Celebrating 60 years as the Village of Glendale Heights!2 • September/October 2019

Dear Residents,With fall quickly approaching us and summer slowly fading in our rear view mirrors, I want to take a moment to thank all of our residents for helping us celebrate the Village of Glendale Heights’ 60th anniversary on Saturday, July 13th. Glendale Heights Fest was bigger and better than ever with added rides, a new layout, and of course, a fireworks show that people are still raving about months later. Although we reflect on the memories of just a few months ago, we need to continue to remember how far we’ve come as the Village of Glendale Heights over the past 60 years. With our school children returning to classes, we need to always remind them of our past and the rich history we have right here in Glendale Heights. As we plan ahead for an extremely busy September and October, I’d like to point out a few upcoming

events that are all listed throughout this Newsletter. We begin with the Patriot Day Ceremony on September 11th, where we remember those we lost on that tragic day. We then celebrate Oktoberfest from September 12th through September 22nd with 11 straight days of authentic German food, drinks and music brought to you by Chef Wolfgang and Schnitzel Platz Restaurant. We also have the Show & Shine Car Show and Swap Meet and Community Garage Sale on Sunday, September 15. We then round out the month of September with the annual Fishing Derby and Harvest Fest on Saturday, September 28th. From there, we look ahead to October where we start with the Family Health and Safety Fair on Wednesday, October 2nd and then we finish off October with all of our Halloween events and programs!Additionally in September, the Glendale Heights Center for Senior Citizens will be celebrating National Senior Center Month. All month long, they will be having various activities and prizes for their members. And to put the cherry on top of National Senior Center Month, they will be celebrating with an ice cream social! Membership is free to all Glendale Heights residents who are 60 years or better. Stop by the Center to learn more about what they have to offer!I hope you all have a great fall season! If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me during regular office hours at 630.909.5303 or send me an email to [email protected], or I encourage you to stop by our community events and come say hi. I also invite you for coffee at the Center for Senior Citizens with myself and your Village Board of Trustees on the first Saturday of each month. We are always here to serve you and make sure the community strives for a better tomorrow! Enjoy the fall season and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Linda Jackson Village President

Before Care!In an effort to keep our ponds clean and to protect the wildlife that inhabits the areas around our catch and release ponds, the Village of Glendale Heights will be installing fishing line recycling containers at Lake Becerra, Mill Pond and Gladstone Park. These containers are for old fishing line that can harm wildlife and create tripping hazards around the ponds. Please help to keep our ponds clean and safe. There is the same amount of water in the world today as there was when the earth was formed. The water that comes out of your faucet today could have been part of a glacier that carved the face of the earth years ago. Possibly it could have been part of the oceans when the Vikings set sail to explore the New World. Water is the only substance naturally found in all three states on earth (solid, liquid, and vapor).Nearly 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water but less that 3% is drinkable. The Oceans hold about 97%, and the Glacier’s and polar ice caps hold another 2%. This leaves less than 1% of the world’s water for uses such as agriculture, manufacturing, community and personal needs. The polar ice caps contain 77% of the world’s fresh water supply and another 22% is trapped in the ground. This leaves only 3% of the world’s fresh water supply in lakes and rivers.Out of all the water produced for human consumption less than 1% is actually consumed. Nearly 40% of our water is used outdoors for landscaping and cleaning, another 30% is flushed down the toilet, almost 19% goes down the drain during showers and baths, and about 10% is used for washing our clothes and dishes, this leaves about 1% for cooking and drinking. If you would like to learn more water facts or how you can conserve water, visit www.epa.gov/watersense

The WPCF completed the final phase of rebuilding the Facility's Influent Screens this summer. They are the first part of the Plant’s process. The screens remove large rags, sticks, concrete, rocks, bottles & cans that would do damage to the pumps and other equipment in the facility. Screenings are placed into an auger press, squeezing out excess water and organic matter from the debris, and then placed into plastic wrapping and disposed of in a dumpster, then taken to the landfill for disposal.

