RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

2010-present Project focusing on reentry of felons into society. 85 in-depth interviews with felons who were within 24 hours of release. Particular focus on perception of community and family support.

2007-present Project focusing on partnerships between police and community corrections

agencies. Two surveys conducted in Texas in 2007 and 2016. 1996-1998 I organized and conducted a series of seminars that deal with environmental

crime. Seminars were attended by convicted environmental criminals, community leaders interested in environmental crime, and small business owners in need of information so as not to become criminals.

1996-1998 Working with two colleagues, we conducted a secondary analysis of data

collected by the Environmental Protection Agency on environmental crime. We studied the nature and extent of criminal prosecutions of environmental offenses.

1994-1995 I conducted a survey of all 1988, 1990 and 1992 recipients of baccalaureate

degrees in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University. The study focused on graduates' assessment of their experiences at the university, their employment histories, and their contacts with SHSU since graduation.

1993-1994 I was involved in a study that focused on the outcomes of correctional

education on post release recidivism, education, and employment, and prerelease disciplinary problems. The research was a cooperative effort of the

17

Criminal Justice Center of Sam Houston State University and the Windham School System of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice--Institutional Division.

1992-1994 Susan Weeks and I conducted interviews in Japanese prisons aimed at

understanding the differences in prison experiences between men and women, and street and white-collar criminals. We surveyed 175 inmates (100 women and 75 men) in two prisons and were able to interview in-depth 24 of these individuals.

1991-1992 Working with a colleague at Sam Houston State University, we initiated a

research project focusing on female victimization of white-collar crime. In an initial stage, we studied all forms of female victimization of white-collar crime (i.e., females as consumers, employees, and members of the general public).

1990-1993 I conducted a research project on using admissions to emergency rooms as an

alternative measure of drug abuse in the U.S. Working with a research assistant, I obtained relevant information for the City of Houston and compared it to official statistics and self-report data on drug abuse independent from self-reports and official statistics.

1988-1990 I conducted a follow-up on my dissertation project. With the help of a grant

from the University of Idaho, I was able to travel to several cities in the U.S. and in Switzerland for the purpose of conducting additional face-to-face interviews with individuals involved in the organization I had studied. Interviews were conducted with a wide range of people: academicians, social activists, business representatives, and governmental officials.

1986-1988 Dissertation Project. I studied a social movement organization that started out

by focusing on the marketing of infant formula in less developed countries, but shifted its attention subsequently to the involvement of multinational corporations in the production of nuclear weapons. The research design was that of a case study. I interviewed activists, volunteers, business representatives, and government officials. I corresponded with the Internal Revenue Service (income information of non-profit organizations is in the public domain under the Freedom of Information Act) and monitored media coverage of the organization I studied, the Infant Formula Action Coalition (INFACT). In addition, I engaged in some participant observation when I attended street actions of local chapters.
