Volume 23, No. 23 14 December 2007

He Lived All Alone, In A One Bedroom House Made Of Plaster And Stone.

I Had Come Down The Chimney With Presents To Give, And To See Just Who In This Home Did Live.

I Looked All About, A Strange Sight I Did See, No Tinsel, No Presents, Not Even A Tree.

No Stocking By Mantle, Just Boots Filled With Sand, On The Wall Hung Pictures Of Far Distant Lands.

With Medals And Badges, Awards Of All Kinds, A Sober Thought Came Through My Mind.

For This House Was Different, It Was Dark And Dreary, I Found The Home Of A Soldier, Once I Could See Clearly.

The Soldier Lay Sleeping, Silent, Alone, Curled Up On The Floor In This One Bedroom Home.

The Face Was So Gentle, The Room In Such Disorder, Not How I Pictured A Soldier.

Was This The Hero Of Whom I’d Just Read? Curled Up On A Poncho, The Floor For A Bed?

I Realized The Families That I Saw This Night, Owed Their Lives To These Soldiers Who Were Willing To Fight.

Soon Round The World, The Children Would Play, And Grownups Would Celebrate A Bright Christmas Day.

They All Enjoyed Freedom Each Month Of The Year, Because Of The Soldiers, Like The One Lying Here.

I Couldn’t Help Wonder How Many Lay Alone, On A Cold Christmas Eve In A Land Far From Home.

The Very Thought Brought A Tear To My Eye, I Dropped To My Knees And Started To Cry.

The Soldier Awakened And I Heard A Rough Voice, “Santa Don’t Cry, This Life Is My Choice;

I Fight For Freedom, I Don’t Ask For More, My Life Is My God, My Country, My Corps.”

The Soldier Rolled Over And Drifted To Sleep, I Couldn’t Control It, I Continued To Weep.

I Kept Watch For Hours, So Silent And Still And We Both Shivered From The Cold Night’s Chill.

I Didn’t Want To Leave On That Cold, Dark, Night, This Guardian Of Honour So Willing To Fight.

Then The Soldier Rolled Over, With A Voice Soft And Pure, Whispered, “Carry On Santa, It’s Christmas Day, All Is Secure.”

One Look At My Watch, And I Knew He Was Right. “Merry Christmas My Friend, And To All A Good Night.”

The holiday season is typically a happy, joyous time of year. However, year after year, the tragedy of home fires impacts many people’s happiness. We would like to offer up some holiday safety and fire prevention tips so your holiday season may be a joyous and safe one. Use caution with holiday decorations and whenever possible, choose those made with flame-resistant, flame-retardant or non-combustible materials.

Holiday decorations and treesPurchase a fresh tree. Needles will

be hard to pull from the branches. Fresh needles don’t break if bounced on the ground, and only a very small number of needles should fall off the tree. To keep your tree fresh, cut off about five centimetres of the trunk to expose fresh wood for better absorption of water. When placing your tree, make sure it is kept away from sources of heat, like fireplaces or radiators. Also, keep it out of areas where people often walk.

Keep candles away from decorations and other combustible materials, and do not use candles to decorate Christmas trees. Purchase only lights and electrical decorations bearing the name of an independent testing lab and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and maintenance.

Check out your lights before placing them on the tree. Look for worn or frayed wires and broken bulbs. Don’t overload extension cables. And for those of you using transformers, make sure they are not

overloaded and have sufficient free space around them. Do not overload extension cables.

Always unplug lights before replacing light bulbs or fuses. Don’t mount lights in any way that could damage the wire insulation of the cable (i.e. use clips, not nails). Keep children and pets away from light strings and electrical decorations. Turn off all light strings and decorations before you leave rooms/work places/offices/home, and before you go to bed.

Take care when using candles. Keep them away from flammable decorations. Place them where they cannot be knocked over or reached by children or animals. Do not leave lit candles in unattended rooms/work places/offices. When buying an artificial tree, look for one rated ‘fire-retardant’.

FireworksFireworks are often used to

celebrate the New Year. A few simple rules will keep your fireworks display safe:• Fireworks and alcohol do not mix.• Keep fireworks at a safe distance

from people.• Abide by the local laws governing

times/restrictions on setting off fireworks.

Driving safety during the holiday period can be challenging. Winter tyres are mandatory in Germany.

We wish all Component personnel a safe and happy holiday season. If you have any fire safety concerns during this holiday period, please contact Mr. Kanters (SWAF) at extension 4769.

Lt. Col. (retired) Michael Dornquast was guest speaker for the first ever Rotodome Roundup officers’ social on 29 Nov. During his presentation, Dornquast spoke about his experiences flying in the German Air Transport Command as well as his prior work here at the Component as an instructor pilot in the 1980’s and as the Deputy Operations Wing Commander in the 1990’s.

Officers at the social event conducted a tricycle race as part of a leadership challenge. The challenge was designed to show the importance of teamwork and communication, as well as to have fun. The officers also played Crud, a unique Canadian game using a billiards table, in order to build camaraderie among the officers working on the base.

