SHAW SCORES A FIRSTWITH STREAKER SINGLEWith the "streaker" fever fast catching on,Mel Shaw has scored a first on the recordfront with the release of a hard rockingstreaker single.

Shaw took a group of trans -planted Jamai-cans into RCA's Toronto Studios themorning of March 10 - Quality's GeorgeStruth heard the rough cut at noon andsigned the group immediately. A newlabel, Orion, was designed that afternoonand a new group, Shine, emerged this weekwith what could be a "streaker" hit.

Entitled, "Streaking Left, Streaking Right",the song was written by group member LloydLovindeer through MJS-BMI. Several"streaker" singles are now being rushreleased in the U.S. including a couple byradio stations but Shaw would appear tobe the first with a Canadian "streaker".

Getting an album or single off the ground inToronto without the support of a major orvery important independent record companyhasn't met with too much success in thepast but Hasek has experienced seve.-alsurprisingly wide-open doors and he isselling product - in Toronto. The album iscompetitive with anything on the marketand if promoted on a national scale couldpave the way for this very talented youngCanadian. Born in England, Hann makes his home inVancouver where he has made a study ofCanadian folklore - one of the reasonsfor his confident approach to recording. Both he and his co -writing partner PeteWhite have an extraordinary feel for the

music they write and Hann's interpretationon six and twelve string acoustic guitars anddobro supplies an air of elegance so neces-sary in catching the ear of first, the program-mer and then the consumer.

Hann is presently touring Western Canada. He has played dates in Nelson, Castlegar,Calgary and Lethbridge. Coming up areMedicine Hat (13), Regina (14-15), Saska-toon (16-19) and Winnipeg (20-23).

Hann's previous touring netted him excel-lent notices. Edmonton Journal criticsfound him "a master of emotions, givingeach song just what it needs to emphasizethe subject, whether it is the predicamentof a trapped coal -miner, a trapped lover, orwhatever." Jeani Read in Vancouver'sProvince referred to Peter White's lyricsas having "a deadly accuracy of statementand a clean, economical expression ofemotion, all beautifully sustained by therough -gentle of Hann's voice". Although the Blue Diamonds are in themain a country group, the type of musicthey are presently playing is up -country andthis along with the fact that they are playing

and singing a good selection of songs thatare currently in the hit parade, along witha few popular oldies, makes for a veryenjoyable evenings entertainment.

The group comprising, Al Hooper on rhy-thm, Doug Watters on lead, Shane Doreybass and Roy Feener on drums impressedme very much, and are very modern in theirapproach. Surely this is what country musicneeds if we are to compete in the worldmarkets. These boys reminded me verymuch, on this particular night's playing, ofa contemporary pop group of a few yearsago, who hailed from England and went bythe name of the Tornadoes who as well asbeing the back-up group of a singer named,

HOUKA OFF WITHTIM WILLIAMSCOUNTRY SINGLEVancouver -based Houka Records havereleased a country single, "Careful MountainPony" by Tim Williams. The plug side waspenned by Marc Strange, well-known Cana-dian television personality, through RossGroup Music-BMI.

The flip, "Leavin' You" is a Williams'original through Ross Group and StudebakerMbsic-BMI and is described as "Tim's ownstatement born of his own long experienceof the country singers' lonely life on theunending road."

Williams is no stranger to the recordingfield. He was a studio sideman for countryproductions in Los Angeles for many yearsand released a solo album on the Epic labelbefore moving to Canada a few years ago.

Houka are now planning a tour of Williamsthrough Western Canada sometime thisspring.

JOHNNY WINTER CONCERTIf Johnny Winter doesn't like Toronto, heshould learn to because they love him. Gutsy, blarey, and hoarse, the lean Winter jogs out- and you feel it, through the floor and inthe air. Winter and his group jolt througha few fast numbers including, from "Saintsand Sinners", "Stone County", "BoneyMaroni", and "Blinded by Love" whichwere hard and driving but showed littlestyle in comparison to the work on thealbum. One of the most appreciated num-bers and one that showed what Winter cando, was a lengthy blues tune. It seemed thatWinters, with his group suffered, but alonehe was radiant. So consequently he soloedonce more on "Silver Train" but then thatsong tended to get repititious. "Jumpin'Jack Flash", the most over -done concertnumber, brought back the life and had tobe the show -stopper. Winter received threeencores - "Johnny Be Good", "Stray CatBlues" - also from "Saints and Sinners",and the third, indescernable amidst the noiseand confusion. I think a positive to theperformance but to the disappointment ofmany, "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" wasnot played.

