REVIEW OF THE WEEKEpic Continues EmphasisOn British Disc Product
The importance of the Brit-ish recora to America was un-derscored again last week uponthe return to the United Statesof Leonard S. Levy, head ofEpic Records, who had justcompleted his first visit to Brit-ain. Levy heads the Americanlabel with one of the most ex-tensive roster of British artistsof any in this country.
During his visit, Levy con-ducted conferences regardingfuture plans for his firm's Brit-ish artists with top EMI brass,including L. G. Wood. Artistsinvolved include the DaveClark Five, Cliff Richard, RolfHarris, Andy Stewart, the re-cently acquired Shadows (CliffRichard's own instrumentalgroup) and the newly signedYardbirds.
Noting the influence of theBritish product on this market,Levy said that Cliff Richard'scurrent record, "The MinuteYou're Gone," was issued firstin this country to a rathersparse response. Later, it wasreleased in England, ultimatelybecame number one there, andthereupon began breaking here.
"There is a whole group ofAmerican jockeys," Levy said,"Who make it their business toget British product direct fromEngland and often before it iseven available in the States,and give it heavy play. Thiscan help, as it has with ourCliff Richard single, but some-times it can also have the effectof forcing a company into apremature release of a record,while a past release might stillbe selling well.
"I know too," continuedLevy, "That there are a num-ber of American stations nowwhere the program directorwill let one jockey depart fromthe normal formula program-ming to do a 15 or 30 -minutesegment of records, basedstrictly on British chart hits.You simply can't overestimatethe importance of these Britishcharts and records on theAmerican market."
During his British tour, Levyalso conferred with producersand personal managers of thevarious Epic -affiliated artists,looking to promotion and pub-licity build-ups in the monthsto come, including possiblelater visits to the States.
Epic's Dave Clark Five willarrive in the States June 18 fortheir third American tour. Thegroup will be here for about 30days with concerts in NewYork, Philadelphia, Baltimore,Boston and Chicago all on theagenda.

Murray's VictoryMurray the K again beat his
opposition with his EasterRock and Roll show at theBrooklyn Fox this year. Hegrossed $197,000, an all-timehigh, while the Soupy SalesShow at the New York Para-mount, presented by MorrisLevy grossed barely $100,000.For Murray it was proof againof his tremendous drawingpower, since he did it withouta regular radio show (he hasbeen off the air for almost twomonths.) For the New YorkParamount it was proof of thedrawing power of Soupy Sales,even though he apparently isno match for a hot rock show.
Murray received anotheraward last week when he wasnamed radio -TV consultant forthe School Drop -Out Programof Sargent Shriver's Office ofEconomic Opportunity.
Vince Rides AgainSol Zantz, genial sales man-
ager of Fantasy Records, drop-ped into our offices last weekfor a bit of a philosophical dis-cussion concerning the hit sales(again!) of Vince Guaraldi'salbum "Cast Your Fate To TheWind." The LP, which has nowbeen on the market for fiveyears, has turned into a big -seller all over again, due to thehit single of the same song(written by Guaraldi) bySounds Orchestral on theCameo -Parkway label.
Over the past three monthsVince's album has been doingjust great. In one two weekperiod the firm shipped 42,000copies. At one point the albumwas selling 1800 copies a day.Sol told us that the album isnow (three years after release)at the 180,000 mark, and that itwas sure to go over 200,000,since it is now averaging closeto 4,000 copies a week.
He told us that the album hasnow gone through five changesof cover, which he considerssome sort of a record. It hasset some sort of record forFantasy, since it is beating thesales record of the firm's otheroutstanding catalog seller,Dave Brubeck's "Jazz At Ober-lin." With these facts, and afew more about upcomingproduct with Charlie Mingus,Bola Sete, and newcomer Al-bert Ayler, Sol went on his

Grammy Stars On TVThe upcoming Grammy

Pont Textile Fibers have got-ten together for a "Teen PopConcerts" promotion startingthis August. The show itselfwas previewed two weeks agoduring Du Pont's Market WeekShow.
The back -to -school fashion -musical for teen girls and boysstars Victor artists PeggyMarch, Bennie Thomas and theAstronauts. The promotion willencompass all teen apparel infabrics containing Du Pontfibers, and will be presented ineach of the nation's 30 leadingmarkets by that market's lead-ing department stores. Localdeejays will act as emcees. Pro-motion will be backed by alarge Du Pont ad campaign.
Herman The StarHerman, of the Hermits, will
now star in movies. Dick Clarkhas signed a deal with Her-man's Hermits to star in a mys-tery with music. The script willbe written in England, and willbe filmed in Hollywood, witha starting date set for the thirdweek in September. The groupwill headline a summer unit ofhis "Caravan of Stars," fromAugust 13 to September 6.

Columbia Record sales forthe first quarter of 1965 wereup 13 per cent over the firstquarter of 1964, the companynoted happily last week. Thismade the first quarter the bestin company history. Firm at-tributed the great sales to itsalbums, especially its soundtrack and film score LP's, plusLP's by Barbra Streisand,Andy Williams and the NewChristy Minstrels. The Colum-bia Record Club, now up to1,500,000 members, also con-tributed to the upsurge.

