In Juhu, BJP has put up banners of MP Poonam Mahajan, MLA Satam and

corporator Anees Makwaaney stating BJP and BMC’s K-West Ward have together started a vaccination centre in Rotary Club. Dr Ajit Pampatwar, medical officer in K-West, BMC, though, said, “BMC has not tied up with any political party. BMC is setting up a vaccination centre in each corporator’s ward. Ward number 71 is Makwaaney’s ward. We have not tied up with the BJP.”

BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said, “We will issue show cause n o t i c e t o t h e corporator. BMC cannot be pulled into such activities; we do not have a tie-up

with any political party or politician for vaccination.”

In a letter to all states on May 29, Manohar Agnani, additional secretary in Union ministry of health and family welfare, had said that as per Covid guidelines only four options are available for carrying out vaccination— government centre, private vaccination centre, government office to be run by government hospital, private office to be run by private hospitals, along with “near to home” vaccination centre for elderly and differently abled person, to be organised at group housing societies, RWA offices, community centres, panchayat bhawans, schools/colleges and old age homes on temporary basis.Aiming on municipal corporation elections next year, the political vaccination camps have become new attraction. In Borivali, BJP leaders Darekar brothers helped people to get vaccinated, paid and free both ways, by helping people to get appointments at various centers.

COVID-19 – people took to the streets due to survival challenges

salaries is a big challenge. Asking staff to quit their job is easy but again who will take responsibility for their living after this sudden market crash? My work has been dependent mostly on travelling outside and attending seminars, getting clientele, has literally come down to zero. It means, I do not know what is going to come next my way and how I am going to take care of my future.

But I have worked on calming myself down and looking at the current situation without becoming very emotional. Because becoming emotional will create fear for me and I will hardly be able to find solutions. Instead of crying out loud and complaining again and again, I am focusing on finding new ways to survive in my present and thrive in my future. I am working continuously up-skilling myself and trying to find ways to stabilize myself. I am contacting my friends and clients asking them if I can be of any help to them.

However, I would certainly like to advise the employers who are trying to get rid of employees that — this is the real time for you to show your humanity and stand by the needy. This is not the time for you to get rid of them. If you, as an employer, are facing financial issues, work it out with your employees. Ask them to accept a lower salary for the next few months until the market stabilizes again. If you do this, your employees will begin to trust you even more and will actually be willing to give their life for you in the future.

The biggest loss of employment in 2020-21 was suffered by the salaried employees as against the popular belief that they were safest in terms of employment and source of earning during the COVID-19 lockdown and subsequent restrictions. The situation is most likely to deteriorate in absence of any comprehensive job retention programme as is evident from the data

since the beginning of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic since February this year.

The latest CMIE report reveals that the salaried jobs registered a sharp decline during 2020-21 to the tune of 9.8 million. The total salaried jobs in 2019-20 were 85.9 million which by the end of March 2021 reduced to 76.2 million. It clearly indicates that all the initiatives of the Modi government for retention of jobs failed. It may be due to the ad hoc nature of the initiatives, and therefore the government clearly needs to learn from its failure to make some better strategy now.

The protection of the existing jobs is of paramount importance in the present surge of COVID-19 which may continue to make us suffer for some months from now. We may be forced to impose stricter restrictions on movements of the people than that has already been imposed, impacting around 57 per cent of India.

The national unemployment rate touched 7.97 per cent as per the centre's proprietary data, with urban areas witnessing higher stress at 9.78 per cent and rural joblessness at 7.13 per cent. The national unemployment rate stood at 6.50 per cent in March, and the number on both the rural and urban front was lower. The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a slew of pockets going under lockdown-like situation with only essential activities being allowed, which result in a chill in a bulk of economic activities and a resultant impact on jobs.

The country is reporting around 4 lakh new infections a day and over 3,000 deaths. In an address to the nation last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had advised states to look at lockdowns as a last resort, because of its impact on economic activity. Let’s see how much Modi or his ministers take him seriously and improvise economic conditions in India, at least they should render support to small businesses and unemployed youth

hospital and through the CSR (corporate social responsibility) scheme. Right now, citizens have to pay for the vaccins.”

