Craft to 20th?Long -simmering personnel

matters at 20th Fox Recordsappeared to be heading for aclimax last week. As the streetbuzzed with rumors, one ques-tion seemed paramount. Wouldthe new diskery boss be MortyCraft?

It was known that Craft hadhad several lengthy interviewswith such Fox brass as Sey-mour Poe and Jack Bonanti. Itwas also known that shouldCraft enter the picture, an-other personality of Craft'schoice might be involved. Thisperson was being interviewedat the company last Wednes-day (15).

The questions about the firmhave been asked since the de-parture over a month ago ofNorman Weiser. Weiser tookan executive post with Kapp'snewly created subsidiary, FourCorners Records.

Poe is actually general man-ager of the film company, butmost sources believe he is op-erating as the recordfirm as well. Bonanti in addi-tion to his 20th Fox duties, isalso a colleague of former Sin-atra manager Hank Sanicolain the operation of BartonMusic.

Craft is seen in the trade as apossible choice since he knowshow to "tumel" with recordsand because of his experiencein operating the former War-wick label, a subsidiary ofSeven Arts, a film and TVproduction empire.

Convention WeekHow to present the product to

distributors and generate themost excitement. That was thequestion last week as the diskindustry opened round twoof the annual summer -fall salespresentation season. WarnerBros. -Reprise, Epic, Columbia,VeeJay & Kapp were all hold-ing their meets this week.

Round one occurred duringthe recent ARMADA conven-tion when five different com-panies collared distribs attend-ing the conclave to show themnew materials on the way.

With the second wave as-suming a basically West Coastcharacter with various meetsin Las Vegas, Los Angeles andTahoe, at least one company.unable to muscle in to the al-ready over -cluttered schedule

of manufacturer conventions,decided to hit the road itself.

Key Liberty -Imperial execs,who had originally scheduleda Los Angeles convention thethird week in July, canceledit because of a conflict withanother firm. Execs will leaveon a cross-country tour Tues-day (28) to tell their story "toeach distributor in his hometerritory," enabling "all salespeople to attend the meets."

Cast is headed by president,Al Bennett, and includes ex-ecutive vice president, PhilSkaff; vice president HaroldLinick; marketing director DonBohanan; LP sales chief, LeeMendell and singles head, BobFead. Imperial sales manager,Ken Revercomb will visit thedistribs for that label.

Meanwhile, Epic Recordsbrass left last mid -week toopen chapter one of their ownnational sales convention, atthe Eden Roc, battle -scarredMiami locale of frequent diskindustry conclaves. This affair,for the firm's eastern distribu-tors, ran July 15-19. West coastedition, set at the Sahara, LasVegas, was due for its two-dayrun, Monday and Tuesday (20-21).

With a one -day open date,the Sahara then plays host forthree days to the big ColumbiaRecords meet July 23, 24, and25. Warner Bros. -Reprise isset for a one -day session, July20, also in Vegas; VeeJaystages its one -day affair July21 in its home bailiwick of LosAngeles, and Kapp will enter-tain its distributors at LakeTahoe, July 23-25.

The Kapp affair will be themost colorful in the firm's his-tory, with the schedule includ-ing a paddle -wheel boat excur-sion on the lake, an aerialtramway ride up to the 11,000foot level and a tour to theghost town of Virginia City,Nevada.

Elvis Over BarryWho says Elvis is slipping?

Not the Republican Party, atany rate. On Monday night(13) in New York, the NBC,ABC and CBS stations werebroadcasting the RepublicanConvention in San Francisco.WOR-TV, was showing Elvis'early flick "Loving You," afirst for Elvis on TV in theNew York area. So who wonthe biggest share of audience

in New York? Not the Republi-can convention, but Elvis witha 13 rating and a 23 per centshare of audience from 7:30 to9 p.m.

Mary's With MotownThis has been a year for

record companies to get intodisputes about who is undercontract to whom. King andSmash have tangled aboutlames Brown and the case isnow in the courts; Everest andMercury have clashed overGloria Lynne, and that casehas also been in the courts.

Barney Ales, of MotownRecords, is trying to head offany legal hassles over one ofMotown's key artists, MaryWells, before it develops. Forweeks it has been known inthe trade that at least onelarge firm was talking to MissWells about joining their labeland Miss Wells was listening.So last week Ales sent out aletter, informing the press thatMary Wells was still undercontract to Motown. He addedthat Motown's legal staff hadinformed the companies whowere talking to Mary that theyshouldn't.

Beatlemania, AgainOn Tuesday last (15) United

Artists threw the doors openin New York for three invita-tional previews of the forth-coming Beatles' film, "HardDay's Night." Without givingaway any of the details, it canbe assumed from the hystericalreaction of the squealing teen-ers present, that the movie willmake it - in triplicate. Thestereophony of youthful gleeon the screen and in the audi-ence was deafening and leadsone to suppose the kids willhave to see it at least threetimes each to catch the dia-logue. But it's going to be aharder day's night for theaterowners as they wend theirweary way home nightly andtry to block out the soundsfrom their ears and get somesleep.

By Wednesday, New Yorkdeejays who had attendedwere spilling out bits of theplot for their fans-all of whomare awaiting the gun to gooff. One warning: little oldladies from anywhere bettersteer clear of the streets onAugust 22 when flick opens.

Freed ReturnsIt has been a long hiatus for

a man who was once called"the king of rock and roll jock-eys," Alan Freed. In fact it'sbeen nearly a year since hewas heard on radio promotinga rock platter in his usuallyexciting manner. But now Freedis back, and though his newstation does not have the pow-er of WINS or WABC in NewYork or other stations wherehe used to work, his return willbe received with interest inthe trade. His new slot is onFM station KNOB in San Fran-cisco from 12:00 midnight to2:00 a.m. every night. He willplay blues, the rock, and nowand then will handle jazz re-motes, since KNOB is one ofthe top jazz stations on thecoast.