Decca-Coral LP'sTo RCA Record Club
Commencing this month,Decca, Coral and Brunswickalbum product will be madeavailable through the RCARecord Club. In making theannouncement, Decca's presi-dent, Milton R. Rackmil, notedthat this was the first affilia-tion with any record club forDecca, and the agreement hasbeen entered upon on a non-exclusive basis with the RCARecord Club.
Featured in the May releasewill be 36 different albums ofDecca-Coral-Brunswick prod-uct, plus an introductory samp-ler, entitled "Decca Cavalcadeof Stars." The sampler will fea-ture twelve selections by thefollowing artists: Brenda Lee,Pete Fountain, Bert Kaem-pfert, Carmen Cavallaro, GuyLombardo, Leroy Anderson,Red Foley, Ethel Smith, Lor-etta Lynn, Al Jolson, BingCrosby and the Weavers.

New Pickwick LinePickwick/33, a new econ-
omy -priced record line ($2mono; $2.50 stereo) was intro-duced last week by PickwickInternational. The label willincorporate non -current prod-uct assigned exclusively toPickwick by such labels asWarner Brothers, Reprise,ABC -Paramount, Everest andJubilee Records, in addition toCapitol Records. Arrangementsfor the leasing of certain Cap-itol material had been an-nounced previously.
The new arrangements bringPickwick solidly into the pop,classical, mood strings andcountry fields. The countryarea is served by the Hilltopseries, introduced last year,and which has enjoyed sub-stantial sales to date.
Among the artists now beingoffered through the new line-which will have four-color cov-ers, full liner notes and purevinyl pressings-will be suchtop drawer names as RogerMiller, Soupy Sales, Ferranteand Teicher, Pete Fountain,Woody Herman, Buck Owens,Ethel Ennis, Ike and Tina Tur-ner, Bobby Bare, Kai Winding,and the Lettermen.
Pickwick president Cy Les-lie, said that distribution willbe through 32 regular distrbu-tors and 45 co -distributors(record merchandisers) all ofwhom will purchase the prod-uct at the identical price. They mobbed Wayne & Freddie in Syracuse..
MANCUNIANS ARRIVE. Wayne Fontana sat on the planemaking funny shapes with an oversized handkerchief. At almostthe same moment, several hundred miles away, Herman (andthe Hermits) was being mobbed in Louisville, Kentucky. FreddieGarrity, together with the Dreamers, was digging into a steakin a private home in Syracuse.
The three Manchester groups had obviously arrived safely.The biggest hitch in the entire works had been immigration'srefusal to hand out an H.1 visa to Wayne Fontana and the Mind -benders. They came in on an H.2 which they picked up in Liver-pool just an hour before catching the 'plane to New York. Be-cause of these problems they came in a day later than originallyscheduled.
RIOTS IN SYRACUSE. Wayne's secondary visa did nothingto quell the riots on their opening night at the Syracuse WarMemorial, where 5,100 fans turned up in the pouring rain togreet him and Freddie and the Dreamers on their Americandebut.
Freddie and Wayne hadn't worked together for a year. Back-stage greetings were thrown high and loud at the call up of thetwo groups. Freddie, who arrived in New York a day earlierthan Wayne, preceded his opening night with a giant bash of apress reception at El Mio-the Delmonico Hotel discotheque. Thechaos which greeted him at the airport and outside the hotel onhis arrival, geared him a little more towards being able to copewith Syracuse.
Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders hadn't even seen NewYork when they arrived for the date.
OFF AND RUNNING. "We flew into Kennedy, drove to LaGuardia, had a press conference there and wham! up to Syra-cuse," said Wayne in between trying to wolf down some beefpot pie and glaring at the streaks of blue flames emiting from
the third engine of the American Airlines 'plane that was takinghim there. The Mindbenders didn't look too happy with thesituation either. Rhythm guitarist Bob Lang kept yelling some-thing about wanting to get off.

"We were up at the crack of dawn this morning. Had to rushover to Liverpool to get our visas, had an hour to spare to get
back to Manchester and on the plane to New York. With thechange in time, we've been up about 28 hours and doing nothingbut flying and eating. And now we look like we've got enginetrouble...." Everybody else on board screamed him out.
It was pouring cats and dogs in Syracuse when Wayne and his
band of tired musicians arrived at about 8 p.m. Two days earlierit had been snowing.
WAITING FOR FREDDIE. That afternoon, Syracuse had seenanother arrival-that of Freddie and the Dreamers who'd flownin from Chicago. Freddie stepped off his plane to a mass of 1,000fans who'd turned up to cheer.
The groups met at the War Memorial which was swingin' withpeople. Wayne kept lifting the tabs to watch all the kids. Hecouldn't believe the crowds. Then he had to settle on a program.They told him to sing eight songs. He didn't want to do one ofhis biggest British hits, "Um, Urn, Urn, Urn, Um, Urn," becausehe said he thought they wouldn't think he was very original. Theyfinally worked out the material they were going to use.
Freddie came into Wayne's dressing room. Mindbenders andDreamers chatted amongst themselves. Wayne and Freddie dis-cussed immigration problems.
Freddie's manager, Jim O'Farrell, commented, "There shouldbe an American agents' association so everyone could pull to-gether when there are problems like this."
CROWDS GET BIGGER. Outside, in the auditorium, thecrowds were getting bigger and more out of hand. They beganchanting, "We want Freddie . . . We want Wayne." Local policehad cordoned them off from near the front of the stage. Theybroke the rope and screamed some more. Local radio stationdee-jays begged them to behave themselves. They wouldn't.Finally the county sheriff threatened to pull the show if theydidn't keep in check.