From 12 to 16 November, Squadron 3, under the lead of Deployment Commander Lt.Col. Hans Grunwald, flew NMT training missions over the beautiful landscape of Scotland. The squadron was hosted at RAF Leuchars, near the city of Dundee.

With two crews and a total of 64 detachment members, five missions

with an average length of more than seven hours were flown under perfect conditions. RAF Leuchars was chosen to avoid long approach routes, to train the pilots and to relocate as many flight movements as possible to other air bases.

14 December 2007 NATO Skywatch 7

By SMSgt. Johan Hijmenberg

We all have hopes of a white Christmas. This is especially true for the picturesque town of Valkenburg in the south of Limburg, because a white landscape provides even more warmth and friendliness for ‘The Christmas town in the Netherlands’, only 25 kilometres from the E-3A Component.

Entering the town you’ll step into the story of Charles Dickens. Romantically illuminated streets, decorated Christmas trees and beautiful Christmas songs bring the town alive. You’ll enjoy the only Dutch town with real Christmas settings and, of course, the unique Christmas Markets in the Cave. The Christmas spirit is felt everywhere.

Until 22 December the Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave) is the unique setting for a Christmas Market. Organized now for the tenth time, it’s the best-visited indoor Christmas event of the Netherlands. It immerses you in a cosy subterranean ambiance, with many fairytale decorated stands with luxury and Christmas gifts. At the market you’ll find the best ideas for your Christmas decorations and also the possibility to find a stylish Christmas present for your loved ones. An experience for everyone.

Many handmade products, which are often not available from mainstream commercial sources, can be seen and bought. Halfway through the route is a pleasant Winter Wonderland Tavern equipped for the enjoyment of a snack and a (heart-)warming glass of Glühwein. Every weekday between 1300 and 1700 there is live music in the tavern, as well as on Sunday through Thursday

from 1730 to 1930, and Friday and Saturday from 1830 to 2030.

The Fluweelengrot houses numerous mysteries and a treasury of impressive mural carvings, inscriptions, and exceptional sculptures in the soft marlstone walls, as well as a romantic refuge chapel dating back to the period of the French occupation. In World War II, the cave served as a shelter for Jewish people, locals, and Allied troops. All of these events have left their marks in the cave.

Both in summer and in winter, there is a constant temperature of 12 degrees in the Fluweelengrot. Closely connected to the castle of Valkenburg, the cave is a labyrinth of mysterious passages situated under the Castle Ruins. The cave

was created around the year 1050 through excavation of the cave’s marlstone by the people working as ‘blockbreakers’. The blocks of marlstone excavated from the cave in those days were used to construct the castle of Valkenburg as well as other buildings in the area. The result of the excavation of marlstone is an extensive labyrinth of ancient and capricious passages. These secret escape passages, discovered by chance in the year 1937, enabled the knights and their warriors in past times to secretly exit from the castle during warfare and attack the enemy from the rear.

ParadeBecause of the large success of last

year’s Christmas parade, another sparkling Christmas parade this year will follow a route through

the fairytale lighted streets of Valkenburg and will have at least four themes. Each theme will include a float, a group of dancers, and entertainers. The parade, which dances and moves with a piece of music composed specially for the occasion, passes through the town centre for approximately 15 minutes every Wednesday at 1900 and every Saturday at 2000. Both the floats and the costumes, decorated with thousands of lights, will ensure quite a spectacle.

The Christmas Market opens weekdays at 1200, weekends at 1000; it closes Sunday through Thursday at 2000, Friday and Saturday at 2100 (Saturday 22 December at 1800). Entry prices: adults €3.75, children 4-11 years €1.75, children under 3 years old are admitted free.

Imagine. You’re 90 years old and the most decorated officer of the 82nd Airborne Division. A bill has been introduced to consider your actions on 28 January 1944 worthy of a Congressional Medal of Honour. What would you do for the holidays?

Visit the Benelux region of Europe, what else!

Lt. Col. (Ret.) James Megellas, the 82nd Airborne’s most decorated officer and author of the book “All the Way to Berlin”, will be at the Schinnen Bookmark Tuesday, 18 December, from 0900 to noon, where he will give away 40 to 50 of his books and hold a book signing. His visit is part of a tour of locations in the Netherlands and Belgium where

he led soldiers in World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge.

Megellas will attend the “Nuts” Commemoration Ceremony in Bastogne, Belgium, 15 December. The 30th Annual Memorial March commemorating the Battle of the Bulge will also be held in Bastogne the same day.

“Nuts” refers to a moment on 22 December 1944 when General Tony McAuliffe was the acting 101st Airborne Division Commander. McAuliffe, outnumbered and surrounded by enemy forces in Bastogne, was demanded to surrender. McAuliffe replied to this demand with, “Us surrender? Aw, nuts!” Ever since, “Nuts!” has been a one-word description of the World War II paratrooper’s determination to fight and win.

