Advising Appointments – Best Practice
Advising Availability: consider having appointment times during typical
“lunch hour” and after hours
Documents: upload and store soft copies of advising documents for
online sharing. i.e. resume and cover letter examples, job descriptions,
handouts
Have a back-up plan: phone, on-line chat
Communicate in advance: Send the student the proper URL, your user
ID, and/or calendar invitation
FERPA: Make sure you are aware what is and is not compliant
Workshops
Workshops: Technology Options
Workshops generally entail:
Single Presenter: Resumes,
Interviewing, Negotiation
Panels: Alumni, industry or topic
specific
Employer: Information Session,
tech talk

Workshops – Best Practices Instructions: make sure participants know the best way to ask
questions (“raise hand,” chat box, wait until Q&A)
Record & Repeat: record your sessions so you can share with students that could not attend. Repeat any questions you get from the crowd.
Chat moderator: if you stream a live workshop, have a second person help moderate the online chat
Test: run a test with the microphone and video before hosting
Tech Issues: be aware of issues such as lagging, microphone/video failure, video transfer issues
Creating Video Tutorials

*Hint: strategically find strong metatags
• Look for a popular YouTube video of your choice (i.e. interviewing, resumes, etc.)
• Right click and select “View Page Source”
• Then use “Ctrl+ F” and search for “keywords”
1. Create clear consistent titles
2. Consider custom thumbnail
3. Listed v Unlisted
4. If listed- create metatags
Building a Career ResourcesSite using LMS
Considerations for
Building a Site
Do you have access to an LMS
(Learning Management System)?
What type of content do your
students need access to all the
time?
Do you have time to build out a site?
Do you have content already written?
Tips
Index your content so students can find what they seek
1 Address your frequently asked questions
2 On each page link back to your main
page
3 Use an informal voice not a formal academic
voice
4 Use outside resources links to support your content
56 Use a consistent page format