Tower Names RayTower Records, newly formed

Capitol subsidiary, has namedEddie Ray as a. and r. produc-er. Gordon (Bud) Fraser, headof the label, said Ray will headup all Tower label productionand will handle acquisition ofmasters from sources here andabroad.

Ray's career in the disk fieldstarted in the early '40s withthe West Coast -based AladdinRecords. Later he joined Cen-tral Records, indie Los Angelesdistributor. More recently hewas with Imperial and Liberty.He recently produced the IrmaThomas smash, "Wish Some-one Would Care."

Christy TV SeriesThe New Christy Minstrels

will hit the big TV time thissummer when they star.in theirown TV series to be sponsoredby the Ford Motor Company.It will be called "Ford Pre-sents The New Christy Min-strels." The program will betelevised nationally as theNBC-TV summer replacementfor "Hazel" on Thursday nights.It will debut on August 6 andrun through September 10.

Show will be produced by GarySmith and taped at locationslike the New York World'sFair and the UCLA campus.

While its purpose has not yetbeen designated, they have al-ready enlisted the services ofthe London Symphony Orches-tra and conductor Leopold Sto-kowski to present a specialconcert at Carnegie Hall on Oc-tober 21. There will also beseveral soloists on that occa-sion. Proceeds will go into thefund. The London Symphonywas Monteux's last permanentorchestra.

Monteux died on July 1, atthe age of 89, at his home inHancock, Maine. As a tributeto the conductor, several of hiscolleagues have set up a specialconducting course at Tangle -wood to handle the studentswho had planned to attend Mr.Monteux's school this summer.Headed by Max Rudolf, musicdirector of the Cincinnati Sym-phony, the course at Tangle-wood (August 2-23) will haveErich Leinsdorf, Richard Bur-gin, Aaron Copland, LukasFoss, Gunther Schuller, SeijiOzawa and Stokowski as con-tributing instructors.

Big Decca ReleaseDecca, Coral and Brunswick

will issue 33 new albums inAugust. On the pop scene, RickNelson, Robert Maxwell andthe Surfaris appear to be thebig ones, with Kitty Wells rep-resenting the country area.

The classical (Gold Label)division release includes thefollow-up to the highly ac-claimed "Play of Daniel" bythe New York Pro Musica.This time it's the "Play ofHerod."

"Last. Kiss" HassleJay -Gee Records, parent firm

of Jubilee, Josie, and other la-bels, started suit last weekagainst Colonial Record Manu-facturing Company, Harry Fin-fer, Paramount Pressing Com-pany and all distributors whoare handling a record on theTamara label called "Last Kiss"by J. Frank Wilson and TheCavaliers. Jay -Gee claims thatthe record is signed exclusivelyto Jay -Gee Record Companyand is now out on its Josie la-bel. Jay -Gee further claimsthat the artists, J. Frank Wil-son and The Cavaliers, are un-der exclusive contract to Jay-Gee.

"Roses" On WaxColumbia Records for the

past few years has been most

active in recording Broadwayand Off-Broadway dramas, aswell as musicals from theBroadway stage. Firm hascome up with some strong dra-ma sellers, indicating that thespoken word can be a sellingword too. Its hottest latelyhave been "Who's Afraid OfVirginia Woolf," and it is do-ing well now with RichardBurton's box office smash ver-sion of "Hamlet." Last weekColumbia recorded a much ac-claimed drama "The SubjectWas Roses," by Frank D. Gil-roy. Latter has been highlypraised by newspaper and mag-azine critics as the "new play-wright of the season."

RCA Victor is still hot aftera prize dramatic plum, an up-dated version of "Otello," star-ring Lawrence Olivier, now abox-office hit in London.

Inez & Charlie TourRock and roll stars Inez and

Charlie Foxx scored such a bigsuccess in England that theyhave been asked back to tourthe country in September withthe Rolling Stones. The hus-band and wife team returnedto the United States last weekwith manager and head of SueRecords, Juggy Murray after atour of England that took inclubs in Manchester, Shrews-bury and London. They alsoappeared on TV, both on theITV and the BBC networks.

It was the first tour of Brit-ain for the duo, and a potentone. Pair's disks are releasedin England on the Sue label.

ASCAP SymposiumYoung composers and lyric-

ists who want to find out whatgives with the commercialmusic scene need look no fur-ther. ASCAP has come upwith the answer, by schedul-ing a six -week "Symposiumon American Music," to startSeptember 10.

The Society, according toPR director, Dick Frohlich, hasset the free sessions on Thurs-days, starting September 10.Each meeting will deal withwriting in a specific area andwill feature talks by prominentmembers of ASCAP. Areas tobe covered include musicaltheater (September 10); folkand country (17); symphonicand concert (24); jazz (October1); pop (8); and film and TVscoring (15). Stanley Greenwill coordinate the series.

Silver Mines GoldAl Silver, veteran chief of

Herald -Ember Records, has anew single hit, and the envi-able kind that is played onsuch diverse stations as strong-ly pop -oriented WMCA (NewYork) and WNEW, leadinggood music outlet in the samecity.

The disk, "La Nuit," by sax-ophonist Jimmy Lytell, wascut three years ago by pub-lisher Lucky Carle and writerSonny Skylar, who told Silver(after hit indications were re-ceived) that the disk was cut along time ago and had beenrejected by nine firms.

The standard cry was "it'snot for this market," accord-ing to the reports. The side,which has the flavor of ChrisBarber's "Petite Fleur" hit ofa few years back, is provingthere's no such thing as arecord that's "not for this mar-ket," as the owners of LouisArmstrong's "Hello Dolly," andBarbra Streisand's "People"can readily attest.