Megellas will also be in Herresbach, Belgium on 16 December as a guest of the local mayor, to watch a commemorative airborne jump.

Lt. Megellas led his platoon in a surprise attack there on 28 January 1945. During this encounter, he courageously and single-handedly stopped an attacking German Mark V tank, preventing many casualties, then led the charge to seize the town of Herresbach. It’s these actions on 28 January 1945 for which he is being considered for the Congressional Medal of Honour.

Megellas earned a number of valour awards, including the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart, and fought in virtually every type of infantry unit action imaginable during World War II, including

amphibious landings in Anzio, parachute assaults in Operation Market Garden, as well as ground combat in Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany.

In “All the Way to Berlin” Megellas accounts the heroics of soldiers and the price that victories demanded. He goes on to share what many of the young paratroopers did after the war.

Megellas has revisited World War II battlegrounds and enjoys visiting today’s soldiers as well as meeting old friends and comrades. He’s remarked that when he sees today’s soldiers he can’t help seeing in them the same young soldiers, like himself, who answered the nation’s call to arms.

Col. James Riley Stone, Canadian Army Provost Marshal (Military Police), founded the Military Police Fund for Blind Children (MPFBC) in 1957 after his daughter Moira was afflicted with cancer of the eye, resulting in sudden blindness & subsequently death. One of the very notable aspects of the Blind Fund is that it is run and managed by Military Police volunteers. It remains unique in Canada as the only ‘Military’ charity in the country. In every MP unit, regardless of its size or geographic location, you will find a representative for the MPFBC.

On 5 December, Mr. Hans-Willi

Dohmen, Supervisor for the E-3A Component Civil Guard, and Mr. Jürgen Pobehaj presented a donation to SSgt. Janice Wylie, MPFBC Blind Fund Representative and Cpl. Matthew Holden, Assistant MPFBC Representative, in the amount of €400. The funds were collected from

the Annual Canine Biathlon, which occurred at the E-3A Component on 2 June. This annual event continually supports the MPFBC with a monetary donation.

There are also several MPFBC donation cans located throughout the Component where individuals can contribute. This year, over €600 were collected for the MPFBC.

At the end of each fiscal year, all funds collected are distributed to charitable organizations throughout Canada that are involved in the education and recreation of blind children and young adults. This could include the purchase of specialized equipment to assist an individual with schoolwork or devices to facilitate reading for those whose sight is not fully hampered.

Civil Guard donates for blind children

On 5 December, MS Janice Wylie and Cpl Matt Holden, representatives of the Geilenkirchen, Germany Military Police Fund for Blind Children, received a donation of €400 from Mr. Hans-Willi Dohmen (shaking hands) and Mr. Jürgen Pobehaj, coordinators of the NATO E-3A Canine Biathlon event.

It’s time to announce the auditions for the upcoming spring production of ‘Absurd Person Singular’, a comedy by Alan Ayckbourn. Auditions will be held at the Alliance Theatre, JFC HQ Brunssum on Sunday, 6 January at 1400. It’s The Alliance Players’ contribution to the Armed Forces

annual amateur theatre competition, also known as the Topper Awards.

Besides being a very funny play, it also has a very small cast, which we felt was necessary in order to avoid scheduling conflicts and missed rehearsal opportunities. The smaller the cast, the easier it is to coordinate a working rehearsal schedule. That is why we are now only looking for three male actors, aged 30 and up. Due to the small number of cast the decision is made to hold only one

audition for this play. If you have a scheduling conflict, please contact [email protected] (mark your emails ‘Auditions’). Script samples and further instructions will be available for pickup at the GK FSC starting 20 December.

Unfortunately that leaves many, many of you very talented people out for this particular play, but keep in mind that there will be many more opportunities to try out for future productions.

The Alliance Players

Welcome to the NATO Scuba Diving Club (NSDC) Brunssum. The Scuba Diving Club has been around at Brunssum for some 30 years to provide a friendly environment for staff from JFC Brunssum and other NATO bases close-by, including NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen and their dependants 14 years and older to enjoy the exciting sport of sub-aqua diving.

We provide training from taking the first steps in diving to the highest levels using the well-established British Sub Aqua Club training program. The initial training conveniently takes place in the JFC Brunssum pool, where we meet every Monday from 1845 onwards. Training is normally given in English, but instructors are as happy as in other languages, Dutch and German, for instance.

It may be an odd time of the year to thank of going into the water, but why spend valuable days of your holidays learning to dive when you can relax in the warm pool during the winter months and then be ready to go diving on your first day in the sun?

This may have whetted your appetite enough to try it out. Next course for novices started early December. Course fee is €175 including club membership, use of equipment and student manuals. Bring your swim kit and we can give you a try dive in the pool. But, a word of warning, once you have tried it, you will be hooked, resistance is futile!

If you are already a diver, from any diving organization, why not call in? Come and dive with us or arrange to continue your training.

If you need more information, come to the pool on Monday, 1845, or contact John Loeffen on JFC Brunssum at +31 45-526-2916.

Scuba Diving - new course in December
