2017 Staff Accomplishments

Congrats to WVH teacher

Mr. John Walsh on receiving

the Prime Minister's Aware

for Teaching Excellence! Mr.

Walsh is one of our busiest

staff members in the school

from running our Biology lab

and growing the school’s

garden to writing grants,

providing spin and run clas-

ses and providing nutrition

breaks for school events.

Mr. Walsh’s next endeavor

is to get an outside basket-

ball court set up next to the

rugby field!

Stellar run in Jesus Christ Superstar

“Jesus Christ Superstar” is the ultimate tale of betrayal and redemption,

based on the Gospels’ version of the end of Jesus’s life, but through Judas’s

eyes and set in a modern context. Mr. Justin Nurse, our theatre and drama teacher at Waterford Valley High,

had a stellar run playing the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar this past

year in the St. John’s presentation of this musical theatre. Mr. Nurse is an

accomplished actor and singer as you can easily tell if you have had the

pleasure of seeing him perform.

Enjoy some of Mr. Nurse in Jesus Christ Superstar at https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Mr. Nurse Hosts the Janeway Telethon

Also Mr. Nurse did an outstanding job at hosting the Jane-

way telethon this year! For 33 years now the Telethon has

been taking place and this year marked the largest dona-

tions ever at 3.4 million and wwe believe it is in part due to

the wonderful hosting of Mr. Nurse :)

2017 Student Accomplishments

Volleyball Awards

Corner Book, NL – After a wonderful evening of great speakers, special guests and old

friends coming together the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association induct-

ed Earl Pike (Builder), Mike Murrin (Builder) and the 1995 Humber Jumpers

(Team) into its Hall of Fame the NLVA Hall of Fame. Preceding the Hall of Fame induc-

tions the NLVA handed out its 2017 Awards in the following categories below.

NLVA Senior High Female Athlete of the Year: Sarah Crocker (Finalist)

Senior High Team of the Year: Waterford Valley High Sr. Girls (Winner)

Public Speaking

The Public Speaking Club represented the school very well. Madison Kenny placed first in the Water-

ford Hospital Lion’s Club Speak-off. Madison also represented the school at the Regional Lion’s Club

Speak-off. Ben Pollard spoke at the Northwest Rotary Speak-off.

The Debate Team

Starting in March of 2017, Waterford Valley High began a Debate Team under

the coaching of Ms. Charlotte Cooze, a Newfoundland native who spent sever-

al years on the west coast of Canada working at schools that debated on the

national level. As previously there hadn’t been a debate team at Waterford

Valley, several level one and level two students joined to learn about formal

debate style. While it proved difficult to find other schools in the St. John’s

metro area to debate against, as few teams exist. Ms. Cooze took it upon her-

self to teach the students the ins and outs of parliamentary debate. A core of

five students learned the rules and regulations of debate, while discussing

topics such as the American Presidency, School Breakfast Programs and the

validity of GMOs and Food Sustainability. Despite not having the opportunity

to exercise their skills in an actual debate, students have a better understanding of the art and the

ground work has been laid for a stronger debate culture to develop within the school for years to come.

English and Fine Arts

Department

The English Department at Waterford Valley had an active and exciting

year. Our Drama and Theatre Arts students gained numerous awards and accolades at Drama Fest for

Not Myself Today. Our Drama teacher Mr. Justin Nurse gave a spectacular performance as Jesus in Je-

sus Christ Superstar. As well he was called back for an audition in Toronto for the Broadway hit Come

From Away.

Novel Cinema 3221

In Novel Cinema 3221 this year, students studied Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. After

exploring source texts and considering various adaptations, students then created their own Sherlock

Holmes films using stop-start animation. The winners of the 2016-2017 Novel Cinema 3221 Sherlock

WVH Drama and Theatre

2017 was a banner year for Dra-

ma and Theater here at the Val-

ley! Beginning with a moving Re-

membrance Day presentation,

followed by an energetic Charlie

Brown Christmas, an award win-

ning turn at Drama Fest in I Hate

Hamlet, a heartwarming produc-

tion of Not Myself Today and the

big finish, Fine Arts Night on

May 30! This year our students

created lasting friendships and

experienced the world through the lens of the arts, all while juggling, spinning plates, doing mono-

logues, creating short films and writing scenes. It is truly amazing to see young artists find their legs on

the stage and joy in the arts! We can all take pride in the efforts of our arts students as ambassadors

for our school in the community. Someday we will look back at these performers and say, “we knew

them when”.