ante on an American stage. They have a great sound. Duringone number Wayne wore a funny little cap which made him looklike a good looking edition of Bob Dylan. He closed with "Gameof Love." It's the current number one in Syracuse. During hisact, the cops kept throwing screaming girls out into the rain.They all rebelled later when they blocked up underground en-trances to the garage and threw rocks at the ramp doors.
There was a long wait before Freddie came on. At one timewhispers went round the auditorium that the police had stoppedthe show and he wasn't going to appear. Freddie heard the whis-pers too. But they went on.
HE'S SO FUNNY. One girl out front said, "When the Animalswere here no-one came to see them. But we saw Freddie on tele-vision in "Hullabaloo" and we all wanted to see him some more.He's so funny."
The crowds surged forward some more, and Freddie jumpedinto the orchestra pit. He nearly got murdered. He got back onstage just in time.
Freddie and the Dreamers were still performing while FrankBarsalona was trying to get Wayne out the theatre in time tocatch the plane back to New York. They nearly blew it, butsomeone phoned the airport and said they'd be late. It got evenworse when Freddie and the Dreamers tried to leave. The kidsbroke the ramp windows and one girl threw herself in front ofthe car. Then the police came down on them with hosepipes andthe riot squad was called. Finally, Freddie was able to get outand drive over to Rochester, where he appeared the next night.HERMAN TOO. Hundreds of miles away, 17 year old Herman
(Peter Noone), and his tooth, were also being mobbed.Their opening date was for Gene Kaye in Allentown which
was like forget it! They didn't want to go. Like Wayne, theyarrived in New York and were whipped straight out of the cityand down to Pennsylvania. But they're glad they went. Theywere wined and dined and generally feted. They were also giventhe keys to the city.
The following day in Greensboro, 500 kids turned up at the
airport-during school hours-to meet them. Their concert was asellout even though it was sandwiched between a "Shindig" anda Dick Clark package.
Then on to Louisville, where 900 people waited at the airport,5,000 attended their concert, and 500 caught Herman as he wastrying to get out the theatre by the wrong exit. He got scared.He also got his shirt ripped and says his nerves are still bad fromthe experience.MOBBED IN DALLAS. More rioting was yet to come. In Dal-
las, Texas, 7,000 people attended the Memorial Auditorium-much to the despair of the Dallas police force, who said theyhadn't coped with anything like it since the Beatles. In fact,according to Premier's Ron Sunshine, who accompanied them onthe date, the police accorded the group the same security meas-ures as the Beatles.
Sunshine recalls, "The boys really had a problem in Dallas.They tried to get into one of the local radio stations and 6,000fans blocked the car from all sides, and the entire street. Therewere only 3 police to cope with the crowds who got terribly outof hand. Herman couldn't believe it. Even though he was scared,he was really flipped over the whole thing.
"In the end, we had to give up and drive back to the hotel.The police managed to break a line so we could get the car out."
Everywhere he's been, Herman has done SRO performancesfor each promoter. In Fort Worth the same thing-a sellout of10,000 tickets.
"They generally started rushing the stage when Herman sang"Mrs. Brown," said Ron Sunshine. That's when they got up fromtheir seats. It's his closing number. For the most part, the onlyway to get Herman and his Hermits safely out was for someoneto literally lift their guitars from off their necks and have themin the car before the tabs were pulled . . ."

VOICE WITH A SMILE. Anita Kerris a slim, pretty woman with aroundish face, a ready smile and thesoft traces of Memphis, Tennessee in hervoice. She has attractive silvery hair anda honey -silk singing voice. Her life con-sist. s of doubling between the demandsposed by two small daughters and her job

