NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I don’t know if you noticed but there are buds on the trees. The spring plants are starting to sprout. Can’t wait to see some colorful plants in the neighborhood.

I would like to take this time to thank all the veterans who served our country. Thank you and your families who sacrificed a lot in order to make our country safe. If you have an American Flag, this month would be a good time to make sure it’s out. Let’s remember what the month of May is about, Our Veterans!

If you have anything that you would like to see in the Breeze Way, just send it my way and I will be happy to include it in the next issue. Please remember someone has to give me the information in order for it to be in the Breeze Way.

Wishing all you mom’s a Happy Mother’s Day. Have a wonderful day!

Debbie Caruso

Support EMS Week

May 19-25, is the 45th annual National EMS Week. In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation's communities. EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line." EMS Week is the perfect time to recognize EMS and all that its practitioners do for our nation.

Our residents have established a connection with our township’s volunteer unit. Lacey’s crew is led by Ray Benedetti who began his service in 1997 and has been the Captain of this well-trained troupe for four years. These dedicated men and women have an immense respect for our police and fire department and that esteem is reciprocated; they work in accord for the betterment of our township. They request diverse forms of support. During the past year we have donated food and funds to the squad on various occasions. They will gladly accept any leftovers you may have after cooking a large meal or you can pick up a ShopRite card to purchase the supplies needed for the building. If you have been considering the idea of “paying it back”, perhaps May is the month to begin demonstrating your gratitude.

What do you do to alleviate stress?

Pete Chletsos: "Music calms me down. Especially, 70's folk rock . . . give me some Mitchell, Taylor, Drake, Van Morrison, CSN&Y and others."

Pat Thomas: “Many years ago I started posting notes around the house that contained a word such as, happy, peaceful, joyful, etc. I also found a stone etched with the word calm. When I recall these words it releases my stressand then I smile.”

Paul Onori: “Since I’m retired I usually don’t have much stress. As a normal routine, I work out 4 days a week at a gym; this helps to alleviate any stress I may have.”

Beth Spadaccini: “I pray because if there is something I can’t handle I believe that I should offer it up to the Lord.”

Kevin Croissant: “When I have stress I just take my wife Mary out for drinks and when I get home I feel just fine.”

Nancy Duggan: “I walk through the community at least a mile and a half every day with my dog Cuddles. It is relaxing to take notice of the new homes being built, watching the seasons change and interacting with fellow residents.”

Civic Affairs Group

As part of our on-going effort to better our community, the Concerned Citizens of Lacey Coalition (CCLC) has organized our tasks into multiple subcommittees. These functional subcommittees will concentrate on component parts of the CCLC’s mission. The subcommittees are as follows:1. Oyster Creek – The financial, environmental, quality

of life and safety impact of the decommissioning of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant

2. Town Schools – The funding of the Lacey Township Schools, particularly in light of the anticipated $5 million reduction of school district aid by Governor Murphy

3. Taxes – The analysis of the current assessed value of the homes and land in Sea Breeze and the subsequent tax bills

4. Town Issues – Support of the Township Police Force; analysis of the workings of the Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA)

5. Political Outreach – Contacting local, county, state and federal politicians to gain support for various causes impacting our community

We are now in the process of having the members select the subcommittee where they can each make the greatest contribution. As we make these issues that concern us more understandable, we hope that more of our neighbors will join us to protect our quality of life. For more information please contact Ron Martyn at 201-388-9868.

Memorial Day

In May 1868, General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Union veterans’ issued a decree that May 30th should become a nationwide day of commemoration for the soldiers killed in the recently ended Civil War. When the United States found itself involved in World War I the holiday evolved to venerate American military personnel who died in all wars. For decades, the first Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, was observed on May 30; many of our residents can remember that tradition. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and declared it a federal holiday; the change went into effect in 1971. The most solemn event on this day is when our president or his designee lays a wreath to mark the national observance at Arlington National Cemetery. For more than 60 years America's fallen heroes have been honored by placing American flags at gravesites for service members buried at both Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery just prior to the Memorial Day weekend. Cities and towns hold local parades incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Americans also observe the day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. In more modern times it has become the unofficial start of summer and is ushered in with barbeques, beach visits and sales.

