elected cospokespersons for their respectiveexperiments, CDF took one approach, DZeroanother.

At CDF, Al Goshaw, a lean, soft-spokenman, came to the post by way of a laboredroute: nomination, followed by questions posedby the Election Committee, written responsesposted on the Web and a live question-and-answer session.

At DZero, there was no campaign, but,instead, a series of steps in a very regulatedelection procedure. And Harry Weerts, aneasygoing Dutchman—the Man van Staal, orMan of Steel, as he signs his e-mail messages—was elected.

Differences aside, both men now findthemselves absorbed in the same weightyresponsibilities: providing scientific leadershipfor their colleagues, representing theirexperiments to the outside world. Their jobscan’t be easy. They each represent aninternational collaboration of about 430scientists from over 40 institutions in severalcountries. Goshaw says his job is to “worry”—about organizational meetings, the status ofupgrades, the readiness of data for publication,the disputes and resolutions. The sacrifices are plenty.

Weerts no longer has time for ogling Sears’ carpentry tools and tacklingwoodworking projects. A professor of physics at Michigan State University, Weerts generallyteaches Monday and Tuesday, and arrives atFermilab Wednesday morning, demands on histime already piled high. What are the bestmoments on the job? He can’t think of any. Or, come to think of it, they’re when he hopsinto his car (DZero license plates) and headsback to Michigan.

Goshaw has arranged a leave of absencefrom Duke University in North Carolina,where he is professor of physics, but hisschedule is no less grueling. The Chef Boyardeecans of tortellini that line his bookshelves attestto 13-hour days that begin at 7 a.m., when theCDF office trailers are still dark—and to theabsence of family life. Weekends are reservedfor quality time with his wife back in Raleigh-Durham.

Still, these are heady times for the two newcospokespersons.

In fact, a year before he was elected CDFcospokesperson, Goshaw had already declinedmajor administrative responsibilities andcommitments to other research projects atDuke. Convinced that “tremendously exciting research” was in store at CDF as thecollaboration prepared for Run II, he wantedto be part of the adventure.

solidify their alliance. One threat to them both isthat “awkward” year in 1999: The Main Injectorwill be running then and potentially siphoning off resources to other experiments while thedetectors are still struggling toward completion.

Yet in data analysis, Goshaw acknowledges,CDF and DZero are certainly competitors.“Although CDF will still be a better detectorthan DZero in Run II,” he wrote in his statementof candidacy for the position of cospokesperson,“the technical playing field will be more level, andthe group that wins will be the one mostefficiently analyzing the data and getting theresults in print. Being first does matter....”

Weerts, also, downplays the experiments’rivalry—and readily acknowledges that DZero“may be the less photogenic detector.” But hestill insists that DZero is the “better detector”and is not beyond poking fun at CDF. Pinned tohis wall (“because no one can read it”) is a copyof an article from a Dutch newspaper, the title“Quark blijft ondeelbaar” in bold letters. CDFhad published a paper citing a substructure inquarks as one possible explanation for data thatdeviated from the expected. The newspaperinterviewed several theoretical physicists in The Netherlands, who all said what the title says:No way.

Allies, maybe, sometimes, but in theirscientific work, CDF and DZero are rivals as ever. ■

This is physics of potentially “moreimportance than the top quark,” says Goshaw,because it will venture past the Standard Modelto probe “qualitatively new mysteries ofnature.”

Weerts agrees. “We’re desperately trying tofind something that explains the StandardModel and gives us some new physics.”

“That would make it easier for us toretire,” he adds, joking.

Role of cospokespersonOf course, in the role of cospokesperson,

managerial and administrative tasks dailyoverwhelm.

“We all came into physics because wewanted to do research,” says Weerts, but hisduties now interfere.

Eleven months into his job ascospokesperson, Weerts still hasn’t quitereconciled himself to his new and consumingmanagerial role. He misses being able to tanglewith a difficult physics problem. The son of acoal miner, Weerts was drawn to the field backin high school. His physics textbook endedwith evocative etchings from a bubble chamberat CERN, and he knew there was somethingwonderfully more.

The reluctant spokesman rationalizes:someone has got to do the planning. “I’d liketo see this collaboration blossom even more,”Weerts says of DZero. And he is certain he can“make that happen.”

