Richard Branson(founder of Virgin Atlantic)

Branson was born in Blackheath, London. His father was barrister Edward James Branson (10 March 1918 – 19 March 2011). His grandfather, the Right Honourable Sir George Arthur Harwin Branson, was a judge of the High Court of Justice and a Privy Councillor. Branson was educated at Scaitcliffe School (now Bishopsgate School) until the age of thirteen. He then attended Stowe School until the age of sixteen. Branson has dyslexia and had poor academic performance as a student, but later discovered his ability to connect with others. On one of Branson's last days at school, his headmaster, Robert Drayson, told him he would either end up in prison or become a millionaire.

At the age of sixteen his first business venture was a magazine called Student. In 1970, he set up a mail-order record business. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records, later known as Virgin Megastores. Branson's Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980s, as he set up Virgin Atlantic and expanded the Virgin Records music label.

Branson formed Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984, launched Virgin Mobile in 1999, and Virgin Blue in Australia (now named Virgin Australia) in 2000. He was ninth in the Sunday Times Rich List 2006, worth slightly more than £3 billion

Virgin Atlantic Airways

Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. (running as Virgin Atlantic) is an airline that is based in the United Kingdom. Virgin Atlantic is owned by 2 companies, Virgin Group and Singapore Airlines. Virgin Atalntic flies airplanes from its main base or hub at London Heathrow Airport and London Gatwick Airport to many places like the USA, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. Virgin Atlantic flew 5.1 million people in 2007 and made a profit of £46.8 million in 2007.

Where Virgin Atlantic Flies

Over 75% of Virgin Atlantic's flights fly from London Heathrow Airport. Most of the rest fly from London Gatwick Airport, Manchester Airport or Glasgow Airport.

Virgin flies to nine cities in the USA, nine cities in the Caribbean, five cities in Africa, five cities in Asia, and to Sydney in Australia.

Virgin Atlantic has been talking to Lufthansa about BMI. Lufthansa has said that it wants to sell BMI because it is not making enough money. BMI is part of the Star Alliance (a group of airlines that help each other), but Virgin Atlantic is not. If Virgin Atlantic buys bmi, they may join Star Alliance. This means that they can compete against British Airways on the London Heathrow Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport route. British Airways is part of oneworld (a rival airline group).

Airplanes

Virgin Atlantic owns 25 Airbus A340 aeroplanes and 13 Boeing 747 aeroplanes. It also has three orders: one order is for 6 Airbus A380 aeroplanes, another order is for 10 Airbus A330 aeroplanes and the last order is for 15 Boeing 787 aeroplanes. The 787 aircraft should be delivered first in the year 2011. The A380 aircraft should be delivered in the year 2013. The A330 aircraft should be delivered in 2011.

Virgin Atlantic used to have some other aircraft too. It used to own 5 Airbus A320s, 3 Airbus A321s, 1 Boeing 747-100, 22 Boeing 747-200s and 4 Vickers Viscounts. Virgin Atlantic's first plane was a Boeing 747-200.

Inside the Airplanes

Virgin Atlantic uses three different classes on their aeroplanes:

Economy Premium Economy Upper Class

Economy Class

Economy class is the standard class on Virgin Atlantic aircraft. It is the cheapest part of the airplane to travel in. Passengers usually get a free meal, some drinks and a bag with gifts in like a toothbrush. The seats in this class have a maximum pitch of 31 in, but this depends on what airplane you go in.

Premium Economy Class

Passengers that use Premium Economy have their own check-in area, get to board before Economy passengers, a drink before the flight, get their own cabin crew and get a better seat. The seat it wider and has a larger pitch.

In November 2006, Virgin made a new seat. It is wider than the old one and has a plug for laptops. It is being put on all planes and now, all Airbus A340s and all Boeing 747s that fly from London Heathrow Airport have the new seats.