As for Brownsville Station, they shouldhave stayed in the boys' room, generallyunappreciated for their loudness and com-ments to the audience, although they didfinish well with "Smokin' in the Boy'sRoom". -Paul Thomarat

Since taking on the H.P. and Bell account,Sawchyn has presented Lighthouse at thenew Hamilton Place - a completely "soldout" evening and at the PeterboroughMemorial Centre before the largest rockaudience ever assembled in that city.

INDIANA READY TO DOBATTLE WITH PIRATESThe fight against tape pirates in the U.S.is now showing results on the State Legisla-ture level. Indiana's Governor Otis Bowenhas signed an anti -piracy measure intolaw.

Several factions were involved in bringingattention to the tape problem. These inclu-ded CMA board member Bill Anderson;Henry Brief, Executive Director of RIAA(New York); Kenneth Lemry, ColumbiaRecords (Terre Haute); and Don Nelson, manager of WIRE Radio in Indianapolis. The latter was state chairman of the anti -piracy committee in Indiana for the CountryMusic Association and led the campaign toobtain the law.

The statute against bootleg tapes allows thefirst offence as a misdemeanor (a non -indictable offence in Canada) carries maxi-mum penalties of $2000 and one year inprison for the illegal duplication and distri-bution. The second offence, a felony (anindictable offence in Canada) carries a maxi-mum penalty of ten years and a $5000 fine.

Retailers selling the tapes can be fined amaximum of $5000.

The Canadian Recording Industry Associa-tion (CRIA) has been pressuring govern- __

ments (federally and provincially) to bringabout a tougher law to deal with a problemthat has been sapping a good portion of theprofits for several years and allowing forthe distribution of inferior product.

What price freedom in theLondon, Eng.

The "free" world's press is doing a lot oftut -tut -tutting, as well it might, over theplight of the Soviet writer, AlexanderSolzhenitsyn.

we are? Are we living in glass houses withoutthe right to throw stones? I wonder.

Consider, if you will, the situation of Tim-othy Leary, the American behavioral psy-chologist now serving up to 15 years in aCalifornian prison for posession of a minuteamount of marijuana.

Solzhenitsyn, at this writing, has beensummonsed to report to the state prosecu-tor's office in Moscow, which many obser-vers feel will ultimately lead to the legalsilencing of his anti labor -camp literaryendeavor.

But the fact remains that Solzhenitsyn isstill a free man - Leary is not. It's hard toavoid asking yourself which then is the moredemocratic state?

Now what sort of crap is this he's spouting, some readers may be saying ... after all, everyone knows that Solzhenitsyn is a herowhile Leary is just another of those crack-pot, anarchistic fanatics of the acid era. That's the picture that the "free" worldmedia puts out, anyway. Leary was poison-ing the minds and thoughts of the kids.

We first came into contact with Tim Learyin the Fall of '69 during John and Yoko'sMontreal bed -in for peace, and Leary seemedneither Jekyll nor Hyde. He had an auraabout him of a philosopher, a thinker, a manof gentle disposition and obvious peace -of -mind. It just happened that his thinking didnot coincide with that of the currentAmerican political administration, which- despite its horrendous and criminal acti-vities - remains in power. One would liketo believe that nobody's thinking coincidedwith the corruption within the Nixonadministration.

PALASCHUK PRODUCESLINDA BROWN ALBUMJoe Palaschuk, Palais House producer, hasjust completed an album session for A&Mwith country artist Linda Brown. Thesession was produced at RCA's Torontostudios.

Material on the album will be primarilyCanadian with six of the ten selectionsbeing Brown originals. A single will probablybe taken off the album.

Linda picked up a large following of countryprogrammers with her first single release,"Empty Closets", which had a fair run upthe RPM Country Playlist.

"free" world ?Some of Leary's scientific investigationsinvolved the use of drugs such as marijuanaand LSD, which despite staggering evidenceto the contrary, are still considered danger-ous to the aspirations of the "free" world.

Drugs, Leary said recently, were only aboutone tenth of his work, but the media invari-ably question him about them, as theyasked Einstein about the atomic bomb. Hereadily admits he has always advocated thelegislation of marijuana. Who doesn't? Andhe thinks that LSD - which he describesas one of the most powerful substancesknown to man - should be under publiccontrol like fissionable nuclear material.

He predicts that there will always be heroinaddicts, and he feels that the best way todeal with them is by registering their namesand supplying the poor unfortunates withthe substance on prescription. "If insulinwas illegal," he perceptively notes, "don'tyou think diabetics would be robbing to gettheir fix?" Amen.

judge: "Your ideas are too dangerous".

Eventually charges of drug manufacture andsmuggling were dropped because of lack ofevidence. Earlier charges going back to 1966were also dumped when their originator,G. Gordon Liddy, attained infamy as oneof the Watergate conspirators.

