Restricted fund grants help expand programsThanks to the generosity of our alumni donors, the following teachers and staff members received grants from CBNA’s Restricted Fund for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Wendi Colby and Stacy Sweet, Library: books for the Reluctant Reader Program

Paul Lacroix, Assisted Study: USB drives for the Assisted Study Program

Betty Lent, Drama: folding spotlight riser/platform for the Drama Program

Patricia Savage, Special Education: support for the Community-Based Instruction Program

Allen Unrein, Art: photography lighting system for the Art Department

“Two of our award-winning art students used the new portrait lighting system for their reference photos,” says CBNA art teacher Allen Unrein. “So the lights are doing exactly what I had hoped for, providing ideal lighting possibilities to support my students’ ideas and talents. I am so grateful for this grant that allowed my students access to this quality equipment. I’m sure the alumni who supported this grant will be pleased to know how successful the results of their support have been.”

CBNA senior Jessie Locke uses the Art Department’s new lighting equipment to help photograph senior Jaccanna Sourisak, who is sitting inside her three-dimensional painted box.

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is embarking on an exciting new pilot project to provide laptops to next year’s incoming freshman (the Class of 2014). The students will use the laptops throughout all four years of high school. Please help us (and these young people) with a contribution to the 2009/2010 CBNA Annual Campaign. Our goal is to contribute $25,000 toward the laptop pilot program. Your gift is tax deductible and supports Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s ongoing commitment to the education of its students.

Through your generosity, last year’s campaign raised more than $30,000. A portion of that money will be used to buy interac-tive white boards for the Academy’s classrooms. Your donations to the Annual Campaign also help support the grant program that is made available to CBNA faculty and staff each year. The grants cover the areas of Academics, Administration, Arts, Athletics and Vocational Education.

NOTE: We are no longer offering on-line giving via the CBNA web site. Only a few alumni took advantage of this option and the fees associated with this program were extremely high, making it cost prohibitive. We are still able to accept credit card payments through June 30 (MasterCard or Visa) on the pledge envelopes; one is enclosed in this issue for your use.

The Annual Campaign closes June 30, 2010. Please make checks payable to CBNA Development and send to 905 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood NH 03261. Thank you, alumni and friends of the Academy!

Dear Friends,As I mark my 30th year as headmaster of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, I can’t help

but be amazed at the changes that have taken place during my tenure here. In this issue we take a look back at some of the people who have helped shape the Academy’s history.

One of these individuals is featured on our cover. Annie Giles graduated from Coe’s Northwood Academy (as it was then called) in 1913 and went on to teach elementary school here in Northwood. Many of her students eventually became Coe-Brown alumni, but they never forgot their first teacher! Be sure to read Jim Pender’s (Class of 1958) touching remembrances of this remarkable woman.

Someone who played a significant role in our more recent history was George N. Geers, a member of the Class of 1945 and a former trustee of the Academy. George passed away on February 26 of this year and I count this as both a personal and professional loss. I had such admiration for Mr. Geers and valued both his service to the Academy and his wise counsel. He will be sorely missed.

We bid congratulations and farewell to the 160 members of the Class of 2010 and look forward to welcoming the 190 members of the freshman Class of 2014 later this summer. You may have heard about a project we are working on that, if successful, will provide each of these freshmen with a laptop computer for use throughout their four years at Coe-Brown. The 2009-2010 Annual Campaign supports this project and I thank those of you who have already contributed to this growing fund. If you would like to make a donation, it’s not too late and we can still use your help!

I hope you enjoy reading about some of the past and present accomplishments of our Coe-Brown community as we continue to prepare for an exciting and challenging future.

Sincerely,

David S. Smith

CBNA alumnus pays tribute to Annie Giles ’13The cover of this issue features a woman who played an important role in the

lives of many young people who grew up in Northwood in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. One person who credits Annie Giles, CBNA Class of 1913, with having a significant impact on his life is James Pender ’58.

