Electronic Explorations ByMelNakahara
If you're up for some touring and don't want to venture beyond the comfort of your own home, here's something you could try with your whole family-and all you need is a home computer and a modem. This expedition will take you from Hawaii to Ohio with a short stopover in California, all at no charge.
The first step after logging into Hawaii FYI is connecting to the University of Hawaii's CARL system (%UHCARL). For the record, CARL stands for Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries. UHCARL not only connects you to the card catalogs of the Hamilton and Sinclair libraries but also to other

universities across the nation. Selecting Option 7, Out-of-state Libraries and Databases, from the main menu will produce a list of options, one of which will advance your journey to the University of California (Option 56).
If you are not that familiar with telecommunications, you may notice the word "connecting" on your screen and not realize what is really happening. You will actually be connecting to another system that is located within the University of California, and what appears on your screen originates from across the Pacific Ocean. The system is called MEL VYL Library System. You will only be able to access some of the options listed, two of which are NASA's Online Data and Information Service and the OCEAN Information Center. Another option takes you from California to Ohio. Entering "CFN" will start the next leg of your trip to Cleveland, Ohio.
When the connection is made, you will

be greeted by a cityscape, welcoming you to the Cleveland Free-Net Community Computer System (CFN). CFN is located on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. You will be given an opportunity to register on the system by filling out a questionnaire and sending in a request form. Registration will allow you to participate in the various forums and chat conferences and use the e-mail system.
An alternate option is to go in as a visitor. A visitor will have access to all conferences and be able to read but not to enter messages or mail or to participate in the chat areas.
The CFN system includes an Administration Building where you can get information and help on using the system, a Post Office option which permits e-mail to be sent and received, and a Communications Center for file transfers and online chatting. A Teleport option allows you to transport

FYI's popular Yo! FYI Raps chatline. Because the connection was there, "Honeysweet" started a conversation with "Cowboy" last year. "Honey-sweet" turned out to be Shana Valdez, who lived on Maui when this courtship began, and the smooth-talking "Cowboy" was Calvin Yoshida from Windward Oahu. They chatted, arranged to meet, dated, and are now making plans for a wedding next June.
We found out about all this when Calvin responded to the Hawaii FYI User Satisfaction Survey and noted at the bottom, "P.S. Thanks for FYI. Because of it, I'm getting married next year. Mahalo!"'"

One of the more attractive features of CFN is USA Today Headline News. USA Today also relays subject-specific news in various areas of the system. As a visitor, you'll probably spend the entire hour that is allotted visiting the different areas on the system. As the name implies, CFN can be accessed at no cost.
When it is time to return home, just click your heels three times and enter "// EXIT" twice. That will whisk you right back to Hawaii's own Manoa campus and out into Hawaii FYI again. Nodehopping is fun and can be exciting, and at the same time, it can become a valuable tool in expanding your information resources. Getting past the bits and bytes and techno-acronyms, there is a real, live community out there waiting for you! ...
