MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR (2013-14)

JEREMY HURST

Message from District Governor - Message du Gouverneur de District -Jeremy Hurst

Dear fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors and Family of Rotary,

Michelle and I returned from the Interclub Assembly in Cap Haitien, Haiti, in early February to meet with the Blue and Grand Cayman Rotaract clubs in Cayman, followed by my first official visit to an e-Club, the E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020.

After traveling for at least a day to carry out most our club visits, being able to come downstairs to the comfort of my own couch and meet with the E-Club’s members from as far away as

Frankfurt, London, and Canada - as well as through the Caribbean - was a new and unusual experience for me. Upon reflection, this meeting shows how far we have come as an organisation.

An e-club may not be for every Rotarian, but there should be at least one, and hopefully many more, e-clubs in every district as they provide Rotarians with the opportunity to become, or stay, part of the Rotary family in a range of circumstances that traditional clubs may not. The E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020 clearly delivers what its Rotarians are looking for, both in terms of fun, fellowship and service, with projects like the Butterfly Storybook. I am as proud of them as I am of every single traditional club in our vibrant district. E-Clubs are here to stay, as is the technology they reply upon.

Rotary’s ability to engage and embrace this technology will make the difference to the degree to which we survive and prosper. It is not an option for us; it’s an imperative. So, in Magazine month, when we recognise the importance to our organisation of publications such as The Rotarian, it’s heartening to see that it now has an online version so we can all enjoy it on our laptops and tablets as well as in its original format (check it out at http://therotarianmagazine.com/). This issue includes an interview with Warren Buffet on hunger, and a touching story on how Rotary is helping in rebuilding post-tsunami Japan.

This is the real benefit that technology offers – the ability to tell the story better to more people – a story which as Rotarians we know to be one of significant value, as we do good in our communities and across the world. Technology can be frustrating (case in point the learning curve we’ve all experienced with Rotary Central trying to upload our Foundation, Service and Membership goals); however, the returns on investment are, and will continue to be, massive.

Tonight I will read the Rotarian on my iPad. Last week, I carried out the official visit to one of District 7020’s clubs from my couch, and at the District Conference in three short weeks’ time (www.dc2014cayman.ky REGISTER NOW!) you’ll have the opportunity to see many more examples of how we are embracing technology to Engage Rotary – Change Lives.

Have an excellent Month and we look forward to seeing you in Cayman shortly, where we intend to Engage and Celebrate Rotary in a big way!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Jeremy Hurst, Governor 2013/14District 7020 -Rotary International

Why RLI???

--President J.D. Mosley-MatchettRotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise

You really should sign up for the Rotary Leadership Institute that will be held in Grand Cayman on the last weekend of this month.

Why?

Well, if you're relatively new to Rotary, it will help you better understand how our organization operates and how you personally fit into the grand scheme.

On the other hand, if you're a seasoned Rotarian, it will help you recapture the energy and fun that led you to be come a Rotarian. It will also allow you to compare and contrast how other clubs in District 7020 do things, providing fresh ideas and new ways ofthinking.

Plus, many clubs at least partially subsidize the cost of RLI. I know that my Sunrise club has always sponsored 50% of the cost for members who enroll. Perhaps your club does too, in an effort to groom future leaders and to strengthen ALL of the members through education and enlightenment!

So, here are the details for the upcoming RLI in Grand Cayman:

ROTARY CLUB OF NASSAU SUNRISE…submitted by Tanya Woodside

In recognition of March as Rotary’s Literacy Month, the members of the Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise organized a month long book drive to raise books for our on-going Reading Program at Willard Patton Pre-school. The club meets every Friday at the school to read to the kids in their classrooms, which is done at 12:20pm, shortly after the lunch period.

According to Principal Joanna Miller-Neely, the Reading Program has been a huge success with the kids, and that overtime this reading approach helps young children in the early development of their cognitive learning, listening and comprehensive skills. The kids enjoy the social interaction with our Rotarians and look forward to seeing us every week.