Here at Sea Breeze it is the weekend that we open our pool. However you spend the day, please remember to give thanks for all of the people who gave their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom of our great country. This year it will be celebrated on Monday, May 27th.

A BIT OF GOLF TALK

Is it a little scary thinking about the chance you might actually play in a foursome (or twosome) in which one or two of the players is a stickler for the “new rules?” Embarrassed they may, in fact, discover you really don’t know any of “new rules” they have taken the time to learn for themselves. Ok, I know, I know — you just want to play, and to h!&* with the rest!RULE: It is no longer true that you may lay a club down on the ground to align your feet prior to making a stroke as long as you remove the club before making the stroke.

Now if you happen to forget, and do just that, it is definitely a general penalty (two strokes in stroke play/loss of hole in match play) even if the club is picked up before making the stroke. (R10.2b (3)

Hey, you never know when you might be in a stroke play or match play tournament. You may receive an invitation from a local charity, business, Chamber of Commerce’s, etc. I’ll feel good knowing you’ll be more than ready to play, all because you know the “new.”RULE: Don’t expect free relief for an embedded ball in the general area if neither the reference point nor any part of the associated relief area in which you would drop is in the general area.

This is a rare circumstance when the new 2019’s relief areas hurt you rather than help you. In 2018 if the embedded ball Local Rule was in force, you’d be dropping “as near as possible” to the original spot and no closer to the hole, but could have dropped on either side of the embedded location (instead of in a relief area behind it) and would have had no problem. (R16.3b)

Some new rules facts sanctioned by the U.S.G.A. are taken from the internet and in part, a new rules book written by Howard J. Meditz who is a referee and rules committeeman for the U.S.G.A. The rest is purely me.

Pam Onori

Many people in the United States refer to Cinco de Mayo as Mexico’s Independence Day and equate the celebrations to how Americans mark the Fourth of July, but that is inaccurate. Mexico’s true independence holiday on September 16 celebrates Mexico’s independence from Spain.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the date of the Mexican army's 1862 victory over Napoleon III’s France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. In Mexico, the day is a major holiday only in Puebla, where parades, speeches and battle reenactments are held.

Mexicans residing in California in the 1860s first commemorated the Battle of Puebla as a way to represent two things: A victory against imperialist invaders of Mexico, but also a triumph for the union and the anti-slavery cause in the U.S. civil war since France supported the Confederacy.

The day became increasingly popular in the U.S. over the 20th century as a way for Mexican Americans to show pride in their heritage and to express support for the Chicano Movement.

Some are surprised to learn that the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the western hemisphere is, by far, in Los Angeles, not Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo is an occasion to remember that holidays and commemorations, like other expressions of historical memory, are highly political and always susceptible to reinterpretation. Critics observed that enthusiasm for the holiday celebration did not take off with a broader demographic until it was explicitly linked with the promotion of Mexican alcoholic beverages and that many U.S. festivities tended to both perpetuate negative stereotypes of Mexicans and promote excessive drinking. Ole’.

Sports TalkIt is now officially spring and nice weather is here,

hopefully for good. The Final Four is over, the baseball season is well underway and the NFL has held its draft. A major golfing event has taken place, no not the start of golf at Cedar Creek and the return of the SBGA but the Masters at Augusta National golf course in Georgia, in April.

The Masters for most casual golf lovers signals the start of the golf season and many enjoyable playing and viewing moments. The Masters is the first of the four Major Tournaments on the professional golf tour. It is played annually in April every year, at Augusta National in Georgia. The next Major has changed positions on the tour as the PGA has moved from August to May in 2019 and is being held at the Bethpage Black course on Long Island from May 16 through May 19. If anyone is able to go please let me know and you can review your experience in one of our future articles.