Leary was sentenced to six months to tenyears for possession of one one -hundredthof a gram of marijuana, plus a consecutivesentence of six months to five years forwalking out of an open prison. One hopesthat the injustice of these sentences willhaunt the judge until his dying day. Youmight also compare them with some of theWatergate convictions.

Solzhenitsyn, not to play down his obviousdilemma, has still to be charged for his"crimes".

Leary said not long ago that he regardsdrugs as tools, extensions of man's mind as

Leary claims he "knows more about themachines are of his body. I cannot recalla more realistic description. Leary is no

nervous system than any man alive". He does prisoner of drugs - he is a prisoner of con -not find it strange to be locked up behind science. A conscience that too many of usbars because "most of the great thinkers I have chosen to ignore as we hypocriticallymodel myself on have ended up here." tut -tut about the Commies.Along with his lady, Joanna, Leary was kid-napped in Kabul a year ago by Americannarcotics agents after their passports hadbeen confiscated by the U.S. consulate. After four months of solitary confinement,Leary was charged with a 29 -count indict-ment, and offered bail on the security of aworld -record five million dollars. Said the

Leary's ambition is to change the world -"why settle for anything less?" As we haveall seen in recent times, that change does notcome through exercising your franchise. Yetit of all things is the goal to which we allmust strive - if, dare I say it, we want toremain alive.

NewAlbumsTHE CREAMCHEEZE GOOD-TIME BAND - Home Cookin'-MCA 398-JCreamcheeze is a group you try so hard to like that you justmight overlook some of their faults. What you have here is afolk country variety type of mood music, if there is such acategory. There's a lack of balls, perhaps their choice ofmaterial, or instrumentation - or maybe even mix. Whateverit is, it takes away from a very talented group that's capableof much more. Strongest cut is what we are already familiarwith, "Uncle Jed", a past single release,BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE - Buffy - MCA 405-JBuffy's first for MCA and it's just packed with hard sellsingle material from the opening cut "Can't Believe TheFeeling When You're Gone" through to "That's The Way YouFall In Love". There are "uppers" and "downers" and allmanufactured by Buffy (compositions) with an incredibleproduction assist by Norbert Putnam. Probably one of thestrongest cuts and dynamite single material is "Sweet, FastHooker Blues" which would definitely have to be followed upwith "Hey! Baby Howdja Do Me This Way?". In any event- Buffy is finally front and centre with a new dimension insound.

PAUL HANN -A Fine, White Thread - London NAS 13500-KAn Englishman now making his home in Vancouver, Hann, has been taught the good sounds of Canadian folk by hisco -writing partner, Pete White. But it's Hann's clean andsimple interpretation that brings the album home. There'salso a lush classic yet earthy backing to the session. This issupplied by an excellent array of musicians including RobbieMcDougall, piano and piano arrangements, Graeme Card, mandolin, Humphrey Dumptruck, banjo, Gary Koliger, pedal steel and a rich string section with arrangements byBob Buckley. An outstanding album, and a credit to Edmon-ton's Century II Studios. This is a complete programmingpackage for the pop and country programmer and for thosecontemporary rock programmers looking for a musical in-terruption.CLIMAX BLUES BAND - FM/Live - Sire SAS 2-17411-QThis is blues at its finest and recorded live at the Academy ofMusic and broadcast live on -New York's FM giant WNEW.A bitch of a set showcasing the unmistakeable blues guitar, sax and vocals of Pete Haycock and Colin Cooper. There's alot of blues here and the cuts are lengthy with solo featuresthroughout. Highly recommended for listening is "Going ToNew York" and a frenetic blues version of "Let's WalkTogether".ROY BUCHANAN - That's What I Am Here For -Polydor PD 6020-QEverybody's doing the blues but no one does it quite as wellas Buchanan, particularly his stage offering. This, his thirdalbum, is somewhat disappointing. A -blues master, Buchananjust doesn't come through on this production as well as heshould. Perhaps the choice of material that takes away fromwhat could be dynamite cuts. We like "Hey Joe", "Don'tTurn Away" and the title number but that's not enoughto make for a great album.

VILLE EMARD BLUES BAND - Live in Montreal -Funkebec FK2-700-KA very energetic and entertaining package of talent from a newQuebec group. The session was produced by group memberBill Gagnon (bass player) at Studio Six in Montreal. Musician-ship is excellent and some of the solo vocalists, exceptionaland their choice of material, all original. They say that musichas no language barrier but there is a point of acceptance,

RPM 2313174 - --13

lattvx, locittrk

and what we have here could take away, unfortunately, fromthe talents of this group. Firstly the information on thealbum is in French - the introduction is also in French andone might get the idea that this usage of French is overdoneand could be construed as being flounted at English Canadawhere it is hoped to solicit radio plays and sales. A two -recordset of a very expensive session loses its punch with too muchand perhaps contrived audience reaction. The album with-out these distractions, could stand on its own. Perhaps thistype of "canned" excitement is good for Quebec but couldbe a turn off factor for English Canada. By the way we dolike the album and in particular "Indian Giver God" witha superb vocal and guitar execution by Rawn Bankley.