Having maintained this program for over three years, periodically, we have to change out the old books and our recent book drive was useful in this purpose to supply new books and to heighten the awareness of our program. We were especially pleased to receive support from the Rotary Club of East Nassau with their donation of several books for first-time readers, ages 3 and 5 years old. We appreciate their support and look forward to working with them again in the near future.

The pictures above were taken in one of the pre-school classrooms (Group 3) of the students along with their teachers, Principal Joanna Miller-Neely, President Tanya Woodside (Sunrise Club), President Phil Cummings (East Club) and Community Service Director Jeff (Sunrise Club). ROTARY CLUB OF SINT MAARTEN…submitted by Jeffrey Sochrin

PHILIPSBURG, SINT MAARTEN – March 4, 2014 – On Saturday, the Rotary Club of St. Maarten, in conjunction with its partner at Prime Distributors, and the St. Maarten Lions Club, with its partner at Cost-U-Less, concluded the Rotary has Heart campaign with a donation of US $4,400 to the New Start for Children Foundation. The donation was accepted by Mrs. Sally Benjamin.

The New Start for Children Foundation was established by Mrs. Benjamin and her husband Edward to help care for children in need. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin have been foster parents for more than 30 years and have cared for countless children without financial assistance from the government prior to Mr. Benjamin’s retirement. With the establishment of the foundation, they are now a formal

foster home caring for 19 children of which 5 are babies.

The Rotary has Heart Valentine’s campaign began during the month of February, with thecooperation of several businesses throughout the island, as an effort to raise funds to insure that “no child goes to bed hungry”.

Maria Buncamper-Molanus, President of the Rotary Club of St. Maarten, said “There is nothing more important than children, and making sure each child has a nutritious meal before bed is paramount to a healthy life.

The Rotary Club of St. Maarten is committed to improving lives of those children who are less

fortunate”.

Mrs. Buncamper continued, “This presentation of US $4,400 was extra ordinary as it was a joint presentation from both the Rotary Club of St. Maarten, the St. Maarten Lions Club, Prime Distributors and Cost-U-Less, both cooperate sponsors increasing the donation by 10%, for the purpose of purchasing food for the children residing at the home.

President of the St. Maarten Lions Club Claudio Buncamper added, “I am pleased to be able to support this joint project with the Rotary Club of St. Maarten. I was touched by the hard work the Benjamin Family is doing to make the lives of these children better and I am pleased, on behalf of the Lions Club, to contribute to this Foundation.

ROTARY E-CLUB OF NEGRIL, JAMAICA

The Travellers Beach Resort-sponsored donkey, ridden by Triston Noble, galloped to victory during the exciting finals of the Rotary Club of Negril's Ninth Annual Donkey Races and Fun Day last weekend.

The fun-filled affair was held recently at the grounds of the Wavz Beach in the resort town and saw scores of residents and tourists in attendance.

Patrons were entertained by music, games and various contests, food booths, a Ferris wheel, and a bounce-about for children. There were also spot prizes, a raffle, and gate prizes; however, it was the antics of some of the donkeys during the Donkey Fashion Parade and during the races that had patrons doubling over with laughter as many of the animals took charge of their riders.

Some of the donkeys shrugged off their jockeys -especially the inexperienced ones - while othersstood still and refused to move despite the jockeys urging them on.

TURNED BACK

At least four of the 18 donkeys that participated decided to stop with their riders still astride and turn back towards the starting line, evoking even more laughter.

Some paused to nibble on grass midway the race, even as their fellow competitors galloped past the finish line. Several other donkeys refused to move from the starting line long after their races had started, and even when the races had ended, they still had not moved. One multiple visitor to the resort town, American David Stairs of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, said he was happy to have attended the event and was very pleased with the experience.

"I appreciated the fact that everyone could come together and laugh and enjoy time together, especially for a great cause. The donkey race itself was hilarious and very unpredictable. I also enjoyed how everyone just walked around with a smile on their face. (It was) good times with new friends," he said.

FUN FOR EVERYONE

The Negril Donkey Races was being held for the ninth consecutive year. Over the years, it has attracted thousands of new and repeat patrons. It is one of the few events held in the town that target a general audience and not solely a party crowd.