Harmonica PromotionA round-the-clock Beatles

promotion has been scheduledby WTIX, New Orleans, totie in with the Britishers' con-cert there September 16. Hoh-ner harmonicas will be offeredas prizes. The station's DanDiamond is heading the pro-motion.

The Beatles wide use of theharmonica in their disks and intheir upcoming picture, "AHard Day's Night," has re-sulted in a nation-wide Hoh-ner harmonica promotion, alltied in with the Beatles forth-coming tour here. Other sta-tions are planning similar pro-motional stunts.

Lady With MustangThe sign was tacked to the

outside door of a much visitedarea of Columbia Recordsoffices in New York. It read:"For Sale, 1965 Mustang con-vertible. Call extension 536."The extension was answeredby a sweet -voiced young ladynamed Miss Simmons. She said,"It's my boy friend's car. Hewants to sell it quickly. He'sonly had it a short time so ithasn't been driven much, sayabout 2000 miles. It's a blackconvertible with white leatherinterior, blue carpets and awhite racing stripe down theside. It's a lovely car." We toldher we'd let the trade knowabout it. "That's wonderful"she exclaimed. The DiscothequeBane or Boon?Clubs where adults can dance the frug and themonkey to records are catching on in the UnitedStates despite objections from the musicians union.

The discotheque, the record playingnight club for adults, appears to be on itsway as the next fad for club owners andprospective club owners. Wherever theyhave opened, (there are three in NewYork, a few in Chicago and a couple inHollywood) they have done sensationalbusiness, and in some cases have bolsteredailing rooms to the point where they aremaking substantial profits.

The word discotheque is French, andaccording to students means a recordlibrary or record librarian. It soon cameto mean a person who played records fordancers in a club and now means the clubitself where records are played. Historiansof such events claim the first discothequewas in Cannes, where it was called"Whiskey A Gogo," and many of the clubswhich have opened since in Paris, London,and Hollywood, have been called "Whis-key A Go Go's."

How they spread. From Cannes, disco-theques spread across Europe and came toAmerica via New York. Key discothequesin New York are Shepheard's, in theDrake Hotel, L'Interdit in the GothamHotel, and the new club in the Hotel Del-monico called Il Mio. In Chicago there isthe "id" in the Ambassador West, and inHollywood the club is the Whiskey AGo Go. Every night there's a full house

Discotheques are, in a sense, a continua-tion of the dance fad that spread from theteen to the adult world when the twistswept America and then Europe aboutthree years ago. Since the twist simmereddown, the adult world, especially the sleeksophisticated and posh adult world, hastried to stay abreast of its teenagesons and daughters' dances. At the mo-ment the frug is the hip adult dance, butmature terpers in the sexy sixties haverun through them all from the monkey tothe chicken back.

Dancing adults. If an adult wants to do ateen dance what can he or she dance itto? Obviously the answer is the samerock and roll records that the kids startthe dances to, meaning the hit singlesfrom America and Britain and othercountries. So at discotheques the recordsplayed are a mixture of sides by Chuck

Berry, The Beatles, The Four Seasons,The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers andother teen acts, plus records by the FrankSinatras, the Tony Bennetts, Louis Arm-strongs and names that have always beenregarded as adult acts. The records areprogrammed in carefully casual order, sothat the adults, (from 18 to 60) can dancefox trots, sambas and a merengue as wellas the frug and the monkey. The key tothe whole scene is that the records alwayskeep playing.

The introduction of the discotheque toAmerica has stirred up union problemsthat seem to have by-passed Europe. Atmany of the U. S. discotheques, at Shep-heards in New York for example, sevenmusicians used to play along with therecords. Reason for this in the beginningwas so that live musicians would con-tinue to be employed with the records.

However, reaction among musicians wasso severe, not only in New York, but alsoin Chicago, that the National AFMstepped in and issued an order forbiddingmusicians to work with recorded music inany club.

Sans musicians. This means that Shep-heards in New York will now run itsdiscotheque minus live musicians. How-ever in Miami Beach, at the Hotel EdenRoc, the planned discotheque will nothappen and live musicians will continueto be employed. In Chicago the Ambassa-dor West's "Id" will have to get alongwithout live musicians. In Hollywood,Paul Raffles will have to keep his club,P.J.'s, as a live musical establishment,since AFM local 47 there forbade recordsto be used with musicians a number ofweeks ago.

Rooms that never used live musicianswill not be affected by the union ruling.But clubs that do apparently will have atough time if they try to turn their roomsinto discotheques. This ruling raises a hostof related philosophical questions. Is itbetter for musicians to oppose disco-theques and try to keep only live musi-cians in clubs, or is the spread of recordedmusic in clubs inevitable so that it wouldbe better for a few musicians to workalong with the records in each of thediscotheques? Pro and con arguments canbe heard all over New York and othercities. Continued next page

The Discotheque Scene In EuropeFrance. The Whiskey A Go Go in Nice

is a myriad of small rooms down in thebasement of a typical French building ina sidestreet off the main drag-Le Prome-nade des Anglais. The admission fee isaround 5 French francs (about $1.15), andthere is a yearly membership cost, whichof course doesn't apply if you're a visitor.The club has a bar, waitress service-thegirls and boys are usually sophisticatedFrench versions of an American beatnik-and the decor is explained away by softlighting, small tables, a nickel sized dancefloor and a wild rock 'n' roll group. Thereis also a juke box, which plays betweencombo sessions.

Clientele at the French Whiskey A GoGo ranges from college students thrubeachcombers up to the jet set. Andeveryone wears what they like and danceshow they like. Club opens around 9 p.m.,and closes about 6 a.m., the entertainmentbeing loud and continuous.

England. The first Whiskey A Go Go toopen in London, England, was backed byone of the country's biggest breweries andis entirely different from its French an-cestors. In addition to having a bar, fullywired -up stage and sound equipment, theLondon Whiskey A Gogo also boasts asteak restaurant and expensive entertain-ment. It is also one of the few clubs inthat metropolis which holds private movieshowings.

