We have had a busy start to our year! Now that our reading stamina is built, we have been becoming nonfiction readers and using different strategies to gather information. Mrs. Jones and Miss Nicoletti have been sharing students during reading groups to make sure we are reaching the needs of
every child, this is new and we are very excited! Math has been packed with number sense and also building our stamina to become better mathematicians. Word work rotations have begun to make spelling more hands on and again meet every need of every child. Finally, we had a blast on our field trip to
Green Meadows Farm, where we got to meet a ton of animals and pick our own pumpkins!

Mrs. Olson, we are practicing many skills with interesting chapter books, such as making connections, asking questions, and visualizing. In Math, third grade friends have worked on rounding, reading and writing large numbers, and have dabbled in regrouping. When we meet with Miss
Nicolazzi, we practice these skills in small groups. Science has taken us into the Solar System and we even made a model! Social Studies had us studying maps, as well as designing our own. We are really looking forward to our first field trip to First Stage Theater in Milwaukee to see James and the
Giant Peach!
Third grade has gotten off to a fun and exciting start! Our third graders are doing a wonderful job becoming more independent readers, writers, and mathematicians. In Guided Reading, we have worked hard to choose “just right” books that we can read on our own. When we meet with

Lakewood’s
Mathematics
Our Lakewood middle school mathematics courses are taught by Mrs. Destree and Mrs. Singer. Here are some updates happening in each grade.
Currently in 6th grade, we have a unique opportunity for our teaching style. For the past nine years, Mrs. Destree and Mrs. Singer have been team teaching both classes to enhance learning in the classroom. This year Mrs. Rawlins will join us two days a week to work on accelerating student math skills. We look forward to incorporating different strategies and allowing the students to use the 21st century learning skills of collaboration, creative thinking, critical thinking, and communication.
In 7th grade, the classes are taught separately. One group goes at an accelerated pace, to begin incorporating Pre-Algebra skills during the last trimester. This will allow these students to take Algebra in 8th grade.
The other class will be trying different instructional strategies including a blended/flipped classroom to work on individual growth and provide more one-on-one learning opportunities with the teacher.
Our 8th grade is divided into Pre-Algebra and Algebra classes. The Pre-Algebra class works on skills to prepare for the high school Algebra course. Some concepts include linear functions, graphs, various algebraic equations, slope, geometric relationships, and the Pythagorean Theorem. The other 8th grade class is Algebra. This course is similar to the one taught at Wilmot Union High School and will provide students with an opportunity of advancing to Geometry or Honors Geometry their freshman year. Some concepts include solving algebraic equations, graphing linear functions and inequalities, polynomials, quadratic and exponential functions, and analyzing data/probability.
All of our textbooks are online at my.hrw.com and there are videos to help students with each lesson too! If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mrs. Destree (ext. 126) or Mrs. Singer (ext. 128). Remember that... Math is the only subject that counts!

Congratulations to the Raider Marching Band on a fantastic performance in the Wilmot Homecoming Parade. Drum Major Victoria Livingston led the band along the parade route. The band members worked hard to memorize their music and perfect their marching skills all within the first four weeks of school. The fourth grade beginner band is off to an exhilarating start this year! As the fourth graders continue to practice their music, they have been earning musical karate belts. All of them have earned their white belts and most are working toward either their yellow or orange belts now. In fifth grade, the band members are also working diligently to continue earning their karate belts. If you see them carrying their cases around with all of their karate belt ribbons, please be sure to congratulate them on their hard work!
The middle school choir is currently at its highest enrollment in many years. It is inspirational to see so many students coming together to experience the joy of music through singing. In its first year as an elective at Lakewood, the Music Excel students are very busy composing their first compositions. By using Finale Notepad software, the students are
composing music that they and their friends can play. The program allows instant playback, so the students are able to hear what they are writing, continue to improve it, and develop their compositional skills. The Jazz Band is now in full swing! 15 of Lakewood’s finest middle school musicians are exploring the genres of swing and rock music. Throughout the year we will also be learning how to play funk, ballads, the blues, and Latin-inspired varieties.
We are very pleased with our new music room! There is much more floor space and the vaulted ceiling allows for great acoustics. The large practice room also allows for instrumental lessons and elementary general music classes to occur simultaneously so we can maximize the amount of music time that can be offered to each student at Lakewood. Parent Tips:Parent Tips:Parent Tips:Parent Tips:
Is it true that some kids
have neurological
conditions that make it far
more difficult for them to
remain calm and
self-controlled? You bet.
Is it also true that there
are many things without
our control…with all types
of children…that can up
the odds that they will
behave in ways that avoid
their placement on our
last nerve?
Are you a parent who errs
on the side of assuming
that your child can’t help
but being out of control?
Or are you one who
assumes that with the
right type of love, limits,
structure, training, and
expectations, they can
usually remain fun to be
around?
Below is a list of some old-
fashioned, yet powerful
strategies:
SleepSleepSleepSleep
Unlike adults, many
children get hyper when
they are tired.
DowntimeDowntimeDowntimeDowntime
Too many activities create
stressed families.
Stressed families create
kids who act out to relieve
their stress.
LimitsLimitsLimitsLimits
When kids lack solid
limits, they tend to act out
to get them. Be sure to
set limits by describing
what you are willing to do
or allow…rather than
telling them how they
should act. Example: You
are welcome to stay in the
same room with us as
long as your voice is quiet
and you aren’t running
around.
Predictable routinesPredictable routinesPredictable routinesPredictable routines
Kids thrive when these
and other routines are
more or less routine:
Getting ready in the
morning, dinnertime,
bedtime, family reading time, homework time, play time,
etc.
PracticePracticePracticePractice
Some parents experiment
with “sitting practice”.
They have fun with their
child and challenge them
to remain seated and
quiet for a small amount
of time. They set the timer and
make a big deal out of their
child meeting a
specific goal. They
gradually increase the goal as
time goes by.
Good foodGood foodGood foodGood food
Junk food tends to create
junky behavior.
ExerciseExerciseExerciseExercise
Exercise calms the brain. My
mother must have known this
when she’d say, “Oh...looks
like you need to run around
the yard and burn off some of
that steam.” Any
reluctance to do as she asked,
automatically
created a long list of chores
that serves as
another form of exercise.
Very limited screen timeVery limited screen timeVery limited screen timeVery limited screen time
The more kids interact with
screens the more difficult they
have with self-regulation.

Kids tend to act our any anxie-
ty or tension
presented in the home.