BJP MLA, Ameet Satam, tied up with Apollo Hospital, which is charging each person Rs 1,000 for a dose, higher than the Rs 850 it charges on the hospital premises. So far, Satam has got 16,000 people vaccinated in Walkeshwar, Bandra and Andheri.

Satam told Afternoon Voice “We have arranged a camp at Shree Ram Welfare School in Andheri, very soon I will be arranging camps at Borivali and Kandivali. My intention is to serve people keeping all political differences aside. We are not at all aiming for municipal corporation elections through this drive. There is still one year time, I don’t think we need to rush.”

With Central government rules not providing a scope for political parties or leaders to tie up with private hospitals directly, these drives are being registered under an MoU between hospitals and housing societies.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Nilesh Bhojane in Navi Mumbai, announced free vaccines exclusively for 18–44-year-olds at a camp at Marathi Sahita Mandir, Vashi, on Thursday.

A pamphlet and registration form he widely distributed has his photo along with that of senior BJP leader Ganesh Naik and the party logo. Bhojane has tied up with Reliance Hospital, and will only provide vaccines to residents of ward 64, from where he is likely to fight the upcoming corporation election. “A lot of 18–44-year-olds are unable to book a slot on CoWIN.”

N Ramaswamy, director, National Health Mission, said government guidelines are clear and allow vaccination in housing societies only to facilitate easy accessibility for the elderly and especially abled people. “Private camps are not allowed unless this requirement is fulfilled, especially not for just the 18-44 age group,” he said.

Dr Satish Pawar, Directorate of Health Services, said “municipal corporations have to take action if private drives are organised for people who are neither elderly nor specially abled.”

BJP Parliamentarian Manoj Kotak has facilitated vaccination drives for more than 20 housing societies in Mulund. Party banners carrying Kotak’s name can be seen in housing societies where the camps were held.

BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha recently arranged a vaccination drive for over 250 people slated to travel abroad for studies.

In the last week of May, BJP leader Ashish Shelar organised a three-day vaccination drive with Apollo Hospital, with each person who registered asked to pay Rs 1,000 per dose. The camp was organised at Bandra Hindu Association, Linking Road, for 1,000 people.

AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI 03Voiceshe tussle going on between the Tcentre and West Bengal CM is becoming more and more of an

irritation and botheration for the public as the disagreement between the two has become sort of a street fight rather than a mere political confrontation.

The CM of Bengal will have to learn a lesson or two from her counterparts of the other states especially those ruled by non - BJP CM’s. They may be against the centres ideologies and policies but when it comes to serving the people of their states, they are ready to seek help from the central government, they demand what they want in a tactful and diplomatic manner, they put forward their plans and schemes and by all means make the center nod to fulfill their requirements. At the same time, they are bold enough to criticise the centre when it errs. This could be seen in the case of so many states where the centre ruling party is not even a part of the treasury or the opposition. Take the case of communist Kerala, DMK's Tamil Nadu, Jagan’s Andhra, TRS' Telangana or Naveen Patnaik’s Orissa. The list goes on and what one can find is though they are politically against the centre ruling NDA, when it comes to welfare of the people and progress of the state, they are ready to get the

editorExcessive use of mobiles

The craze for internet and smartphones in Mumbai and other big cities has created counseling for many. Apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Hike can lead to serious ailments like spinal disorders, neck disorders, loneliness, lack of communication skills, loneliness, sudden weight gain along with depression. It is more prevalent among boys and girls in the age group of 9 to 20 years. This is due to the fact that children are easily attracted to the Internet and the neglect of parents towards it, as well as the unrealistic use of easily accessible smartphones by children and the lack of parental control and attention to them are equally contributing to the decline of children. Excessive use of mobiles is dangerous for physical and mental health. For that, such virtual games must be banned.

Tough policyThe Indian people are well aware of

China's expansionist policy. The world has not forgotten China's outspoken

opposition to India's permanent membership in the UN Security Council. China is deliberately doing whatever it can to intimidate India, plunder India in trade, usurp Indian territory and disrespect the Panchsheel principles. The reason for his growing arrogance is its proximity to Pakistan and the tolerant policy adopted by the Indian government against that backdrop.