Membership at the London Whiskey AGo Go is compulsory owing to the Britishliquor laws, which decree that any estab-lishment selling alcohol and presentingentertainment becomes a membershipclub. Membership costs here are oneguinea (three dollars), while the admis-sion charge over the weekend is $1.50, lessduring the rest of the week.

The dance floor runs the whole length ofthe club and the music is taped. It consistsof hit parade records, Ray Conniff andanything Latin American. The club booksseveral live groups-particularly for week-end dates-and many top English combosreceived their training there.

In Contrast. In complete contrast, aBritish discotheque is something like TheSaddle Room, an extremely elegant andsophisticated club in the heart of Mayfair,which is expensively decorated and 'the'place to go among the smart young set.Decor takes the shape of barrels uphol-stered in red leather, bigger barrels usedas small tables with candles, and naturalwood walls, which are decked with sad-dles, rifles, old hunting jackets, coachlights, belts, boots, whips and other typesof leather trappings.

Like Trude Heller's in New York's Vil-lage, the Saddle Room is a tryout pad forall the new dances, which are charminglydemonstrated by French owner HeleneCordet-once a night club singer and longtime friend of the Duke of Edinburgh-and a team of young enthusiasts led byher son and daughter. The room opensat 9:30 p.m., has a liauor license until 3:30a.m. and closes two hours after that. Musicfor dancing on the minute sized floor,comes from two record players, whichare contained in a small booth and operatesimultaneously, playing everything on theBritish, French and American hit parade.Life membership here is only $3, andprice of admission is $2.50, which includesa drink. There is no live entertainment,but the place is always busting withcelebrities. In the same bracket are clubslike The Garrison, Madison Room, andthe Ad -Lib, which opened in the heart ofSoho about a year ago.

Class clientele. The clubs who turned toplaying records did it for obvious reasons.Their type of clientele-and most of thediscotheques as yet are class spots-dugthe discotheque scene abroad and seemedready for similar places here. This clien-tele liked to dance to the pop hits. It's alot cheaper to use Chuck Berry and TriniLopez on records than in person.

That the club owners hit on the rightthing for their clientele is indicated by thewaiting line outside Shepheard's in NewYork every night. Reservations are notonly necessary, they are a must, and oftena day in advance. It and L'Interdit are"in" places, having open door policies. IlMio, at the Hotel Delmonico is a mem-bership spot, so the hoi polloi is excluded.

One thing appears certain. The disco-theque fad is just beginning. It shouldbecome more widespread over the nextyear. As long as the adult set keeps danc-ing, and liking current hits and currentperformers, (Trini Lopez, Beatles, ChuckBerry, etc.) discotheques should do well.

To teen agers, the idea of their parentsdancing to the music of The Beatles, et.al., and on records yet, must seem star-tling. The kids, however, still have theirrecord hops, usually presided over bytheir favorite disc jockey. The recordhops, which continue to do mighty well,were and are the original discotheques.

Record companies, who are neverones to let grass grow under their feet,have jumped on the discotheque theme.Decca has a strong selling album withvarious artists out called "Dance Disco-theque," and Lester Lanin has a new al-bum on Philips called "Dancing At TheDiscotheque." The Choral Sound Is Back AgainHit singles by the Ray Charles Singers, Ray ConniffSingers, indicate that the public again wants thebig chorus sound. Mitch knew it all the time.

Nobody is quite sure who started it all-Mitch Miller with his sing-alongers orpossibly the Mormon Tabernacle Choir-but singing groups, the large ensemblekind, are making it bigger than ever, withparticular impact at the singles level.

The phenomenon has interesting rami-fications. One is the fact that though avocal chorus can become a steady albumchart entry, not until a single hit bloomsdo things really begin to happen.

Ray Charles group. For example, theRay Charles Singers, who've been onDecca and MGM prior to their arrival atCommand several seasons ago, have al-ways enjoyed a following through theirdisk efforts and their regular appearanceson the Perry Como TV shows.

Now that Enoch Light, president ofCommand and one of the acknowledgedwise men of the record business, hasfollowed through with his predictionmade last year that "we'll have a singlerecord hit with Ray Charles' group,"offers are flocking in. Charles and his as-sociates are known to have received re-quests to do concerts on college campusesand in major concert halls. "It has alsoenhanced their importance on TV aswell," Light said last week, while notingthat "Al Di La," the group's second single,is even bigger than their first, "Love MeWith All Your Heart."

Perhaps the Charles group in itself hashelped pave the way for others. In anyevent, the latest chorus to have a hitsingle is the Ray Conniff Singers, on Co-lumbia. A half dozen or more years ago,Conniff found a successful disk formulaof mixing lyricless voices with instru-ments into a time -tested mood technique.More recently, the voices were given amore traditional role with lyrics. Thefinal step was the recent release of asingle, "Invisible Tears," the Conniffchoral treatment of a country song hit byNed Miller on the Fabor label.

The same pattern is now emerging asdeveloped with Ray Charles. The sparkgenerated by a single record hit has donemore than a slew of hit albums to reallyget the public interested. Offers are beingmade and tradesters close to that scenefeel it is not unlikely that Conniff may suc-cumb to the demand and make a concertgroup out of his studio complement.

Mitch too. As an aside on the choralfront is the latest in the continuing sagaof Mitch Miller in the music business. Ina career which actually encompasses ahistory of sub -careers, Miller has made itas classical oboist, pop a. and r. man, re -

cording artist with his own choral con-ception, the sing -along chorus, a TV starwith the same, simple choral format, andfinally now, as a night club entertainer.Miller and his sing -along group, althoughno longer active on TV, are currently thehottest club attraction on the Las Vegasstrip. They're knocking the customers outat the Desert Inn, again proving the long-time entertainment validity of the choralensemble.