“Mrs. Giles was my teacher at my elementary school in Northwood,” says Jim. “I was the child of a single mother and we didn’t have much money. Mrs. Giles took an interest in me, and she would have me come to her house to do odd jobs such as raking leaves and mowing the lawn. That way, I had some pocket money for a new shirt or pair of shoes, whatever I needed.

“But Mrs. Giles didn’t stop there. She would take me up to Montgomery’s Store in Pittsfield so I could do my shopping. She knew I would not be able to get there otherwise.”

Jim Pender went on to head up Rockingham Electric, a successful electrical supply company headquartered in Newington, New Hampshire. But he never forgot the woman who helped him along the way, and established a scholarship in Annie Giles’ name at Coe-Brown.

“I wanted to give back in a way that would pay tribute to someone who gave so much to me,” Jim says.

sauce each year. We also have berries and a pretty big vegetable garden. I start most of the plants indoors under hoop houses before transplanting outdoors in the garden,” says Jana. “With the long winters in New England you have to get a jump on your vegetables. We have a root cellar system so we put up most of our vegetables and are able to enjoy them year round.

“Right now we are self sustaining, but I hope to start doing farmers markets in the future,” Jana says. “I enjoy meeting the people who come to the farm for eggs and other produce and I would like to open up the farm at some point to help educate people about where their food comes from.

“We work with the farm-to-school initiative at my daughter’s school by donating eggs and vegetables and we also helped cook all day at our local harvest supper. This is all part of the education process.”

Jana, her husband, and their son and daughter live in an unusual house that they built themselves. Their straw bale house is insulated with bales of straw and took three years to construct.

“From the outside it looks like a regular wooden house,” says Jana. “On the inside we have natural clay plaster on the walls. We live off the grid, with solar panels for power. This summer we hope to install a wind generator.”

Jana’s lifestyle is an extension of her personality and the values she developed in childhood and beyond. A self-claimed hands-on learner, she believes Coe-Brown’s senior project structure is more beneficial than exams.

According to Jana, “If a student challenges him or herself with a meaningful project, it is an amazing experience.”

Editor’s note: Jana and her family welcome visitors to their farm in Newport, Vermont. She can be reached at [email protected] and, yes, her computer is solar powered. If you’d like to see the bear skeleton she reconstructed for her senior project, it’s still on display in Jean Cumings’ science classroom!

Any Coe-Brown alumnus who graduated within the past 15 years or so knows that senior year is a flurry of activity, mainly due to the requirements of the senior portfolio project. One graduate who survived to tell the tale is Jana Paradis Lovejoy, who graduated in 1995. Her senior project was fairly unusual and she has managed to weave what she learned from the experience into her daily life.

“As a kid I was curious about how the body functions,” says Jana. “I was always dissecting things and studying the parts that make up the whole. I was also someone who was in tune with nature and interested in the natural world.

“When it came time for my senior project at Coe-Brown, I knew what I wanted to do. I worked with New Hampshire’s Fish and Game Department to acquire the carcass of a bear that had been put down as a problem animal. They delivered it to me frozen and I removed the fur and meat. I took apart the body, drilling holes in the bones to drain, boiling them clean and hanging them to dry for weeks. Then I slowly put the skeleton back together again.”

After high school Jana headed for Lyndon State College in Vermont to study sports medicine. “I took a lot of anatomy classes and even worked on a human cadaver,” she says.

But a change of heart promoted her to transfer to Colorado University in Boulder where she began pursuing a degree in biology. “My dream was to study veterinary care,” says Jana, “but the schooling was too competitive.”

After college Jana started her own landscaping business and she and her husband eventually moved to Vermont where they started a farm.

“We grow all our own food,” Jana says, “and we are beginning to provide food for other people, as well. In Vermont you can sell up to 500 chickens legally but we raise beef only for ourselves since we are not state certified. We have 100 laying hens and sell about 10 dozen eggs a week. We have a plucking machine for the chickens that we made ourselves—my husband has to pedal a bicycle to power it!”

