Manufacturing Career Day Sheds Light on Training and Employment Opportunities

From all indications, the Manufacturing Career Day held at OhioMeansJobs Stark County on March 22, 2018, was a huge success. The focus was to provide public

awareness of the types of positions in the manufacturing industry such as Welding and CNC Machining that are in-demand and offer more than just a job--- a career with wage growth and stability.

A panel of representatives from Akron Testing Laboratory and Welding School, Akron CNC Training Center, Stark State College, LSI Industries, The M.K.Morse Co., and Ohio Gratings, fielded questions about welding and CNC machining occupations. Wages, length of training, work environments, scholarship opportunities, job prospects and other details regarding these career areas were discussed.

Each of the schools represented on the panel along with staff from area career centers such as Buckeye Career Center, Portage Lakes Career Center and Alliance Career Center, provided a brief overview of their respective programs related to manufacturing. Afterward, participants were able to connect with presenters and browse through their displays to learn more about their specific programs or industry.

A morning and an afternoon session was planned to accommodate varying schedules of interested persons. Both sessions were well attended and included some of the youth from the Comprehensive Case Management Employment Program (CCMEP) contracted vendors such as Tri-County JOG, CommQuest (Next Level Employment), Project REBUILD and Goodwill, along with the general public.

The message was clearly communicated by the passionate speakers that to keep the local economy thriving, we need people with good attitudes and good skills who can earn livable wages to support themselves and their families while maintaining and growing the industrial base. Opportunities for training and employment are abundant. Participants were encouraged to contact the local training providers and services through OhioMeansJobs of Stark and Tuscarawas Counties to tap into those resources.

“Thank you” to all of the presenters and our staff from OhioMeansJobs who helped to make the event such a success.

Workshop Event - Employable Me

Nearly everyone has some kind of barrier to employment: not enough education, too old / too young, no internet connection, disabilities, lack of a driver’s license, and so on. There are numerous things which

can hold a person back from getting their dream job. However, no barrier is insurmountable. There are many things that can be done to get over or around or through any barrier to employment.

The OhioMeansJobs centers in Stark and Tuscarawas counties are presenting a special workshop to help individuals overcome their barriers to employment and get a job. This special workshop is entitled “Employable Me – Getting and Keeping a Job”. We will be sharing tips on job searching and showing a 10 Step Process for overcoming barriers to employment. As a part of this workshop, we will be hosting a panel discussion with human resource professionals from local companies. These panel members will discuss what they are looking for when they hire new employees and answer audience questions about job searching and overcoming barriers.

Everyone is invited to attend “Employable Me – Getting and Keeping a Job” on Tuesday May 8th, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. at the Stark county office and from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Tuscarawas office. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. The event is part of Ohio’s In-Demand Jobs Week, May 7 -11, 2018. Please join us for this great workshop during In-Demand jobs week!

Stark Tuscarawas Workforce Development Board (STWDB) Executive Director Jennifer Meek Eells attended Jobs For Ohio’s Graduates (JOG) Career Development Conference at the John S. Knight Center in Akron

on March 20th. Employer and community agency representatives spent the day with JOG program-enrolled youth from Stark, Summit, and Medina Counties assisting them in workforce competitions that included Employability Skills, Decision-Making, Interviewing, Public Speaking, Telephone Etiquette, Application Techniques, Team Challenge, and Employment Process.

Pictured on left is Joel Crites, owner of Micro Fantasy, talking with a group of JOG students about entrepreneurship and how he is turning his “good idea” into a profitable business. “I was so impressed with the JOG young adults who participated in today’s events,” said Director Meek Eells. “These young people are going to be well-prepared to come into the workforce. Our workforce board truly appreciates the good work the JOG program is doing to engage our young workforce in activities that directly connect them with the world of work.”

JOG Holds Youth Career Development Conference

Stark Tuscarawas Workforce Development Board (STWDB) Executive Director Jennifer Meek Eells served as a panelist for a workshop facilitated by the National Skills Coalition at the National Association of

Workforce Boards (NAWB) Conference in Washington DC March 24th – 27th, 2018. The workshop focused on advocacy for policy change, and Executive Director Meek Eells discussed the Comprehensive Case Management and Employment Program (CCMEP) operations in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties. She shared that workforce boards can advocate for public policy changes that help drive workforce initiatives. Better policy alignment of the participation requirements under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program with the performance metrics required under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) would assist workforce boards in coordinating and funding more robust services to job seekers and employers, as Ohio is doing with CCMEP.

Mathematica Training Held on CCMEP

On March 16-17th, Mathematica Policy Research staff members visited Stark County to facilitate a training session on Goal4 It!™, a science-informed framework that strengthens self-regulation skills

and helps individuals achieve goals. This training opportunity was coordinated through the ODJFS Office of Workforce Development and made possible through the USHHS Office of Family Assistance technical assistance resources. Attendees included local Comprehensive Case Management and Employment Program (CCMEP) youth vendors and service providers from both Stark and Tuscarawas Counties, ODJFS Office of Workforce Development staff, and representatives from the local Sisters of Charity Foundation and the regional Office of Family Assistance office.

Some of the key science-informed strategies of the Goal4 It!™ approach is to help individuals build their adult capacities in strengthening their core life skills, helping them reduce external sources of stress, and to support responsive relationships within and beyond the program. Attendees were able work in small groups to try the Goal4 It!™ tools and ask questions and provide feedback as to how they can utilize the tools in their own organizations.

Attendees will have the opportunity to “road test” or pilot the Goal4 It!™ framework in the next couple of weeks.

The Mathematica training was well attended and included an array of agencies

and providers involved with the CCMEP Program from both Stark and Tuscarawas

Counties.

“I liked all of the open doors that were presented;

websites, contacts, and actually discovering your

Attended: Writing an Effective Resume

“I wanted updated information because it’s been a long time since I’ve made a resume. I

learned I could have 2-3 different resumes, each targeting different

employers and different skills.”

Community Family Health Center, located at 2014 Bellevue Ave in Dover, Ohio, has opened a much needed dental clinic in their primary care medical facility after the dental program operated by the

Tuscarawas County Health Department closed at the end of 2016. Serving adults and children residing in the Tuscarawas County area, the dental clinic accepts Medicaid and payments made directly by patients to provide low-cost care for their teeth.

This was a project of the Community Mental Healthcare. “After the primary care clinic opened, the agency saw that a lot of people were not able to get dental care,” said J.J. Boroski, executive director of Community Mental Healthcare. “Anybody’s welcome here,” said Boroski, “It’s not only for one demographic.”

Clinic dentist, Larry Bucher, a North Canton resident, was retired from nearly 28 years in private practice before accepting the position with Community Mental Healthcare. He encourages people to visit the clinic even if they have never been to a dentist, or have not been examined by one in many years. He said people should not be embarrassed to visit the clinic – “we are here to help people, not judge them.”

Lori Douglass, Resource Room Supervisor at the Tuscarawas County OhioMeansJobs center attended the ribbon cutting ceremony & open house on March 8th celebrating the opening of the new dental clinic. Douglass stated, “It’s a beautiful facility and a welcome resource to the residents of our county.”