The choral impact can also be regardedas an example of the increasing "spill-over" effect of albums 'on the total diskmarket. About the fact that a hit singlecan spark an album release bearing thehit single title, there's no argument. Now,however, the reverse is increasingly true,as in the case of recent hit singles in-spired by album play for such artists asBarbra Streisand and the Boston Pops,and now Ray Charles and Ray Conniff.

Traditional Path. Working in the moretraditional route is the case of the Green-wood County Singers, a Kapp ensemble ofnine singers. The label released an album

by the mountain-ish sounding folk -coun-try -pop group three months ago. Lastmonth a single, "The New Frankie andJohnny Song" was issued. This hassparked considerable action and air play,to the point where the label has had tore -do its album, since the original did notcontain "Frankie and Johnny." Repack-aging including the hit single and a strongpromotion on the set will be announcedat Kapp's distributor sales meeting inLake Tahoe next week. The group hasbeen playing the West Coast folk club cir-cuit (the Ice House, for example). Nowthey've moved into the bigtime club scenewith their current spot at the Cal -NevaLodge, coincidentally, also at Lake Tahoe.

The New Christy Minstrels and themore recent arrival, the Serendipity Sing-ers, are cases in point of the current bigensemble success pattern. The Christys.of course, have enjoyed a string of bothalbum and single hits. At the same time,they've become a major concert and clubattraction. For a one-nighter concert, theytake down as much as $10,000. The Min -

Making the grade. The Serendipitys whoenjoyed their first album hit last year andwho broke into singles with a track fromthe album, "Crooked Little Man," havebecome a smash club and concert group.They are good for $3,000 and occasionallymore a night, and according to their man-ager, Greenwich Village impressario, FredWeintraub, they are booked virtually 100percent through April of next year. Lastweek, appearing with comedienne PhylissDiller, they broke the house record in anengagement at the Broadmoor Hotel, Col-orado Springs.

be six voices doing a sort of ragtime, dixie,folk kind of thing," he said. The grouphas already been signed by Mercury andthey'll make their nitery bow in the BitterEnd Wednesday (29).

A friendly Weintraub competitor, ArtD'Lugoff, who operates the Village Gatenear by, last week introduced anothernew, 11 -member singing group, America'sChildren, from Rochester, N. Y. Thisgroup has been snapped up by WarnerBrothers Records.

A budding group. Still another buddinggroup, the Tillman Franks Singers, puttogether by the veteran manager of suchcountry acts as Claude King, David Hous-ton and the late Johnny Horton, havebeen signed by Hilltop Records, a wing ofPickwick International.

With this kind of frantic activity goingon, tradesters see the increasing likelihoodof renewed interest in and possible singlereleases by such venerable acts as theHarry Simeone Chorale, the Roger Wag-ner Chorale, the Norman Luboff Choir,and perhaps the Hugo and Luigi familyand children's choruses.

On yet another front, a new label, Acad-emy Records, helmed on a 50-50 basis byveteran publisher, Archie Levington andJane Gibbs, ex -head of Liberty Records'New York office, brought out as its secondrelease last week a single by the Chau-tauquans. In the tradition of the Serendi-pitys, it has nine members and its firstside, "The Same Old Reason," was writtenand the disk produced by Ed Miller, whowrote the Serendipity's first hit, "Crooked

Atlanta changed its nameto Caroline and continues tobroadcast to London and south.

Radio Manx, Britain's only le-gal commercial station, broad-casts three hours of musicinterspersed with news, weath-er, police, motoring and tour-ist info., every day now. Basedon the Isle of Man (whichhas its own constitution) thestation is limited to the island

only, using a one kilowatttransmitter. At the moment noadvertising is being aired.

Edmund Hockridge, a vet-eran singer from Canada, bestknown in Britain for his musi-cal roles, has switched fromPye to Decca. He bows on hisnew label with an EP of songsfrom "Camelot."

The Beatles' "Hard Day'sNight" single racked up a halfmillion advance orders beforeits July 10 release.

We received twu letterslast week commenting onour recent columns aboutthe voting procedures inNARAS. We are reprintingboth of them here, as wethink they will be of inter-est to everyone seriouslyconcerned with NARAS.

Dear Bob:I have read with much in-

terest your excellent article,NARAS VOTING, in theJune 6 issue of Music Busi-ness.

It was very gratifying toread an article that reflectssuch a well thought-out un-derstanding of many NAR-AS procedures, with con-structive suggestions forimprovement. It should in-terest you to know that theBoard of Trustees has feltfor some time that NARASmust eventually develop anominating or voting sys-tem in which the experts ineach field would be respon-sible for their own cate-gories.

Such a change cannot beeffected, however, until themembership in each special-ized field has grown suffi-ciently, so the nominating orvoting will then be repre-sentative and reflect an ac-curate vote. The recent ad-dition of the NashvilleChapter, for example, whichhas brought in so manymembers of the Country andWestern field, is one of thesteps that will eventuallymake it possible to vote byclassification.

In addition to the neces-sity of constant membershipincrease is the problem youposed-the fact that manymembers of NARAS qualifyin more than one area. TheBoard of Trustees has beenaware of this for some time.When we are ready for"branch" voting, our nextstep must be to work out asolution to the apparentproblem of having a "cus-tom" ballot for almost eachmember. From our experi-ence with voting proced-ures, such a system wouldbe more time-consuming andunfortunately more cost-

ly than you indicated, butif it is the consensus of theNARAS membership thatthis is the best procedurethese would not be deter-ring factors in adoptingsuch a system.

In the meantime, we takepride in the fact thatNARAS members do, to anamazingly large extent, re-frain from nominating andvoting in the categories withwhich they are not familiar.A analysis of the final vot-ing returns for the past twoyears shows that no membervotes in all the categories,and in some categories 25%to 50% to 75% of the mem-bers have refrained fromcasting their votes. Althoughthis is a fact that we havenot openly acknowledgedbefore, I think it proves thatNARAS members do votewith integrity and from per-sonal conviction.