In addition to the chickens and their beef cows, the Lovejoys raise sheep and pigs, as well as turkeys for Thanks-giving. They will soon be raising tilapia, a freshwater fish, in hoop houses on their 216-acre property. Fifty of the acres are open pasture for the cows and fruit and vegetable gardens take up another sizable portion.

“We have wild apple trees and we make cider and apple

grade when she moved to Northwood. “I was really excited that they had volleyball camp and I

went to it every year until I was a freshman at CBNA, where I ultimately earned the position of starting setter for the varsity team. I also attended a couple CBNA tennis camps before coming to the Academy.”

Nottingham fifth-grader Davio DeLuca attended his first basketball camp at Coe-Brown last summer. He has signed up to attend the camp again this summer and is already looking forward to it.

“The coaches are really fun,” says Davio. “They all play on Coe-Brown’s basketball team and they’re so good. I can’t believe how fast they are. They taught us a lot of new drills and helped us with our skills. I think I played better on my Nottingham team this year after going to basketball camp at Coe-Brown.”

“My son attends Coe-Brown’s summer basketball camp and loves it,” says Renee Burke of Strafford. “From my perspective, the camp is a great value and the coaches and counselors really care

4 Visions — Spring 2010

Coe-Brown’s academic year may end in June but the Academy’s campus continues to be a bustling, active place throughout the summer. Current students pursuing make-up work in academics attend summer school through the end of July, contractors complete a variety of maintenance projects on the Academy’s buildings and grounds all summer long and the sounds of happy campers can be heard in the gymnasiums and playing fields around campus.

These campers are part of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s program of sports camps offered to area children. CBNA Athletic Director Matt Skidds says these camps are a great way to connect with the community and they provide a valuable and affordable service.

“We welcome any child who wants to learn about the various sports, who wants to work hard to improve their skills or who is just looking for a positive camp experience,” says Mr. Skidds. “You don’t have to be an accomplished athlete to attend a Coe-Brown summer sports camp.”

Coe-Brown uses its student athletes to help run the summer camps and Mr. Skidds believes that it’s good for the younger kids to see the students in this role.

“We have lots of great role models here at Coe-Brown—coaches, teachers, administrators—and we continue that tradition by offering our students the opportunity to grow and become leaders themselves,” he says. “It’s a tested model and it works well.”

Coe-Brown senior Kaitlyn Doig is one of the student athletes who worked with the summer camp program. Last year she ran the girls volleyball summer camp for her senior project. She says that she’s always been passionate about sharing her knowledge of volleyball in order to help others improve and enjoy the sport as much as she does.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to attend many different camps and play for many different coaches over the past 14 years, so I wanted to show the kids how much fun volleyball can be,” Kaitlyn says. “It was really rewarding to see the smiles on the campers’ faces at the end of each day. That told me that I had reached my goal as camp director and that the camp was a success.”

Kaitlyn helped run the camp for two years before taking over as director under the guidance of Coach Kristen Miller. She began attending the CBNA summer camps in fifth CBNA faculty members and camp coaches Jamie Johnson ’84 (left) and David Daigle

with campers William Fletcher (left) and Jack Fletcher.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE ACADEMYPoetry Out Loud

At Coe-Brown’s first annual Poetry Out Loud finals, senior Christian Leavitt became school champion and junior Jessica Goudreault, runner-up. Finalists also competing included senior Michael Dodge, sophomore Samantha Lepecier and freshman Henry Warburton. The school-wide finals were held on January 20 in an evening framed by two student-directed, one-act plays. Ms. Anna Hazen and Ms. April Pagnani acted as coordinators, with Mrs. Rita Dana, Mr. Antony DePalma, Ms. Caryn Lasky, Mrs. Elizabeth Lent and Mrs. Beth Mennelle volunteering to pilot the project in their classrooms.

The competition, presented in partnership with the New Hampshire State Council for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition. These finalists in the school competition were chosen from among classroom champions during late December and early January in participating English classes and the Public Speaking class.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. Beginning at the classroom level, winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to regional and state competition and, ultimately, to the National Finals in Washington, DC. Nearly 300,000 students across the country took part in Poetry Out Loud in 2008-2009.