“We could be happily analyzing data fromRun I” for the next five years, he says, but he’sputting his energy into “getting this detectoroperating,” refurbishing a dauntingly complexdetector for the next wave of particle physics.

As with Weerts, physics remains Goshaw’sfirst love. His best days, he says, are when hiscolleagues share their excitement over newexperimental results.

The most trying are the days spentresolving disputes among collaborators, who,he insists, are all hard-working and earnestindividuals. While resolutions are difficult, by all accounts Goshaw excels at the one-on-onediscussions, the carefully chosen words, to winconsensus among even the most hardheaded.

“The role of the cospokesperson [in resolving questions of scientific judgment] is to step in and damp down any volatileinteractions, getting the discussion movingforward on the high ground,” says Goshaw.

Allies and rivalsGoshaw and Weerts are themselves heading

for the high ground. Goshaw, the consummatediplomat, says he “feels strongly” that DZero ismore CDF’s ally than rival and has proposed tothe DZero cospokespersons regular meetings to

intermittent rain showers throughout the day,scores of volunteers spent a warm October dayin Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory’stallgrass prairie, picking flower heads andlearning about the complex ecosystem.

The public event has grown steadily inpopularity over the years, with nearly 250volunteers coming out on October 4. Armedwith gardening gloves and many styles ofclipping sheers, the volunteers charged into thesoggy prairie, looking for specific species offlowering plants. The harvest, while fun, alsoserves an important ecological function, said Mike Becker, one of Fermilab’s prairie experts. He said large combines are effective for harvesting the

Becker said people often forget that much ofnorthern Illinois was once blanketed by thevery species in Fermilab’s prairie. The arrival ofthe plow and the clearing of the land foragriculture almost eliminated the native flora.However, Fermilab’s commitment to its prairiefor more than 20 years has resulted in anecosystem similar to the area’s originallandscape.

neighbors from all across the Fox Valley andbeyond. Some come to relax, others for extracredit in school, and still others to learn aboutthe grasses.

“We have ages from Brownies tograndmas,” said Becker, “and everyone inbetween.”

One of those in between was Kurt Biery.The CDF collaborator brought along somekids from Lombard and Villa Park involvedwith the Campfire Boys and Girls clubs. Theyoungsters were munching on hotdogs aftertheir harvest time, as Biery mentioned twomain reasons that he brought the group toFermilab.

“It’s a service and something fun,” saidBiery, expressing a sentiment echoed by manyothers at the harvest.

Members of the Batavia High SchoolTREE (Teens Respecting Earth’s Environment)club also joined in the festivities. In fact, BobLootens, another of Fermilab’s prairie experts,pulled the group for special duty. The club rodea bus to the south ring to locate and harvestthe species known as Foxglove Beard Tongue, a flowering plant needed in other parts ofFermilab’s prairie. The group was up to the task, indeed.

“We like to come here each year and getout in the middle of nature,” said one memberof the club.

Other groups and families also were spreadamong the grasses. To the south were kidsfrom West Chicago Middle School gettingsome extra credit. To the west was the Raefamily from Batavia, including Peter, 11; Adam,7; and mom, Marge, who politely declined togive her age. Peter and Adam were wearingsoccer uniforms, and Marge pointed out thatone had just finished a game and the other washeading to one soon. Ah, the busy life of aharvester.

Greg Graham, a graduate student on theKTeV experiment, and his wife JenniferPashup-Graham worked as a team pickingMountain Mint, while Diana and AmandaTaylor crouched under an umbrella, not willingto let a little rain spoil their harvest.

And Andria Turpin and RoseanneStansbury made the long drive from theconcrete of Chicago to the soft grasses of theprairie. They ended their two-hour harvest byclimbing up to a survey tower and marveling atthe acres upon acres of history blowing softly inthe breeze. It was, they said, refreshing. ■

seated its new membership and selected officersfor 1997-98 at its September 27 meeting. Thegroup unanimously elected David Gerdes ofJohns Hopkins University chairperson andestablished that the duties of secretary will beshared by Tacy Joffe-Minor of NorthwesternUniversity, Greg Snow of the University ofNebraska and Darien Wood of NortheasternUniversity.