In closing, may I say thatthere is most hearty agree-ment with you that "TheNARAS nominating and vot-ing procedure should re-main in the hands ofNARAS members." Wewould oppose most emphat-ically any suggestion thatthis privilege be taken frommembers and put into thehands of critics.

Hot new songwriting pair emergesJeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, young husband -wife team, make smash impact on music scene.Hatch ideas while riding around in Jaguar

Simplicity is the keynote to success. Atleast, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwichsubscribe to this policy, and their logic isreaping huge dividends.

Hubby and wife cleffers Jeff, 26 andEllie, 23, are the brains behind suchsmashes as "Chapel of Love", "I WannaLove Him So Bad," "Then He Kissed Me","Be My Baby", "Da Doo Ron Ron" andcountless other songs.

Their office-in the Leiber-Stoller suitein the Brill Building-is hung with vari-ous BMI citations, and is simply furnishedwith a piano, record player, three chairsand a tall, slim, carved wooden head, whichBarry says reminds him of a self sculp-ture, but which he adds was already inthe office when he moved in.

"We don't do any creative songwritingin this office," said Jeff. "We use it as atryout and listening room and assemblyroom for the middle to end of our ideas".

The songwriting team also records as theRaindrops.

The Jelly Beans are riding to success with the latest hit by the husband -wife

Ellie interrupted to state that the pairget most of their inspirations while driv-ing along in their recently acquiredJaguar.

"We like to hit on what I call a handle,"said Ellie. "That is, either a musicalphrase or riff or maybe even three wordsin a lyric which stick in people's minds.If we think of something in the morning,and don't remember what it was by theafternoon, we scrap it and start all overagain.

"Once we have that phrase or sound orwhatever, we work on it and build it upuntil it becomes a full-fledged song. Thenwe make a demo-I sing on all our owncompositions-using exactly the kind ofarrangement we feel suited to the number."I studied music for a while, which makesit much easier."

Jeff admits that although he got a col-lege degree in engineering, he can't playor read a note of music, so he has to relyon Ellie's knowledge.

Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich occa-sionally change their hats to become theRaindrops, who record on Jubilee andwho've had a couple of chart making hits.

Their success as recording artists intheir own right, lends a diverse note totheir already colorful ,careers.

"Being the Raindrops is fun" said Jeff."For most of our sessions, we not onlywrite the material, but we arrange andproduce as well.

"Of course, sometimes it gets a littlehectic when you're in the studio cutting asong and you want to re -arrange it inthe middle, or you feel it's dropped some-where. The session takes longer this way,but at least we only have ourselves toblame when it doesn't work out".

Where did the songwriting team ofJeff and Ellie begin?

pair.

"I was working at Trinity Music as astaff writer before Bobby Darin bought itout," said Jeff. "When he set up T. M.Music he asked me to stay and run thefirm for him. However, I'd had an offerfrom Leiber and Stoller, so I decided tomove over here."

Jeff made the move in March 1963. Sixmonths prior to that Ellie Greenwich hadalso joined the outfit. Both had had hitsbefore amalgamating with Leiber-Stoller.

"Among some of the early things I wrotewas 'Tell Laura I Love Her'," said Jeff,while Ellie admits to having penned "He'sGot The Power" for the Exciters. Itseemed natural for the boy and girl toteam up, and at this point, no one can besurprised to discover that with the aid oftheir old colleague Phil Spector, the trioturned out some stupendous smashes.

"I'd written a couple of things for Phil'sartists, but when the three of us startedworking together, we seemed to hit onsomething good," says Ellie. "Phil's is bril-liant although rather off -beat and weconsider ourselves fortunate to have somuch to do with him."

The pair's position over at Leiber-Stol-ler gives them carte blanche in the select-ing of new talent, songs and recordingsessions for Red Bird. They co -produced"Chapel of Love" and "I Wanna LoveHim So Bad" in addition to having writtenboth numbers.

Jeff and Ellie also do work for otherthan Red Bird Records. They recentlycleffed "Maybe I Know" for Lesley Goreon Mercury, following a request for newmaterial from her music director, KlausOgerman.

Professionally speaking, Texas -born,Oklahoma -reared Roger Miller, is aquadruple threat man, and all four ofhis talents come through on a record he'sbeen waiting for, for a long time. That'shis smash hit "Dang Me," where his tal-ents as comic, singer, writer and instru-mentalist, all come through in great style.

Roger, now 28, has been well-known onthe Nashville scene for several years,where he's done a number of disks, firstfor Victor, and now with Smash. He's alsowritten tunes that have become brisksellers for other artists.

Two years ago he got his chance tobreak out into the big, broad world ofpop entertainment-on the NBC-TV "To-night" show, and he made hay of the op-portunity. He's been back a number oftimes since and has also been a frequentguest on the Steve Allen show.

Now, Miller shows big promise of be-coming a major, all-round star. His TVbeachhead secured, his disk future seemscertain too, thanks not only to his ownnative talent, but to the clever, astutedisk -making ability of Smash Nashville a.and r. man, Jerry Kennedy, who ran the"Dang Me" date.

When Metropolitan Opera tenor JanPeerce raises his voice, it's not always insong. For Peerce, who obviously loves life,quite simply likes to talk-a lot. Evenwhen the conversation centers around hismusical life, the subject is invariably peo-ple.

All star cast. On the occasion of ourmeeting, Peerce was flat on his back-butonly physically. While in Lisbon lastmonth, he'd fallen and torn a ligamentin his left thigh and had been flown backto the states for an operation at Mt. SinaiHospital. He was in what he jokinglyreferred to as an "all star cast." He ex-plained that "Doctors, I've found, are big-ger prima donnas than we singers. Youshould hear them carry on about theirhandy work. After assuring us he'd be in excellentrepair in a matter of days, Peerce gotdown to his favorite subject-the culturalimage of America to the world at large.It's a subject he is particularly expert in,and he has now formulated a suggestedprogram which he has drafted and willsend to President Johnson.