The third Major, the U.S. Open, moves across the

country to beautiful Pebble Beach California and its ocean-side course with amazing scenery June 13 to 16th. This tournament like the Masters looks great on television. The final Major, the Open (previously the British Open) moves across the pond, as they say, to the Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland in July. This is only the second time that the Open has been played outside Scotland or England. I highly recommend that you watch this tournament on television and pay attention to the golf course. The Open is always played on a coastal links golf course. The terrain is open without any trees and will generally feature an undulating naturally shaped golf course. Its location brings into play weather and wind which vary day to day and hour to hour. Finally, it puts a premium on being in the fairway because the rough is extremely rough. If you want to play on the golf course like this try Ballyowen Golf Club in Sussex County, NJ. It will be a great experience.

Every weekend, golf will be on TV until late fall so there’s plenty to watch. However, I suggest you dust off your clubs and get out on a local course, enjoy the weather and the challenge and have fun. Hit them straight.

Last month’s trivia answer: UCLA centers on the 10 Wooden championship teams: Lou Alcindor three times, Bill Walton three times, Steve Patterson twice, Keith Erickson twice (his teams played without a true center).

This month’s trivia questions will stay with golf : First American born player to win at the British Open. What is the Triple Crown in golf and who has won one? How are the holes at the masters named?

May I ?

In 1964 Ruby & the Romantics recorded what would become one of my favorite songs, Young and In Love. The opening line is, “Spring’s in the air…” and when springtime arrives I find myself singing it around the house. I was recently recalling how I enjoyed spring as a young girl in the late 1950’s & early 60’s. I lived on a dirt path in Staten Island for nine years because that’s how long it took NYC to pave our road; the avenue was our playground. We played May I, Kick Ball, Punch Ball, I Declare War, Hide & Seek, Truth or Consequence, Hop Scotch, Stoop Ball, Hit the Stick and more. I guess my neighborhood friends and I were more progressive than we knew because all of our street games included both sexes. We rushed home from school, changed our clothes and ran out as fast as possible. We played until we were called in for dinner; I can still hear my father’s distinct whistle indicating the pasta was on the table. My mom’s friend Faith, rang a cow bell for her boys, and Mrs. Bleimann quietly articulating, “Kenneth Mark, time to come in”. During May and June we remained in after supper because we had to do our homework, but when school was out in late June, so were we, until late in the evening. When it was dark, we picked punks from the swamp and lit them to keep the mosquitoes away and had a contest to see who collected the most fireflies in our glass jars. No adults were included in any of our activities; we knew the rules to each game and abided by them. Yes, we watched TV, but that was for a rainy day. In my reminiscing, I have just taken one Giant Step backwards and I was allowed to because I did ask, “May I”.

Pickleball Season Update

Men only play is Wednesdays and Ladies’ only play on Fridays BOTH from 8 am-12 pm. (Look for emails for later start times pending the weather and temperature). Great News! Our pickleball numbers have grown resulting in additional playing times as follows:

Mondays from 8 am -10 am men play and ladies who would like to join for some competitive mixed play are welcome. Then 10 am-12 pm ladies play and men are welcome to join them.

Tuesdays from 8 am -10 am ladies play and men are welcome to join. Then 10 am -12 pm men play and ladies are welcome to join them.

Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays remain available for open play times. Call some players and go pickle! Currently there is no policy on reserving court time. Starting play on the hour ( 8-9, 9-10, 10-11, etc, ) is recommended so that other “waiting” pickleball or tennis players would be allotted a court at the start of the next hour.

Extra paddles are available for new players to come out and join us. Newer beginner paddles may soon be available for use by residents and/or their guests. Remember to stretch first, stay out of the kitchen, dink it, and, most of all, have fun. So grab a paddle and prepare to pickle or be pickled. For more info and to get on the pickleball email list please contact Joe DiGise at [email protected] or call 609 549-0136.