Anna. who is the queen of the back-voland vocal sound on records, did muchas dere:op this fine art. It has frequentlybe .111 in knowledgeable Nashvilleck-thm that her voice, along with these of
her colleagues in the Anita Kerr Quartet,may be heard on as many as half of therecords coming out of the 16th and 17thAvenue South studios there.
"We have all been raised in a pop ratherthan a country tradition," she continued,"but it doesn't matter who we work with.We try to make pleasing, pretty soundsand stay away from anything that gets toojazzy. We're terribly happy with our ownnew album, an RCA Victor which I thinkis the kind we've all wanted to do andnever really had a chance to do before.(We work for all labels-with no billing-but for Victor as the Anita Kerr singers.)
"We've done lots of country things andsome rock and roll and we finally gotChet Atkins to let us do a real, lush moodalbum with strings. We recorded it onthe West Coast with Marty Paich. It maynot sell two copies, but we love it.
A NEW APPROACH. "You'd be sur-prised but it's really one of the few timeswe've had a chance to take a new ap-proach with our recording. When we wantto try something really far out, we'll tryit on a live performance during the fewtimes we get involved in that, and thenif it goes over, and we can convince ourrecording people to let us do it, we mayuse the idea on a record.
"Mostly we're involved with oohs andaahs. And that's really what most of itamounts to. Although even backgroundstyles change. Sometimes Chet (Chet At-kins, Victor Nashville chief) will ask us tothink up something different and it's up tous to come up with a sound. More likely,he'll ask us to give him a Four Seasonskind of sound. Well, that isn't too hard be-cause I've heard them. Sometimes I won'thave the faintest idea of who he meanswhen he throws a name at us. But moreoften than not, they'll play us a record ofthe group they want us to try to soundlike and we work from there."
Anita literally will work from there in putting down a complete arrangementvirtually on the spot. One Nashville sing-er said recently that "she's amazing inthe way she can put down a whole ar-rangement, not part by part, but practical-ly all the parts at once, both vocal andfor the instruments. She must hear thewhole thing in her head."
NOT BY ACCIDENT. This hasn't comeby accident because Anita started playingpiano at four, she actively studied classi-cal piano for a decade "until my teachermoved away and I couldn't find anotherone I liked nearly as well. I was 14 bythen and began fooling around with ourchurch choir and doing arrangements forthem. I had a girl's quartet in school too
and we tried singing like the King Sisters."I didn't go to college because I got
married when I was 19. That was inMemphis. He was a disc jockey and gotan offer from WKDA in Nashville. So wemoved and he started playing jazz records,He liked classical but he couldn't playthat on the show. Eight months after wegot there, I fell into a job at WSM. JackStapp, who was the program directorthen, heard about my choir and choralexperience and hired me to do the ar-ranging for an eight -voice choral groupon the 'Sunday Down South' show.
"That's how it started for me in Nash-ville. In a few months Paul Cohen ofDecca Records heard us and hired us forbackgrounds with Red Foley. The firstrecord we made with him was 'Lady ofFatima.' Paul began using us quite a lot,first as eight voices, then six, and finallymostly four and that's how we've beensince 1956.
DECCA TO VICTOR. "I was with Deccauntil 1959. I had begun working with theVictor people in arranging, and producingwork, and finally Decca was kind enoughto release me so I could get more intoproducing and arranging at Victor, aswell as singing. I'm happy the way it hasworked out.
"I don't really have as much time asI'd sometimes like to have even by stay-ing here in Nashville and doing the doowahs all day long. I'd like to be able tolisten to the King Sisters and the SwingleSingers and even the Beatles. I thinkthey've done so much for our business.They really have a sound that sounds asthough it wasn't just thrown together. Iused to love the Pied Pipers too, and theHi-Lo's . . . what they do is technicallyjust amazing.
NOT ENOUGH TIME. "But time is aproblem. There isn't enough. I used to beable to come home and take a nap oc-casionally. Now when I'm home, my littlegirls - they're six and three - keep mebusy. And recording keeps me runningan awful lot of the time.
"It's enough for anybody really. I'venever had any urge to be a big timer orget to be a big star. And I think we allfeel that way. Arthur Godfrey had us onthe 'Tonight' show for a week with himonce and told us he wanted us to move toNew York to be regulars on his own show.He said we could pick up a lot of jinglework besides.
"Well we have all that right here inNashville. We can raise our kids here too.And what more is there than that? Weall like it just the way it is."

Then of course, there'll bethose Flintstones, who'll offer "FlipFables of Goldi Rocks and the ThreeBearosauruses," as well as "Hanseland Gretel." They'll offer song, too,
including "Beowulf, the Big BadWolf."
Other albums in the initial releasewill be "Pixie and Dixie with Mr.Jinks Tell the Story of Cinderella,""Huckleberry Hound Tells Stories ofUncle Remus," "Magilla Gorilla TellsOgee Story of Alice in Wonderland,"and "Monster Shindig," featuringSuper -Snooper and Blabber -Mouse.
Singles will be released from thealbums, and Hanna -Barbera has al-ready arranged for many Top 40 sta-tions to use recorded punch lines andsound effects from the series.

and Joe Barbera, cartoon mastersboth, who have worked together forthe past 25 years (first at MGM,where they created the seven -timesOscar winning cartoon short, "Tomand Jerry") have had one of the mostillustrious careers this past sevenyears, since they went independent.Today, the company, has an enormousproduction staff of 250 artists, techni-cians, writers and directors in thelargest animation studios operating inthe world.
With the decision to produce re-cordings (Hanna -Barbera charactersare already represented by over 2500
consumer products ranging from win-dow shades to bubble bath whichbrought in some $120 million in 1964)the company hired industry veteranDon Bohanan, formerly of LibertyRecords, to organize the firm and pro-duce product. As vice president ofHanna -Barbera Records, Bohanan willsoon travel to England and otherpoints, setting up foreign distribution.
PICTURES TOO. Just one year ago,H -B went into the feature-length mo-tion pictures market with "Hey There,It's Yogi Bear." They have just ac-quired film rights to the Sid Fleisch-man novel, "Mr. Mysterious," which
will be their first live -action produc-tion. H -B is also engaged in producingcommercials as well as industrialfilms-animated and live action.
Hanna-Barbera's first televisionshow was "Ruff and Reddy,"-a fif-teen -minute seg which ran for threeseasons (still being syndicated). Inquick order, they followed with serieslike "Huckleberry Hound," "QuickDraw McGraw," the "Flintstones,""Top Cat," "The Jetsons," "ToucheTurtle," "Lippy the Lion," "WallyGator," "Magilla Gorilla," "Peter Po-tamus" and "Johnny Quest."