At Coe-Brown, students recited works they selected from an anthology of more than 600 classic and contemporary poems. Judges evaluated student performances on criteria including articulation, evidence of understanding, level of difficulty, and accuracy. Teachers introduced poetry recitation in the classroom using materials created by the NEA and the Poetry Foundation, including a standards-based teacher’s guide, a website, a ‘best performances’ DVD, and a CD featuring poetry recitations by well-known actors and writers such as Anthony Hopkins and Rita Dove.

Christian Leavitt advanced to the western New Hampshire regional contest in March at New England College, where he did very well but was not selected to advance to the state competition. The English teachers who participated all agreed that the program was a great addition to their classrooms and plan to participate again next year.

CBNA teacher volunteers in HaitiDuring February vacation Mrs. Jean

Cumings, biology and zoology teacher at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, volunteered with Project Medishare in Port Au Prince, Haiti, joining her husband, Tom Cumings, who had been volunteering in Haiti since the earthquake occurred. Project Medishare, partnering with the University of Miami Global Institute, operates the University of Miami Field Hospital. Donations from staff, students, families, the CBNA Senior Class and the senior portfolio project by Jessie Locke raised more than $2,925. This money was

taken to the Wings of Hope Orphanage in Port Au Prince, part of the Hearts with Haiti organization. Donations of medical and dental supplies, as well as clothing, were delivered with the money raised. Tents, donated by CBNA staff, were taken to provide homes for a few of the many families left homeless by the earthquake. The needs of these people will continue long after the stories have left the media. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at www.heartswithhaiti.org or www.projectmedishare.org.

Coe-Brown receives fourth sportsmanship award

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy unveiled its newest award to the entire student body at an assembly this past fall. Athletic Director Matt Skidds announced that Coe-Brown received the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Class I Sportsmanship Award for the 2008-2009 school year.

The most prestigious honor awarded by the NHIAA, the Sportsmanship Award is voted on by all schools who participate in Class I athletics. It honors Coe-Brown’s athletes, coaches and spectators for their conduct and sportsmanship during the past year’s athletic season. This is the fourth consecutive year that Coe-Brown has been the Class I honoree, and Mr. Skidds emphasized the role the entire school played in earning this award. It is a great honor for CBNA to win this award, since there are only four schools throughout the state, one for each size classification, chosen each year to be honored for outstanding sportsmanship.

Coe-Brown chorus featured on “Celebrate America” special

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy chorus, under the direction of David Deardorff, performed with nationally acclaimed composer Tim Janis in his “Celebrate America” musical special, which aired on New Hampshire Public Television in March. Buses rolled in from

CBNA faculty member Jean Cumings with a young girl from the Wings of Hope Orphanage in Haiti.

Visions — Spring 2010 7

We’ve all heard the frightening statistics about alcohol and drug use among teenagers, as well as other risky behaviors that teens engage in during these tumultuous years. Under the direction of the Coe-Brown Board of Trustees, a group of community members and leaders has come together to form SYNC: Supporting Youth iN Communities. This coalition seeks to reduce risky behaviors in young people and build effective support systems for them. They do this by building positive relationships in local communities and promoting strong families and healthy individuals.

Gary Faucher of Northwood, a father of two Coe-Brown graduates and a current CBNA sophomore, acts as facilitator for the SYNC Coalition.

“SYNC grew out of a long-range strategy of the board of trustees aimed at preventing substance abuse in kids,” says Gary. “We received a start-up grant from the New Hampshire Department of Education and began by gathering community leaders from the area: Coe-Brown staff members, trustees and administrators, the local school boards from Northwood, Strafford, Nottingham and Barrington, guidance counselors, local law enforcement personnel, parents, community members and students.

“What came out of our initial meetings was that we wanted to focus more on supporting the kids and helping them become responsible and productive adults. We agreed that we couldn’t wait until our students entered high school but needed to begin promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging better choices at the elementary school level.

across the state, pulling together 500 students from New Hampshire high school music programs. The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy students did an exceptional job singing “Danny Boy,” with senior Michael Dodge providing lead vocals.