Gerdes succeeds Fermilab physicist PattyMcBride as chair; McBride, however, remainson the group as an ex-officio member. TheUEC also seated six new members fromdifferent laboratories and universities aroundthe country. During a recent interview, Gerdessaid he is looking forward to leading theimportant committee and he wanted all usersto contact the UEC with any questions orconcerns, as the body is the liaison for theuniversity and lab scientists with Fermilab.

“We are the formal voice with Labmanagement and URA,” said Gerdes.

The Johns Hopkins professor mentionedseveral key issues that he and the UEC want toaddress in this term. First, he mentionedkeeping an already strong focus on issuespertaining to younger physicists. He said theUEC must concern itself with those graduatestudents and postdocs who will continue inhigh-energy physics, as well as with those who

move out of the field. He stressed having moreactivities related to career development, resumepreparation and hosting speakers both withinphysics and outside the field. Gerdes also hopesto continue the strong relationship between theUEC and the Graduate Student Association.

The new UEC chair also commented onother issues, such as having a voice in thesearch for Fermilab’s next director and dealingwith site access issues. Gerdes mentionedcontinuing the progress with outreach andeducation, and reaching the policy makers andgovernment representatives in the nation’scapital.

“We see it as our role to monitor the stateof funding activities in D.C.,” said Gerdes,adding, “We also try to make [the governmentrepresentatives] aware of the great physics atthe Lab.”

Along with seating new members andelecting officials at the UEC meeting, PattyMcBride, the outgoing chair, thanked alloutgoing members for their hard work over thepast year. Also at the meeting, the UEC set upthe subcommittees that will tackle some ofthose key issues Gerdes mentioned earlier.McBride will lead the high-energy physicsdirection and funding subcommittee; KarenByrum, from Argonne National Laboratory,takes on quality of life issues; Joffe-Minor leadsthe Younger Physicists subcommittee; Snowwill chair the Outreach and Educationsubcommittee; Mary Anne Cummings, fromNorthern Illinois University, and NaomiMakins, from the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign, will cochair the Users’Meeting group; and Gerdes will lead the annualtrip to Washington, D.C.

Finally, over at the Central Utilities Building,electricians are busy rewiring to power theworld’s most powerful particle accelerator.

It is, as Steve Holmes, project manager forthe new Main Injector, said, “the mostambitious shutdown ever at Fermilab, in termsof the scope of activities not just on the MainInjector but across the whole site.”

Demolition begins“It was like the old days,” says Duane

Plant, project coordinator for the Main Ringde-installation, describing all the effort thatwent into emptying out the Tev-RF building atFZero and clearing out the 638-foot length oftunnel underneath. “People were actuallyhaving a good time, even though it was a lot oflong hours. I got to see some of the old Lab; itwas refreshing.”

Planning for the project itself was a job,which began in July. According to Plant:“Schedules had to be made, containers built,wheels and dollies ordered, schedules modified,fixtures ordered, people trained, labels anddestination tags made, schedules modified, tanktrucks rented, contracts written, elevators andcranes serviced and schedules modified.”

Removal was especially difficult because the equipment had been in these areas since1970–71. “We had to take [the equipment]out and save it,” said Plant, “so we had to takeit out nicely, find a place to put it, and keeptrack of it so we didn’t lose it.”

“One morning, as I watched 30-pluspeople in the tunnel removing, well,everything, I thought to myself, this is it, this is really it, ‘water to the ropes,’” he said. “I sawthe old ‘let’s go do it’ spirit right there in frontof me.”

More than 100 workers were involved, andbrought the project to completion ahead ofschedule: three days early on the building, 10 days on the tunnel.

Huge John Deere shovels fitted with two-ton steel demolition balls have now razed theTev-RF building—referred to as the “newaddition,” even though it was built 13 yearsago. It contained the Tevatron’s high-levelradiofrequency electronics, which will be placed in a building just to the east that used to house the Main Ring equipment.

The tunnel segment will also disappearsoon, with a reconfigured concrete tunnelconstructed in its place, allowing room for thenew beamlines from the Main Injector to theTevatron.

DZero upgradesOut at DZero, the upgrade for Run II is

in progress—an upgrade so complicated thatdesign and planning began in 1990, evenbefore Run I was launched.