JOHN MAYALL - The Best Of - Polydor PD 2-3006-QA very special album by Mayall and a host of name musiciansincluding: Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Jon Mark, Mick Fleet-wood etc. etc. The two -record set comes complete with "aphotographic portfolio" of the musicians who contributedtheir talent to this set. There's nothing really new here - aproblem of all "best of" albums, but it is convenient for theMayall fan and could garner more of a following.

RPM WESTJohn watts

A substantial number of westerners will beflooding into Toronto on the March 23-25weekend to attend Communications Eightand the Juno Awards. Although some seeboth these events as primarily conducted byand for middle -Canadians (a new culturalgroup), it cannot be denied that there issubstantial western representation in thelist of nominees for Juno Awards. With alittle luck and good taste, these westernnominees could easily walk away withseveral awards.

As far as Communications Eight goes, thelist of speakers and events shows a definiteeastern bias. We shall overcome. Come C9,which some of us have heard will be heldin Vancouver (I'm always the last to know)there should be available several eminentwesterners capable of discussing mattersrelevant to the industry.

The feeling is in the air that the Communi-cations meetings have come of age. Previousmeets have been oft criticized for theirlack of purpose. It seems that what wehave been seeing is a maturing process. Many of us who criticized in the past, my-self included, are now aware of a newsense of purpose to the meetings whichhopefully will be fully expressed at C8.

Once again, I would ask those in the hinter-lands of western Canada, to get in touchwith RPM West. Due to a wide variety ofcircumstances, I have not been able to getin contact with all of you. If you have newsor opinion of interest to the industry, don'tbe shy. Write, telegram, phone or send itby passenger pigeon. We want to know whatyou're doing.

Entrants in the Halderlich contest: pleasebe advised that some of the documentssubmitted for the contest have been mis-placed. Final judgment will not be handeddown until we get to the bottom of this.

POTTS - SUBJECT OFRECORD & STAGE SHOWJerry Potts, an American Blackfoot Indianof the eighteen hundreds, is the subject ofan album now being touted to the majors inCanada. Entitled "Potts", the fourteen -track set was written and recorded byRichard Harrow, an Alberta native witha long list of television appearances andconcert dates to his credit. Jerry Potts is apart of the legend of the old, and not so old, west. He is famous in the west for his activi-ties as a guide and his association with theNorthwest Mounted Police. Historicalauthenticity of the project was ensured byHugh Dempsey of the Glenbow-AlbertaInstitute, author of the book, "Crowfoot".Plans are now underway to transform"Potts" into a musical for presentation onstages throughout Canada. BOOT'S SCOTT COMPLETESEUROPEAN CONCERT SWING

Boot recording artist Chris Scott has recentlycompleted a concert tour of Europe thattook him through Ireland, France, theNetherlands and Italy. It was in Irelandwhere he met with a great deal of audienceappeal for his twelve string guitar work. Sosuccessful was the tour that the NiagaraFalls native is planning an even larger tourof European cities later this year.

Scott's latest single "Sweet Young Thing"has picked up a fair programmer followingfor the established country artist who hashad previous success with Boot singles, "NowThat I'm Back", "I'd Like To See You"and "What Did I Do To Deserve You". He iscurrently concentrating on Canadian clubappearances as well as adding to his reper-toire of original material.

VERDI La Forza del DestinoMaria Callas; Richard Tucker; Nicola Rossi-LemeniOrchestra do Chorus of Teatro alla Scala, Milan, conducted by Tullio SerafinSERAPHIM IC 6088The sound has come up remarkably well on this Seraphimre -issue of the old Angel Maria Callas version of Verdi's LaForza del Destino. Lexcitement and the superb cast are all in top form. Despitethe budget price, the album contains an attractive brochurecontaining the opera text in Italian and English as well assketches by Nicola Benois for Scala production stage sets ofLa Forza. We understand that this release is to be followedimmediately by a re -issue of the Callas recording of Verdi'sMasked Ball.

STRAVINSKY Le Sacre du PrintempsBernard Haitink conducting the LondonPhilharmonic OrchestraPHILIPS 6500 482Not another Le Sacre du bloody Printemps!! This pre -historichooch dance seems to turn up each month as a new release. I

am sure that by now every conductor in the world has had atleast two or three trys at it. (who says there is a vinylshortage?). The great London Philharmonic Orchestra who bynow could probably play the work beautifully without aconductor, turn in a predicatbly polished performance andPhilips engineers have captured their sound in their predicat-ably polished way, But the A and R man who planned therelease should be sent a copy of Grove's Dictionary of Musicand Musicians so that he might be inspired to record some ofthe thousands of works by thousands of composers who haveyet to appear on any disc. Let's give this old war horse a rest.

