On Saturday, February 8th, Sac Arts broke the mold … and it was great!!! Sac Arts took a chance on a new kind of venture: joining forces with another form of art inour broader community in a way that benefits both. The first project of this venture is TheArt of Theatre: From Hamlet to Hairspray a juried show focused on different aspects of thetheater experience. Many artists were puzzled as to what kind of art that would be. Those that asked about itand thought about it and entered pieces were very pleased with what they did and from thecomments we’ve received, people are really enjoying the show! It is different, the pieces arevaried, and it is interesting. We didn’t receive as many pieces as we would have liked, but we ended up with a wonderfulshow, and are hoping that when we do our next The Art of … show, members will be moreopen to doing something a little out of their comfort zone. However, the point of doing the Art of Theatre was not to move artists out of their comfortzone, it was to engage with other forms of art in our community in a way that brings adifferent audience to our Center and spreads our name to a much broadercommunity. As part of this effort, we wanted our Second Saturday reception to be different, memorableand inclusive of theatre arts. We worked with Lonon Smith (a director, actor, and writer)who organized actors from local productions to perform on our stage during the reception. We decorated the Center in a theatre theme and ensured there was lots of food, beer andwine to create a party-like atmosphere. Our President, Mary Hargrave, even came dressedin a Bollywood ensemble - which looked great on her, I might add.
Our Mission is to encourage
the creation and presentationof original visual arts, to
support the cultural life of thecommunity, and to encourage
all artists to fulfill theirpotential.

PRESIDENTS LETTERMARY HARGRAVE
I hope by now you have all seen the new website for Sac Arts (formerly known as
SFAC). This was the work of a wonderful committee of folks who care about your
art center. It was one of the final projects of the Steering Committee, whose
purpose was to implement the Flanagan Report recommendations including our
new "nickname" and our new logo. With the new website, we are able to use new
membership software to allow the renewal of memberships throughout the year,
not all at one time in January. This feature has been positively received by our
members - some of whom did not want to join in October and then renew in
January! We have implemented many of the recommendations made by the PR
committee to make our outreach to the community more effective and ongoing. I
will report more on this in the next newsletter.
How about the lighting in the Galleries! You made it happen with your painting of
5X5s for the fundraising sale. Special thanks to Peggy Colombo and Stephanie
Lynch for having the idea and making it happen.
The Art of the Theatre show was fabulous! Thanks to everyone, especially the
show chair Mikki Bako Sorensen, who entered and worked on the show, it was a
big success and we had an unusual second Saturday with performances from
various Sacramento community theatre groups. Who could forget two guys
"falling for each other"? The decor was imaginative, making the entire evening a
great party. We have partnered with the poets, Community Theatre - what will be
next? Stay tuned!
Unfortunately, the Portuguese Show was not to be - after a long planning process
and efforts by a large hardworking committee, headed by Sheila Jacobs, we were
unable to complete the processes through no fault of our own or
our committee. So you will see that we have substituted an
Abstract Art show during the month of May and June. Please
consider entering this show though I know the timelines are
short!
Bus trips have returned. I know I hate to drive in SF traffic even
though there are many shows I would like to see there. This
member service will allow you to see great shows and drink wine
on the way home. Thanks to Skip Lee for encouraging the return
of the bus trips and helping with the process.
Guess what! BIG DOG IS COMING AGAIN! May 7!
Your chance to put your donations where your art is!

Thank you for supporting your Sac Arts
Center!
Peggy Colombo, Show Chair,
We had 5 pieces performed on our stage and it was hard to tell who was moreenthusiastic - the audience or the actors! Long time members expressed howpleased they were to have such wonderful entertainment on a SecondSaturday. New guests were impressed and told us they were staying longerthan they had intended because it was so much fun.
Most of the actors had to do their pieces and then run off to do their ownshows that were playing that evening, but several were able to mix andmingle with the crowd between pieces and the audience really enjoyed thatinteraction. A number of the actors commented that they hadn’t even knownwe existed and several said they thought we had a wonderful space here. Weencouraged them to tell their friends and families and to come back to seefuture art shows.
Lonon and several of the actors were thrilled with the size of the crowd thatfilled the seats and the enthusiasm of the audience. We definitely made afavorable impression on them.
We also had Doug Newton in Gallery 2, playing his guitar and singing betweenstage pieces. The bar was set up nearby and it created an atmosphere inwhich people wandered through to see the art and also to hang out andchat. So our many guests had options as to how to enjoy their evening.
In addition to all the other good news from Saturday’s reception, we wereable to capture 75 names, addresses and zip codes - information that will bevery helpful to us when applying for grants. Sac Arts has made some new, very good friends in the theatre communityand we will be looking at ways to build upon this friendship going forward. We don’t plan another juried art show focusing on theatre, but there may beother ways to use our stage and our Center to benefit our members and thelarger arts community, and to increase our visibility in the Sacramento area.
We can also think about ways to make our Second Saturdays moreinteresting and unique so that we capture more of the patrons who use thatevening as an opportunity to absorb some artistic culture.