Erick FriedmanJascha Heifetz' prize pupil is now a seasoned concert veteran

RECORDED WITH HEIFETZ. When anartist of the stature of Jascha Heifetzchooses to record with another violinist,you can rest assured he is pretty satisfiedthat the other fellow is his equal. In 1961,Heifetz did just that for RCA Victor Rec-ords, and his chosen partner in the Bach"Concerto for Two Violins," was his 21year old prize pupil, Erick Friedman. Thisrecording was the ultimate endorsementof what many critics had already ex-pressed-Erick Friedman was a prematuremaster of his instrument.
Since then, the Jersey -born musician hasbecome a seasoned veteran of the interna-tional concert platform. In town recently,following a highly successful series of per-formances in Europe, Friedman joined usfor lunch at the Russian Tea Room, adja-cent to Carnegie Hall. At 25, Friedmanlooks more like Rock Hudson than Paga-nini, and is delightfully candid about him-self, music and musicians.

A MUSICIAN'S LOT. "A musician's lifeis a pretty frustrating one, actually. Somuch is dependent on things other thanmusic in getting a career in orbit-it maybe as simple a thing as being in the rightplace at the right time-availability, reper-toire, circumstances. I've often seen ayoung, talented, virtuoso pass what shouldbe the acid test-a brilliant debut withloads of critical acclaim. Then you neverhear of them again."
This wasn't the case with Friedman,however. When he made his Carnegie Halldebut at the age of seventeen, he had al-ready had the benefit of valuable perform-ing experience behind him. At fourteen, hehad won the Music Education League Au-ditions, which rewarded him with an ap-pearance with the Little Orchestra Societyin Town Hall, where he played Lalo's"Symphonie Espagnole." Critics on bothoccasions recognized him as a musicianwith the "assurance of a veteran . . . thepersuasive power of a mature interpreter. . . and the sort of vivacity that does notdisappear with age."
DISAPPOINTED BY CONDUCTORS.Conductors are high on Friedman's list ofdisappointments. "Conductors are the realprima donnas in our business. Many ofthem are downright incompetent. I couldname a few who would never last if itweren't that they'd chosen just the rightconcertmaster. One doesn't expect muchrehearsal with an orchestra-just a talk -through and then a run-through. In pre-paring for a soloist, many conductors listento his recordings to get an idea of his in-terpretation where they are available. Inmy case, I know of conductors who havelistened to Heifetz' recordings-they as-sume since I'm his pupil I'll play it hisway. I can tell from the tempo they openwith."
Who gets the final word on interpreta-tion, the conductor or the soloist? "Well,it's obviously give and take." Well, then,what did he think of the highly publicizedincident when Leonard Bernstein prefaceda performance of a Brahms Piano Con-certo with Glenn Gould, explaining theperformance the audience would hear wasnot his interpretation, but Gould's? "Well,frankly I think it was planned. It couldn'thave happened otherwise. I mean, look,both Gould and Bernstein are masters atdrawing public attention-not that there'sanything wrong with that. And, the factthat they're both fine musicians doesn'thurt matters."
CHAMBER MUSIC FAN. One of Fried -man's admitted passions is chamber music.Not unlike a jazz musician, he will fre-quently join a few orchestra members af-ter a concert and play chamber music "allnight long. I love to sight read, and it'salways come easy to me. In fact, while I'mnot what you'd call a pianist, I do play, andI was surprised to find that I can sight readat the piano better than most pianists."
He also has a wide range of musical ap-preciation. At luncheon he was extollingthe virtues of two of his current pop fa-vorites, Petula Clark's "Downtown," andSandi Shaw's "Girl Don't Come."
Friedman now has six albums out onRCA Victor. His latest is a deluxe pack-aged, 2 -LP, set of Bach's Sonatas for Vio-lin and Harpsichord with Bruce Prince -Joseph. This summer he'll be in London torecord the Mendelssohn and Tchaikovskyconcertos with the London Symphony Or-chestra.
When we jokingly suggested that in hisfree time he could pick up some extra"bread," working a pop recording date,since he was so up on that scene, he en-thusiastically responded: "Hey, do youthink you could arrange it. I mean really."We promised to pass the word along.