ITALIAN OPERATIC ARIASRegine Crespin - sopranoACE OF DIAMONDS SDD 2208Vintage Regine Crespin originating from a 1963 release fromLondon Records and once again available on this company'sAce of Diamonds budget line. The orchestra is the Royal OperaHouse conducted by Edward Downes. Side one is devoted toarias by Verdi and includes "Tacea la notte" from II Trovatore,"Morro" from Un Ballo in Maschera, and the Willow Song andAve Maria from Otello. Side two features a fine "Suicidio"from Ponchielli's La Gioconda, "Voi lo sapete" from Mascagni'sCavalleria Rusticana, "Un bel di" from Puccini's Madama But-terfly, and "L'antra notte in fondo al mare" from Boito'sMefistofele. The jacket contains the text of each aria in Italianand English but does not identify any of the composers of theoperas. No timings are provided, and Regine Crespin's vocalrange is nowhere identified. (she could be a strangley attiredtenor!). Perhaps we expect too much from a budget product, but by now, such information should be standard on all albums.

BRUCKNER Symphony No. 8 in C minorOtto Klemperer conducting the New Philharmonia OrchestraANGEL SB-3799

A beautiful, expansive reading by the late Otto Klempererof Bruckner 's massive Symphony No. 8 in C minor. Each ofthe work's four movements occupies one entire side in thistwo record set. The Leopold Nowak edition was chosen byKlemperer for this recording. An analysis of the work by HansKeller is included as well as an essay Otto Klemperer - a per-sonal remembrance by Peter Andry, General Manager ofE.M.I's international Classical Division. The language of OttoKlemperer's conducting style is the language of Anton Bruck-ner and the Symphony "speaks" through this fine recordingwith profound nobility.

of a massive four movement Concerto by English composerHenry Litolff who was born in London in 1818 and becameknown as the "English Liszt". Pianist Gerald Robbins whowas a major prize winner in the 1969 Van Cliburn Competitionturns in a truly brilliant performance of this taxing work andis well supported by the Monte -Carlo Opera Orchestra conductedby Edouard Van Remoortel. The first movement is a stormyAllegro Con fuoco of considerable musical interest, followedby the brilliant Scherzo, which improves in stature when playedin its proper context after the serious opening movement. Theweak point In the work is the third movement, a brief AdagioReligioso, sentimental in the extreme. The Finale, AllegroImpetuoso returns to the brilliance and bustle of the openingtwo movements and is strongly reminiscent of Mendelssohnand Saint-Saens. Available through Almada Corporation andstrongly recommended to 19th century buffs.

MUSIC IN SALISBURY CATHEDRALSalisbury Cathedral ChoirMichael Deason Barrow- Treble SoloistORYX 1806An interesting and varied programme of church music bythe choir of Salisbury Cathedral in England. Boy sopranoMichael Deason Barrow turns in a charming performance of PieJesu from the Faure Requiem. Charles Stanford is representedby his Evening Service in G and the Nunc Dimittis in G.Other anthems include the Laudate Dominum by Mozart, Yenow are sorrowful by Brahms, 0 give thanks by Wesley andWilliam Byrd's 0 Lord rebuke me not. Better red than deadLet us return to yester-year - to 1965 andmy formative radio days. Whilst going outof my mind doing math homework, theflutter of my favourite radio station fadesin once more. Oh praise the benevolentionosphere for bringing WCFL and RonBritton back for another fifteen, minuteskip spectacular! Ron's really happeningtonight. He faded out last time just whenthe 10,000 screaming elephants jammedinto the elevator to come up to the studio.I must have missed the elevator ride 'causenow they're all screaming in the middle ofa pimple commercial he's doing ...

There I was, listening to personality radioat its personality-est. And what amazes menow in retrospect, was the great pains Itook in trying to listen to that station. I'd

have the dial poised at 1000 waiting forpattern change and WCFL to come driftingthrough. And then I'd sit through incredibledegrees and durations of interference wait-ing for the station to fade back again. Totop it all, I had forty local stations, allclear as a bell, to tune to if I wanted, Butnone entertained, communicated, reachedout to me as WCFL did at the time. ThenDrake came along and regrettably I dialedback home for the clearer version of thesame thing - the local time -temp rocker.

