Lack of timely and effective intervention has led us to a messy situation from which no one really knows how we are going to extricate ourselves. Lines have been drawn sharply. Rival groups are determined. The war is on. Most of us have been part of a blame game. Blaming the other. Blaming the leaders. Any change for the better can only begin with each one of us individually and collectively owning up our role in the mess, especially the culpable silence of most. ‘To sin by silence when they should protest, makes cowards of men,’ said Abraham Lincoln. How do we become part of the solution? It has to begin with a search for the root questions. Questions of values, priorities, orientations and ultimately commitment. Does our commitment to the Man of Nazareth and Human Rights take priority over all other concerns? Can His justice take precedence over my justice? Can His life really become the criteria for final decisions? May be good to remind ourselves of the quotes: ‘There is no more neutrality in the world. You either have to be part of the solution, or you’re going to be part of the problem.’ ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world’. M.K. George, SJ Kerala Tidings s 2018 October 1

LOYOLA JESUIT HOUSE, SAN FRANCISCO

AsithasbeeninKerala, thescandalousstoriesofclergyhavebeenrockingtheChurchintheUnitedStates.IntheJesuit parishes where I am assisting, the pastors took bold steps to respond to the situation. In St. Ignatiuschurch,FrGregoryBonfiglioaskedtheladycoordinatorof the university campus ministry to give the homily of that Sunday. She expressed the anguish, anger, disappointment, frustration and above all the deeppain that she felt over the reports about the abusiveclergy of the church. All Jesuits, including the Rector, the President of the university and the professorssat in silence listening to her words attentively. The congregation felt that she expressed their sentiments. They felt they were listened to. Although it was not the case in every parish, this spectacular Jesuit approach helped to keep the community of the faithful together. Later, our community wrote a letter to Pope Francisoffering our unconditional support and prayers at this moment of crisis. I too had a chance to sign that letter.
