Lydia is twelve years old and the daughter
of Owen and Kristin Werth. She has
three older sisters, Gabrielle, Alexandria,
and Victoria and a twin brother, Avery.
She has been dancing since she was 4
years old and it is one of her favorite
hobbies. She started playing basketball
when she was in the fourth grade and
hopes to one day play on the Varsity team.
Lydia says her family would be classified as
her “favorite people” as they have always

taught her to never give up. She
listens to all types of music and Selena
Gomez would be her favorite actress.
She has a best friend named Faith, and
her favorite color is pink. It would be
too hard for her to choose one
favorite teacher as she loves them all.
Since her favorite class is Language
Arts, don't be surprised if you find her
with a good book. One of her
favorites is “The Missing Series”.
Lydia says, “I’d like be a teacher
someday, because I love little kids.”
On, Friday, October 21st,
ghosts and goblins from near
and far, and friendly witches,
gathered at the Posen
Elementary Gym for the first
Monster Mash Halloween
Dance. We had approximately
100 Elementary students in
attendance along with their
parents and brothers and
sisters. Music was provided by
Ken Polaski, a former PHS
student, and the children
danced the evening away
while enjoying snacks and
refreshments provided by the
parents and PTO members.

SMILING
Smiling is infectious; you catch it
like the flu.
When someone smiled at me to-
day, I started smiling too.
I passed around a corner and
someone saw my grin.
When he smiled, I realized I had
passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile and
then I realized its worth.
A single smile, just like mine, could
travel around the earth.
So if you feel a smile begin, don't
leave it undetected.
Let's start an epidemic quick and
get the world infected. Author Unknown
All students participated in the
Walk for Cancer on Monday,
October 31st. The elementary
students did laps in the Old

Mrs. Tosch’s 2nd/3rd Grade Class
The second graders have been busily working on our basic addition and
subtraction facts. Speed and accuracy are improving daily. They have also
learned about dinosaurs, fossils, plants, life cycles, and animals. Second and
third graders have been writing stories and improving our vocabularies. Our
spelling words are getting harder and we are up to the challenge. Our third
graders are reading like crazy with Lois and are speed demons. They are
improving their keyboarding skills and vising some cool sites. The early
history of Michigan is also something they are learning. Art has been fun.
Riley Krajniak, Brooke Gersewski,
Macy Kroll, Faith Romel,
Ethan Soik, & George Kroll The next drawing will take place on Monday.
Box top winners are drawn monthly. Each
sheet of ten box tops gets a ticket into the
monthly drawing. Winners get to pick a
prize. The tickets are saved throughout the
year, so you have many chances to win.
Each month the current tickets are drawn,
and then two tickets are drawn from all the
tickets.

fore Christmas break. You can put anything you'd like on
the notes. We will be selling before school, during lunch,
and recess. Candy canes will be $0.75 each
Mrs. Kuchnicki’s art classes are going extremely well, the
students are focused and she says they are a joy to work
with. They will be creating an abstract design using the
basic elements of shape. They have been working on
exercises to encourage artistic confidence and are
searching for those basic elements of shape as they
inspect the world around them. The students will name their
art pieces and display them in the hallway for others to
enjoy. They hope to have them completed within the next
couple of weeks. She had an overwhelming interest, over
fifty students, so she has been running the classes for two
days each week, one day for 5th and 6th grades and the
other for 3rd and 4th grades. Why did the turkey play drums in the band?
Answer: because he already had the drumsticks!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S DESK
As of Monday, October 31st we have begun our second marking period. It is hard to believe that we have finished our first quarter of the school year. MEAP assessments have been completed and have been shipped out. During our second marking period there will be a lot of changes in our weather. There may be a few days left to where sweatshirts and tennis shoes will be fine to wear outside but please make sure you children have the proper gear when the weather gets colder (and snowier). This means a winter coat, boots, hats and gloves. The days of sandals and shorts are over so let’s make sure our children are dressed appropriately for not only outside but also inside during the school day. Please note on the calendar that Thanksgiving Break will begin on Wednesday, November 23rd this year. School will resume on Monday, November 28th. Our Junior High boys basketball is in full swing and our JV and Varsity boys and girls teams will be revving up shortly. If basketball is your game, there will be plenty of Viking action to catch. It is an exciting time with the holidays fast approaching so I assume that this quarter of the school year will be just as fast as the first. Time flies when you’re having fun and even faster when we have plenty of events lined up to keep all students and their families busy!! I hope you and your families remain healthy through this
transition time in the weather. Until next time…..
Sincerely,
Dru S. Milliron, Superintendent/K-12 Principal

