week when national Childrens’ Book Week is celebrat-ed. We will be hosting a Book Fair from Monday to Wednesday, and all profits from any book sales will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Boys are also asked to donate a gold coin next Friday when they may come to school dressed in something light, bright and shiny to highlight the Book Week theme of

‘Books Light Up Our World.”

Stella Fella is a positive awareness campaign educating boys about making better choices and encouraging and recognising posi-

tive male role models in our community. This Friday 21 August we are encouraging students to wear a bow tie to school and take

a stand against violence towards women. Bow ties will be for sale on the day for $2