The Indian government needs to adopt a tough policy to end this usual atmosphere of tension. The Indian people must be taken into confidence and prepared to face any situation. Now the government should launch a campaign to teach China a lesson.

If elections can be held across the country, why not Board exams

which are so very important in a students career?

PM Modi's decision to cancel CBSE exams for this year seems to be a decision taken in haste. If elections can be held across the country, it is illogical to scrap Class 12 exams as they are so very important in the careers of students. The exams should have been postponed & away found out to conduct them safely. CA exams dates have been announced & they will be conducted in the first week of July. Why

not conduct 12th exams if other professional exams are being held?

Class 12th strident could have been inoculated on a priority & away found out to conduct exams with WHO guidelines of social distancing & other safety protocols in place. Premature decisions should be avoided as COVID is here to stay & we have to live with it for a long period of time. Maharashtra should go ahead with exams & set an example for other states to follow by conducting exams safely!

RTI fees and other government-fees requiring to paid through postal-

orders should be revised to rupees fifty uniformly to prevent heavy

loss in handling postal-ordersIt was only after revelation through RTI

application that Department of Posts discontinued postal-orders in outdated denominations like rupees 1, 2, 5 and 7 because of extremely low sale-figure and high handling cost. According to an RTI response, handling cost of a postal-order was rupees 37.45 to Department of Posts alone in the year 2011-12. Handling cost for clearing-operation of banks is even extra. It is highly illogical that public-exchequer may bear such extra-ordinary loss in handling postal-orders in denominations like rupees 10

and 20. Rather it is time that higher denominations like of rupees 100, 200 and 500 may be added to avoid purchase of demand-drafts in submitting various types of fees.

Government-fees below rupees 50 may either be increased or totally abolished. Or Department of Posts may issue special stamps like there used to be for licences of radio and TV sets for services requiring heavy use of postal-orders in lower denominations of rupees 10 and 20. Beginning can be done with introducing RTI stamps where presently heavy use of postal-orders in denominations rupees 10 is there. RTI stamps can be issued in denominations of rupees 2, 10 and 50. Presently copying-charges under RTI Act in amounts lower than rupees 10 is not feasible because of discontinuance of postal-orders in denominations of rupees 2. Even Central Information Commission CIC in its repeated verdicts has recommended issue of RTI stamps. CIC has also taken up the issue of RTI stamps with Department of Post administratively.

assistance and support of the centre. In the present scenario when the

whole nation and its citizens are battling with a deadly pandemic, states should unite with the centre and work as one force to mitigate the woes of the masses and eliminate the deadly and invisible enemy. Rather than doing it having revenge politics, disagreeing and crossing swords for each and everything and creating

chaos and confusion among the masses is not appreciable especially for a leader like Mamata whom at least some of the parties in the opposition alliance has plans to showcase as PM candidate in 2024. Let them understand that the public is watching and whatever the results will be after three years will be based on the assessment and evaluation going on now.

AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI 05NationIndia rose to challenges posed by

Covid-19, fought patiently: Amit Shahndia rose to the challenges Iposed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and

under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre and State governments patiently fought the virus, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday.

While speaking at the virtual inauguration of nine oxygen plants in Ahmedabad, the Union Home Minister noted several steps taken by the government to overcome one of the largest challenges in the second wave - the ten-fold increase in oxygen demand.

"Under normal circumstances, the country used to produce

about 1000 MT of oxygen. Within a month, the demand increased to 10,000 MT. It was a huge challenge to meet this 10-fold increase in demand, but under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre and State rose to the challenge and started our fight against this," he said.

"The production of industrial oxygen was paused in plants across the country and were diverted towards medical oxygen. Cryogenic tankers were in the country were limited but we brought in from across the wor ld and oxygen was transported in trains. About 15,000MT has been transported

by train," he added. He also said that after the first

wave, 162 PSA plants were approved from the PM CARES fund by the Prime Minister, along with an additional 1,051 plants.

