Volume 23 Issue 8 Thursday 23March F ather and Child Activity Evening A wonderful evening was held by all of those who attended the Father/Child night last Thursday. It was fantastic to see many new families at school enjoying the activities available. Both outdoor and indoor activities had been prepared and included cricket, soccer and bowling, and numerous board games such as Connect 4, Twister and UNO. The highlight of the evening would have to be the ‘Egg and Spoon Race’ and the ‘Sack Race’. We thank Andrew from the City of Casey, who primarily aims to increase male role models with children. Also, our appreciation is given to the staff who assisted with the evening especially the ‘chefs’ who cooked well over 140 sausages and veggie burgers. A hugely successful evening and thank you to everyone who attended. We hope that you are able to maintain positive relationships with the school and of course your child. Thank you, again! W orking Bee Thank You Last Sunday morning, we held our first working bee for the year! Although the

weather was a little warm, the participants were collectively enthusiastic and the tasks assigned not too daunting - the spreading of crushed rock around the pathways of our raised gardens in the school vegetable garden and the spreading of the wood chips into the adjacent garden beds. We commenced at 10:00 a.m. and officially concluded at 12:00 midday; just before the heat of the day built up!! A special THANK YOU is extended to Andrew Bless who, with his earth moving equipment, undertook the task of grading the area between our portable classrooms in preparation for mulching! At its conclusion there was immense satisfaction for a job well done! Thank you to all our attendees for the one or two hours you gave to the school. Your contribution to the aesthetics of our school is much appreciated. Our attendees on the morning were: FAMILIES Anderson Bless Cairns Dennis Diamond Fenech Ganta Johns Jolliffe Keller/Reker Lambie Mallikarachchi McClan Norman Penrose Scott Skoropada Smalley Smith STAFF Jim Bell, Jenny Reid, Judy Anderson, Marina Botros, Joi Zappia, Mel Dennis and, Mel McLean and Chanel Gerritsen, casual relief staff members. Apologies if any participants have inadvertently been omitted.

There are generally no more than two working bees held throughout the year and we encourage as many families to attend, even if it’s only for an hour or two! A collage of photographs has captured the occasion. Jim Bell, principal

School Working Bee

At the conclusion of the working bee,

cool drinks and icy poles proved to be a

welcome treat !!

S chool Assembly School assembly is a great opportunity for the whole school to be together and recognise

individual and collective achievement! “Stars of the Week” are announced and certificates presented.

A ssembly is also a great opportunity for grades to showcase what they

have been learning in our Performing Arts program! Last week, and in recognition of Saint Patrick’s Day, Year 4VK provided the musical accompaniment on recorder to the assembled students singing of the folk song, an “Irish Blessing”.

L ibrary Competition The winners of our recent library competition were also announced. Students had to

recommend a book to a friend and give reasons for their choice. The winners for each grade were: Year Prep: Alexander M. for I Like Outer Space … “Because it’s the most awesome book in the world; the planets near Earth are coo!” Year 1: Wendy J. for Pig the Fibber … “It is very funny and pig blames Trevor for everything!” Year 2: Harini T. for The Cat in the Hat … “I love to read Doctor Seuss’s books so others might like them as well. When you start to read Doctor Seuss books, you will start reading even more Doctor Seuss books!” Year 3: Isabell T for A Bad Case of Stripes … “It could teach them to be themselves and not care what other people think of them. It would be very educational for their learning!” Year 4: Pari S. for There’s a Hippo Sitting on my Roof Eating Cake … This book has lots of comedy and comedy is the first step for reading books!” Year 5: Ella W. for A Dog’s Life … It is a very sad story, but also my favourite book. It is very riveting!” Year 6: Mikayla M. for There’s a Hippo Sitting on my Roof Eating Cake … “It’s easy to read and it includes humour. The illustrations are fantastic and interesting. It has a great storyline as well!”

V isual Arts Program There is a saying that goes, “The proof is in the pudding” and when it comes to the visual arts

program, the proof of quality instruction is in the quality of the resultant art work produced! Joi Zappia, visual arts teacher for Years Prep - Year 5, and Trish Shaw, visual arts teacher for Year 6 can be justifiably proud of their respective students efforts. This term, the art focus has been on drawing; investigating line, perspective, shading and composition. If parents have the opportunity to visit the school, please take a moment to view the artwork gracing our corridors! A lot of talent is being recognised and celebrated!

V isual Arts Enrichment Our visual arts enrichment program is now in its third

session and the recently the focus has been on depicting realistic portrayals of still life using soft pastels.

CASEY NETBALL TOURAMENT Yesterday, our netball girls participated in the inaugural Casey Netball Tournament. It was a magnificent day with both of our teams playing well and winning some games. Team A made the semi-finals, but unfortunately lost to Timbarra Primary. Team B narrowly missed out on the finals. There were some eye catching performances by our girls, most notably; Holly, Tarryn, Hannah, Eliza, Jessie, Isabelle, Tianna and Esther. It was great to see many parents supporting the teams. Thank you to Sandra, Belinda, Jenny, Lana and Paula for your support.

Last week, Daniel, Xavier, Jashan and Gabby participated in the district tennis carnival. Our students played some great tennis winning some games and playing really competitively. Xavier won the boys’ section and he is the Edwin Flack District Champion. He is now off to division tennis on Friday. Daniel, Xavier, Jashan and Gabby displayed great sportsmanship and it was pleasing to see all students represent the school with such enthusiasm. Congratulations to all players on a super effort.

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE. Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them

off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are re-quired to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm book-ings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Depart-ment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
