Love should be the defining factor of who we are as children of God (1 John 3:10). According to John 15:8, God wants His children to bear fruit. God wants us to bring forth the product of right living. This comes through cultivating the fruit of the Spirit in our lives (Gal. 5:22-23). It is no accident that when Paul revealed the fruit of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit began with the word “love.” Some have described this word as “characteristic word of Christianity”. The predominate Greek word translated “love” in the New Testament is “agape.” In speaking of “agape,” Vines Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words notes, “Christian Love, whether exercised toward the brethren or toward men generally, is not an impulse from the feelings, it does not always run with the natural inclinations, nor does it spend itself only upon those for whom some affinity is discovered.” The bottom line is that love seeks the welfare of all men. Jesus was asked by a certain lawyer who was trying to tempt Him, “Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” (Matt. 12:36). Jesus answered that the first and greatest commandment is to love God with all of our being and that the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matt. 22:37-39). In answering this lawyer’s question, Jesus concisely summed up the entire Old Testament, providing us with a summary of our duty to God and our duty to our fellow man. It is evident from Jesus’ comments that love is not something that is simply felt. The love He commands is not purely emotional. True Christian love expresses itself in three areas. First of all, Christian love expresses itself in complete obedience to God. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15; also see John 14:21, 23-24). There are a lot of people who say they love and the Lord and who feel a great deal of emotion when thinking of Him, but they will not obey His Word. We cannot have a relationship with God if we are not willing to humble submit ourselves to His will (Heb. 5:9; 1 John 2:3-5). If we are the children of God, our practice of righteousness should be evident to all (I John 3:10). If we are bearing the fruit of the Spirit, our lives will be characterized by a love that expresses itself in obedience to God. If our lives are going to be characterized by love, we must be God’s obedient children (I Peter. 1:14). Agape – Love

One virtue that should describe every Christian’s life through and through is love. Love

should be the defining factor of who we are as children of God (1 John 3:10). According

to John 15:8, God wants His children to bear fruit. God wants us to bring forth the

product of right living. This comes through cultivating the fruit of the Spirit in our lives

(Gal. 5:22-23). It is no accident that when Paul revealed the fruit of the Spirit, the Holy

Spirit began with the word “love.” Some have described this word as “characteristic word

of Christianity”.

The predominate Greek word translated “love” in the New Testament is “agape.” In

speaking of “agape,” Vines Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words

notes, “Christian Love, whether exercised toward the brethren or toward men generally, is

not an impulse from the feelings, it does not always run with the natural inclinations, nor

does it spend itself only upon those for whom some affinity is discovered.” The bottom

line is that love seeks the welfare of all men.

Jesus was asked by a certain lawyer who was trying to tempt Him, “Master, which is the

greatest commandment in the law?” (Matt. 12:36). Jesus answered that the first and

greatest commandment is to love God with all of our being and that the second is to love

our neighbor as ourselves (Matt. 22:37-39). In answering this lawyer’s question, Jesus

concisely summed up the entire Old Testament, providing us with a summary of our duty

to God and our duty to our fellow man. It is evident from Jesus’ comments that love is

not something that is simply felt. The love He commands is not purely emotional. True

Christian love expresses itself in three areas.

First of all, Christian love expresses itself in complete obedience to God. Jesus said, “If

you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15; also see John 14:21, 23-24). There

are a lot of people who say they love and the Lord and who feel a great deal of emotion

when thinking of Him, but they will not obey His Word. We cannot have a relationship

with God if we are not willing to humble submit ourselves to His will (Heb. 5:9; 1 John

2:3-5). If we are the children of God, our practice of righteousness should be evident to

all (I John 3:10). If we are bearing the fruit of the Spirit, our lives will be characterized by

a love that expresses itself in obedience to God. If our lives are going to be characterized

by love, we must be God’s obedient children (I Peter. 1:14).