"Along with this, 100 more PSA plants were also initiated by other ministries. In the coming days, work to set up 300 more will also be started," he said.

Shah also lauded efforts by the armed forces, Railways and scientists.

"Thanks to their efforts, this pandemic is receding slowly and demand for oxygen has come down as well. The number of recoveries is higher than new cases," he said.

government infrastructure worth Rs 520 crore and personal assets worth Rs 90 crore." Jena stated that Rs 66 crore is needed for the relief distribution work.

Highlighting the effect on agriculture, Jena said "The saltwater flooding in the coastal area of cyclone-affected districts has created problems for the upcoming Kharif crop. Scientists from the Odisha School of Agriculture and Technology and the Central Rice Research Center have been asked to study the effects." "These scientists are currently in the affected areas and are investigating the situation and reports will be forthcoming soon," he added.

Students will have results before admissions to colleges begin, says CBSE

he Central Board of TSecondary Education (CBSE), on Thursday, said

that evaluation criteria for Class 12 s tuden t s a re unde r consideration and it would take up to two weeks to arrive at a final decision on how to grade students.

“If students are not satisfied with the evaluation process, then an option of re-exam will be available for them after COVID,” CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi was quoted as saying by ANI.

On Wednesday, the Centre cancelled Class 12 board examinations because of the public health risk amid the Covid-19 pandemic. CBSE as well as other state education boards will now come up with revised criteria for evaluating the academic performance of Class 12 students.

“We are making sure that students do not face any issues when it comes to results. Want to assure students they will have their results before admissions to higher universities begin,” Tripathi added.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court said it was happy to note

that the government had cancelled the class 12 board exams, and directed the CBSE and CICSE to place on record well-defined objective criteria for assessment of students in two weeks.

A bench of justices AM Khanwi l ka r and D inesh Maheshwari clarified that it will not give more time for the placement of objective criteria as many students will take admissions in colleges in India and abroad.

The top court said that it will go through the objective parameters for the assessment of marks so that if anyone has objections, they can be dealt with.

The bench was hearing a plea seeking directions to cancel the class 12 exams of CBSE and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) amid the pandemic situation.

Private Hospital Psychiatrist doctor arrested police achieve breakthrough after 1 year in new born kidnap case

year after a newborn Awas stolen, police crack t he c a se a f t e r a

painstaking investigation and arrested the psychiatrist doctor of private hospital.

The accused has been identified as, Dr Rashmi, 34, a psychiatrist doctor in a private hospital.

Senior officer told media persons, “A year after a newborn baby boy was stolen from a maternity hospital in Chamarajapete, the police cracked the case and arrested 34-year-old psychiatr ists’ doctor from a private hospital for allegedly stealing the baby and selling it to a woman for Rs.15 lakh.”

A special team was formed with 20 crime team staff who were experts in detecting crimes the team were pressed into action and after a meticulous and painstaking

investigation a grass root level with a team work with the able guidance of senior officers and technology support.

The accused, Dr Rashmi, was caught by a team of police led by PSI, Srinivas KR, who analysed over 30,000 calls from the nearest tower before zeroing in on the accused.

During analysing the calls Investigations revealed that Dr Rashmi had taken Rs.15 lakh from Anupama, who was consulting her since a year.

The police said Dr Rashmi convinced Anupama that she would get her baby through surrogacy, but could not arrange for one and lied to Anupama and even gave the delivery date of May 28, 2020.

When the delivery date approached, Rashmi went around the hospital and zeroed in on Husna Banu, who had delivered a baby boy two hours ago.

She walked into the hospital as a doctor and walked away

with the baby. The special team of police,

with the help of the security guard and an Autorickshaw driver got the sketch of the suspect and circulated it, while focussing on the technical evidence.

Dr Rashmi had ca l led Anupama that she is coming with the baby to hand it over to her as soon as she had stolen it.

That was the clue which helped the police team to track her down. She also told Anupama that the woman died due to delivery complications.

A detailed investigation by the team the accused Dr Rashmi spilled the beans and it was revealed that she had huge loans, including money borrowed from her relatives in Belagavi, which she returned, the police said.