As announced, tickets forthe anticipated VladimirHorowitz recital at CarnegieHall went on sale at thehall's box office on Monday(26) at 10 a.m. Two hourslater the Sold Out sign wasposted and several hundreddisappointed persons foundthat they'd waited in therain for nothing. There hasbeen, however, a good dealof curiosity and conflict overjust where all the ticketswent.
In the New York TimesF. Shepard reported: "Tick-ets were limited to four toa person, although origin-ally it was planned to leteach customer buy up toeight. By the time the boxoffice closed, only 300 buyers had been served, accordingto an unofficial count, basedon a waiting list drawn upby music students to keepout line -crashers. This indi-cated a sale of at most 1,200
tickets for the 2,760 seathall.
"According to a CarnegieHall spokesman, however,2,000 tickets were placed onsale at the box office andthese were sold to more than300 people in line. He saidthere had been an unusuallyheavy demand by the pressand from abroad."
Regarding the last state-ment, we were informed bythe office handling press re-lations for the event thatwhile the "demand" forpress tickets was, indeedheavy, compliance with saiddemand was extremelysmall. Complementary tick-ets were reportedly grantedto only the New York dail-ies, Time Magazine, News-week, UPI and AP. Add 'emup, and what can you get?
But about those faithfulassembled, the Times re-ported: "Those long -haulwaiters who had assembledin the orderly queue from11:30 a.m. Sunday until 7:30a.m. yesterday (Monday),
got tickets. . . . As the firstpeople on line emerged withtheir tickets, they reportedthat orchestra tickets for thefirst tier and for most of thecenter and the left, or key-board side, could not be pur-chased. . . . Many peoplewho had spent hours wait-ing were irate because theyhad not been told that theentire house was not up forsale at the box office."
Mrs. Horowitz (WandaToscanini) was reported tohave only two dozen ticketsherself, and Steinway andSons were said to have amere 20. Walter Toscanini,Mrs. Horowitz' brother, hadbeen invited to join his sis-ter at the concert, but ac-cording to the Times "hewanted more tickets andstood in line since about 7a.m."
So the big question, stillunanswered is this: Wheredid all the tickets go, whowere the privileged whowere able to purchase somany prime location seatsprior to the opening of thebox office?

I/ the 13 .5. ImmigrationDepartment doesn't stopmaking an idiot of itselfover granting visas to Eng-lish pop singers, the Britishpublic will very likely stageits own version of the Bos-ton Tea Party and dump allU.S. discs into the Channel.
Personally we wouldn'tblame them. The snide, un-knowing criticisms of youngpop record artists - bothBritish and U.S.-by con-sumer newspapers and so-called "good music" deejaysis exasperating enough. TheImmigration Department inthe role of "critic" is not tobe believed.
Their musical prejudice isof Selma -sized proportions-not against British artists asa threat to American per-formers, but against rockand roll per se.
A case in point is one P. A.
Esperdy, New York DistrictDirector of the Immigrationand Naturalization Service,who was interviewed by theNew York Times after hisrecent refusal to grantworking visas to some ofEngland's top -selling recordartists.
Not A FanUtilizing dated slang (circa
the Big Band Era of the thir-ties) Esperdy plainly re-vealed his abysmal ignor-ance of today's young music.The refusals (to grant visas)he said, in part, resulted"from the large flow of theserock 'n' rollers or whateveryou call them. You know thekind of aggregations I'mtalking about."
Continuing in the samecontemptuous vein, Esperdysaid he didn't think popsingers were "real top-flight,
high class acts. Unfortunate-ly we've been letting someof these jive types in underthis category," added "hep-cat" Esperdy, "Lately we'vebeen weeding out those wedon't feel are of distin-guished merit and ability."Discounting teenager opin-ion as unacceptable "experttestimony," Esperdy con-cluded "We feel they're (theyoung pop singers) just fly-by-night acts, a passing tad."
The main source of Mr.Esperdy's expertise is be-lieved to be Irving Lewis,Assistant Executive Secre-tary of the American Feder-ation of Radio Artists,which, according to the N.Y.Times, usually provides ap-praisals of pop singing tal-ent for U.S. Immigration of-ficials.
Mr. Lewis told the LondonDaily Express that he has"no prejudice against Brit-ish performers." And we be-lieve him. His prejudice isplainly centered on rockand roll, as he clearly re-vealed when he told the Ex-press "There are others here-American performers-who
can do the same if you wantto listen to that kind ofthing." Here's the key-"thatkind of thing." He obviouslyconsiders rock and roll lit-erally too distasteful forwords.
We certainly don't recom-mend that all rock and rolland/ or young British poprecord artists should begranted working visas, butwe do believe they deservea knowledgeable appraisalof their talent and stature.
The Immigration Depart-ment could solve all of itsproblems if they would justdelegate Mr. Lewis and Mr.
Esperdy to the GracieFields - Mantovani category.and appoint a special com-mittee to judge Britain'syoung pop music talent.
The committee could in-clude a music trade papereditor, disc -wise producersand emcees such as DickClark, Ed Sullivan, GarySmith, Lloyd Thaxton, andrecording executives likePhil Spector, Jerry Wexlerand others. But please,please, not the old fashionedteam of Lewis and Esperdy.