Music

Our Music programs had an impressive term! Several of our groups participated in Rotary Music Festival and received awards:

Concert Choir (GOLD)

Concert Band (SILVER) Jazz Band (SILVER)

Our very own Elliott Morrison was selected to play in the Rotary Jazz Band, an auditioned ensemble made of students from many different schools. Well done, Elliott!

10

In addition to Rotary, our Concert Band had the opportunity to work with members of the National Arts Orchestra and performed wonderfully during a conducting workshop for teachers.

Many of our music students were also involved with the production of Not Myself Today, either as sing-ers or instrumentalists. It was a powerful show enhanced by our talented students.

Our Fine Arts Night was another huge success this year! With displays from our Visual Arts Department, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, String Group, and cabaret performances from Mr. Nurse's classes, it certainly showcased the many gifted students at WVH!

And our Applied Music 3206 class held a private concert for our Pervasive Needs class and learned some of their favorite jams! A great time for everyone there and a terrific way to end of our semester.

To all our grads, we will miss you!!! And to our returning students - can't wait to get back at it in Sep-tember!!!

Mathematics

Department

In February our students wrote the Blundon Math Contest administered by Memorial University (MUN) and written by students all across the province. One of our students, Matthew Kennedy, performed exceptionally well and was invited to attend the Blundon Mathematics seminar at MUN. Matthew was informed that he finished 3rd overall for the Province. Matthew received a certificate and a small monetary award for his accomplishment. Congratulations Matthew!

Pervasive Needs Students

This spring Ms. Smeaton’s class participated in spring planting. We did an experiment using hydroponics

versus planting in soil. The students, Niall McCann, Billy Gushue, April Churchill, Desmond Chan, Stephen

Lethbridge, Matthew Walker and Nikki Collins planted tomato and beans in the classroom in soil. With the

help of Ms. Margie Taylor we set up the hydroponic kit with bean and tomato seeds in the lab. Our hydro-

ponic plants grew bigger though they were planted later. Every one enjoyed seeing the seeds sprout and

measuring our classroom plants weekly. We visited the Autism Center toured the garden and greenhouse

and planted some bean plants there also. Thanks so much to Ms. Taylor for all her help, as well as Ms.

Bowe and Ms. Fitzgerald.

Ms. Smeaton’s class

The students in Ms. Pearson’s, Ms. Donahue’s and Ms. Nor-

man’s classes got out in our community 39 times this year! In

fact, they were all over the city!

Places we visited included: The Railway Coastal Museum, two

Holy Heart musicals, The Rooms, Lester’s Farm, The Fluvarium,

The Avalon and Village Malls, Hazelwood Elementary, The Tel-

egram, local libraries, metrobus rides, bowling, local parks,

CNIB, movie theatre, Sobeys, Tim’s, lunch at Wendy’s,

Cora’s & Smitty’s. We welcomed the St. John Therapy Dogs to

our classroom, had a special musical guest thanks to Ms.

Hounsell at the LRC and one of our GoBus drivers, Mr. Patrick Burke, played guitar and sang for us! Every-

one worked hard to raise the money for these activities by selling ice cream, cupcakes, muffins and cookies,

as well as having quite a few staff ‘Cook Days’. Thanks to our wonderful administration who funded some

of these activities and the GoBus, too! It was a great year filled with lots of adventures, learning and fun.

Brandon Sparkes

WVH is so proud of our Budding Artist!

For the past three years, Brandon has been attending Art & Design classes as part of his Functional

Curriculum programming. Brandon has completed Art 1201, 2200 and 3200 classes twice over, and

has learned so much! Most of us get into a comfort zone that

can be hard to venture out of when we are faced with trying

something new or different. Years ago, when Brandon started

high school, he would only color pre-drawn computer images

and refused to choose his own colors, instead referring to his

teachers to pick them for him. However, it was evident Bran-

don had a talent that needed to be nurtured and allowed to

grow.

