DEAL ME INBy Mark Pilarski (reprinted with permission of the author)

Trimming sail for the new yearDear Mark: I met a player while playing video poker who claimed that he always played with an edge against the house, and wins all the time. The best pay tables where we play are Jacks-or-better 9/6 machines, and only four of them I might add. You have stated that on those particular machines, the house edge is a half of one per-cent. How then can he claim that he always has an edge against the house? Phil G.For starters, Phil, winning all the time, is never guaranteed, even if said player has a mathematical edge against the house. I know plenty of video poker players who make, or try to make a profession out of play-ing video poker who have slumps lasting weeks, even months, and that’s with a slight advantage against the casino. As for his so-called edge, yes, Phil, it’s possible. Using your example, a player playing a 9/6 machine with perfect strategy can expect a 99.5% return. By getting at least a one per-cent return in cash backs and other freebies, it’s possible for the overall return to exceed 100%. By catching his edge from the benefits of comps like cash backs, or RFB’s (room, food or beverage), he still needs to hit his fair share of royals, which appear, on average, once in every 40,000 hands. Without his hitting a royal flush on a Jacks-or-better 9/6 machine, the house edge becomes 2.5%.Another example where you would theoretically have an edge against the house is seeking out progressive video poker machines where the jackpot exceeds a certain amount, but in the end, Phil, it all comes down to identifying machines with a decent payback, employing per-fect play, getting your fair share of comps, and hitting those elusive royals.

Dear Mark: If multiple odds on a crap table reduce the casino advantage so much, do you ever have an edge against the house? Gary I.Every crap wager that includes mul-tiple odds has two parts, a pass line bet and free odds.On your pass line wager, Gary, the house edge is a concrete 1.41 per-cent. Backing it up with free odds brings down the overall edge on the combination to well under one per-cent, because distinct from all other craps wagers, free odds carry NO house edge. All bets are paid off at true odds. For instance, let’s say that you bet $5 on the pass line and the point is 4. On a double-odds table, where you are allowed to make an odds bet twice the size of your original pass bet, you are allowed to back your pass line bet with $10 in free odds. The odds against your winning are 2-1, because with two six-sided dice, there are six ways of making a 7 (loser) and three ways of making a winner 4. If you win, your pass line bet is paid at even money, bringing you $5 in winnings, but your odds bet is paid at the 2-1 true odds, bringing you an additional $20.The more odds you are allowed to take, the more the house edge on your pass line bet is diluted. With single odds, the house edge on the pass with odds grouped together drops to 0.8 percent. Per my exam-ple above, double odds, the house edge drops to 0.6 percent, 10x odds, 0.2 percent and 0.02 percent with 100x odds. You will note, Gary, that the house edge continues to get watered down the more odds you take, but it is never completely eliminated to the point where it would give you an edge against the house. You can only one-up the casino through comps and cash backs (see question above). = = = = Gambling Wisdom of the Week: “Most people bet with their hands, not over them, and realize that gambling and speculation are good servants and bad masters.” - Reuven and Gabrielle a Brenner, Gambling and Speculation 1990

Conservation

Take 10 minutes to check your trees in AugustLook for signs of Asian longhorned beetle this monthImagine what the summer heat would feel like without the cooling shade of your backyard trees. If you appreciate your trees, August is the time to show them how much you care. Take a few minutes to check your trees for Asian longhorned beetles and the damage their larvae leave behind.“August is Tree Check Month – the best time to spot the round, drill-like holes made by the Asian longhorned beetle,” said Jeff Zimmer, acting director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division. “These destructive pests have invaded areas of Ohio, New York and Massachusetts, causing the removal of over 180,000 trees. In order to pre-vent this in Michigan, we are asking everyone to look for and report signs of the Asian long-horned beetle.”The Asian longhorned beetle is on Michigan’s invasive species watch list because it poses an immediate or potential threat to the state’s econ-omy, environment or human health.

What to look forChecking your trees is important because early detection of the Asian longhorned beetle can save hundreds to thousands of trees. This beetle affects many common deciduous trees, such as maples, birch, willow and others. So what should you look for?• Dime-sized, perfectly round, beetle exit holes in the trunk or branches.• Shallow chew marks in the bark, where the beetle lays its egg.• Sawdust-like material at the base of the tree, or where branches meet the trunk.• Dead branches on otherwise leafy trees.

• Large (1 inch to 1 1/2 inches long), shiny black beetles with white spots and white striped antennae.

Check for look-alikesA similar beetle native to Michigan is often mis-taken for the Asian longhorned beetle. The white spotted pine sawyer has a distinctive white spot below the base of its head – between the tops of its wing covers. This and its brown or dull black color distinguish the sawyer from the Asian longhorned beetle.