Culture corps. "First of all," saidPeerce, "I'd like to make something clear.I'm not a super -patriot, nor am I a fanaticon this subject, but I do think that rela-tions with the rest of the world could beimproved. While we've had our govern-ment sponsored Cultural Exchange Pro-gram, it really serves a limited function.(Peerce was one of the first U.S. artiststo perform in Moscow under that pro-gram, and has been asked back numerous

times). Where it fails is in reaching theman on the street. Concerts are attendedby dignitaries, politicians, and otherartists, but for obvious reasons, the great-er public doesn't get to see us. I'm pro-posing that the government subsidize aCulture Corps, which would function inmuch the same way as the Peace Corps.I've discussed my plans with fellow art-ists, like Roberta Peters, and they've in-dicated they'd readily support such a pro-gram."

Dubious Americana. Peerce makes nobones about his strong feelings as to whatmust be done, as opposed to what hasbeen done. "Frankly, the reasoning ofsome of the people in charge of State De-partment tours is to be criticized. WhenI look over the list of people being sentout from time to time, I have to cringe.It's like certain advertisers who think thepublic is moronic-they forget that intel-ligent people buy soap too. An exampleof their thinking is that they turned downan opportunity to send the Bach AriaGroup on tour [Ed. note: a superb nucleusof outstanding New York performers in-cluding Peerce and Eileen Farrell, amongothers]. Their reasoning was that it wasn'tsufficiently 'Americana' to qualify. Myexperience is that the image which car-ries the most impact, or let's say getsmore for the dollar, is simply one of qual-ity. People always recognize quality.

"The biggest surprise, for instance, tofellow musicians in Russia, was to findthat my musical training was completelydone in the U.S., and for all the Italianroles I sing, I'm not Italian. They wereshocked, because they still think that wehave to import our stars."

Talking counts too. "In Russia I dis-covered that the important communica-tion I made was not during the perform-ance, but what happened after. Talkingwith musicians is as important as per-forming with them. You don't know aperson well until you've had an oppor-tunity to visit his home. Then you have afriendship going. Large after theater par-ties are a waste of money.

"A Culture Corps, as I see it, wouldenlist qualified musicians, composers, con-ductors, and others to spend a time notjust performing, but lecturing, and tutor-ing as well. Seminar discussions accom-plish wonders. And free concerts shouldbe arranged for the man on the street.The area of penetration should also beextended to include less obvious centersof culture. More should be done in Africaand Asia, not just Europe and Russia.

"It is also important that some of ouryounger talented people should be in-cluded in this program-not just bignames. They'd gain in experience andinsight, and that alone would be worththe investment."

Russia with love. When Peerce madehis first appearance in Moscow, he wassurprised to find how many people knewhim through his recordings. Black mar-ket copies of his "Masked Ball" withToscanini kept cropping up with re-quests for autographs. "I was so thrilledI didn't even care that I wasn't gettingroyalties on them. Records would be agreat means of communication if theycould be exchanged. I know that sincethat time, I carry records with me togive as gifts. They rarely see an Amer-ican -made record, and what a treasure itis for them." BARRY KITTLESON

Those feudin' sta-tions WFUN and WQAM,Miami Beach, Fla., are bothmaking plans to cart listen-ers to Jacksonville, Fla.September 11 when theEnglish group is scheduledto play the Gator Bowl. Itwill be their only Floridaconcert.

Station WFUN is givingaway 100 Beatle trips to thefirst dialers who send intheir name on a postcardand phone the station with-in an allotted time aftertheir name is called out onthe air. A pleasant surprise is instore for deejays across thecountry when one of theprettiest distaff duos pays acall on them soon. One isRosemary Prinz, betterknown to millions of house-wives as Penny in the CBS -TV daytime serial, "As theWorld Turns." Rosemaryhas cut an LP to be releasedon the Pharos label, recent-ly organized by Helen Noga(She's manager of JohnnyMathis and Mike Clifford).On the trek, Helen's daugh-ter, Beverly Noga will ac-company the lovely MissPrinz, making a mightypretty package.

Pharos, incidentally (don'tbother looking it up-it wasone of the Seven Wondersof the World-the one withthe lighthouse) has anotherdistinction. One of its firstsingles, by the Nomads, wasproduced by Jackie deShannon. Report is thatJackie's hooked now on theproducing scene.

Allan Sherman, that in-veterate authority on sum-mer camps, will check inthis Wednesday at the Bos-ton Symphony Orchestra'ssummer home, Tanglewood.This time, however, the"Hello, Muddah" man willseek new fodder. He'll makehis debut that night (22) asconductor, of the BostonPops Orchestra in a "Themeand Variations on 'HowDry I Am'." Thereafter hewill perform an up -datedversion of Prokofiev's chil-dren - of - all - ages classic,"Peter and the Wolf" en-titled "Peter and the Com-missar." Sherman, of course,has done his own librettofor the affair, which will bewaxed for posterity by RCAVictor Records. This couldcause a slight bit of releaseembarrassment for Victor,since we recall there was tobe another recording of"Peter and the Wolf" re-corded this summer withVan Cliburn and one of theJohnson girls.

On Sunday (12) the NewYork State Theater cast of"King and I" was recordedby RCA Victor, with, of

course Rise Stevens in therole of "I." During a re-cess, Walter Surovy, Rise'shusband and manager, ex-plained how Rise got therole from casting directorRichard Rodgers. It seemsthat Rodgers had Rise inmind to do "Sound of Mu-sic," not "King and I." ButRodgers, while ponderinghis casting went to a cock-tail party one evening, and"some drunk passed him asmall note," suggesting Risefor the part. Rodgers stilldoesn't know who it was.After hearing Surovy's tale,some smart aleck retorted,"I told you you should cutdown on your drinking,Walter."