“Celebrate America” was created by Mr. Janis to spotlight our nation’s youth and pull communities together in a celebration of music that uplifts and inspires.

CBNA students participate in All-State Art Festival and Congressional Art CompetitionThe CBNA Art Department is pleased to announce that CBNA junior John Jarvis has been selected to participate in the 2010 New

Hampshire Art All-State Festival at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. John was nominated by his art teacher, Scott Chatfield. Students were instructed to develop an artwork that reflects Henri Matisse’s (1869-1954) quote, “Exactitude is not truth.” The New Hampshire Art All-State Festival, now in its 12th year, is an education program for talented high school juniors that provides an opportunity for students to expand their creativity and critical thinking by working with professional artists and peers in a collaborative fine art studio setting.

The following CBNA students participated in the 29th annual Congressional Art Competition (An Artistic Discovery sponsored by Carol Shea-Porter’s Second Congressional District): Erika Magner ’10, Jacanna Sourisak ’12, Moria Geary ’11, Sarah Fenerty ’10, Justin Loy ’10 and Jenna Moore-Kulp ’12.

Erika Magner’s Self-Portrait took top honors and she will have her work exhibited for a year in the tunnel at the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Erika will be flown to Washington to attend a special reception later this summer. This is the fourth Best of Show awarded to a CBNA student over the past six years. Previous honorees are Heather Baker ’05, Kaitlin Cecchetti ’07 and Alyssa Pittera ’10. In addition, Jenna Moore-Kulp ’12 received a certificate to attend a course at the Currier Art Center in Manchester and Jacanna Sourisak ’12 received a certificate to attend a course at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. Congratulations to all of these talented students.

We asked each other: Can we work together with our feeder towns to promote positive messages before these kids reach Coe-Brown? The issue is not simply using drugs and alcohol, but why they do this and what support systems are missing in their lives that leads them down this path.”

The SYNC Coalition ultimately envisions a system of supporting youth that begins in kindergarten and continues all the way through twelfth grade. Toward that end, SYNC has begun offering a series of community events. During the past academic year the SYNC Coalition hosted motivational/educational presentations including Randy Judkins, Building Self-Esteem; Stephen Andrew, Communicating with Teens; and Detective Cory McDonald, Internet Safety. On May 3 SYNC held an annual meeting open to all community members to introduce SYNC and it mission.

According to Gary, each event attracted about 40 community members, and each event included a new group of people. Overall, over 100 new community members were involved in SYNC activities and feedback has been positive. The SYNC Coalition is looking ahead to next year and is always looking for more community participation. Everyone is welcome at SYNC meetings and events.

If you would like to become involved in the SYNC Coalition or would like more information about upcoming programs, contact Gary Faucher at [email protected].

But let’s turn the clock back. When I met them, they were teenage girls who were living on the farm. What makes these two different was they worked the farm—plowing gardens, putting in hay, feeding the cows and taking care of the horses—instead of cleaning the house. (Some of helping Mom in the house, they did.) You might say this work was all done with horses and by hand. They also knew how to harness and hook up the horses to the farm equipment.

Class of 1948So many good friendships have been formed at CBNA! Imagine 62 years later and we all remain friends.

It was good to see Jimmy Gray and Charlie Mattson at our 60th and we have hopes to see everyone at our 62nd in June! Arthur Nutter attended the reunion last year just a short time after hip surgery. Romayne Milligan Jackson is recuperating from a hospital visit and is busy with her family.

How many people do you know that have a daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren who have been invited by the President of the United States (George W. Bush) for a personal visit and photo shoot in the Oval Office? Gordon Fogg has!

I want to thank all our CBNA friends for the calls, cards, visits and kind words during a very difficult time. George (George Geers, Class of 1945) loved to see his friends and tell stories of “The Good Old Days” in Northwood. He never forgot them.