And he has done exactly that! Now, Brandon can

choose the medium he wants to create in and what colors to

use. The proof of his evolution is shown in his confidence to

tackle almost any drawing task or assignment with the assis-

tance of his teachers, Ms. Andrea Norman and Ms. Sarah

Feltham. In turn, his openness to try new techniques has al-

lowed him to develop a style all his own; quirky, fun and dy-

namic. Brandon has created beautiful, funky and interesting

works in acrylic, watercolor, sharpie marker, graphite, pen and

ink, paper collage, oil and chalk pastel, wool, paper mache

and colored pencil. His artwork has been displayed during Fine Arts Night at WVHS for the last two

years and this year he submitted a beautiful paper collage in the 15th Annual Youth Week Art Exhibit

at City Hall. As part of his Personal Development course, Brandon has endeavored to create his own

line of Christmas cards. Finally, last year at graduation, on behalf of WVHS, Ms. Norman presented

Brandon’s parents with two, framed original works he completed that year.

If you are interested in viewing some of Brandon’s art work, he has his very own classroom

“gallery”- come on down to room 138 if you would like to see what he has accomplished this year!

Social Studies Department

NL Studies 2205

During the 2016-2017 school year, NL Studies was taught by Ms. Donna Gibbons and Ms. Lisa Saun-

ders. Students this year explored their creative talents through a variety of fine arts assignments de-

signed to be a reflection of NL history and culture. Projects included

Poppies for Remembrance Day, Ugly sticks, Traditional Art

Healthy Living

Students in the Healthy Living course took part in a Pita Pizza

cooking class. This was in an effort to learn about healthier eating

alternatives. As you can see, students had a good time making and

eating the pizzas.

Nutrition 2102/3102

Nutrition was taught by Ms. Lisa Saunders. Food is a basic but

integral part of daily life. In this program students were engaged

in learning and applying nutritional knowledge with a focus on en-

hanced wellness. Skills that are central to making sound deci-

sions regarding food selection, its preparation and nutritional con-

tent were taught. Classes explored issues concerning menu and

meal planning, food technology, food security and world hunger.

Students received hands on training in the lab with their teacher,

invited Chefs, tried some new foods and participated in a culinary

experience with the NL Federation of Agriculture. This was a fun

and memorable class for many!

Social Justice Group The Social Justice Group at Waterford Valley High School has been very active this year. This group of

students works to support various charities and raise awareness of social issues among our school communi-ty. We began the year by collecting 2175 lbs of food during our We Scare Hunger campaign at Halloween and we were off to a great start!

We collected Christmas stockings from within our school and donated these to Street Reach which provides outreach support to individuals who are struggling with issues related to food security, safe and affordable housing, unemployment or poverty. We also organized a pyjama day in support of the Janeway Children’s Hospital. We were invited to participate in Eastern Health’s Music and Memory project and col-lected iPods for people in nursing homes and other care organizations who suffer from Alzheimer’s and de-mentia. The personal music playlist provided for them on these devices enables them to find renewed mean-ing and connection in their lives. Music can often bring participants back to life, enabling them to feel like themselves again, to converse, socialize and stay present.

In February we held a Book and Bake Sale with proceeds donated to WE Charity and in March our Coffee House showcased many talented WVHS students and raised money for the Pottle Center. This is a drop-in social centre for consumers of mental health services in St. John’s. As one of our last events for the year, several of our members participated in St. John’s first Hand-a-thon. Memorial University medical stu-dents hosted the event to assemble 3D-printed plastic hands for disabled children in Zimbabwe.

We thank everyone who supported us this year and we look forward to continued support in the next school year!

The School Vegetable Garden

Thank you to the students who last year and this year have helped to clear land, place topsoil and plant vegetables. This project was funded by the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador to promote awareness of the benefits of local agriculture to health and combatting climate change through reduce use of fossil fuels in food transportation and production of fertilizers. This project will provide food for the Soup Kitchen project which helps out Street Reach with weekly fresh prepared food.

