Year 6 Newsletter Autumn 1 General Information Adults that work in our class are Mrs. Dunsire and Mrs. Kilburn Special days for our class this half term are: Monday – hand homework in Tuesday – Homework will be given out Wednesday- Cooking and gardening Friday – Outdoor PE English Our overall topic this term is called Amazing Adventures in Other Worlds. As part of this topic we will be looking at scenes from Harry Potter films – focusing on the description of the wonderful world created at Hogwarts. Later in the term we will write diary entries as a wizard at Hogwarts. We will then study the magical creatures within the stories and write non-chronological reports about them. Throughout this term we will also be reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in our class reader sessions and completing comprehension activities. In our Grammar lessons we will identify and use relative clauses, relative pronouns, adjectival phrases, similes, metaphors and modal verbs. Later in the term your child will bring home a piece of Grammar homework each week which will build on their learning in class. As they are now in Year 6 it is important that they complete this work in order to keep up with the fast pace of learning in the final year of Primary School. Maths In Maths this half term we will be mainly focusing on the number system and the written methods for addition and subtraction. We will look at the value of numbers in 6 digit numbers and work with numbers upto one million. Children will read, write, order and add and subtract these numbers to solve a range of problems involving money and measures. We will also look at numbers with decimal points up to 3 decimal points, rounding them to the nearest decimal point and multiplying and dividing them by 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000. Later in the term we will apply these skills to converting different units of measure. Towards the end of term we will be looking at algebra, using general formulae and looking at equations which can have a range of possible solutions. Each week your child will receive a piece of Maths homework and again it is vital that they complete this to build on the learning in class. Our hotspot target this half term is: To understand what each digit in a 6 digit number represents and use numbers with up to 3 decimal points. Creative Curriculum This term our topic is Amazing Adventures in Other Worlds. Most of the subjects will be taught through this unit. Science- We will look at the different classifications of living things and identify the key features- using short films by David Attenborough. Geography- We will use grid references to find our way around a map and compare the human and physical features of different worlds. Art/Dt- We will start using a sketch book, drawing different worlds and creatures. We will design our own imaginary worlds and portals. Computing- We will use algorithms to give instructions to travel through a world.