CLASS NOTESCoe-Borwn Northwood Academy

As for school, they were good students and good at sports. Coe-Brown won many of their games; they had a good team!

After graduation they went to work in the world: a shoe factory for 15 years and a few other jobs. This is the way things were in those days. Etta drove a school bus for Dail Transportation for 30 years; Joyce went to work in a hardware store and is still there. They have improved the farm by using modern equipment.

Etta has since passed away and Joyce continues to work the farm with the help of the family. This is a very small look at the type of lives they lived. These are the kind of people Coe-Brown is still putting out in the world. In 2010 they are good, strong people and that is because of good teachers and leadership, taught at Coe-Brown.

Millie Pectle Wolak has moved to Melbourne, Florida.

It is with sadness that Marion Pettingill’s daughter Cathy Young ’92 informed us that her mother passed away in November.

Daughter Stacy and her husband Adam have Meredith (age 10) and Owen (age 7). Son Andy and his wife Lisa had their first baby, A.J. on June 1, 2009. The most important thing to know is they are all healthy and happy. They keep busy with racquetball, jobs, grandchildren, and friends. Life is good.

John restores antique cars and volunteers as security for their children’s school sports functions, where their daughter is a varsity cheerleader. John enjoys playing in a band a few times a month, playing his guitar, and having fun with XBox Rockband with his son! He and his family live in Cocoa, Florida.

Cathy Calef and husband William recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary! We live in the Lehigh Acres/Fort Myers, FL area. We are proud parents of three grown children and a son-in-law; daughter Kristyl L.C. (Chadbourn) Brum, Class of ’93 and her husband Jim; sons Justin T.C. Chadbourn, Class of ’95; and Josiah W.R. Class of 1983 (no class agent)Kelley (Blier) Maloney is married to John Maloney, Class of ’74. They have two children, daughter Ashley and son Patrick. Kelley is a monitor technician at the local hospital, where she has worked for 14 years; she loves her job! She and her family live in Cocoa, Florida.

Class of 1984 (no class agent)On April 25, 2009, the class of 1984 got together to celebrate a 25th reunion that was held at the home of Sandra (Nelson) ’84 and Bill Johnson ’85. Twenty-four of the 56 graduates attended the gathering, several traveling from New York and as far as California. In attendance were two prominent faculty members: Mr. Thomas Hall, the class advisor, and Mr. Mark Yeaton, physical education teacher.

The reunion started off with a tour of Coe Brown, given by Jamie Johnson ’84, which included each building and the athletic fields. Wow, how times have changed in the past 25 years! Though we all have great memories of our years at CBNA, we are sure the students today know how fortunate they are to be attending a school that has so much to offer, from academics to sports, arts and music to trades. And a cafeteria to eat lunch in, with an all-inclusive deck? We don’t know how we survived eating our lunches on the gymnasium bleachers. But we are living proof that CBNA provided us with what we needed to make it in the world.

Following the tour, having worked up quite the appetite and thirst, we found our way to the Johnson homestead where we enjoyed food, drink, and shared stories and pictures into the wee hours of the morning. Some of us have changed more than others; okay, maybe we had to take a second glance in order to recognize some of our classmates. For some of us it had been since graduation day while others have maintained friendships they established while students here two and a half decades ago. Either way, for those who lost touch, we picked up where we left off making it hard to believe 25 years had passed.

We do know one thing: We are not waiting another 25 years to enjoy another reunion. Stay tuned for more fun to come within the next five years! A special thank you is extended to Sandra and Bill for opening up their new home to the alumni; also a thank you to the reunion committee for planning this memorable event.

This year we have been fortunate to get in touch with most of our classmates and update contact information. Please take a moment to let me know of any email address changes you may have had recently, so I can keep you in the loop for upcoming class events. Also, we are still in need of contact information for the following classmates: Ken Gagnon, Anne Gilbert, Gus Marden, Arthur Marquis, Bill Miller, Crystal Pouliot, Kelly Stevens, and Shane Stevens.