Soup Kitchen for Street Reach

WVH students, along with teacher sponsors, Cheryl Tucker and Steve Moores, volunteer their time Thurs-day afternoons making soup and chili to support Thrive’s Street Reach program. Formed in 2005, Street Reach supports individuals who are struggling with food security. They operate in the downtown core of St. John’s, and with the help of school soup clubs like the one at WVH, feed nutritious soup, casseroles and baked goods to their clients every Tuesday and Thursday evening. On average, they serve 150 bowls of soup a week, which would not be possible without the coordinated help of volunteer soup kitchens like the one at our school. WVH Soup Kitchen plans to continue their partnership with Street Reach for many years to come.

Kids Eat Smart

Breakfast Program

Waterford Valley High’s Breakfast Program, in conjunction with the Kids Eat Smart Organization and its

many teacher, student, and community volunteers, operated from 8:30- 8:45, five days a week, to provide

a free, grab and go breakfast. The program was open to anyone at WVH and offered fresh fruit, yogurt,

cheese sticks, granola and Nutrigrain bars, applesauce and 100% fruit juice boxes. Occasionally, our stu-

dents were treated to a hot grab and go breakfast prepared by Ms. Saunders and a group of NDP volun-

teers that was served from our regular canteen location. This breakfast program works on the premise that

students need nutritious food to provide the energy they need to concentrate and learn. A healthy break-

fast helps our students get off on the right foot every morning!

Our Breakfast Program will gladly accept monetary and food donations to help fill our KES cupboards. If

you would like to donate, you can drop off a breakfast item (peanut free please!) or a monetary donation to

the school in September, or anytime throughout the year. You can also make your donation online at

www.kidseatsmart.ca and designate our school to receive your gift. It’s important that we fill our KES cup-

boards to ensure our students start their days well nourished and ready to learn.

Europe Trip 2018 There is still a limited amount of space left on the Easter Trip to Europe for 2018. Mr. Smith will be taking students on a “once in a lifetime” educational trip to Paris, France where students will visit Versailles and the Louvre. Then we travel by train to Lucerne, Switzerland to visit the Lion Monument and Kapellbrücke. Then it is off to Mount Pilatus, the majestic 6,387-foot peak that towers over Lucerne. Next as we will travel through Liechtenstein on the way to Munich we will visit Neuschwanstein Castle. Finally, after a stay in Mu-nich we go on to Salzburg and Vienna before returning home on Day 11 of this incredible itinerary. For more information please contact Mr. Bob Smith at [email protected]

Mental Wellness Committee

Congratulations to both the Student and Teacher Mental Wellness Committees on a very productive year.

We were successful in obtaining funding from the ArtsSmarts program to produce a play on mental health. The play was entitled Not Myself Today and depicted the struggles of a teen dealing with mental health. It was a powerful play that showed how supports are available to our youth and how they can lead productive lives.

The Not Myself Today performance was the opening event for our mental health week held during the first week on May. There were numerous activities planned throughout the week such as the community lunch, therapy dogs, yoga, and physical literacy activities (City of St. John’s). We also had over 25 guest speakers provide their expertise on various topics ranging from addiction, finan-cial wellness, and positive thinking.

The student committee also continued with the Post it Project in which positive messag-es where placed on the locker of every student in the school.

In September, we hope to have two beautiful murals painted on the walls of WVH send-ing encouraging thoughts to all our students every day.

Thank you to the hard work and dedication to so many students and teachers.

Prom and Safe Grad 2017 We would like to congratulate the 2017 Graduating class of WVH for a successful Prom. Nearly 1000 members of the WVH community gathered to celebrate this momentous occasion. The graduates would like to extend a great thank you to the parents, teachers and the organizing committee for everything they did to make this year’s Prom such a memorable event. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved with our extraordinary Safe Grad Parent Committee. Safe Grad 2017 was a tremendous success; from the under the sea deco-rating theme to the candy carnival and all the attractions

and events in between! The staff and administration along with this year's graduates would like to acknowledge the amount of effort that went into making this event possible and to thank the organizers.