Man of many talents:Teddy Randazzo
As a producer, arranger, composer, publisher andperformer, he has carved out a spectacular career
ONCE A CHUCKLE. In themid -1950's a group named theThree Chuckles had a smashhit called "Runaround," on Vic_tor's subsidiary Label "X." Thesubsidiary label has long sincefaded away, and the Chucklesare no more. But a member ofthat group today stands as oneof the top producer -arranger-writers in the business, and heis still a powerful record andin -person performer. His nameis Teddy Randazzo.
Randazzo's success as a pro-ducer -arranger over the pasttwo years has been so out-standing that within the tradethey talk about "the TeddyRandazzo sound." He broughtLittle Anthony and the Imperi-als back to the top of the rec-ord heap with hits like "Goin'Out Of My Head," "I'm On TheOutside Lookin' In," and "HurtSo Bad." He produced the cur-rent smash by the Royalettescalled "Poor Boy," on MGM,and he has what looks like an-other with new young singerLinda Carr, called "BabyYou're Putting Me On," on theDCP label.
To cap it all Teddy not onlyproduced and arranged theserecords but he also wrote thesongs. (His songs are publishedby Don Costa's South MountainMusic, and he has helped makeit a very hot publishing firm,according to General profes-sional manager Stan Catron.)
ELECTRIC PERFORMER.Producing, arranging, writingand finding talent are only onepart of Teddy Randazzo's ca-reer. He also has a career asan artist, a career that is justas exciting to him as his roleas a producer.
From the time he was withthe Chuckles (where he startedwhen he was only 15) Teddyhas been known as an electricperformer. Even though overthe years he only had occa-sional record hits ("Little Sere-nade," "Way Of A Clown,""Big Wide World"), his looks,18
warm &meaner and personal-ity made him a favorite withscores of pop music fans, es-pecially the girls. When he wasstill at Victor the girls at theNew York offices had their ownprivate fan club for him.
It was this genuine appealthat made him a star in theearly rock and roll movies. Hestarred in four of them, allsuccessful, including "Mr. Rockand Roll," with the late AlanFreed, "Rock, Rock, Rock," "AGirl Can't Help It," and "Hey,Let's Twist."
RELUCTANT PRODUCER.Teddy Randazzo really neverwanted to be anything elsethan a performer. A few weeksago, in the busy, bustling, hel-ter-skelter suite of offices thathe shares with Don Costa, hetold us "I always resisted pro-ducing records. I only wantedto be a performer. I would dooccasional dates from time totime. but only reluctantly.
"One day, back in 1963, Lit-tle Anthony came to me andasked me if I would producehis dates. He knew me from allof the rock and roll shows Ihad been on with him. I did hisfirst date, "On The OutsideLooking In," and it became ahit. Then I did his second date."Going Out Of My Head," andit too became a smash.
"After that I got 40 millioncalls from artists, record com-panies, managers, and all, ask-ing me to produce dates. Atthat point I decided to stay inNew York and produce."
IN GREAT DEMAND. Sincethen Teddy has not only pro-duced all of the Anthony discs,but he has handled dates for avariety of labels. He workssteadily as a producer for DCP,Don Costa's swinging label,has just worked out a produc-tion deal with MGM Records,and has recently recorded RitaPavone for RCA Victor, TimiYuro for Mercury, and GinnyArne11 for MGM.
Teddy is rather modest about
his success as a producer. "Younever can tell in this business,"he told us. "One day you're hotand the next day you're cold.When you're hot everyonewants you-get cold and theyforget about you. What hasbeen helpful to me is that Ihave a basic knowledge of rockand roll and a good knowledgeof the classics, so I'm able todo all kinds of dates."
He finds it difficult to explainthe so-called "Teddy RandazzoSound" or style.
EXPLAINING A STYLE."How can you explain a style?"he asked us. "It's somethingyou were born with perhaps. . . something that grows fromyour experience . . . what youlearn in your own career . . .who you associate with. Youtry to nourish it and cultivateit until it's your own.
"I've always been a big fanof opera. I like things that havebig melodies, with the melodyplaying along with or behindthe singer. I guess that's be-cause Puccini is my favoritecomposer."
Probably when people referto the Randazzo style they aretalking about the songs hewrites, and the arrangementshe uses with them.
"I find that in writing songs,most composers write a verseand chorus, or a chorus, releaseand chorus. But no one has saidthat you have to write a songthat way. I write three or fourdifferent parts into every song.I may write one thing for eightbars, something else for eight,and then something entirelydifferent for another eight."
"There are so many creativepeople in our business that noone has to copy anyone. Every-one should have their own bag.So much can happen in a pieceof music that I'm disappointedwhen I see people get lazy andstay in the same old groove.As for me, I love a good strongmelody, and I try to get it onevery song I write."
DISLIKES TOP 30. One ofthe things that bothers Teddyis the top 30 format used by somany radio stations. "Toomany stations live by the Top30 format. They hate to tryanything new, all they wantare the hits. They should haveprograms featuring new artists,and new songs.
"I think one of the reasonsthat the kids are listening toR&B stations is because theyare willing to play a variety ofrecords, even if they are outof the usual groove. The suc-cess of the Tamla-Motown rec-ords is due to the R&B jock-eys, not the pop jockeys.
"One day," Teddy continued,"It'll all change-just like itchanged to rock and roll whenAlan Freed came along. Oneday a new guy will come alongand play different records, andthe whole market will swtich."
Teddy attributes his success-ful songwriting career to DaveDreyer (veteran writer of suchhits as "Back In Your OwnBackyard" and Ceceila"), whoput him with Brook Bentonback in the late 1950's. "WithBrook I wrote a lot of hit songs,including "Hurtin Inside," and"If Only I Had Known," saidTeddy.
FAVORITE IN VEGAS.What about Teddy Randazzothe performer? Well this yearhe will do about 20 weeks ofpersonal appearances. Many ofthem will be at the Thunder-bird in Las Vegas, where hehas become a favorite.
He's a favorite overseas too.Last month he made his secondtrip to Italy in less than a year,to appear on TV shows, and dosome recording.
Successful producer, com-poser, artist, and arranger,Teddy Randazzo carries aschedule that would fracture alesser man. For Teddy it giveshim an outlet for his tremen-dous talents and results in hitsand hits and hits.

