L ast week I had the privilege of listening to our future leaders deliver their School Captain speeches to their peers. We had eleven incredibly brave students step outside their comfort zones and speak in front of their peers

All students displayed the many qualities of great leaders and presented a fantastic example of our College values. I congratulate all the nominees and look forward to working with 2020 leadership team. Captains will be announced at the beginning of Step Up on November 25th. Students have demonstrated enormous growth in their ability to write and their reading comprehension. It is never too late to read with your children and we encourage all families to listen to their children read. Reading allows children to access all aspects of the curriculum and is critical for students to achieve success. Our Year 12 students and students studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject are still doing exams, they finish next Wednesday with the Indonesian exam. Our Step Up program begins on Monday 25th November and we are very excited to trial this new initiative.

Year 11 Pre-Driver Education Program

N ext week, November 19th-22nd our Year 11 students are booked in to attend the two-day Pre-Driver Education Program in Elmore. The program is designed to provide young drivers with the skills and techniques to ensure they are safe, responsible road users. They do not need their Learners Permit to complete the program. As such, we feel that this will be a very valuable

program for our students and we expect that all students will attend.

Students have been divided into two groups with approximately 19 students in each group. There will be no cost this year for the program, due to the very generous sponsorship from the Elmore Charity Ball committee. If you have not done so, please approve your student on XUNO. Group 1 – Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th November Group 2 – Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd November Year 11 student’s not attending the Driver Education program on the above dates will not be required to attend school. It is advised that they could use this time to make an appointment with Mr Huddy to confirm subject selections ahead of the step-up week commencing the following week. Thank you, Lauren Pellegrino

SRC Tryouts Day

O n Friday 8 November, twenty Year 10 and 11 students made their way over the road to the Rochester Sports Club for a day of leadership, teamwork, games and other SRC related business. The day started with an excellent whole-group discussion. Several concerns were discussed calmly and with many great ideas being shared. Any of

the students present would make admirable members of the 2020 SRC executive.

2019 SRC President Jessica Horkings took time out from her exam preparation to assist with all aspects of the day. Her assistance was invaluable. It was also great to have a helpful and involved group to work with, as this year we had fewer past students available to assist.

The selection process for the 2020 executive is always challenging, and this year is no exception. We aim to have a balance of Year 11 and 12 students in the group. The announcement of the 2020 SRC executive will be made at the same time as the 2020 School Captains are announced, during the first week of Step-Up.

CCLLEN VET AWARDS 2019

T his year there were 30 students completing a Vocational Education and Training subject (VET) as part of their school program. This included Building & Construction, Engineering, Hospitality – Kitchen Operations, Hair and Beauty, Animal Studies and Automotive. In addition to the VET program we also had a number of students completing School Based Apprenticeships in a range of areas.

On Tuesday evening (12th Nov) the VET Awards Night was held at the Moama Bowling Club, with our students represented in Building and Construction and Kitchen Operations. The VET awards are open to all secondary schools in our region. To be eligible for this award students must have completed work experience in the field of their course and were assessed by their VET Trainer and the employer they worked for. From there, students were short listed and interviewed by a panel of judges. On the night Seth McLure (Building & Construction), Casey Ryan and Jasmin Malham (Hospitality – kitchen Operations) represented RSC. Congratulations to both Seth McLure and Jasmin Malham for winning Student of the Year in their respective courses. We are very proud of you.

A nother proud moment was when past student, Kelly Shotton, was announced as the guest speaker for the night. Kelly was our Sports Captain in 2014 and has since tried many pathways, including a Traineeship at REDHS, work at Subway and traveling overseas. She is now following

a long-harboured desire to do a trade apprenticeship. Kelly is now a second year apprentice electrician, working at Foodmach in Echuca and loving it. Her words of wisdom to all students who attended were, “Do what you love,” “Follow your own pathway” and “Girls, don’t let anyone tell you can’t do something. If you want it – go for it!”

Ancient Egypt

7 A students are learning about the Ancient Egyptian mummification process in History class. To make this learning hands on, they

have experimented with mummifying a lemon. The students are excited to observe what happens to their two samples of lemons

over the next two weeks.

Year 7s Shine in Five Minute Writing Tasks

“If kindness was an object, it would be a ball that glows like a

baby sun. It releases warmth and happiness. I think it would glow

bright and holding it makes your hands just the right temperature.

It would smell of fresh peaches and things sweet. Or perhaps, it

would smell familiar, something you know but can’t quite put

your finger on it”. Charlie L.

“If kindness was an object, it would be a star. With six pointed

edges, it couldn’t be missed. It stands out from the crowd, in

every wonderful way. It glows and is true. It sees the light in

everyone, even if they don’t see the light in themselves”. Nissa W

Students from 7A and 7B studied a doughnut, drew a doughnut, ate a doughnut and then wrote about where the hole had gone. Here are some great pieces of writing from our very talented Year 7s. "I still believe that the hole is floating around in space. I still believe that if you look hard and long enough, you would find it. I don't think anyone has ever found it. But someone will one day. I think that no one has cared enough". Justin C "I believe that the hole of the fluffy doughnut that I have just consumed, is in fact gone. I believe that when I first bit into said doughnut, the hole that was once there, disappeared. I believe it has travelled through space and time itself, and has ruined the space time continuum. It has altered the future and past and has in turn destroyed life as we know it. Our fate has been sealed and our destiny changed". Jude R "A hole. What is a hole? Does a hole need an object around it to exist or is it always around us? Is the hole now a part of us? Or did the hole never exist?" Tayla T

Year 10 Indonesian Class Cooking Up A Storm

A t the end of Term 3, the Year 10 Indonesian students had fun preparing yummy Indonesian dishes in the Home Eco kitchen. In small groups, they made apple fritters (apel goreng), Indonesian salad with spicy peanut sauce (gado-gado), fried rice (nasi goreng) and beef curry (kari sapi). After cooking, they had the opportunity to taste all the culinary delights.

Year 10 Indonesian Excursion to Bendigo

T he Year 10 Indonesian students enjoyed a fabulous day in Bendigo on Thursday 7th November. Upon arrival, they hit the ground running, wandering around Pall

Mall searching for answers based on a list of clues given to them in Indonesian. They then gathered for a banquet at the Malayan Orchid Restaurant. Their lovely hosts, restaurant owners Pam and Bob Yam, introduced dish after dish to them. They sportingly sampled all the yummy meals served. Melanie McNair turned sweet 16 on that day and everyone had a chance to celebrate her big day with her. The return journey went smoothly and the students returned to school exhilarated but tired.