I really did like that type of radio, then. And so did many others, although obviouslynot enough. Drake and friends cleaned thewhole thing up and gave contemporaryradio a smooth, consistent, broad -basedpresentation. It worked. The numbers

CONTACTS AND COMMENTS -Contacts and Comments. This is the newtitle for a new section in the Programmerswhich hopefully will appear every week, provided there are enough contacts andsubsequently comments floating around forthe week. The title suggests the content: key

(and also not -so -key people) in theradio, music and related industries will beapproached with stimulating and, yes, sometimes even boring subjects for theircomments. The section is not meant to bea podium for the Word from the Heavies,

Dave Tollingtonnor is it meant to be a heavy editorialpodium for the Programmers. It is meantto be a stimulus and source of ideas -whether you agree or disagree. Pleaseaccept it as it is given. But if you do disagree, let us know why and your views will bepresented for the same purpose. proved it and those still hanging on to theirnow out -dated "personalities" were gettingbeaten badly by the clean machine.

That's all history. What is happening nowis that a number of us have realized thatthose clean machines are, in fact, machinesand more personalized presentations aregaining a lot of appeal these days. But isthis new appeal, once more, enough?Progressive low -key -delivery rock on FMhas made its mark but is certainly nottaking over as the new mass appeal radio.Wolfman Jack, Don Imus and the like havecertainly had much publicity but that is all.Imus' numbers in New York are far fromthe best. Personality radio is interesting toread about and talk about, but how aboutlistening to it on a mass -scale?

Regardless, in case you haven't heard, personality radio is rumoured to be comingback. Really, in one form, it never left. Astation like CFRB can hardly be accused ofnot having personalities in the traditionalsense. John Spragge, PD at CFRB, is veryconscious of the role of personality at hisstation, ranking it first in importance fol-lowed by news and thirdly music as anentertainment bridge. Spragge does recog-nize the danger of having personalitiesbigger than the station though, and strivesfor a good balance of the station's strongover-all personality enhancing the strongpersonalites of the on -air staff and vice -

The National Lampoon Comedy hour hasbeen shortened to the National LampoonComedy Hour. Same name but now onlyhalf an hour in length. The reason for the cut-back was the incredible work load on theLampoon staff to produce the weekly hourshow. Apparently, a typical sign -off for theshortened show runs along the lines of "We'llbe back for the second half-hour of the showafter this message, if this fascist radio stationdoesn't cut us off beforehand."

SIX TV COMMERCIALSREJECTED BY CAABThe Canadian Advertising Advisory Board,a self -regulatory body for the advertisingindustry, judged six television commercialsin violation of the children's advertisingcode. The code, adopted in 1971, prohibitsexaggeration of children's products, messagesasking children to urge their parents to buya product, under -playing of cost of child-ren's products with words like "just" and"only", and endorsement of products bypersonalities.

One commercial, for the McDonald Doll, used the phrase "only $1.25". Another,"Super Slides", violated the code by break-ing frequency scheduling rules and twoothers were run in error by some stations.Irwin's "Kerplunk" and "Don't Break theIce" commercials had been approved ayear earlier, but the interpretation of codewording had changed since, rejecting theuse of the word "get" in reference to urgingparents to buy the toys.

EXIT THE GENTLEMANSTAGE RIGHT

On February 28, 1974, Winnipeg's "Doc"Steen took down the music director's shinglewhich he hung on the CKRC library door13 years ago, when that station acquired itsrock license.

Steen's exit from CKRC - and probablyradio itself - has called the curtain down onan era. It was his creative, maverick, almostprophetic ear which had called the musicalshots in Winnipeg for more than a decade, and now one of the Canadian Music Indus-try's rarest gentlemen has willingly abdicated.

Steen, who acquired the nickname "Doc"because he was a pharmacy student whodrifted into radio via CBC drama, has workedCJOB, CKEY, CKGM, CKY and CKRC.

As the music director of CKRC, Steenbecame known for airing records on hisown judgment, rather than placing a lop-sided emphasis on the "numbers game".Among others, Doc started the ball rolling

for hits such as "Love Is Blue" (Paul Maur-iat), "Unicorn" (Irish Rovers), "The Good,Bad & Ugly" (Hugo Montenegro), "LeanOn Me" (Bill Withers), "Farmer's Song"(Murray McLauchlan), "Happiest Girl InThe Whole U.S.A." (Donna Fargo), "NeverBeen This Far Before" (Conway Twiny) andAlan Sehick's "Lucy, Lucy, Lucy".

In many cases, Steen had been playing thetunes as album cuts for many weeks whenthe record company decided to release thesongs as singles. A recent example is RingoStarr's "You're Sixteen".

This was indeed a maverick music director:a man who refused to let the Bill Drakesof the world do his thinking; one who couldnot be bought and who would not ripanybody off, who asked for so little thateveryone who called on his station wantedto give more. In short, a man who walkedtall because he walked softly.

The question remains, why did Steen - averitable institution in his market - laydown the earphones so willingly?

