Montford Point Marines Meet Stonewall Tell All Pro Dads

February is known as Black History month and there is no better way to celebrate than to have a piece of

black history right in front of your eyes! Stonewall Tell Elementary School received a real treat this past Tuesday,

February 12, 2013, when the Montford Point Marine Association (MPMA) came to speak at our All Pro Dad's event.

Learning about where we come from is a very important part of growing to appreciate the time and family

we were born into. STES All Pro Dad's is a monthly gathering of fathers and their children with the purpose of

growing closer together. The Montford Point Marines were the first African Americans who entered the United

States Marine Corp from 1942-1949 in New River, North Carolina. Because these men were given a chance to prove

themselves, in a time where we were still segregated, they made it impossible to deny that African Americans were

just as capable during a time of war as any other American citizens. However, it would not be until early 1948 that

segregation within the Marine Corps would completely be a thing of the past.

The gentlemen who came to visit us told stories of how it was to be the first to break the color barrier during

World War II. They also shared memories and articles about being awarded with the "highest civilian award to be

given by congress", the Congressional Gold Medal, in June of 2012 for serving with valor during a time of

discrimination.

This taught STES All Pro Dads, and their children, a valuable piece of history that we must never forget. No

matter what trials and hard times may come our way we must stay focused on the prize at hand. Whether the prize

is protecting your country, as the Montford Point Marines did, or protecting your values and morals instilled in you

from your family, we must always remember to stay on the straight and narrow path. We must also remember to

thank the brave men who risked their lives and paved the way for social change in this great nation we live in today.

Strategic Plan 2017

This is the school system’s roadmap for how Fulton County

Schools aims to improve student achievement over the next

five years. Three goals serve as the district’s measure for

long-term student success, which is that students will graduate

on time and be ready for college or the workforce.

• Graduation Rate – 90% of Fulton students will

graduate on time

• College Readiness – 85% of Fulton’s seniors will be

eligible for admission to a University System of Georgia

college or university

• Career Readiness – 100% of Fulton's graduates will

be work-ready certified

“These are big goals, but they are attainable,” said

Superintendent Avossa. “Our strategic plan is focused on

improving outcomes for all students, and the only way to do

this is to set measurable goals and put supports in place to help

our students and staff to reach them.”

To that end, as part of its “Building Our Future” strategic

planning initiative, the school system will focus on five key

areas – instruction, people, technology, effective schools and

resources – to drive improvement.

• Instruction – Students will be engaged in learning

that enables them to reach their full potential for college and

career readiness

• People – Fulton County Schools will attract and

retain the most talented and effective employees in K-12

education

• Technology – Students, parents, teachers and

administrators will have the tools and information they need to

accelerate learning

• Effective Schools – School leadership will be

collaborative and will balance innovation with accountability

• Resources – Student needs will be supported with efficient

and effective allocation of staff, instructional materials and equipment.

The strategic plan will guide the system’s direction over the

next five years and is the result of many conversations with the

school board, teachers and school leaders as well as

engagement with parents and the community.

The plan is posted at www.fultonschools.org/StrategicPlan2017.

How to Manage Anger

Constantly blowing your stack not only alienates others, it can contribute to health problems, including headaches, stomach upset and heart attack. To take control:

Count to 10 & take 3 or 4 deep breaths. Ask yourself: “Will this really matter a year from now?”

Walk it off. Go for a short stroll. Find a place where you can think out loud and take a second look at how you are reacting to a situation.

Distract yourself. Example: In a traffic jam, play soothing music instead of pounding the horn. At work, dive into a task to turn negative energy positive.

Keep a log. Monitor hostile thoughts to discover how frequently your temperature rises. This will help sort out the real causes of your anger, which are often things beyond control.

ASK for help. Don’t be afraid to try counseling, meditation, lifestyle changes or other kinds of ongoing psychological help.

Your health may depend on it.

Talented And Gifted-

February Critical Thinking

This month we will focus on Direct Analogies…

Direct Analogy allows the students to compare two

concepts or objects directly. Direct analogies allow

students to see ideas and problems from a new

perspective. This helps them develop more creative

ideas to solve problems.

Allow your child to answer the following

analogies…Please send responses to Mrs. Burton~

TAG Room B125…

• How is a map like a shoe?

• How is a recipe like a jogging trail?

• How is a book like a picture?

• How is a heart like a computer?