Three sectional prizes were also awarded during the event. The Best Dressed Donkey award went to the donkey sponsored by Bourbon Beach, while the Worst Temper and Most Congenial Donkey awards went to donkeys sponsored by Charela Inn and Jackie's on the Reef, respectively.

ROTARY CLUB OF ST THOMAS…submitted by Daphne Harley

Don't Let them Drown!

Rotarians are committed to helping our Youth.

The Rotary Club of St. Thomas learned that another area of need important to our local community also pertains to Youth. John Vasbinder, ED & Head Coach of the St. Thomas Swimming Association, told Rotarians that although we are surrounded by water, the majority of our children cannot swim, and lack the skills & knowledge of what to do if they or a friend falls in the water.

The emphasis of their program is teaching students how to swim and water safety.

They teach students from grades 3 to adults. Over the years, STSA has developed swim teams which has produced excellent swimmers who have gone on to

compete in Regional, National, International competitions and at the Olympics. In fact, the VI has had a swimmer at each Olympics competition since 1972!

Presently there are over 70 students on their swim teams. The association's goal is to teach every 3rd grader how to swim, but lacks the financial resources to do so without the help of our local community. He can be contacted at [email protected]

March is Literacy Month

March is Literacy Month in the world of Rotary.

Clubs throughout the world focus extra resources on projects that improve literacy.

Literacy is important to Rotarians because research shows there are over 860 million illiterate adults and two-thirds of them are women. Millions more are functionally illiterate, lacking the reading and writing skills to effectively function.

The Rotary Club of St. Thomas continues its efforts to promote literacy through their signature programs EarlyAct at Sibilly School, and the Interact Clubs at BCB School, where Rotarians assist teachers in the classrooms, helping to give individualized attention to the students.

Everyone can do something to promote literacy; something as simple as reading to your children and having them read to you on a regular basis. Let's all be a part of this worthwhile cause!

ROTARY CLUB OF PORTMORE…submitted by Stephanie Harris

On February 14th the Rotary Club of Portmore (RCP) participated in the #RotaryHasHeart Project and joined in RI VIP Anne’s dream of Rotarians from Delaware to Trinidad uniting in a common cause to combat hunger.

We thought long and hard about how we wanted to approach this project and instead of choosing to prepare meals or to give a food donation, we opted to start vegetable gardens through partnerships with our Interact Club at Ascot High School and with the Braeton Police Youth Club that meet at Little One’s of Emmanuel Academy.

Vegetable gardens were started at both locations with seedlings donated by RCP which included tomato, callaloo, sweet pepper, cabbage, scotch bonnet pepper and bok choy. RCP also assisted with the preparation of the area and the planting of the crops.

The gardens will be maintained by both clubs with the assistance of RCP. The sun was out in all its glory, but it was heart-warming to

see both male and female students, some barefooted because they had removed their shoes to avoid it getting muddy, hard at work ploughing the area, wetting the soil and planting seedlings. We were even more impressed that they opted to miss an exciting school concert that was taking place to participate in this cause.

“Give a man a fish he’ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for life”.

This was what RCP set out to accomplish with this project. Both the Interact Club and the Braeton Police Youth Club will have to put in the time and effort needed to make their vegetable gardens successful. RCP is helping to create responsible students who will become productive adults. When asked what they intended to do with their first harvest they quickly responded to say they will be donating it to Children’s’ Home.

DONATIONS MADE TO TWO LOCAL AGENCIES

The Diabetes Foundation of St. Maarten (DFS) and the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) received donations from the Rotary Club of Sint Maarten-Mid Isle last Tuesday during their Club Meeting.

These were made possible through and impromptu “Heineken Regatta Parking Fundraiser” on March 9th, where Rotarians and other volunteers valet parked cars for persons attending the Regatta event at Kim Sha beach.

Rotarian Louis Wever organized the parking in such a way that there were mobile lighting and security guards, which made the event safe and secured. Rotary-Mid Isle President Sanjay Surtani presented DFS President Charlotte “Lotti” Peterson with brand new testers and strips, so they can continue with their weekly free testing.