The baby has been traced and rescued and it will be handed over to the parents, the police said, adding that Anupama is being questioned and further investigation is on.

AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI 06WorldIsrael: Opposition reaches coalition deal

to oust PM Benjamin Netanyahu

Bill to remove per country cap on Green Card introduced in US Congress

rime Minister Benjamin PNetanyahu’s opponents announced Wednesday

(local time) that they have reached a deal to form a new governing coalition, paving the way for the ouster of the longtime Israeli leader.

The dramatic announcement by opposition leader Yair Lapid and his main coalition partner, Naftali Bennett, came shortly before a midnight deadline and prevented what could have been Israel’s fifth consecutive election in just over two years.

“This government will work for all the citizens of Israel, those that voted for it and those that didn’t. It will do everything to unite Israeli society,” Lapid said.

The agreement still needs to be approved by the Knesset, or parliament, in a vote that is expected to take place early next week. If it goes through, Lapid and a diverse array of partners that span the Israeli political spectrum will end Netanyahu’s record-setting but divisive 12-year rule.

Netanyahu, desperate to remain in office while he fights corruption charges, is expected to do everything possible in the coming days to prevent the new coalition from taking power. If he fails, he will be pushed into the opposition.

The dea l comes a t a tumultuous time for Israel, which fought an 11-day war against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip last month while also experiencing mob violence between Jews and Arabs in cities across the country. The country also is emerging from a coronavirus crisis that caused deep economic damage and exposed tensions between the secular majority and the ultra-Orthodox minority.

bipartisan legislation Ahas been introduced in the US House o f

Representatives to eliminate the p e r c o u n t r y c a p o n employment-based Green Card.

T h e l e g i s l a t i o n w a s introduced by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren and Congressman John Curtis and it is likely to benefit Indian IT professionals anguishing over decades of Green Card wait.

The Equal Access to Green cards for Legal Employment (EAGLE) Act, 2021 needs to be passed by the Senate before it can be sent to the White House for the president to sign it into a law.

The bill phases out the seven per cent per-country limit on employment-based immigrant visas.

The bill also raises the seven per cent per-country limit on family-sponsored visas to 15 per cent.

Its predecessor, the Fairness

for High Skilled Immigrants Act, was passed in the House in the 116th Congress wi th a resounding bipartisan vote of 365 to 65. “We all know that our immigration system is severely broken and it has been broken for decades,” said Lofgren, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship.

The basic framework for allocating immigrant visas dates back to the middle of the 20th century and was last seriously updated in 1990, when the Congress established the worldwide numerical limits on visas and the seven per cent per-country cap that still exists today, she said.

Taiwan says too early to talk of lockdown, but "no optimism" over COVID trendsaiwan's health minister Tsaid on Thursday it was still too early to talk about

needing to raise the alert level and go into a full lockdown, but the sp ike in COVID-19 infections on the island gave him no reason for optimism.

Taiwan has been a model for how to control the pandemic, but its increase in domestic i n f e c t i o n s , t h o u g h n o t exploding, has alarmed the government, which has limited g a t h e r i n g s a n d c l o s e d entertainment venues. The government is also dealing with delays in reporting test results, which has led to it revising its

total numbers daily.Health Minister Chen Shih-

Chung, speaking at his daily news briefing, said he was concerned about a rise in younger people get t ing infected, who may not be

taking curbs as seriously, and meeting when they shouldn't be. "There's no cause for optimism," he said of the trend in infections.

However, he said it was still "too early" to talk about going into Taiwan's highest alert level, which would be an effective lockdown, something the government has not had to do since the pandemic began. Next weekend marks the traditional Dragon Boat Festival when people often travel to see family members in other parts of Taiwan, and Chen said people should not be traveling if there was no urgent need.

the former US president shared h i s f i e r y speeches and statements after being banned by soc ia l media g iants , including Facebook and Twitter.

The page titled "From the Desk of Donald J. Trump" has been removed from Trump's website after going live less than a month earlier, his spokesperson Jason Miller told CNBC news on Wednesday.