THE MIXPEGGY COLOMBO
Have you heard about our new group of mixed mediaartists?
If not, you need to know about “The Mix." MaryHargrave, Sac Arts, President and Peggy Colombo, 1stVP finally did it! They recently started this group to getvarious artists together to talk about their art, how theydo it and to show off their styles. And what a fun, talented, artsy, mixed media group of painters, jewelers, and creative people they haveassembled!
The group has created challenges to produce the sameart subject but in one’s own style, another was to finishsomeone’s unfinished piece of art but in one’s ownstyle. They all created their own name tags – no twoalike.
Currently, The Mix is having a Barbie Doll challenge(whole, parts and/or pieces) to produce a piece of art,due June 5. The judge for the event will be Mr. Skip Lee(he knows a thing or two about Barbie’s)
Each month, artists bring in their favorite tools todiscuss or explain interesting methods (Citra Solv was agood one!), or best shopping spots for paper, metal, paints, etc.
February 7 was an interesting demonstration from KayEvans, a self-taught mosaic artist. Kay broughtbeautiful pieces that showed her different techniquesas well as her tools of the trade.
In March, The Mix will have a demonstration from ourvery own Mix member Kaaren Krueger. Kaaren, atalented mixed media artist will show how to use a gelplate for producing art on paper with acrylic paint.Kaaren would like all to take part in this as a firsthandlearning event. Now you know about “The Mix".
To join, please contact: Peggy Colombo,[email protected], orMary Hargrave,[email protected] Friday of each month, Sac Arts, Gallery 3, at 12:15 PM.
The 20+ watercolors on display in the foyer of the Fine
Arts Center during the month of March were painted in
the last few years. They depict some of my favorite
places in England, France and Northern California. I first
took up watercolor painting when I was a student in
Oxford, England in the 1970's, and have been influenced
by the English method of Pure Watercolor. During my
years as a pastor in New Haven, Connecticut I found
inspiration in the extensive collection of British
Watercolors at the Yale Center for British Art. The Center
held many examples of watercolor by Turner, Girtin,
Constable, DeWint, Cox, Bonnington and others, and I
learned much from observing them. My recent
trips to southern France, and England, including a
course at the Windrush Gallery in the Cotswolds west of
Oxford, offered further encouragement for my painting.
I have also benefited from courses taught by Hilda Levy
and Linda Acres. The landscape watercolors in this
show feature my personal response to some of my
favorite places.

Letter from Our President
NCA membership has grown over the past 7 months, so we are having a New Members Tea on Sunday, April 19, at Board Secretary Barbara Marshall’s home. Based on my experience, I think you will find the tea to be a delightful afternoon. You will enjoy yummy food, you and other artists will share your art and process, and you will have a chance to get to know each another. So, new members, please look for your invitation to the tea.
The upcoming "Artistic Journey" NCA Members Show, chaired by Barbara Marshall, is a way to illuminate the club. See article below. I encourage every NCA member to enter. It will be a magnificent show! The May 9 Second Saturday artist reception will be a celebration and bring us together as a club. Put it on your calendar and join us!
As I have mentioned previously, we would like to increase the visibility of NCA. To that end, if you are a NCA member and are in a show in the community, please text or email Ruby Singh, our 2nd Vice President, the following: A quality picture of you with your show artwork, the title of piece, and the name of show. Ruby will post your information to our NCA Instagram. Ruby’s text cell phone is (916) 230-6549; her email is [email protected].
I end with this: NCA Member, the late Kenneth Potters, MP, once told me, “Everyone needs someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to.” I agree wholeheartedly.

Newsletter March, April 2020 Presidents Message It’s All About Composition, Part 2
Cropping I like to paint portraits. Sometimes a head is just
right when surrounded on three sides by negative space. But it can also be very boring! I’ve learned that I can sometimes improve the composition by severing my subject’s head – not the whole head, mind you, but just the top or the side (or both, if I’m feeling especially cruel). Those who view the painting will naturally assume the person’s cranium is still intact, and will reattach it in their minds. Why would I slice up a person’s skull? Because, now I have two or three shapes (negative spaces) around the head that may be more interesting than a single negative space -- more innovative, less predictable.
Aspect Ratio Related to negative spaces is selecting an
appropriate aspect ratio for the painting I have in mind. Aspect ratio refers to the relationship of the dimensions of the paper. Watercolor pads come in dimensions such as 9” x 12”, a 3:4 aspect ratio (which you find by dividing 9 and 12 by 3). A 16” x 20” pad is a 4:5 aspect ratio. A square is a 1:1 aspect ratio. My norm is a 7:10 aspect ratio, which I use for a half sheet, a quarter sheet, or an eighth sheet when matted.
It’s easy to force every painting to fit my normal
paper size. But the question I’m learning to ask is: Which cropping makes the best composition? I find myself going to a square format perhaps 25% of the time. Very occasionally, I’ll use long and thin. I’m gradually learning to crop the scene ahead of time to the most interesting composition, so I don’t have to crop the finished painting later to rescue it.
Eye Path For me the frontier in composition (where I admit
I’m only scratching the surface) is planning the viewer’s eye path to take them around (and not out) of the picture. The Old Masters are, well, “masters” at this. My latest painting of Mt. Kenya (the second tallest mountain in Africa) uses the novice device of a dirt path from the bottom edge to lead the eye on a diagonal to the base of the mountains. But how do I
get the viewer to climb the peak? When I get really good at this, I’ll be able to lead the viewer around without the viewer even being aware of it. Ah, the untapped power of a true artist!
You Can Learn Good Composition from Any Medium
When I first started, I studied mainly watercolor paintings. How did they do that? But then I realized that good composition transcends the medium. I found that I can learn composition from oil painters, of all people!
I want to encourage you to make a special study of composition, if you haven’t already done so. It will really improve your painting. I recommend you purchase and work through Ian Roberts, Mastering Composition (North Light Books, 2008). Yes, he’s an oil painter, but don’t hold it against him.
I’ve still got a long way to go. But I’ve become a serious student of composition, and it’s gradually helping. Why don’t you join me in this quest for superior composition?
Ralph F. Wilson, President