RON WADDELLMOVES TO TVAfter four and a half years at CKDM,Dauphin, Manitoba, doing a rock show as"The Ugly One", Ron Waddell moved in1970, to radio station CJGX, Yorkton,Saskatchewan, as promotion managerand country disc jockey. Besides many suc-cessful promotional efforts at GX Radio;such as "Canada's Biggest Country Music

Month" promotion every October, he wasable to build an exceptional communicationwith country music people throughoutCanada and the U.S. The height of 1973activities for Waddell was to get the appro-val from the Prime Minister's office todeclare, on behalf of the Canadian countrymusic people, October as "National CountryMusic Month" in Canada. This year hiscountry music month promotion will havethe added advantage of full television visualeffects.

March 1, 1974, would have marked fouryears at GX Radio for Waddell, but onFebruary 1st, he accepted an offer fromthe Shamrock Television stations of York -ton, to become their morning man and hostthe "Top of the Morning" show. ShamrockTelevision consists of four channels: CKOS

Yorkton, CHSS Wynyard and CFSS Estevan, all in Saskatchewan, and CKSS Dauphin,Manitoba; with the "Top of the Morning"show telecast on all four channels eachmorning Monday to Friday. The show issimilar to a radio morning show, featuringnews, weather, sports, and information, alongwith the playing of records. Everything, including the dee jay chatter has the addedadvantage of colour cameras telecasting theentire show.

With the vast areas of both Saskatchewanand Manitoba that are covered, this providesa wide and unique exposure for new releasesalong with the visual aid for promotionalmaterials. The type of music played is acombination of the best contemporary,"pop" and country material available andWaddell has experience in all three fields, having also been music director at GX radio.Album cuts and old gold are mixed in forbalance. Waddell would like to point outthat the size of the record library at themoment is not that large, and would liketo rectify this by having all record compan-ies take note of his new address: ShamrockTelevision, 95 East Broadway, Yorkton,Saskatchewan, and be added to all mailinglists for new releases and promotion mater-ials; with a special request for record com-pany promotional people to be on thelookout for video tapes of your artiststhat he can use to help you with your pro-motion activities and new releases.

Waddell would like to invite any performersin the area to stop in for an interview, andif you would like, performances of yourlatest releases can be video taped for show-ing on the "Top of the Morning" show andon their Friday night live talent show,"Profile", hosted by Roger McLauchlin. Many performers have already appeared inthis manner, including Bobby Curtola, and RCA's Lady and the Gentlemen.

As Waddell gets settled in his new job, andas music director for the Shamrock stations,he hopes to very soon start releasing play -lists to the industry. These playlists will beavailable upon request.

Steen reported that he has become "increasingly frustrated with the lack ofcreativity allowed in today's radio. Whathave we been doing during the past 10years - and what are we doing now - forthe forgotten people, the listeners?

"Given today's radio philosophy, or lack ofit, we now have a flood of stations that, basically, are doing the same things andreally sound pretty much the same.

"The real listener - not the statistic in therating books - has a choice in most casesbetween Tweedeldee and Tweedeldum.Radio as a whole, including so-called 'pro-gressive FM', is a money machine whichhas in a very real sense forgotten where themoney ultimately comes from ... so itchurns out mechanical and largely irrelevantthings aimed at a fictional listener.

"The system has become so inbred thatthere's little chance of any real feedbackfiltering through from the street to manage-ment, and thus as long as the ratings gamesare well -played there's little hope of chang-ing it.

"I came to see that what it all really meantwas that I'd have to change to fit the system, and I guess I just got tired of selling mysoul. Where's the creativity in cranking out30 songs, give or take a few, lifted fromGavin and company, sandwiched betweentime, temp, weather, commercials and, inthe best of cases, the jock is not reallyallowed to develop his own personality onair."

And thus, exit the gentleman, stage right.

Right on, Doc. - Glen Gore -Smith

SOFT ROCK FM FORMONTREAL MARKETProgressive FM? ... contemporary rock?

... soft rock? ... getting warmer. Butorganized progressive is what program direc-

tor Frank Van de Ven (previously MD atCFQR-FM Montreal) likes to call the newformat at CJ FM in Montreal. The formatisn't really that new - it's been going forabout eight months, but, according to Vande Ven, the Book has finally started to showthe basic audience profile and what he hopesto be a bright trend. The cumes are downbut the quarters and total and average hourstuned are up, showing a developing loyalfollowing.Getting back to the term "organized pro-gressive", Van de Ven believes traditionalprogressive rock radio (now there's a newphrase) lacked the organization and discip-line to attract a wider audience base. With alow key delivery, minimal talk and stayingaway from the real progressive "fringe" typeof music, CJ FM hopes to fill the gap forthose who feel "they are being ripped -offby the AM contemporaries and find CHOM-FM too heavy". In this way they hope toconvert a whole new audience that neverreally listened to radio before.