Tater Tot (Kindergarten) News
Nobody can tell you about what is going on in our
classroom better than the students. Therefore, I will
highlight some students each month to tell what they are
enjoying about kindergarten. (All will be given a chance by
the end of the year.)
*Katelyn Bielas~I like making books in kindergarten. It is fun. I like to read them.
*Gunnar Brunet~ I like when we play in the classroom. It is fun to build with the blocks.
*Harvey Calloway~I like when we do work. I like writing my name, coloring and writing in my journal.
*Owinn Comerford~ I like when we have circle time and we sing songs and dance around.
Welcome to our new kindergarten student, David Jeewek.
He joins up from down south. Here's wishing him a
smooth transition to his new state and school! We now
have 22 students in our class~12 boys and 10 girls. It has
been great getting to know this wonderful bunch of
kindergartners in the first marking period! I am so happy to
see how much they enjoy learning new things! As men-
tioned by the students, we have been very busy with
books, journals, singing, dancing and playing, to name some
of our activities. Also, we had a wonderful Halloween party
and they all looked great in their costumes! I can't wait for
more fun and learning in the months ahead! Happy
Thanksgiving to everyone! I am thankful to work at a
school with such great students, supportive parents and
awesome staff members! Good luck hunters!
Thank you to Mr. Moliterno who so generously gives of his
time by volunteering in our school (mainly the 5th and 6th
grade). It warms the heart to see someone donate their
time so selflessly! We are so thankful and lucky to have
him at our school! (He also volunteers two additional days
at an Alpena school! Wow!)
Thank you to Carrie Sobeck (2nd grader Aden's mom) for
all of her hard work on the newspaper! Also, thanks to
Leslie Konieczny (Halie (1st) and Joey's (2nd) mom) for her
help in getting the newspaper put out! We are so lucky to
have these ladies working so hard on a monthly school
newspaper! (Sorry if I missed anyone else involved!)
Sincerely, Mrs. DeRocher :)

Third Grade Writing Workshop
Over the past two months the third grade class has been working very diligently on narrative and expository pieces. Mrs. Kuchnicki and I have been working together to create lessons to help these students become more proficient in their writing. Before school started, the two of us along with other teachers at Posen School attended a writing conference called Step Up to Writing. This program offers wonderful writing lessons and activities that the students really enjoy. We have already completed our first narrative titled “My Summer Snapshot” which is about a fun activity that they did over the sum-mer. These pieces will be displayed at parent teacher conferences. Currently we are working on another narrative piece about their hobbies. We will wrap up my time teaching writing work-shop with an expository piece about scarecrows which we will research together, and another narrative piece about friendship. I look forward to seeing the progress that each student has made during my time teaching 3rd grade writing workshop. Miss Perrault
Mrs. Lightner’s 5th
grade Journals
Journal prompt was: The best thing about Halloween is or was…
Jared Sharpe—“The best thing about Halloween is going trick or
treating with my friends. But I also love getting candy, candy, and
candy. All kinds of candy. I don’t care. It just has to be my kind of
candy. So, I like all pretty much, but I do not like all. I like most.
Megan Rasmussen—“The best thing about Halloween is trick or
treating. There was a lot of candy. Decorating was fun because we
carved pumpkins and put up a big skeleton on the front window.”
Brooke Ciarkowski—“The best thing about Halloween is the CANDY!
Especially candy from Ace Hard Ware. I took a king size Rolo. It’s a
little circle milk chocolate with caramel in the middle. It’s not gone
now, but soon they will be gone.”
Lilly Lewis—“The best thing about Halloween is can people figure out
who you are. Can people figure out what costume you are wearing?
Can people guess what you are like a cop, care girl, old lady, farmer
or cow girl?”
Anissa Eagling—“My favorite thing about Halloween is going trick-or-
treating and getting lots and lots of candy. The other thing is seeing
all the funny costumes. Then I like to go trick-or-treating with my
friends.”
Paul Styma—“The best thing about Halloween is the candy. I love
candy. I like taffy more than anything. It’s the best.”
Hannah Stone—“The best thing was I got to go trick or treating with
Megan. I also went with her cousins and her brother. Her older
brother was handing out candy. He gave me more than anyone.”
Ryan Tinker—“The best thing about Halloween is the candy. I got so
much my mom is going to donate some of it.”
Grayson Krajniak—“The candy was the best thing about Halloween.
Halloween gives you lots of candy. You get chocolate, chips and
other goodies.”
There is an extra gift catalog for our Elementary Avon
Fundraiser. They are available in the library.
QUIZ Are You a Bit of a Bully?
Have you ever been a bully? “Not me!” you
say. But you may have been without even
realizing it. Take this quiz and find out.
1. You hear your best friend teasing a kid about being overweight. You:
A. Laugh. Your friend said it in a funny way. B. Leave. You don’t want any part of your friends behavior. C. Quietly urge your friend to leave the kid alone. 2. A really embarrassing picture of a kid you know is being sent around. You: A. Show it to everyone around you then forward it to someone else. B. Refuse to accept it, or if it’s electronic, delete it from your phone or email. C. Tell an adult you trust and ask him or her what to do. 3. When your teacher tells you to form groups you notice that the same kids are excluded every time. This time you: A. Hurry to form your group so that you wont get stuck with these kids. B. Don’t worry about those kids someone else will choose them. C. Invite them to your group. No one wants to be left out.
4. A popular group of kids you really want to be friends with asks you to help play a mean trick on someone. You:
A. Play along. They are going to do it with or without you, and this might make you friends with the popular kids. B. Pretend you are not going to be In school the day of the trick so you can’t be part of it. C. Tell them you think it sounds mean and they shouldn’t do it. 5. You see your friend pushing around a kid at recess. You: A. Watch. The kid probably had it coming, and no one else who’s watching is stopping the fight. B. Leave. It isn’t your fight. C. Get a teacher. Your friend may not like it but at least no one will get hurt.
If you answered mostly A: Careful, you could be a bit of a bully. Before you
act, think about how your actions might make others feel.
If you answered mostly B: You don’t bully others, but you don’t stick up for
kids who are being bullied, either. Ask yourself, “How can I help?”
If you answered mostly C: You stick up for kids who are being bullied.
Good for you! Soon others may follow your lead.