Mrs. Peterson expressed much excitement in explaining the advantages that the modern testers have over the ones that DFS have been using recently.

We had a power outage this morning. My PC, laptop, TV, DVD, iPad, ham radio & my new surround sound music system were all shut down.

Then I discovered that my iPhone battery was flat, and to top it off it was raining outside, so I couldn't play golf.

I went into the kitchen to make coffee. Then I remembered that this also needs power, so I sat and talked with my wife for a few hours.

She seems like a nice person.

Cayman Brac Rotary Celebrates another Birthday

Thirty-three years ago on December 29, 1981, the Rotary Club of Cayman Brac received its charter from Rotary International and on March 26, 1982 this charter was presented to twenty six strong men who started the club in June 1981. The club traditionally celebrates charter night in the month of March and this year in keeping with tradition the club met on March 18th at the Alexander Hotel for another night of fun and fellowship.

Bar-B-Que ribs and stake with cocktails and soothing music brought back pleasant memories as Rotarian Lauriese Ashman related the good times and big projects this little club has achieved. The construction of the Stake Bay library, the Exercise trail and Life Course stations at West End Community Park, Annual Bike-A- Thon, funds to End Polio Now and the feeding programme in the Philippines are a few of the club projects. The club continues to focus on Rotary international programmes to include Peace and conflict resolution, literacy, Health and Sanitation, youth development, clean water and better health for all.

We were then treated with a short but very interesting slide show of life under the Cayman Brac waters by Veteran diver and underwater photographer Mr Mark Lightfoot. Mark paused at the Lionfish slide not only to show how pretty it looks but to emphasize the dangers of this predator to marine and plant life here and wished that much more could be done quickly to decrease its population. This slide was followed by a lively discussion on fourteen relevant and timely tips to success. Rotary Volunteer Pastor Thom French said in this discourse that there is need to want to be successful. It also involves waking- up on the same day you go to bed.

This evening came to a close with the cutting of the cake by Charter member Audley Scott and Honorary Rotarian Annie Rose Scott. Both members were presented with the Paul Harris Four Way Test medallion. Annie Rose received this award on behalf of her late husband and charter member Olney Junior Scott.

President Dhal and members of the club express sincere thanks to the management and staff of the Alexander Hotel and our presenters Mark Lightfoot and Pastor Tom French for making this evening another good time to cherish.

Cayman Brac Supports Polio Eradication Programme

Thousands of children living in a few remote areas in just three countries in the world are yet to be immunized against the polio virus. If these children are not reached quickly then many would become paralyzed or die and the spread of the virus can affect neighboring villages and countries.

Rotarians and partners have helped immunize more than 2 billion children against polio in 122 countries and have reduced the polio cases by 99 percent worldwide since its first project in 1979 . For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.

President Dhallchand Seeram and members of the Rotary Club of Cayman would like to thank all residents for their generous donations placed in the collection tins in the supermarkets, hospital and hotels. This is an ongoing project and this month your contribution of US $250. 00 was paid to the Polio Plus Foundation.

Because we are an E-Club, getting together physically with other Rotarians is not always the easiest thing to do. However, we did take advantage of a visit from Assistant Governor, Rebecca Low, recently when she visited the island of Anguilla.

AG Rebecca, who resides in St. Maarten, took the opportunity to officially pin our E-Club Charter Member, Lou deLagran, during her time on the island. Thank you AG Rebecca!

(Apologies to our own excellent AG Manoj Ramchandani, from Jamaica, but we are an E-Club after all! )

April 2014 34

We issued a press release in local newspaper to promote Rotary and World Understanding Month and our activities. The Press release stated:

The month of February holds value for each of us. It is celebrated as Black History Month, Reggae Month, the month of love with Valentine’s Day; not to mention the birthdays and anniversaries celebrated with friends and family.

For Rotarians worldwide, the month is also observed as World Understanding Month.

For the Rotary Club of Trafalgar New Heights, the month has been filled with activities including a health presentation on the Negative Effects of Sugar on our bodies by Health Coach Stacey Aiken, Health Coach, and an address by Member of Parliament, North Eastern St. Elizabeth, Raymond Pryce; as well as donations made in partnership with Jamaica AIDS for Life Support (JASL).