Improvements to the Water Pollution Control Facility

This year, the Village is constructing seven roads under the 2019 MFT Road Program, using revenue from the state’s Motor Fuel Tax. Portions of Almond Lane, Windy Point Drive, Paul Avenue, Charles Drive, Brookside Drive, Van Meter Street, Montana Avenue and Chadwick Lane were constructed under this summer’s program. The construction consisted of storm sewer improvements and repairs, curb, sidewalk, driveway aprons, and road paving. The construction is expected to be concluded in September.

Glendale Heights Police Department

If you live in Glendale Heights and feel that you have a problem with speeding vehicles in your neighborhood, you are encouraged to request the trailer to be scheduled in your area by calling Sergeant Dziedzic at 630.260.6070.

The Glendale Heights Police Department uses the speed traffic trailer to assist in combating speeding vehicles and to remind drivers to watch their speed. The trailer helps promote speed limit compliance in:

• Neighborhoods

• School zones

• Construction sites

• High caution areas

The trailer is a portable, self-contained speed display unit that is towed to the desired location. It is left on the roadway to display speeds of oncoming vehicles on a highly visible LED (light emitting diode) display.

A speed limit sign mounted on the unit reminds drivers what the actual speed limit is on the roadway that they are on. The unit also has the capability of recording the speeds of the vehicles for traffic studies.

Request a Speed Traffic Trailer

The Glendale Heights Police Department consistently counts on residents to be the eyes and ears of the department. Crime prevention is everybody’s business! So, how can you help?

Most people are hesitant to call 911 to report what they saw or heard as suspicious. Yes, what you saw could have been nothing. However, wouldn’t it be better for a police officer to check and make sure? Police officers are never bothered or annoyed by suspicious activity calls. Investigating such things is a police officer’s job. In Glendale Heights, dial 9-1-1 to report any in progress incident. If suspicious activity is not in progress, you can still call 9-1-1 to meet with an officer, or you can contact the police department’s anonymous crime tip line at 630.260.6025. Any crime tip can be called into this number.

You can report non-emergency suspicious or criminal activity online as well to [email protected].

The most important asset the Police Department possesses is the human asset, our Officers. An important aspect of the department’s Community Oriented Policing (C.O.P.) philosophy is to have the Officers involved in as many community activities as possible so that citizens can place a name and person behind the badge.

In order to facilitate this, we have initiated a new section of the Village newsletter titled “Get to Know Us”. In future newsletters, we will introduce you to “your Officers”. Officers will give you a small bio on themselves, why they became Glendale Heights Police Officers and what their responsibilities are at the Department.

Meet Officer Bernal #386"I am 1st Generation Mexican-American. I was born in Escondido, California. My family moved to Illinois in 2003. I attended Lewis University in Romeoville where I obtained a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and Minor in Athletic Coaching. In 2014, I obtained my Masters in Public Safety Administration at Lewis University. I enjoy running, baseball, soccer and landscaping. I also love to eat tacos!

The Glendale Heights Police Department hired me in 2015. I came to work here because this Village gave me the opportunity to live out a childhood dream. I have truly grown to enjoy working here. Growing up, many life experiences left no doubt that I wanted to be a police officer. I always do my best to treat everyone I encounter, as I would want one of my family members in a similar situation to be treated."

bag to collect candy. The police department is accepting candy or monetary donations for this event, which may be dropped off at the police department any time before Halloween. Should you have any questions, please call Community Outreach Specialist Tanya Macko at 630.909.5459.

Fire Prevention WeekThe Bloomingdale and Glenside Fire Protection Districts are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years—to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” The campaign works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. NFPA statistics show that in an average year, fire departments respond to 357,000 home structure fires. These fires cause 2,630 fire deaths and 10,600 fire injuries. On average, seven people died in a fire in a home per day. If you would like to make an appointment for a fire station tour or have firefighters visit your civic group or organization, please call the Glenside Fire Protection District at 630.668.5323 or the Bloomingdale Fire Protection District at 630.894.9080.