Happy Mother’s Day 2019

Anna Jarvis, an activist who lived from 1864 to 1948, is credited with having Mother’s Day declared an official holiday, although she never had any children of her own. Anna’s mother, Anne, hosted clubs for mothers in the 1850’s to help them learn to care for their children properly to decrease the infant mortality rate. After her mother died in 1905, Anna conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring mothers for all the sacrifices made for their children. With financial backing from John Wanamaker, a Philadelphia department store owner, she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, Virginia. By 1912, many states, towns and churches celebrated Mother’s Day as an annual holiday. She was persistent in her lobbying efforts, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

The word mom originates from babies. The first thing a baby can vocalize is the ‘ma’ sound, which is why in almost every language the word for mother begins with the letter m or some iteration of the ‘ma’ sound. Today, more calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year-approximately 122 million. It is also the third highest selling holiday for flowers and plants, and the busiest day of the year for restaurants. The official flower of the holiday has always been a white carnation because it was Anne Jarvis’ favorite flower.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers at Sea Breeze, and I leave you with an old Polish proverb. “The greatest love is a mother’s, then comes a dog’s, and then comes a sweetheart’s.” Interesting proverb.

The Kentucky Derby

Did you know that the Kentucky Derby has been a tradition for more than 140 years? There are annual rituals and pageantry associated with this event.

The best Kentucky Derby Traditions are:

1. The Date: The Kentucky Derby has been held on the first Saturday in May since the 1930s in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s held at the end of the two-week long Kentucky Derby Festival.

2. The Backdrop: The Twin Spires on top of the Churchill Downs Grandstand have greeted attendees and have been passed by every Derby winner since 1895 and are one of the most iconic symbols in the sporting world.

3. The Song: The Kentucky Derby field walk onto the track and the parade in front of the stands starts with a chorus of thousands singing “My Old Kentucky Home”. Stephen Foster’s 19th century ballad has been part of the Derby since at least 1930 and is the official state song for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

4. The Garland of Roses: Historically, red roses were handed out to the ladies in attendance at the Derby parties and have been the official flower of the Kentucky Derby. The President of the Churchill Downs Racetrack, Col. Lewis Clark, had adopted the idea of the rose garland. Every year, over 400 red roses are sewn into felt or satin material, surrounded by green fern and ribbon. The Garland of Roses is draped over the winner. The winning jockey is also awarded a bouquet of 60 roses.

5. The Trophy: Each year, the Kentucky Derby Trophy is awarded to the owner of the horse that wins the race. Both 20 and 14 carat gold are combined to create the trophy. Smaller, sterling silver trophies are also awarded to the winning breeder, trainer and jockey.

6. The Fashion: The Kentucky Derby is not just about the sport; it’s about fashion too. Lavish hats, pastel colored suits, dresses with frills, or other bold colored attire is appropriate for women. Men should plan to wear either a light colored or navy sports jacket, and a pair of khaki pants. Men should choose a bold colored bowtie or tie to stand out from the rest of the gentlemen.

7. The Beverage: The Mint Julep is considered the historical beverage of the Kentucky Derby. It is served in a sterling silver julep cup or a souvenir glass. The Mint Julep consists of mint sprigs, powdered sugar, water, bourbon and crushed ice.

So take out your lavish hat and bold colored bow tie, toast with a Mint Julep, brush up on singing “My Old Kentucky Home” and enjoy the Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2019.

Cruising - Taking it “To the Edge”We are constantly hearing news about all the cruise

lines adding new ships to their fleets spanning over the next ten years. They are bigger and better with new technology, shows, restaurants and experiences. Some are updating their private islands to become more of a destination, such as Royal Caribbean’s “Perfect Day at Cocoa Cay” with water parks, zip lining, restaurants, beach cabanas, etc.

The next question is, what do they do with the older ships that aren’t “bigger and better”? Well, Celebrity is “Revolutionizing” their fleet, putting $500 million into modernization of their older ships, taking their fleet “To the Edge”.

Celebrity’s newest ships are the Celebrity Edge and the Celebrity Flora (designed for sailing in the Galapagos Islands). They reflect modern luxury and are breathtaking. They have come a long way from bright orange and red colors to soft and subtle grays and neutrals.

The Celebrity Summit is a popular ship in the northeast, as it sails out of Bayonne NJ in the summer months to Bermuda. Celebrity has just completed an $82 million modernization on the ship, and I was fortunate enough to be on the first sailing out of Puerto Rico before it comes to Bayonne for its first May 5th sailing.

