Harmony Day Monday 21st March

2016 theme is our diversity is our strength

Harmony Day is ….

a day to remember and celebrate our diversity

a day where activities and celebrations help students to understand how Australians of different

backgrounds live together

a great opportunity for students to learn that not only do they share common ground with other cultures, but

also that our differences make Australia a special place to live

At Guthrie Street we will celebrate Harmony Day by ……….

sharing old photographs of family members

telling stories about the student’s family history What students and families need to do during Week 8 (March 14th – 18th)… A. collect old photographs of family history and talk about them at home. If possible bring them to school to

share with the class. B. If you are an Indigenous Australian

discuss your tribe/family/cultural group name

discuss what area is your family’s part of the country

discuss special family stories

discuss any language of your people that you might know C. If your family came from another country before settling in Australia

discuss what country they come from

discuss how they travelled to Australia

discuss special family stories about your ancestors/family

discuss what your ancestors/family did when they first came to Australia

discuss any words or phrases you might know using the language of your ancestor’s/family’s culture

The information and photographs your child has collected will be utilized during activities and discussions on Monday the 21st of March as they celebrate Harmony Day with their class.

The official colour for Harmony Day is orange. If your child has some clothing which is orange they can wear it

on that day. E.g. an orange ribbon, t-shirt, socks. Please do not go out and buy something for that day.
