Wabash-Cannonball Trail

The bike path is located along an abandoned railroad and runs through the Village of Whitehouse and western Lucas County. The path is a 12-foot wide asphalt concrete trail and includes all necessary railing and traffic control signing and marking. The project included the rehabilitation of an existing 86-foot long four-span railroad bridge, which involved widening the existing timber abutments, new timber deck and railing, and painting of the existing steel beam superstructure. The project was funded through ODOT and managed by the Lucas County Engineers Office as the Local Public Agency.

The Village of LaGrange owns about 88 acres of undeveloped parkland with a natural waterway in the southwest corner of the Village. The Village engaged landscape architects from Poggemeyer Design Group, Inc. (PDG) to design a Master Plan for the development of a Community Park. Several meetings were held where residents and Village officials participated in defining the amenities desired and developing various concepts with the architects. The Master Plan designates about 90 percent of the property for athletic endeavors and preserves about 10 percent of the property for passive recreation pursuits in woodlands and around two existing ponds.

The Village continues to work with PDG to attract resources to construct the park. The Village funded the construction of Phase I, which is 800 feet of roadway from the park entrance to the location of the first parking lot near the site for the community center. The community hopes to have the park fully constructed within the next several years.

Poggemeyer developed the master plan for this $19 million, 2,900 acre world-class sport shooting park which will be the largest public recreational shooting range in the country. This facility will provide the venue for all recreational shooting activities including rifle, pistol, trap, skeet and sporting clay shooting ranges, as well as an archery range. The park is designed for local use as well as national competitions and includes a campground area. Preliminary engineering included surveys, soil investigation, utility and right-of-way investigations, and a paleontological resources study.

Subsequent to completion of the Master Plan, PDG provided architectural, engineering and civil design services for the Fleckenstein Community Park. The park includes two baseball fields, two soccer fields, two tennis courts, extensive walking paths, a child’s playground area, and a new concession facility. PDG was also retained to develop a landscape design that would provide additional buffers to screen adjacent sub-developments.

The design of the concession facility included an attached men’s and women’s restroom, maintenance area, as well as a shelter area. U.S. Green Building Council’s recommendations and guidelines were incorporated and followed in the design of this facility including usage of local construction materials, recycled fiber cement siding, natural light harvesting skylights, motion sensor plumbing faucets, waterless urinals and motion sensor mechanical units.

Fleckenstein Park

MASTER PLANPDG helped Deerfield Township plan nearly 400 acres of land for present and future use. The added pressures of residential development and the commercial growth in Deerfield Township, located next to Cincinnati and The Kings Island Amusement Park, prompted the Township to creae a plan to ensure that green space and parks remain available for their residents. The open space and parks consist of 10 separate areas ranging in size from 3 to 70 acres.

Site analysis was conducted of each area to determine the best use for recreational and preservation purposes. Long and short term goals were developed to provide an improvement schedule for the Township to implement as funds become available. Preliminary design concepts were estimated at approximately $7 million, which included various improvements throughout the parks.

Preliminary design concepts included various improvements throughout the parks such as:

∙Athletic fields

∙Water features

∙Hiking and bike trails

∙Picnic areas

∙Parking lots

∙Park entry areas

∙Shelters

∙Roadway alignment

∙ Landscaping

∙Formal gardens

∙Amphitheater

∙ Preservation areas

∙ Lookout areas

∙ Campgrounds

∙ Overlook pavilion

∙ Pedestrian bridges

∙ Connectors to the regional Miami-to-Miami bike trail