After a too -long hiatusfrom the jazz scene, MaryLou Williams is making awelcomed return to recordson her own label, MaryRecords, released by Folk-ways. Part of the proceedsof the album will go to theBel Canto Foundation, afund Mary started to re-habilitate sick musicians.

Ray Charles has finishedfilming "Light Out of Dark-ness," in Dublin, Londonand Paris. The title song forthe film was penned byCharles with lyrics writtenby Rick Ward, director ofpublicity at ABC -Para-mount. A single will be re-leased in conjunction withthe film's premiere in thiscountry.

Johnny Tillotson willspend a month tour of themid -West on July 24, plug-ging his latest MGM LP re-lease, "The Tillotson Touch,"plus the single "Worry."

Many Manhattanites whoventured into the out-of-doors last weekend (11-12)were rewarded by two mem-orably acclaimed personalappearances. One was Bar-bra Streisand's bow at theForest Hills Tennis Stadi-um, which drew a crowd of14,000 plus. CKEY, ONE OF the giantsin the Bigland held anothersuccessful charity hop at Club888 in Toronto. Keeping in linewith the station's policy to pro-mote the best in local talentthe lineup included, TommyGoodings and The Big TownBoys, The Counts, Little Ceasarand The Consuls, Bobby Raeand The Dukanes, The Count-downs, and David ClaytonThomas. The vocal end of theshow was well looked after byThe Allen Sisters and JaysonKing with The Charmaines andBobby Goldsboro to make it aninternational evening . . . Oneof the more interesting promo-tions being done by a radiostation on the new Canadianflag issue is one by CKEY. TwoToronto High school studentshave set out on a hitchhikingtrip across Canada carryingwith them a new Canadianflag. Their purpose is to dipone of the blue bars in theAtlantic Ocean and the otherin the Pacific. They report sev-eral times daily by telephoneto CKEY and the stations spot-lights these calls. It's a goodway to get a cross section ofattitudes by Canadians of theirnew flag.

CHUM Toronto staged itssecond annual "Memory MusicMarathon" and again it turnedout to be a highly successfulevent. Listeners phoned thestation to list their three all-time favourite pops of the past,these were then featured on aforty-two hour "Memory MusicMarathon". This list will beused to guide the station inprogramming "oldies" for thenext twelve months. (Sort of abattle of the old sounds).

Mike Duffy, of the PatriotGuardian in Charlottetown P.E.I., is a big name in the musicbusiness in Canada's islandProvince. He has been instru-mental in starting the careerof a new Canadian groupcalled The Beavers. Their firstdisc "Chantilly Lace" (Lon-don) is picking up across Can-ada and looks promising. Thisis birthday year in Prince Ed-ward Island and Mike informsus that music is playing a verylarge part in the celebrations.

Canada's Government radiois embarking on a new serieson CBC radio to help teen-agers plan careers. Host of this

13 -week show will be Ian DeVoy. This will be a panel showmade up of three high schoolstudents and a guest repre-senting a profession or otheroccupation. With the problemsfacing the nation over thenumber of drop -outs this couldbe a very important series but. . . promotion by the CBCoften lacks the appeal neces-sary to steer the young listenerto soak up important informa-tion that could be most usefulin his adult life. Perhaps alesson or two could be learnedfrom "private stations" or in-stead of a teenage show cre-ated by adults with that feel-ing of "When I was a youngman" . . . perhaps they couldenlist the aid of a few oldteenagers to fill them in on"What's good for teens".

TORONTO In The Summer;music, music and more musicwill be the order of the sum-mer for Toronto Parks, thanksto the Toronto Musicians Asso-ciation, The Toronto Daily Starand the Toronto Parks andRecreation Department, Tor-ontonians will be treated to 112concerts plus four specials.Recording artists and thosewho could be recording artistswill perform in front of manythousands. Dance, rock, jazz,dixieland and military, they'llall get the break they've beenwaiting for.

CKLC, Kingston, is givingaway something better than achart. It's called "Disk" Agroovy gossip about the stars,published monthly. Shouldhave much appeal to the younglistener. Lots of pix and infoon the big names in music.

Dominion Day in Oshawaturned out to be a rollickingsuccess thanks to CKLB. Thecelebrating was centeredaround the Oshawa Folk Festi-val. A mammoth parade start-ed things off with dancing andfolk singing going on well intothe early hours of the nextday.

Rockin' Robbert's of CHSJ,Saint John, will readily admitthat Andy Kim "Give MeYour Love" (20th) is still thebiggest recording artist to hitthis Maritime area in a longtime. A local fan club, recentlyorganized, will no doubt makesure that Andy's next disc is ahit.

Ro-sina Lhevinne's Master Classin Piano; Ntalie Limonick'sWorkshop in Accomanimentfor Singers and Pianists; DonEllis' Workshop in Jazz Im-provisation and EnsemblePlaying, and Workshop in JazzArranging and Composing;Martial Singher's Master Classin Voice; the New York Cham-ber Soloists Master Class inEnsemble Playing.

The remaining three halfscholarships will be awardedin other master classes.

Maltby's "Threnody"Band leader Richard Maltby

conducted the Marine CorpsBand last month in Wash-ington, performing his firstmajor work for concert band,

called "Threnody." The workis a tribute to the late Presi-dent John F. Kennedy andcontains a narrative composedof excerpts from the Kennedyinaugural address. "Threnody"was first performed at Car-negie Hall in New York inMay. It was also done June 26in Washington by the RCAFBand. It was also performedat Iowa State University forstudents on July 10th. Warn-er's Music Publishers HoldingCorporation will publish thework in the Fall.