On a more somber note, we were saddened to hear of the loss of one of our own former classmates this past year. We lost Maurice Doubleday in December 2009. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and he will surely be missed by his high school friends.

I hope 2010 brings you all good health and fond memories!

Farewell George Geers: Coe-Brown alumnus and former trustee

The Coe-Brown community lost one of its distinguished members recently. George Nils Geers ‘45 passed away on February 26 after a long illness. George’s wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Young Geers, is a member of the Class of 1948.

George’s love for Coe-Brown Northwood Academy was demonstrated in many ways, including his tenure as a trustee of the academy during the 1980s. He was later named trustee emeritus in acknowledgment of his lengthy service. He kept in close contact with his fellow members of the Class of 1945 and was a fixture at the annual CBNA Alumni Banquet.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, George pursued a degree at Boston’s Wentworth Institute and enjoyed a lengthy career as a mechanical engineer, heavy construction equipment dealer and developer. He was active in local politics, serving on the Concord, New Hampshire, City Council. George was a fan of antique cars and was active in several classic automobile clubs, including the Pierce Arrow Club, the Buick Club of America and the Profile Antique Auto League.

George’s family has established a fund in his name at Coe-Brown. Donations may be sent to the George Geers Fund, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, 907 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood 03261.

Thank you for all you have done for Coe-Brown, Mr. Geers. You will be missed.

George Geers (second from left) remained lifelong friends with his fellow members of the CBNA Class of 1945: Warren “Pete” Guptill, Bob Bailey and Dick Johnston.

CBNA Alumni Association bylaws proposed for amendment on June 12, 2010by Anne Bailey, Class of 1977

The CBNA Alumni Association Executive Board has been hard at work over the past year updating the bylaws and recruiting new board members, as well as cultivating relationships with the Board of Trustees, the CBNA Guidance Office and the director of development and alumni affairs. We are excited about becoming more visible at school functions and on the CBNA web site, as well as reviving Alumni Association interest and membership. As our proposed mission statement now reads:

The purpose of the Alumni Association is to provide a lifelong relationship of assistance and benefits to CBNA and support the efforts to prepare students to be responsible, caring and contributing members of the global society. The objectives will be to:

n Strengthen ties and contacts between the Academy and its Alumnin Increase contact and fellowship among Alumnin Support student activities at the Academyn Support the quality educational programs offered at the Academyn Assist the Academy in obtaining financial resources to support its missionn Provide historical information about the Academy and maintain school memorabilia

Other proposed bylaw changes include revising the Dissolution of the Association so that in the event of the dissolution of the Association, or in the event it shall cease to carry out the objects and purposes of the bylaws, all the business, property and assets of the Association shall go and be distributed to Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. Membership and Executive Board duties changed to include the President to be the second signatory and the Treasurer to be first signatory on checking and investment accounts. The Vice President term changed from one year to two years. The Corresponding Secretary will coordinate news releases, with approval from the Executive Board, prior to any news release or publication. The Scholarship Chair will be a Regular Member and Executive Board Officer. We will ensure a minimum balance of $80,000 remains in the scholarship fund, which was increased from $50,000. Associate Members will have voting authority; however they cannot hold an officer position.

We propose that the annual newsletter be included in CBNA Visions magazine and invitations to the Annual Meeting and Banquet be mailed to alumni through the CBNA Development and Alumni Affairs Office. We have changed the mailing address of the Association to the CBNA address of 907 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood, NH 03261. We added the positions of Historical Preservation Chair and Director of Development and Alumni Affairs. The Treasurer is to keep the Association in good standing with the New Hampshire Secretary of State Office and Internal Revenue Service. We propose that two signatures be required on any Association transactions over $500, and two-thirds vote of the Executive Board be required to move any bank or investment accounts.

The proposed amended bylaws will be available at the June 12, 2010 Annual Meeting and Banquet, at http://www.coebrown.org/Alumni1/AlumniAssociation.htm, or by contacting Anne Bailey ’77 at 603-942-1285.