"It was just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on," Miller said, adding that the webpage "will not be returning".

"Hoping to have more information on the broader efforts soon, but I do not have a precise awareness of timing," Miller said.

Asked later whether the move was a "precursor" to 74-year-old Trump, a Republican,

joining "another social media platform," Miller said: "Yes, actually, it is. Stay tuned!" The former president, who left office on January 20 indicating to run for the White House again in 2024, has long accused social media giants, including Facebook and Twitter where he had tens of mil l ions of followers, of nursing a political b i a s a n d c e n s o r i n g conservatives.

Facebook, Instagram, and other social media outlets also banned his account, alleging that his postings incite violence after a violent mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6.

AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI Travel

Where Things Stand With Covid in India

Before we give our recommendations on where to go when you visit India in 2021, let’s talk about more practical matters. Namely, the Covid situation in India, as well as the situation with the border. As of June 2021, India has recorded more than 30 million cases of Covid-19, as well as more than 350,000 deaths. This makes India the third-most affected country on an absolute basis, though not on a per-capita basis, given the country’s enormous population.

In spite of how difficult the virus proved to tame within India’s borders last year, officials chose to keep them mostly closed during 2020; this continues in 2021, as a massive second wave of infection mounts. Exceptions to India’s border closure, which explicitly prohibits tourists from entering for the foreseeable future, include students and foreign professionals with long-term visas, as well as essential personnel such as medical workers from other countries. Foreign nationals with Indian relatives are also permitted to enter, subject to some Covid-related restrictions. When will India allow tourists? Not until the medical situation improves significantly.

When Will India’s Border Open?

This is the 1,000,000,000 question! The answer, at least as of April 2021, is that nobody knows. While we have seen speculation online that India’s border could open to tourists from June or July 2021, this depends on the course the pandemic takes the next few months, particularly with regard to the vaccines that will roll out in hard-hit areas like the United States and Europe. It’s likely that travelers from these regions who wish to visit India will need to be vaccinated in order to do so. The new “variants” also remain an open question.

When will international tourism resume in India?

As frustrating as this will probably sound, we would recommend that you sit tight if you want to visit India in 2021. With nearly a dozen vaccines approved around the world, we’re already over the proverbial hump in terms of moving the world (and the travel industry) back toward normal; we would be shocked if we don’t have even the announcement of news by September or October 021. Obviously, visiting Leave Your Daily Hell often is a great way to remain informed!

Are tourists allowed in India?

As of June 2021, tourists are not allowed in India. However, foreign travelers with medium- to long-term visas for working, studying and other official business may travel to India, subject to Covid-related protocols including testing and quarantine.

Are international flights operating in India?

India has established air travel “bubbles” with around 20 countries as of June 2021, including the United States (although this has been suspended due to the second wave), Canada and France. Note that the existence of flights between your country and India does not guarantee your ability to travel, particularly since many countries imposed travel bans on India in response to the country’s massive second wave.

Can I travel to India from Canada now?

You can travel to India from Canada right now if you hold a visa (besides a tourist visa) and agree to adhere to Covid safety protocols. Tourists from Canada who want to visit India will need to wait until sometime later in 2021.

Can You

Visit India in 2021?

Where to Go in India in 2021

Delhi and The Taj MahalLocated in the dusty city of Agra, Taj Mahal

has remained one of the wonders of the world throughout many pandemics—we have no doubt you’ll want to make a beeline for it once this one has passed. I’d also recommend that you spend at least a day in Delhi, India’s hectic (but misunderstood, not to mention underrated) capital.

Goa Whether you visit India in 2021 or any other year, the beaches of Goa are a must-see.

While we personally prefer southern Goa beaches like Palolem (or even traveling south to Karwar, which is technically located in Karnataka), north Goa beaches such as Candolim are lovely, as is the Portuguese-colonial state capital of Panaji.

Mumbai Mumbai has a slightly better reputation

than Delhi, but let’s face it: Most travelers tend to avoid big Indian cities, no matter which one. To avoid getting overwhelmed, spend just a night or two here after you land in India or before you depart, sleep in cosmopolitan South Bombay, from which UNESCO-ranked Elephanta Caves are a short boat ride away.