What to doIf you see signs of Asian longhorned beetle dam-age, or the beetle itself, follow these steps:• Make note of what was found and where. Take a photo, if possible.• Try to capture the insect, place it in a container and freeze it. This will preserve it for easier identification.• Report findings as soon as possible to

the U.S. Department of Agriculture by calling 866-702-9938 or completing an online form at AsianLonghornedBeetle.com.• Reports also can be made to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Develop-ment at 800-292-3939 or [email protected] more information on the Asian longhorned beetle, visit Michigan.gov/ALB.Michigan’s Invasive Species Program is coop-eratively implemented by the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Develop-ment.Contact: Joanne Foreman, 517-284-5814 or James Wieferich, 517-242-6300

Walk Slowly With PurposeAugust

By Dominic FortunaRAPID CITY -- “Hot August night and the leaves hanging down and the grass on the ground smell-ing sweet...” The opening words to one of my favorite Neil Diamond songs. August, the month in the year that everything just seems to evolve and mature. The corn in the fields, the lakes are finally warmer (you noticed I said warmer not warm), the grass in the fields and the gardens are in full bloom, and some on second picking. The Tigers know where they stand by August and the kids are in that summer vacation mode. But some-thing else is happening, too. All the shops, hotels, restaurants, and ice cream parlors have found their stride. The help is all trained, the resorters are almost at capacity, and seeing the sun shine hot is getting to be the norm. I took some time to ask one of our local business owners what she thought about the month of August and being in business. Linda Watt, owner of the lovely ice cream parlor and local eats in Rapid City called the Cone Cor-ral told me this: “August means a slowing down from the hectic pace that begins in May. New hires get trained, baseball teams come in, and there is a build up to the Fourth of July. In August, the staff is settled into a routine and familiar with the menu and the customers. Many families visit the store during August and everyone seems relaxed and enjoying ice cream or a meal out on the porch.”I think Linda hit the nail right on the head when it comes to being a business owner in Northern Michigan and experiencing the month of August. But now let me take the time to draw an inter-esting parallel. When I think of change, I usually think about the month of October. October finds the weather getting colder, the leaves changing color and falling off the trees, the animals getting ready for winter. If you planted a garden this year, you started in the spring, you tilled the ground, planted the seeds, and watered it, waiting for it to grow. Along comes August, and you find that the hard work you put in pays off with beautiful flowers and/or yummy vegetables. The same goes for some of life’s finer and more profound events. Let’s take relationships for instance. Don’t you believe that the time you put into it will almost always mature at one point and grow into a partnership that has respect, honesty, and all the other integral nuts and bolts needed to harvest a good relationship? I’m not just talking about an intimate relationship with a spouse or lover. I mean all relationships: teacher and student, parent and child, boss and employee. All of these relationships turn out to be what you put into them. Just as the sun, rain and the beautiful weather of spring, June and July bring a beautiful evolving August. So do the relation-ships of our lives. I’ve owned beagles for most of my life. People always ask me, “Aren’t they dif-ficult dogs to raise?” To which I always respond,

“A relationship between a dog and its owner is equal to the time you spend with your pet.” In other words, you put the time into the relationship with that beagle and he or she will become the best beagle that dog can be. You’ve got to put the time in, folks! So, let’s turn this conversation around a bit. Let’s say you don’t water the garden. Let’s say you put the beagle in a cage every day, or at the end of the chain in the backyard, never giving the poor dog any attention. Or how about this one? The boss or owner never shows up to the job. So what did you get? You get what you put into it. If you don’t put the time in, you don’t, and won’t, get good results. My conversation with Linda continued. I asked Linda to give me a little more detail about what August meant to her being a long-time resident of

Northern Michigan. She replied with these won-derful words of wisdom and experience, “For me, August is a time to look forward to the fall. The pace of life slows and I look forward to the football and marching band season. And if I wasn’t busy with ice cream, I’d be outside relaxing in a lawn chair or on a beach soaking up the sun. Northern Michigan seems to slow down during August. Leaves start to turn along Rapid City Road. and you can feel the summer is waning. A feeling or emotion to describe August would be a sense of change in looking forward to the fall, school, and football season. A switching gears month, defi-nitely.” Linda is definitely one of those owners that puts the time into her business. I always see her there at the Cone Corral. She’s always smiling and you can tell she has a great relationship with her staff because they are smiling, too.So here you are the beautiful month of August. Have you power-washed that deck yet? Have you painted the house yet? How about that driveway? Is it ready for fall? Well, if you’re like me I’d say a big fat NAH to all of the above! I’m still

spending my time in my relationships. My rela-tionships with my dog, my kids, my Tigers, and myself. Building memories that only can be found in the summertime in Northern Michigan. So let’s “move up the road” as the Neil Diamond song continues. Up the road to the endings of August. We can see it straight ahead. August is winding down. But didn’t we have a great garden, and what a great staff, and maybe just maybe a little summer lovin’? Summer days drifting away and August always true to its place, leaves us again with the sweet smell of another great Summer in Northern Michigan.