We toured all the cabin categories and the before and after transformations were stunning. The entire ship was stripped down to the metal and everything was completely enhanced with new carpeting, furniture, décor, etc. The staterooms replicate the world’s best boutique hotels. The bedding features the luxurious CashmereTM mattress and the storage has been optimized.

All of the public areas have been enhanced too. For anyone staying in any of the Suites, there is a new Retreat Sundeck and Retreat Lounge for exclusive use of Suite guests. The Retreat Sundeck is a chic enclave taking unwinding outdoors to luxurious new heights with upgraded amenities, cabanas, etc. The Retreat Lounge offers complimentary beverages, bites, entertainment and concierge services.

The restaurants are elegant with sleek and stylish looks from the main restaurant to the marketplace-inspired design of the Ocean view Café, both drawing your focus to the endless views beyond the two-story windows.

The bars, lounges and casino offer an unforgettable night on the town without leaving the ship. The Rendezvous Lounge has an expansive new bar area with panoramic views, or you can escape to its cozy reading nooks with your favorite book. You can settle into the outdoor Sunset Bar’s inviting new seating options that are perfect for dining alfresco or enjoying cocktails with a refreshing sea breeze. The theater has been completely redone with all new seating and Celebrity is now offering The American Ballet on select sailings. This is the first time ballet has ever been performed at sea. I was fortunate enough to experience it and it was amazing.

So if you have sailed on the Celebrity Summit before, or are thinking about it, it is definitely worth sailing on her again. You will enjoy the modern luxury Celebrity Cruises has brought to her.

Creamy Mushroom SauceBest with meat loaf

¼ cup butter 3.5 oz shiitake mushrooms 1 pinch salt 1 sprig fresh rosemary 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3 cups beef broth- coldsalt and pepper to taste 1/3 cup heavy cream

Needs one uncooked prepared meat loaf.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

Remove and discard mushroom stems. Chop the rosemary leaves. Melt butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in mushrooms and a pinch of salt; cook and stir until mushrooms begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Stir in fresh rosemary. Add flour and stir to coat the mushrooms; cook and stir for about 3 minutes. Whisk in cold beef broth, ½ cup at a time, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.Turn heat to high and bring the sauce to a simmer. Simmer a few minutes until sauce starts to thicken. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and stir in heavy cream.

Slide the prepared uncooked meat loaf into the sauce. Bake in the preheated oven about 1 hour. Internal temperature should be at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C). Remove pan from the oven and gently remove meatloaf to a serving platter.

Skim off any extra fat from the surface of the sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium-high heat to reduce until thick, about 5 minutes.

Serves: 4 WW Smart Points = 7 for sauce. Most meat loaf recipes are 7 – 10 Smart Points/serving

Restaurant Review

Fuji 72 Japanese Steakhouse Hibachi & Sushi Bar626 Route 72 EastManahawkin, NJ

This was a Chinese Buffet that was bought by new owners and reopened last year as a Japanese steakhouse. The interior was remodeled, and the design is very pretty and upscale. It has a hibachi area, a separate dining room if you don’t want hibachi, and a sushi bar. It is a casual atmosphere with large screen TVs for sports watching, and it is a BYOB establishment. They are open seven days a week. Lunch is served from 11:00am to 2:30pm. Dinner service begins at 4:00pm Monday to Friday and 12:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. They close at 10:00pm on weekdays, 10:30pm on Friday and 11:00pm on Saturday.

We chose to eat at the hibachi, and we noted the cleanliness of everything and the freshness of the food items brought out by the chef. We had seafood and steak hibachi, and it came with noodles, fried rice, soup and salad. The shrimp and scallops were perfectly cooked, and the steak was cooked as requested. Everything was well seasoned, and of course, the show was fun. There is an extensive dinner and lunch menu, and take out is also offered. The sushi menu is very large, and lunch specials are offered at the sushi bar. A couple of people in our party ordered the sushi, and they were very satisfied. Service was very good, and we will definitely go back.
