The Fundamental Question of Ethics is:
"What should I do?"
"How should I act?"
Ethics is supposed to provide us
with "moral principles" or
universal rules that tell us
what to do.

It is derived from latin word “Virtus”.
Virtues are habits, i.e. once they are acquired, they become characteristics of a person.
A virtue is not just a feeling.
A virtue is not just doing a given action on a given occasion.

“ “ Good Actions Comes From Good Actions Comes From Good Person”Good Person”
Virtue Ethics studies what makes the character traits of people (e.g., bravery, greediness) virtuous or vicious.
Sometimes, however, it is described as an alternative approach to ethics altogether.
Virtue ethicists don’t ignore actions, but regard them as outgrowths of a person’s character. The notion of character is the morally more important concept.
Focus is on what sort of people we should strive to be, not what things should we do on individual occasion.

Advantage of Virtue Ethics
Moral Motivation – certain situations are handled by an appeal to virtue rather than right action or duty.– Example: Visiting a friend in the
hospital– Virtue: Friendship, Love, Loyalty
Doubts about the ideal of impartiality – relationships with family and friends are difficult to account for in other moral approaches.

Criticism of Virtue Ethics
Makes the morality of individuals depend on luck?
a) Modern psychology tells us that character traits depend largely on genetics and early environment.
b) But doesn’t being moral just depend on being the person you can be in the situations you are in.
It Fails to give the guidance on how we are act? ( When a women is trying to decide whether to have an abortion, she may ask a friend “What should I Do?

To begin, A PLATOON is on a rescue mission. Two members of the platoon are trapped on a hill and under fire.
Both soldiers are seriously wounded; within a few hours, they will be dead.
Between the platoon and the two soldiers is a minefield, which the platoon must breach or go around if they are to get to the trapped soldiers in time.
As the platoon leader ponders his options, he notices a civilian picking his way through the minefield. Obviously, he knows where the mines are.

Conclusion
The lieutenant detains the civilian, but the man refuses to lead the platoon through the minefield.
The lieutenant offers several enticements to get the man to cooperate, but the man continues to refuse.
There is no way he is going back through that minefield. The lieutenant must make a decision that he had hoped to avoid.
There are rules for situations like this, but if he follows them, good men will die.