Mr. Pryce’s recent address to the gathering of Rotarians and their specially invited guests at the Liguanea Club spoke to the need for responsibility in our generation; and the recent increase in crime in his constituency.

According to Mr. Pryce, the expectation that our actions as a nation and as individuals have no impact on our future, or consequences are the core reason we are failing as a country. He took the opportunity to highlight the attempted murder of a student in the parish of St. Elizabeth by his classmates, who he was allegedly involved in illegal activities with.

Most recently, the Club, through their partnership with the JASL and contributions from CARIMED donated 80 sanitary kits to the homeless and needy in Kingston and surrounding areas under the Care Package Programme.

Marcus Irons, President of the Rotary Club of Trafalgar New Heights said “For February, we make an extra effort to take care of others and spread a message of health and awareness. The month is observed in all Rotary clubs as a way of promoting peace and of course what Rotary stands for- which is honesty, truth and good will.” For Rotarians, the month of February also includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held on 23 February 1905.

The polio eradication initiative (Rotary's Polio Plus Campaign), was the largest global public health initiative in history, which made a tremendous contribution to the promotion of peace – by building partnerships between the public and private sectors, by improving health infrastructure and monitoring the poorest areas, and by making it clear to all that we cannot have a healthy world if even one child is forgotten.”

A BIT OF ROTARY HISTORY

8 June, 1922 - 20 February, 2014Passed away peacefully, aged ninety-one after a lifetime of service

A.H. Royce Abbey, a former RI president and World War II hero who championed the inclusion of women members in Rotary clubs, died on 20 February. He was 91.

In addition to his term as RI president in 1988-89, he served as RI vice president and director, Foundation trustee chair, committee member and chair, International Assembly moderator, and district governor. Abbey, who joined Rotary in 1954, was a member of the Rotary Club of Essendon, Victoria, Australia.

“I will always remember Royce for his enthusiasm, his relentless energy, and ‘can do’ attitude,” says Clem Renouf, a fellow Australian Rotary member, who served as RI president in 1978-79. “He always said, ‘Rotary takes ordinary men and gives them extraordinary opportunities to do more with their lives than they had ever dreamed possible.’”

During his term as RI president, one of the most dramatic changes in Rotary’s history occurred when the Council of Legislation changed the constitutional documents to allow women membership to Rotary clubs.

Past RI President Charles Keller, who served with Abbey on the RI Board in 1975-76, remembers how Abbey embraced the landmark decision.

“Royce championed that decision,” says Keller. “He knew this would strengthen Rotary’s effectiveness worldwide. He was the perfect president for Rotary at the time. Rotary prospered during his term.”

Abbey was a recipient of The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service and its Distinguished Service Award. The presidential theme during Abbey’s term, Put Life Into Rotary – Your Life, urged Rotary members to make a personal commitment to their community and Rotary. “Royce lived his motto. He put his life into Rotary’s present and future and the organization thrived because of it,” says Keller.

Royal honors

Abbey’s commitment to community service was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II, who, on Australia Day in 1988, made him a Member of the Order of Australia. The next year he was chosen Victorian of the Year by the State of Victoria. Additionally, while serving in World War II, Abbey was awarded one of Australia’s highest military honors, the Distinguished Conduct Medal for an act of heroism and leadership.

Abbey was active in his church, enjoyed playing the guitar and table tennis, and became a YMCA leader. He was a life governor of the National Council of YMCAs of Australia, and a Patron of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. He was also a board member of the Greenvale Centre of the Aged.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, and his children Susan, David, Robyn, and Leigh. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in memory of Royce to The Rotary Foundation. Condolences can be sent to the Rotary Club of Essendon, P.O. Box 161, Essendon 3040, Australia.

This year, RI President-elect Gary Huang is asking all Rotarians to Light Up Rotary by participating in Rotary Days. The Rotary Days concept is a simple one: hold a fun, informal event in your community for the non-Rotary public
