The International Conclave on Sugar Crops and
SugarFest – 2014: “Sweeteners and Green Energy
from Sugar Crops – Emerging Technologies” was held
at IISR, Lucknow during 15th– 17th February, 2014. At
the conclave Mr. Shivajirao Deshmukh, Director
General, VSI delivered a foundation lecture on “Indian
Sugar Industry: Research and Development Priorities
for 21st Century”. The Executive Body of Society for
Sugar Research and Promotion (SSRP) has
recommended his name for the “Award of Excellence
of Society for Sugar Research & Promotion: 2014” and
received the award certificate at this Sugar Conclave.
Sugarcane is raw material for sugar industry and
one of the major cash crops cultivated on about 4.5
million hectares area by the about 50 million farmers
in various states of India. He presented average
sugarcane productivity variations in various states
of the country and mentioned that alarming situation
for Indian sugar industry due to the stagnancy and
continuous decline in sugarcane productivity with
stagnant sugar recovery around 10% over the years.
He put up the statistical data on wide variations in
sugarcane productivity of tropical (77 to 85 tons/ha)
and subtropical (45 to 60 tons/ha) sugarcane growing
states of the country and as compared to sugarcane
yield of 350 tons/ha achieved by some of the cane
growers. Therefore, there is great need to bridge the
gap between potential and present sugarcane
productivity and improving sugarcane recovery upto
12%. He focused on this major issue of stagnation in
average sugarcane yield & sugarcane recovery and
emphasized that there is urgent need to take remedial
measures for improving sugarcane productivity with
proper implementation of advanced cane development
and management programme.
He mentioned that to bridge the gap between
potential and actual cane yield is possible, if the
various recommendations made by Research Institute
and State Agriculture universities implemented
properly put into the practice at cane growers cane
fields.
To achieve the expected level of sugarcane
productivity, he explained the most important priorities
needed to be implemented by Indian sugar industry.
I) Varietal development and planting programme
: SBI Coimbatore is only Institute in the country
working for the development of varieties through
conventional hybridization method. Recently, VSI has
established Sugarcane Breeding Centre at Amboli,
Dist. Sindhudurg in Maharashtra. This centre is made
fully operational with a wide range of germplasm and
CoVSI 9805 a mid-late maturing variety is released in
2009. The variety VSI 434 developed through tissue

culture technique is an extra early maturing high
sugared and drought tolerant variety has been
released in 2012 for general cultivation in
Maharashtra. The priority has to be given to develop
high yielding and high sugared sugarcane varieties
resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses suitable for
all agro-climatic zones in India at faster way presently
that it takes about 17 to 18 years. Molecular biology
and genetic engineering techniques may help in
conventional breeding and tissue culture technique
for improvement in varietal development.
II) Encourage Seed Multiplication and replacement
Programme : The good quality seed material is not
used even by 10 percent of sugarcane farmers
because of inadequate implementation of three-tier
seed multiplication programme at sugar mill level. It
is proposed to develop 50% seed replacement
through conventional seed programme and 50%
through tissue culture technique. Tissue culture
needs to be encouraged for assured genetic purity,
better and early germination, quicker coverage by
better varieties and higher sugarcane yield.
III) Soil fertility management : An integrated
nutrient management system having judicious
combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers
coupled with bio-fertilizers may serve a potential tool
for sustaining the soil fertility and productivity in the
sugarcane-based intensive cropping system on a
long-term basis. An advanced techniques of remote
sensing and GIS need to be exploited in soil fertility
evaluation, mapping and delineation of salt affected
soils so as to suggest nutrient management and
reclamation of problematic soils.
IV) Exploitation of Microbial inoculants : A
biofertilizer have the ability to fix atmospheric N and
to mobilize the plant nutrients and growth regulating
substances. Glucanoacetobacer is an entophytic
bacteria plays an important role in N fixation and
fulfills the 50% requirement of nitrogen in sugarcane.
Therefore, priority has been given for research and
development like mass production of efficient
bioinoculants in agriculture.
V) Drip irrigation and Fertigation : It is crucial to
use available water more preciously and judiciously
so that land and water use efficiency can be
increased manifold. Drip irrigation is effective in
saving of 45 to 50% irrigation water in sugarcane.
Raingun sprinkler also saves 30 to 35 % irrigation
water. Fertigation through drip saves 25 to 30%
chemical fertilizers. A new technique of subsurface
drip irrigation is also very efficient system for increase
water and fertilizer use efficiency in sugarcane.
VI) Strengthening Research on Mechanization : To
cope with farm labour shortage and reducing expenses
on operations like planting, inter-culturing and
harvesting. The priorities are to be given to develop
indigenous tractor drawn implements suitable for
small, marginal and high land holdings.
VII) Plant protection through bio-control agents:
Chemical control diseases and pests are not
environment friendly. Bio-control measures can play
an important role in effective management of many
pests of sugarcane on long term basis. Focus has to
given on this area for research and development. The
present system of Central Insecticide Board for
registration and production of bio-pesticides is very
stringent need to make easier.
VIII) Improvement in productivity of ratoon crop:
The area under ratoon cane is around 40% in most of
the sugar mills that have lower sugarcane yield than
plant cane. Hence, efforts are required for increasing
productivity of ratoon cane through ratoon
management practices.
IX) Strengthening HRD and Extension mechanism:
Present extension mechanism in sugarcane
agriculture is not up to the desired level and needs to
be strengthened immediately. There is need of
separate cane development wing with computer and
web based training facilities at every sugar unit.
X) Development of cane juice quality based cane
pricing policy : At Present, cane growers are getting
cane payment through FRP and SAP system of cane
payments set by Central and State Government which
is linked with sugar recovery of the sugar mill. The
implementation of juice quality ( pol in cane) based
cane price system will encourage farmers for growing
high sugared varieties and also improve sugarcane
productivity for better remuneration.