Kerala Another destination to consider if you visit

India in 2021 is Kerala, a laid-back state in the country’s far southwest. Defined as much by flavorful curries as by enchanting landscapes such as the backwaters of Alleppey and the tea fields of Munnar, Kerala is a must-visit in any year.

The Himalaya Many people associate India with tropical

heat and spicy food, but few realize how many of its states and cities sit high in the Himalaya. How high up you go is up to you. We personally recommend Leh in the Ladakh territory, whose landscapes give it a feel that’s more Tibetan than Indian. The hill station of Darjeeling is also worth a visit, as is controversial Kashmir.

AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI 10Opinion

Palestinian Islamic Jihad Palestinian Islamic Jihad turned out to be a Dark Horseturned out to be a Dark Horse

Palestinian Islamic Jihad turned out to be a Dark Horse

resh round of escalation Fbetween Israel and armed groups from Gaza

has just completed. In this round, thousands of rockets are being fired towards Israeli cities and Israel Defence Forces (IDF) responded with overwhelming airstrikes. The biggest group and de-facto ruler of Gaza, Hamas got much of the attention in this flare-up. But it was a relatively much smaller Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) turns out to be the dark horse in this conflict. Despite losing top operatives and military infrastructure PIJ kept firing large barrages of rockets until the ceasefire came into effect. Also, PIJ rocket fire was very heavy and was comparable to Hamas in terms of both volume and range. This illustrates that PIJ has stepped out of the shadow of the big brother Hamas. Founded in the early 1980’s Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is one of the most important yet least understood Palestinian armed faction, both in terms of its

history and ideology. Designated as a terrorist outfit by the US and the EU both. It has grown to become the second-largest armed movement in the Gaza Strip and the third largest within the Palestinian Territories. The group has a reputation of being small and highly secretive, which makes it less prone to infiltration by Israeli intelligence services.

Hamas bears responsibility for running the day-to-day affairs of Gaza the coastal enclave often in news because of its Humanitarian hardships. Islamic Jihad has no such limitations and has emerged as the more militant faction, occasionally even undermining Hamas authority. The Islamic Jihad doesn't bother with all those issues of social work, welfare, clinics, and food. They only care about Jihad and are of opinion that everything else will be dealt with afterwards. Because of this increasing number of Palestinians see PIJ as less willing to compromise

than Hamas. PIJ is the smaller of the two main Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip and is vastly outnumbered by the ruling Hamas. But it enjoys direct Iranian backing, both financially and militarily, and has become the driving force in rocket fire and confrontations with Israel. Many times it has picked up a fight with Israel on its own without taking any other resistance group in confidence. PIJ in recent time has tried to outflank Hamas by presenting itself as a more radical opponent of Israel. It’s the increased support of Iran for PIJ which is making them more flamboyant as it’s a known fact that Tehran’s favourite child in Gaza is Islamic Jihad.

While Hamas falls further down into the hole of governance, responsibility, and negotiations. PIJ will not only have a justification for existence alongside Hamas but will also prosper. According to Israeli media

reports although Hamas is believed to have far more long-range rockets than PIJ. The Islamic Jihad is estimated to have as many as 8,000 short-range rockets, meaning it has more firepower to bring to bear than even Hamas against the nearby Gaza corridor. Also, most of the group’s weapons are locally produced now in Gaza. In recent years it has developed an arsenal equal to that of Hamas, with some longer-range rockets even capable of striking the Tel Aviv metropolitan area in central Israel. The group tried to overwhelm the Israeli state of the art missile defence system i.e. Iron Dome by the mere volume of the projectiles fired simultaneously. Many of the rockets are so cheap and easy to manufacture, in some cases requiring little more than metal casing and an explosive. That the group have been able to accumulate them in significant numbers. Even if Israel is able to effectively stops all the outside supplies

coming into Gaza. PIJ because of its homegrown capabilities can sustain rocket fire in large volumes towards Israel for weeks if not for months. Islamic Jihad has moved into entirely indigenous production, often manufacturing both the weapon and the explosives out of raw materials available in the Gaza strip.

