MAY-JUNE NEWSLETTER TRUMPET St. Michael’s United Methodist Church A Tribute to the Christian Family ‘You are my witnesses’ is a line which is preached on three occasions from Jesus, from Sunday, April 15 th through Sunday, May 13 th . We find this line being proclaimed once in Luke 24:48 which is the lectionary reading for Sunday, April 15 th , 2018. We also find this same line in Acts 1:8, and in Luke 24:48 on Ascension Sunday, May 13 th , which this year is also Mother’s Day. I think it is no coincidence that this line is used in order to celebrate Mother’s Day as well as the ascension of our Lord. This very line is appropriate for the celebration of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10 th , as well as Ascension Sunday. Witnessing involves seeing and mirroring another person’s life. Jesus obviously drives this point home during the last hours in which he would be with his disciples. You are to mirror my life in order that others may see you emulate my life so that they may also emulate my life. This is a bi-monthly newsletter, so I think that it is important to include a celebration of mothers on Sunday, May 10 th , as well as the celebration of fathers on Sunday, June 17 th , within this publication. For the purposes of description, we will call both celebrations a festival of the Christian home especially since the months which are being covered by this composition are May and June. I think that the primary source of love which we acknowledge and receive as children comes from the family. Our parents offer us Christ throughout our lives and we attempt to reciprocate their love with our own families and friends. Many parishioners who have an active involvement and participation in the church did so as children. In fact, many (such as Marisol and I) were told unless we were dying, we would celebrate the Lord on Sundays. There were very few exceptions to this rule! Many of you experienced this same philosophy in your homes. Now as parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, we simply have taught our kids the same rules that we were taught as children. In fact, we still come to church almost every Sunday, with no exceptions. A dilemma which the church must contend with these days is that families are constantly changing and are continuously evolving. Most people in any community are not involved in a church and the church must re- strategize how to open its primary unit in order to bring others into the community of believers. 40 years ago, the greatest strategy for a church was waiting for people to show up on Sunday mornings and families would do this. Today, the church must seek out community members if it wants to survive. In doing so, we have to be careful to describe family as community which is diligently searching to bring others in the fold and not just an inward circle of friends. 1

MAY-JUNE NEWSLETTER TRUMPET

St. Michael’s UnitedMethodist Church

A Tribute to the Christian Family

‘You are my witnesses’ is a line which is preached on three occasions from Jesus, from Sunday, April 15th

through Sunday, May 13th. We find this line being proclaimed once in Luke 24:48 which is the lectionary reading for Sunday, April 15th, 2018. We also find this same line in Acts 1:8, and in Luke 24:48 on Ascension Sunday, May 13th, which this year is also Mother’s Day.

I think it is no coincidence that this line is used in order to celebrate Mother’s Day as well as the ascension of our Lord. This very line is appropriate for the celebration of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10th, as well as Ascension Sunday. Witnessing involves seeing and mirroring another person’s life. Jesus obviously drives this point home during the last hours in which he would be with his disciples.

You are to mirror my life in order that others may see you emulate my life so that they may also emulate my life.

This is a bi-monthly newsletter, so I think that it is important to include a celebration of mothers on Sunday, May 10th, as well as the celebration of fathers on Sunday, June 17th, within this publication. For the purposes of description, we will call both celebrations a festival of the Christian home especially since the months which are being covered by this composition are May and June.I think that the primary source of love which we acknowledge and receive as children comes from the family.

Most people in any community are not involved in a church and the church must re-

strategize how to open its primary unit in order to bring others into the community of believers.

Through acts of compassion and mercy, parents offer Christ. Through acts of love and kindness, parents offer Christ. As Christians or little Christs our primary job is emulate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is easy to call ourselves Christians; however, our greatest call is to witness to the life of our Lord and Savior. We serve a risen Savior and we want to emulate his life and ministry for the people within our community.

On Sunday, May 10th, and Sunday, June 17th, we celebrate the love of Christ which has been channeled through moms and dads. Throughout their lives mothers and fathers have witnessed to the love of Christ through their generous acts of love, service, and gratitude. On these two days in which we celebrate the festival of the Christian home we give thanks to Christ for offering himself to the world and we give thanks to parents that have witnessed to his life, ministry, and actual or eventual death and resurrection.

MAY-JUNE NEWSLETTER

Rev. David Harriss

Financial ReportHow can it be April already? Our winter residents are heading to cooler (snow?) temperatures. Those of us who live here will have our fans and air conditioning on, including the church; so we need to keep our tithes current. Our summer months are the worse for giving. We need $5,100.00 a week to meet our budget.

Now for some good news. Summer Camp has $2,455.00 in their account. For the Naomi House, a check was written in the amount of $2,500.00, which was the amount Don had hoped for. We collected $2,445.00, $55.00 were taken from Missions unspecified, to complete the amount.

I want to thank the congregation for supporting ALL of our causes.

Love and prayers,

Judy Schnoebelen

(You will find a copy of the budget attached to your Trumpet)

Trustees’ Monthly Update

Last month we shared with you the many items the

NOMADS completed during their stay with us in February. This month we are sharing the expenditures and the resulting impact on our church budget. For 2018, St. Michael’s budgeted $1000 dollars for the expenses related to the work of the NOMADS. The total expenses for this year’s NOMAD visit came to $655.13. This is indeed great, because it came under budget. More exciting is the fact that one of the NOMAD couples, prior to their leaving, made a contribution towards the ministry of St. Michael’s in the amount of $300. With that unexpected gift, the impact on our church budget for all the work and updates completed by the NOMADS was only $355.13. Praise God!Recently, there have been concerns about the air conditioning system in the Sanctuary. There is no problem with the system it was only disengaged for a couple of Sundays because the outside temperature allowed us to reduce our need for air conditioning. Be assured, as temperatures rise, the system will be turned on and working as needed. Disengaging the system for a couple of Sundays, though for some it was a bit warm, allowed the church to save a couple of hundred dollars. Thank you for your understanding and support.

MAY-JUNE NEWSLETTER ROMEOS (Retired Old Men Eating Out Somewhere)

If anyone should want to take up the planning and coordinating of ROMEOS, please contact Lyle Ross. Thank you.

Just a friendly reminder: NO child/children under the age of 18 years is/are to be out on our campus without adult supervision. We have received a couple of complaints of children around the church and fellowship hall that were without an adult present. This is for the safety and protection of your children. Unfortunately, we have a very high sex offender count in our area. Help us keep all children safe. Thank you.

Nancy Stoway

We appreciate your feedback. In order to run things effectively, we ask that any suggestions and/or complaints be submitted to SPRC in writing and signed. We will not be able to address any suggestions or complaints if we do not know who they are coming from. Thank you.

Blessings,

Monday Prayer Group

The Monday afternoon prayer group has been meeting to pray for the Church and your prayer requests for at least 20 years. I cannot begin to tell you all the answered prayers I have seen or experienced myself. Our little group is shrinking! We welcome anyone who wants to join us. We meet Mondays at 3:00 p.m. in the library. God answers ALL prayers; not always what we want, but always was is best. Sometimes He says YES, sometimes He says NO, and sometimes He says YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDIG ME! But He always answers.

KIDS’ CAMP

Easter Sunday breakfast was a success and it was all thanks to our wonderful St. Michael’s UMC community. We raised enough money to ensure that the 7 children that are currently signed up to attend kid’s camp can make it to Mt. Mingus in July.We are truly grateful for all the love and support shown to our kids. We will continue to work throughout the year to ensure that we can grow our children’s ministries, and we will keep you posted on any upcoming events.Thank you again for all your love and support.
