2008 is quickly coming to a close, and as we look back over the last 11 months, we have had a year with change, successes, and less than successes. We need to learn from those areas where we were less than success-ful and strive to make what we do as a Chapter in 2009 fun, entertaining and safe for all members that choose to join us in any activity. In 2009 our focus will be to provide some non riding activities, and many more Chapter riding activities for our members choice. We have asked our members, and have been accepted, to increase the yearly Salem HOG membership to $20.00 with the hope that this will curtail the constant need to find a fund raiser and people willing to work them. By moving our yearly Poker Run back into the traditional month of July, we may take a higher risk of rain, but we hope it will bring more attendance and also more revenue to the Chapter. We have some ideas already working for our Poker run for 2009. We plan to attempt to ward off the constant request for donations to our Chapter Members during meetings, but will always allow any and all concerns to provide us with paper documentation to put on our table for all to see. And to fill that time we plan to talk more about upcoming and past rides so everyone will be more aware of the many ride choices and people’s opinions of them. With the addition of an activity person coming on board with Salem Harley-Davidson in 2009, we hope to increase our ability to be aware of Dealership events and Chapter participation with them. We are trying a new twist to our annual Chapter Party, and that is moving it to after the holiday rush, in an at-tempt to reduce the Holiday Season Stress levels we all encounter. We will look to see how that change was received after the Party and handle 2009 accordingly. We have already booked a place for a party in 2009 during the Holiday season if that is what our members decide we should do. I want to sincerely thank our out going Chapter Board members, Jackie, Bob, Sue, Catherine, and Patty, for the time and energy they spent working for our Chapter in 2008 as well as 2007 . And welcome our new Chapter Board members Leanne Long, Wendy Graves, Louise Allen, and George Allen. I feel very comfortable that they will bring the increased enthusiasm we need to make our Chapter more fun for all. And to the many volunteers that helped once or many times all year, thank you for being there, and I hope you will return for more in 2009. Have a safe and enjoyable Holiday season.

Our 2008 Oregon State Airports ride has come to an end. Look-ing through the pictures, it’s obvious that some people really had a good time doing this, and the albums, and the work that went into them are just amazing. I won’t know for a while how we did in our challenge to Sunset, but I’ll let everyone know when we find out how they did as a Chapter. We had six Salem HOG members get all of the airports:

Mark DostalBill FrancisRic McKenzieWendy GravesBob Brownkaren Brown

We had 31 total participants which include all above plus: Bob FanshierPaula FanshierJoane DostalMarsh FrancisJan HoweLouie SchroederMarlene SchroederJohn BowersDave NicholsPatty NicholsDon Jacopi

We had a grand total of 315 airport visits.

Using our June membership roster, we had 315/120 or an av-erage airports/member of 2.6250 (for our chapter challenge with Sunset HOG).Thanks to everyone who participated, and I hope everyone had fun with it.Now it’s time to start looking at our challenge for 2009, and we already have some good suggestions to discuss at our De-cember meeting.

I could probably write a book on the 1st friday nighter. Terry parks really went way out of his way to make me feel welcome and included. The friday nighters is what brought me into salem hog. I rode a few times as a guest and then just joined. I was already a member of pioneer hog, but they didn’t have the friday nighters and i wanted to ride.

Things We Learned on the Road to Milwaukee!1. Always keep the map readily accessible.2. U-turns are a great time for a smoke break.3. You can never have too many bungee cords or cargo nets.4. Four sets of eyes may be better than one, but that doesn’t mean any of them will see that next exit sign in

time. (See lesson #2)5. Wildlife that you would enjoy seeing from the inside a car seems much wilder, and larger, when you are on a

motorcycle.6. Never stare a bull buffalo in the eye. 7. You cannot get a picture of that deer along the road when you are tearing along at - - the legally posted speed

limit.8. Some Minnesota State Troopers are very nice!9. Super 8’s have much nicer towels than Motel 6 but after 500 miles you really don’t care a whole lot!10. Deer know exactly where you can shoot them and where you can’t. They will even sit along the road to look

at the hunters who can’t shoot them in the National Parks.11. Most people outside of Oregon really do pronounce the name of our state “orygone”.12. People from Italy have absolutely no idea that Oregon is even a state.13. Grasshoppers hurt – they are also really hard to clean off of a camera lens.14. Deleting pictures has to be done very slowly and with extreme caution. 15. Grasshoppers hurt – hail hurts worse.16. The wind really does blow all of the time in South Dakota!17. Most roadside gas stations do not carry “windproof” butane lighters (and they tend to look at you very strange-

ly when you ask for them).18. There is always a party in Sturgis.19. Just because Milwaukee builds great bikes doesn’t mean they have figured out the whole road thing yet.20. Pictures don’t seem near as important when you are pretty sure you are suffering from frostbite and hypo-

thermia.21. People will pay $4 for a bottle of water and wait two hours in line to get it if the party seems important enough

to stay.22. There are still Good Samaritans in the world. (OK, and Army officers are not as bad as I sometimes say!)23. You can buy an official Harley Davidson toilet seat.24. Dealer pins are addictive.25. Hotel room keys are not – they also do not work at different hotels no matter how many times you try.26. No matter how fast you go there will always be somebody who wants to go faster.27. If your name’s in the drawing you should stay long enough to hear who they call.28. Minnesota dairy cows stink every bit as badly as Oregon cows do.29. While you can never have too many sunset pictures, there is a limit to the number of architectural shots the

male mind can handle.30. You can pack 32 pounds of stuff into one 10x12x8 postal box.31. Bugs can be splattered on both sides of your windshield!

Salem ABATE Biker Night Tommy’s Welcome Inn in Jefferson is where this years Biker Night took place, with about 74 people showing up. As usual very noisy, but everyone having fun catching up with each other. Lots of door prizes. I think Karla and Taci were having a contest to see which one of them could win the most door prizes. Actually I think maybe that Karla and Dan got the most. I won a gift certificate to Tommy’s for $10.00 also a flashlight/tool kit. Food specials were Spaghetti ( too messy) burgers/fries or chicken strips/tator tots, cost $5.00-$6.00. The 50/50 was $129.00 which Rick from Mid Valley Cycles won & he very generously gave it back to Salem Abate to be used for the Toy Run . There was a guy from Florida (Biker) that really spent a lot of time selling tickets, which really helped the total. All together with the sale of the tickets, 50/50 ( the whole thing) they collected $598.00, which will be donated to Jefferson Fire Dept. and Aumsville Fire Dept. along with lots of toys and canned food. Way to Go!!! Sheryl usually handles the Biker Nights, but was sick, so her friend Mersha came and helped, also Rick & Heidi --they all did a fantastic job. Thanks to all the Bikers ( many different groups) for showing up. You have all contributed to making a better Christmas for those less fortunate.
