Parent Bulletin September 9th

Dear Parents,

Welcome to first grade! We are busy learning and establishing routines. First grade is hard work. Please review your child’s papers and encourage him/her whenever possible. Today I sent home Scholastic Book Order forms. There is a variety of different books in there that are made just for us beginning first grade readers! Please send book orders back no later than Friday September 13th! You can also order online. Our class code is HBGZ3.

Morning News: Each day we write the morning news. The children have a chance for 4 or 5 children to share something each day. By the end of the week, we have all shared something! We use the news to teach skills such as sounds, names, punctuation, word skills, etc.

Reading: We are starting a new program called Super Kids! It is an awesome program and we are so excited to start it! The program covers all areas of words, phonics, spelling, handwriting, reading, and reading comprehension. Each week I will post what Unit we will be working on and what skills to be focused on!

This week we will be working on establishing daily routines in blending sounds together to make word family words, sentence dictation practice to build sentence structure, and handwriting. There will be more information at Back to School Night to follow.

Recess and Lunch: We have recess before lunch. Please make sure students wear sneakers or shoes with straps. Lunch can be purchased at school or can be sent in. Each student has a lunch ID number that they can use for lunch. I will explain more at Back to School Night. Last Tuesday I sent a menu home for the month.

Math: We use the Every Day Mathematics program. We have been working on establishing routines, learning different tools to use for math, counting on the number line, counting one more and one less, and practicing writing numbers. The students will have an online user name and password that they can use to access games to reinforce the skills we are learning. I will distribute the passwords on back to school night.

Special: Our special schedule is based on a five-day rotation. That will be sent out so that you know what day is with each date. Here is our schedule.

Day 1: Library Day 2: Music Day 3: Gym Day 4: Art Day 5: Computers

The students NEED to wear sneakers on gym and an art smock or old t-shirt can be sent in to store at school for art each week.

Social Studies and Science: Our Social Studies and Science unit will be alternating throughout the year. In Social Studies we learn about My School and my Community. We discuss different events and things happening around us. Our Science kits are to help us learn about different types of Plants and Air and Weather.

Okay so that is a lot of information to handle at once! Each week I will also add any events that will be happening and due dates and deadlines. Next week I will be starting homework. Each night the students will have one math homework and one type of phonics/reading homework. I will try my best to list the details of the homework each week in the parent bulletin.

The Parent Bulletin will be sent home each Monday. I can send a paper email or one via-email. Please return the form that asks what way you prefer to get information from me! Also, I will be posting the Parent Bulletin and Morning News on my website. (in case it gets lost!)

Upcoming Events:

Back to School Night is Thursday! It begins at 6:30! I will have plenty of information for you about or schedule and more in depth details about how my class runs! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE return the packet that was sent home last Tuesday! It has all types of important information that the school and myself need back!