Upper Class

Upper Class is the name for Virgin Atlantic's business class. They do not have a first class service. Virgin says the seats are the biggest lie flat beds on any business class (it is 202 cm long and 84 cm wide), but Air Canada and Singapore Airlines have said this too. The seats have plugs for laptops and iPods.

Upper Class passengers can also have their own chauffeur, drive-thru check-in, and their own security points at some airports, access to the Virgin Clubhouse (a special VIP area, with a bar and seats), a larger menu for in-flight meals and a bar that passengers can stand up or sit down at in flight.

In-flight Entertainment

All the seats on all the aircraft have screens in the back of the seats to provide entertainment for passengers. Most airplanes have a newer system where the passengers can choose what they want to watch called V: Port. Older systems called "Odyssey" and "Super Nova" just offers different channels for the passengers to pick from. The screens on the older systems are also smaller.

Covering letters are a great chance for candidate to demonstrate to them why they're the right person for the job. Quite often this is the first thing they read.

Assessment:-

So once candidate get the good news that their application has been successful. Virgin use a wide variety of assessment methods, because they hire all sorts of different people to do different kinds of jobs. Candidate can rest assured that each assessment method they'll be using is carefully designed around the requirements of each role. They'll give candidate the opportunity to show them all the necessary experience, qualities and skills they need.

Pre-employment screening

At Virgin Atlantic, it's important they candidate fun, work hard and enjoy life, but their number one priority is the safety and security of their staff and customers. The nature of the airline industry means they need to be very thorough, so the referencing standards that they follow meet and in a number of areas, exceed the standards laid down by the UK Department for Transport.

Once they've offered someone a job, they start their pre-employment referencing process, which a specialist external agency helps them to manage. If candidate have been successful in getting a position, full details of what they require for referencing will be provided in candidate offer letter, but here's a quick overview of what candidate can expect.

Referencing

Candidate will be sent an email inviting candidate to go to a website where candidate will be asked to provide their career history, education details and everything they have been doing over the last five years.

Basic disclosure

All new staff are required to get a Basic Disclosure Certificate, also known as a Criminal Record Check or CRC. When candidate are registering on-line for your pre-employment screening, candidate will be asked to pay a fee of £25 by debit or credit card to cover the cost of candidate Basic Disclosure.

Security interview

(for Airside Pass Holders only i.e. Cabin Crew, Pilots, Engineering & Airport staff)

The UK airport authorities (BAA, MAG and GIP) require that all staff who need an airside ID go through a security interview. Virgin Atlantic will conduct the interview, which will take place as one of the final stages of your recruitment process.

Virgin launches glass-bottomed plane

Im thrilled to announce that Virgin has created another world-first with the introduction of the technology required to produce the worlds first glass-bottomed plane. This technological innovation coincides with the start of Virgin Atlantic Airways first ever domestic service to Scotland.

In 1984 we started the wonderful airline that is Virgin Atlantic. I am incredibly proud of yet another aviation breakthrough which has been years in the making. I cant wait to experience the first flight for myself with my family and other natural born explorers.

2012 was a year of celebrating what is brilliant about Great Britain and Im excited that in 2013 we are continuing this uplifting spirit by developing an experience that will enable Little Red passengers to appreciate the beauty of the British landscape. And with an unrivalled view of Scotland I hope this gives Scottish tourism an even bigger boost.

We hope to trial the glass bottom technology with other Virgin airlines in time and have asked other Virgin companies to support this innovative trial and launch our new domestic Scottish route. This really is a team effort from all corners of Virgin.

The Future Travel Experience events are renowned for being the place where airlines and airports launch forward-thinking, passenger-focused solutions, and at FTE Europe 2014, Ian Baigent-Scales, Virgin Atlantic’s Global Customer Systems Manager, Airport Strategic Development, will provide delegates with insight into the thinking behind the trial and how it is performing at the half-way point in a presentation entitled: ‘Wearable technology – how Virgin Atlantic is using smartwatches and Google Glass in its Upper Class Wing at Heathrow to provide next-generation customer service to passengers’.
