OVERCOMING THE ODDS: CHARLES STRATTON • When Charles Stratton was born in Connecticut in 1838, he weighed a healthy nine pounds, eight ounces. However, his parents soon noted that he wasn’t growing like other children. A malfunctioning pituitary gland slowed his growth, so at age four, he was only 25 inches long. He never grew much beyond that height. At the age of five he weighed exactly as much as he had at the age of 15 months. He was perfectly normal except for his size. He was not misshapen or ugly, but instead was perfectly proportioned, very attractive, and extremely intelligent. At the age of five Charles was first introduced to Phineas T. Barnum, and Barnum knew his fortune was made. • Charles’ name was changed to General Tom Thumb, and he was billed as being 11 years old and from England, when in reality he was only 5 and from Connecticut. (When they travelled to Europe, he was billed as being American, and when he grew older his age was revised downward.) After being put on stage in a comedy routine with two 8-foot giants, Tom Thumb became the darling of the world. 15,000 people a day flocked to see him, each paying a quarter entrance fee. • World tours were extremely successful. On a trip to England Barnum very much wanted the publicity that would result from an audience with the Queen. But the Queen was in mourning and refused to see any visitors. So Barnum merely announced that he was leaving England and traveling to France in order to introduce Tom Thumb to the King of France. A fierce social rivalry existed between the Queen of England and the King of France. As Barnum expected, an invitation to visit the Queen was not long in coming. • Once when Tom Thumb was robbed, Barnum himself spread the rumor that Tom had been kidnapped and was being held for ransom. The public furor increased interest all over Europe. • Tom Thumb had a delightful sense of humor and impeccable manners. He had a gift for improvisation while on the stage. His specialty was imitating Napoleon Bonaparte, an act that won him world-wide renown. After traveling the world with Barnum, he returned to his hometown of Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he had a home built to scale, with furniture and furnishings constructed in exactly the correct proportions. • When Barnum hired a 32-inch-tall female performer named Lavinia Warren Bump, Tom Thumb instantly fell in love, and the two were married. Their wedding was featured in every newspaper and magazine in the nation. The newlyweds toured the world together, performing in nearly 600 cities around the globe. By the time they returned to Connecticut, they had performed in front of more people than any other person in history – a record they held until the invention of the television. They were also rich beyond their wildest dreams. When Barnum went bankrupt after investing unwisely, it was Tom Thumb’s earning power that put him back on his feet. • When Charles Stratton died of a stroke at the age of 45, he stood 3 feet, four inches tall and weighed just 71 pounds. More than 10,000 mourners attended his funeral, and newspapers around the world carried news of his death and descriptions of the funeral service. OVERCOMING THE ODDS:CHARLES STRATTON

• When Charles Stratton was born in Connecticut in 1838, he weighed a healthy nine pounds, eight ounces. However, his parents soon noted that he wasn’t growing like other children. A malfunctioning pituitary gland slowed his growth, so at age four, he was only 25 inches long. He never grew much beyond that height. Giving Thanks by Steven Bouma-Prediger

Read: Ephesians 5:15-20 Giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (v. 20)

Let’s be honest: it’s not easy to give thanks at all times and for everything. But Paul insists here that unceasing thanks is possible. An attitude of continuous gratitude should characterize the person who understands the Lord’s will (v. 17) and is filled with the Spirit (v. 18).

While we might get the idea of giving thanks at all times, how are we to give thanks for every-thing? For everything? Really? For Grandpa’s dementia and Aunt Susan’s lupus? For your best friend’s cancer and your sister’s divorce? For bad

things happening to good people? As one com-mentator honestly put it: “Even if we may learn how to keep a thankful heart in all circumstances, it is not easy to see how one can be grateful for everything.” This, he continues, “presupposes a deep underlying faith that God can produce good out of even the most unpromising situation.”

Such a faith believes that God is both loving enough and powerful enough to bring good out of evil. But this we know he can do. We know it from the death and resurrection of Christ. The cross signals God’s loving desire to bring good out of evil. And the empty tomb tells us God is able to actually do it!

Prayer: O God, give us faith to trust in you and thus give thanks at all times and for everything.

SkillIt takes time and determination to devolve any skill. Before a schoolteacher can teach, there is much preparation and their focus must be on what they are training for. Anyone who sings must spend lots of time exercising their voice. No great attorney ever reached the height of their success in the courtroom without spending his time and energy to study so he can be the best lawyer he can possibly be. It takes concentration and determination to develop any skill. If you want greatness of God, that’s exactly what you have to do. Give your full concentration and attention to whatever God has for you. Maybe you haven’t done that yet. It’s not too late. You can’t change the past, however you can do something about the now, the future. What God has for you to do, he will help you attain. Paul said in 2nd Tim. 4:7, “I have fought a good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.” If you don’t know what your main calling is, pray, and ask him to show you. In the meanwhile, do all you know to do according to his word, things that please him and keep praying and trusting him for your specific calling. He may be preparing you now for that calling.

A Note From the EditorYou may have missed my editor’s note last week while I fought walking pneumonia with all of my might for two weeks. Wayne, our design and layout expert almost couldn’t accept the fact that the editor’s note would be absent. “We’ve never missed one and lots of people like reading it!” he argued. Brad and I begged to differ, however, as I sat and lay around in a brain fog feeling sure that my writing skills were not up to par.

My husband and mom came to the rescue as they were able to meet up at a half way point off the interstate, at the start of the Thanksgiving break, so our kids could visit their grand-parents for a few days as I attempted recovery. My sweet husband worked double duty holding the home front and business together, singlehandedly. I managed to squeak out a little content for our last edition, but he also pulled my weight on both administrative and editorial duties.

As I lay around in misery for fourteen days I found myself thankful for a number of things. Obviously, good health was on my mind a great deal but so were some more unexpect-ed blessings I often take for granted in life. I missed making our morning pot of coffee, shuffling through file folders, the ability to check email five or six times per day and the con-venience of hopping behind the wheel of my car and be-ing in motion during the day. While my kids were absent I missed messy bedrooms, dirty dishes, excessive amounts of laundry and seeing their toys and projects strewn about the house. I found myself extremely grateful for the very things that often seem cumbersome or annoying and I real-ized that a break from “my normal self” might have been the greatest lesson in thanksgiving I’ve received in quite a while.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week,Audrey Chambers