A major component of DZero’s upgrade,says Project Manager Jim Christenson, is thestate-of-the-art tracking system inside the newmagnet, at the very center of the detector.

The $2-million superconducting solenoidmagnet, built and tested by Toshiba, is to thenaive eye an unimpressive piece of weldedindustrial artwork now lying unadorned in theDZero hall. But this giant tin can 2.8 meters inlength and 1.4 meters in diameter will enableDZero to tackle b quark physics and thematter-antimatter asymmetry called CPviolation, as well as a host of other interestingphysics topics. The magnet will be installedearly next year.

Inside the magnet will be DZero’s pièce de resistance: its tracking system, designed topinpoint the whereabouts of particles. Thetracking system consists of a silicon detector and a brand new scintillating fiber tracker.

The silicon detector consists of 830,000channels of individual detector strips, saysChristenson, with a spatial resolution of about10 micrometers: “They are very precise, andvery difficult to build.” The SiDet Facility (Labs C, D and A) is fabricating them.

Outside the silicon detector lies thescintillating fiber tracker. “This is our R&Dstunt,” says Christenson. “You’re only allowedone big stunt in an experiment, and this is it.”

The fiber tracker contains about 70,000fibers, each one a millimeter in diameter, laidout along eight concentric cylinders. Whenparticles pass through the cylinders, light isgenerated in the fibers that are struck and istransmitted to VLPCs (visible light photoncounters), enabling experimenters todetermine the particles’ trajectories.

The fiber tracker is being built in Lab 3, in the Village. “It’s a daunting task,” saysChristenson. “In a cross section about the size of a conference table, ribbons of tinyfibers need to be laid out to within 1/1,000of an inch.”

CDF upgradesLike DZero, CDF is relying on the SiDet

Facility to create wonderfully sophisticatedsilicon microvertex detectors. These newdetectors, SVXII and ISL, have over 700,000channels instead of the mere 40,000 of theoriginal SVX. According to Bob Kephart,comanager for the CDF upgrade, the newdevices will help the experimenters identify b decays from the top quark and venturefarther into b physics, a hot topic in particlephysics laboratories all over the world.

Myriad other activities are under way toimprove the detector. For instance: In thecollision hall, oversized cranes will soon lowertens of tons of steel shielding now bolted tothe ceiling. With the Main Ring no longerpassing through the hall, the shielding is notneeded. In its place will go new steelchambers for CDF’s muon detection system.

“Hoisting these pieces up to their new homes will be a major enterprise,” said Kephart.

Also, technicians are rebuilding thecalorimeters in the end plugs—100-ton spacecapsules that fit in the ends of the detector’slarge superconducting solenoid. The newversion, with scintillator tiles and optical fibers,will ensure a single uniform technology overthe whole detector, improve resolution, andseal cracks and gaps. It will be fast and“radiation hard”—and, unlike the oldertechnology, able to survive the demandingcollision rates the Tevatron will now produce,in conjunction with the new Main Injector.

That way,Fermilab will be able to switch power betweenthe two main Commonwealth Edison lines,improving the odds that the Lab will alwayshave power.

Out at the aging Central Utility Building,FESS is replacing all of the old instrumentationand controls for the Lab’s entire utility system.When that task is complete, an operator will beable to monitor and control all utility systemsfrom one location, around the clock.

As David Nevin, head of FESS, puts it, thenew Main Injector and the upgraded colliderdetectors won’t be worth anything if a 25-year-old electrical feeder fails—and shuts down theentire Lab for real. ■

I know technology must move forward,but it was with sadness in my heart that I readof the Main Ring closure. I started working forFermilab in 1970, insulating the coils thatproduced the first magnet to enter that ring. I continued to insulate those coils untilOctober 1990. I suppose I worked on everycoil in that ring until my retirement. I had somany friends among all the employees there:Jack Jagger, Richard Isminger, Steve Barath,Richard Douglas, Dorothy Taylor, just tomention a few that worked to accomplish thetask before us. LaDaune Trierweiler is a friendand was a co-worker from the time I beganthere. What an enjoyable time it was for me tobe a part of what I considered a familyatmosphere. It will always be close to my heart.