You are a record dealerwith the record dealer'sheadaches, including big in-ventory, steadily increasingoverhead, space problems,back orders, and so forthand so forth.
On top of everything else,youre expected to knowwho the hot soprano is thisseason, what the big soundalbums are, and what thehit Broadway shows albumwill be. And you would liketo sell a little jazz, too.
Usually you find that ifyou stock a few pieces ofsome of the jazz from themajor labels, you move a lit-tle and you end up eitherkeeping the rest forever ormarking them down orsending them back and thenhaving three calls in oneweek for a title.
What can you do to brushup on who is what in jazz?Well, to find out whats sell-ing, all you have to do islook at the charts in MusicBusiness and the other tradepapers. But that doesn't tellyou what to stock and howto promote what you havein stock.
Required reading, rightoff the bat, is* Down Beat.It's the only jazz fan maga-zine in the country. Youshould subscribe to it be-cause you'll receive it by amail a few days before itgoes on sale at the news-stands, and you may be ableto make a little promotionalhay in those few days.
Why Down Beat? Well,it's the only game in town.That alone should be reasonenough. But also, it carries
record reviews with ratingsthat are exploitable. It alsocarries hard news aboutforthcoming albums, and-most important-it carriesfeatures about the currentfavorites in the field.Whether these players arethe actual heroes or the dar-lings of the critics, they arethe jazz musicians beingtalked about, being listenedto, and-in many, many in-stances-being bought onrecords.

with Down Beat and its rec-ord reviews: You can fea-ture the five-star rated al-bums. These are the onesthat Down Beat readersgravitate to. er -writer from Bucks County,Pennsylvania, who is on theMercury label. He is in thefolk-rock groove, and his songsand his singing style are drawnfrom rich sources of Americanfolk music, country, folk, andblues. His first album on Mer-cury, called "Young Blood,"issued about a month ago, isgetting good acceptance.
Young started singing whenhe was still in high school andsang at local functions at clubsin the Philadelphia -BucksCounty area. He decided totry his luck as a professionalsinger about a year ago.
He began to build up a rep-utation playing coffee clubslike the Cellar Door in SanFrancisco, the Gaslight, theBitter End in New York, andthe Purple Onion in Toronto.Bobby Darin heard him, flippedand signed him to a songwritercontract with his T.M. Musicfirm, and to a record produc-tion contract.
Darin's company producedhis first album, "Jesse ColinYoung," and had it released onthe Capitol label. It was heardby Irving Green President ofMercury Records, who liked itso much that he worked out ato have the singer's contractdeal with Bobby Darin's firmtransferred to Mercury. T.M.Music produced his new Mer-cury LP.

Scott, himself a ballad sing-er, originally wanted to getinto the record business, onlyto find himself at the end ofa telephone rather than a mic-rophone. But recently Vee-JayPresident Randy Wood heardof his employee's vocal ambi-tions and gave him an audition.
Wood was so impressed hepromptly scheduled a record-ing session under the super-vision of Lee Young, with theinstrumental backing of a 22 -piece orchestra, arranged andconducted by Ernie Freeman.

I can't understand yourraves on "Shindig," and "Hul-labaloo." Yes, my wife and Iwill turn them on and thenfive minutes later we tunethem out. We can't stand whatwe hear and see.
Being a professional musi-cian for 45 years and one whoremembers the Black Bottom,the Turkey Trot, the CakeWalk, and the Charleston, allI can say is we played thistype of music sparingly. TheFox Trot, One Step and Waltzwere the standards. There area lot of big names, nationallyknown, that don't play or singthis type of music and todayI heard Arthur Godfrey sayhe couldn't go for this type ofmusic, using discords, or threechords, and I agree with hima 100 per cent.
How you can be so one sidedin your view I can't under-stand. Surely you know thereare two sides to every story.I just get aggravated when Iread some of the one sidedarticles that you write andalso some other articles inyour magazine. I guess thismagazine is not for me. Iagree you might get ravesfrom teenagers now startingat the eight year age, and
what do they really knowabout music? I believe whatI've written is logical, at leastto the adult mind.
