Welcome
to the
2016 CELC Symposium
A warm welcome is extended to all presenters and
participants of the 2016 CELC Symposium. In anticipation of
your visit to Singapore, you may have many questions not directly
related to the presentations.
This guide aims to anticipate some of your questions and to
serve as a quick reference for you. The following pages contain
information on transportation, communication, dining, shopping,
and entertainment options. For those accessing this through a
computer, tablet or smart phone, the Visitors’ Guide includes
links to assist you.
In addition to this Visitors’ Guide, when you arrive at the
symposium, you will receive a copy of Your Quarterly Guide and
a free map of Singapore published by Where Singapore and the
Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in your symposium welcome
materials. These STB publications contain current information
about events, shopping, dining and other attractions in Singapore.
At the end of this Visitors’ Guide you will find a brief section
on what to do in the event of an emergency. We would like to
suggest that you take a few minutes to peruse this page. Should you
fall ill or need assistance while you are attending the symposium,
please seek out our representatives at the Hospitality Table located
outside of the auditorium and they will do their best to get you the
help you need.
We hope that your time here at the CELC 2016 Symposium
is both professionally and personally enriching.

General Information for Visitors For those who are visitors to Singapore, welcome! As you may already know,
Singapore is a vibrant multi-racial city-state-country. We hope your stay here is a
pleasant one.
Singaporeans have achieved a great deal in the last 50 years and while you are
here, you will enjoy the benefits of these efforts. Singapore has a well-deserved
reputation as a clean and green city. From the establishment of a water management
system that provides clean tap water, to a network of public transportation that
efficiently moves people around the island, Singapore has successfully developed into
a nation that offers “green” alternatives on environmental issues. In an effort to
decrease the overuse of disposable plastic bottles, NUS has installed drinking water
dispensers which offer both hot and cool water. Please feel free to fill and refill your
own water bottle at these dispensers. With this in mind, CELC staff have endeavoured
to live out these values with good environmental practices. These practices include
applying a minimalist approach to the use of natural resources and the generation of
waste. Therefore, presenters have been encouraged to provide their handouts in an e-
format to reduce the printing of materials that can easily be accessed online. If you are
so inclined, we would like to encourage you to utilize re-usable drinking and
tableware whenever possible. Please seek out the waste bins that offer recycling
options conveniently located in and around the Stephen Riady Centre.
When transiting around during your stay, we encourage you to use Singapore’s
efficient public transport system. However, the buses and trains can become quite
congested, especially during peak commuting hours. If you are traveling to the airport
during a peak travel period, it is recommended that you leave for the airport a bit early
to avoid crowds and traffic. In addition, as the trains and buses can be quite crowded
during the morning and evening commute, we recommend that you refrain from riding
the commuter trains or buses with luggage. Taxi fares are reasonable, especially if you
are traveling with others. Additional information regarding local transport is detailed
in this guide.
As stated previously, Singapore is a multi-racial, multi-cultural society which highly
values harmonious co-existence. While you are here, we encourage you to forge new
friendships with those attending the symposium and enjoy the variety of cultural
exchanges you will have with your fellow participants. Savour the unique encounters
which emerge within this amazingly diverse collection of World English speakers.

Exercise
NUS is a great place for outdoor exercising. If you are staying on campus you may wish
to use the athletic field or the footpaths for brisk walking or jogging. There are many
stairs and hills that can assist you in your cardio-workout. Please be mindful to proceed
at your own risk. Some of the roadways are very narrow in NUS and traffic travels at a
brisk pace. In addition, the weather here can seriously affect those exercising. Please
plan for hydration during and following your workout. Lastly, for your safety and
assistance, we urge you to exercise with a partner.