Station manager Paul Fockler (previously

with CJIC Sault Ste. Marie for fifteenyears) describes the station as being threeon a scale from one to ten for heavinessof music and CHOM and CHUM -FMseven and five respectively. The music ispicked for its compatability to the stationwith very little attention paid to the charts.

As an example of the music, the new ToddRundgren, Clifford Ward, Joni Mitchell,Grateful Dead, Strawbs, Tom Scott, JohnMayall, David Essex and Anne Murrayalbums, to name a few, were added to theplaylist last week. The delivery is typicallyFM - low key with no jingles, no musicpad talk-overs, and up to four songs playedin a row. Commercials are produced so as tominimize tune -out, with as much localproduction as possible - a delicate pointwith national accounts. Interviews (MoodyBlues, Bruce Cockburn amongst others) areintegrated in the programming as well aslive performances by local artists. Specialshighlighting the music of particular artistsand the National Lampoon Comedy Hourare also featured.

As far as the bilingual situation is concerned,Fockler sees no problem. Even though theannouncing is totally English, a large portionof French music is played, with a greatresponse reported towards local Quebecrecordings.

With the continuing success of the softenedFM progressives and the FM out-and-outrockers south of the border, the develop-ment of CJ FM will be looked upon withgreat interest.

RADIO continued from page 21

versa. And it's certainly been successful overthe years although the clean machines arestill chipping away.

Another, newer form of personality radio isthe progressive FM. Bob Laine of CHUM -FM sees personality as the station's reasonfor being. Each man is his own programdirector within ideal and flow guide -lines.Although strong personalities like DavidMarsden have developed rather a love -haterelationship with his listeners -non listeners,Laine maintains that good ratings havesubstantiated the hate end of the relation-ship. As far as applying his type of radio toAM, Laine admits stereo has much to dowith the success of progressive FM andbesides, previous attempts on AM have notbeen very successful. It really isn't driveradio - a major consideration on AM radio.

And now to the clean machines. No programdirector would ever refer to his station insuch terms these days - maybe it's becausethey were the type who liked a Ron Brittonyears ago or maybe it's just not cool thesedays to admit that individual personaliteshave no place at their station. But some ofthem do sound like clean machines to a lotof people and often they accuse each otheras being such. Maybe they do believe inpersonality to some extent but just don'tknow how to pull it off.

Most top forty stations think of personalityradio in terms of the station having a strongpersonality as a whole as opposed to theindividual personalities on the station. Mar-tin Kamerman, GM at CHAM Hamiltonsees his station as having to distinguish itselffrom the other contemporaries in the marketdue to the 85-100% music crossover. Hedescribes his station as busy, active; and allthe psa's, news, music, pacing, signal engin-eering and jocks must jive together to givethe station a consistent and distinct person-ality. As far as on -air personalities are con-cerned, the jocks should be able to be tunedout if music is what you're after or, at thesame time, tuned in if you're after interest-ing entertainment. And as far as a Don Imusis concerned, if you can pull it off, do it.If not, don't try. They are a very rare breed.

Across the street to CKOC and Nevin Grant.Like Martin, Nevin tries to give his station astrong personality, as a whole. His way is toget involved in the community - have thejocks, news and promotions relate and getinto the community. As far as individualpersonalities are concerned, Nevin feelspeople want to be entertained more thesedays and are looking for more meaningful

content. He encourages his people alongthose lines. The rumoured shift to strongpersonality radio is a shallow trend, in hismind, and would be a mistake to jump intoat this time. Personality, on a moderatelevel is, and always has been, an importantingredient at CKOC, according to Nevin.

And then there's CFTR's Mike Marshall. He describes the role of the PD as supply-ing the machine and the jocks supplyingthe grease. Marshall, a staunch Draker, believes more music, consistency, andgood, clean radio will beat personality everytime. A member of an old school or a wise, scientific programmer - time will tell.

A question I asked the programmers thatreaped some interesting answers was "Whatcolour would you describe your station asbeing." Red seemed to be predominant.

Amongst others: Nevin described his stationas red - connotating warmth. Anotherdescribed it as blue - cool. Kamermandescribed his as yellow - full of sunshineand cheer. Another described it as grey -no image. Mike Marshall thought of hisstation as red also -- exciting and flashy. And John Spragge described CFRB asgreen - but he is self -admittedly colourblind.

Despite accusing each other of the oppositein most cases, all felt their radio station hada strong personality. Personality radio asa coming trend? Only very moderately so.They unanimously agreed that the days ofRon Britton are not coming back, butpersonality on an individual basis is impor-tant in the perspective of the particularstation. To quote Nevin Grant, better redthan dead.