Shortly after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in July 2007 the al-Qassam Brigades military wing of Hamas launched an extensive military operation to disarm the other organizations operating there. Only two groups were entitled to extensive “relief” from this campaign the Popular Resistance Committees and Islamic Jihad. Hamas leadership must be regretting this generous favour it did to PIJ. Because in return PIJ has most of the times has undertaken stand contrary to Hamas position. PIJ firmly believes that it has nothing to lose and everything to gain by escalating tensions with Israel as it will be seen as leading resistance against the Zionist state. While Hamas rightly believes at least for now that things need to be calm down with Israel. So, that Gazans can have some breathing space. But Hamas soon has to make tough choices otherwise it will be ousted from driving seat in Gaza. Hence Hamas has to take effective measures to prevent Islamic Jihad’s independent and sole benefiting activities. Because when Gaza will bleed from the Israeli onslaught then common people will be held Hamas responsible only as they are the administrators of the strip.

AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI 11Gadget

OnePlus Watch

ReviewWhat’s good

Design OnePlus has done a

spectacular job in designing its first smartwatch. The Watch looks premium, especially the moonlight silver colour variant (review unit), which goes well with most outfits. It has a solid build, complemented by a circular case that makes it look more like a watch and less like a toy. The top side of the case is dominated by a screen with thin bezels around. It is a touch screen with curved glass on the top to aid the watch’s gesture-based navigation. At the bottom, the slightly raised centre accommodates sensors for monitoring heart rate and blood oxygen, and charging pins. While the case is made of stainless steel, there is a plastic covering at the bottom. This makes the watch comfortable to wear as the temperature effect on the stainless steel does not pass on to the skin. The case has two buttons – the top one for the menu and the other (customisable) for fitness modes.

DisplayThe OnePlus Watch design

is accentuated by a bold-looking 1.39-inch AMOLED touchscreen of a 454 x 454 resolution. The screen supports sliding gestures; swipe down for quick settings, swipe up for notifications, swipe right to go back, and swipe left to access music player and information related to heart rate, stress, weather, steps count, etc. The screen is bright, vivid and has good sunlight legibility. It supports several watch faces, most with dark backgrounds that look dazzling on an AMOLED screen. The watch also supports custom faces, allowing you to turn any picture from your phone into a watch face background.

Health and fitness features

The OnePlus Watch is loaded with several health and fitness features, including the uncommon stress and air pressure monitors. Starting from

storing data — audio files, music, etc. That seems inadequate.

OnePlus Health app: The Watch is heavily reliant

on the company’s Health app, which is currently available only for Android smartphones. Though intuitive, the app seems to be

designed primarily to present the health- and fitness-related stats. Therefore, there is nothing more you can expect from

it. It lacks a built-in store to download additional watch faces. Moreover, the watch does not support any third-party apps and watch faces; so, you have to make do with the limited set of apps and watch faces that come pre-installed.

Operating system: The OnePlus Watch has a

sleek performance; thanks to the lightweight operating system it boots. However, the proprietary operating system lacks basic features. For examples, the option for quick replies is missing; the watch struggles with notifications; not all instant messenger notifications are received on the watch; audio controls for music files playing on the phone show up only when the app is active in the phone’s background; raise the wrist feature shows the watch’s home screen every time; and the watch gives preference to its speaker and microphone for calls even when the phone is connected with a pair of wireless earphones.

VerdictPriced at Rs 16,999, the

OnePlus Watch is OnePlus’ solid first attempt at making smartwatches. It gets the basics right and that is topped up by extensive health and fitness features. It delivers an experience that is a notch above regular health and fitness trackers. But it could have been a wholesome package if the software inconsistencies were also ironed out. In its current form, the OnePlus Watch is more about style than utility.

health-related features, the smartwatch has a multipurpose heart rate sensor, which registers heart rhythms during active and resting hours. Through this sensor, the watch also monitors stress levels. It supports auto stress level monitoring and has a dedicated breathing exercise built in; this comes in handy in bringing down the stress level. The heart-rate sensor also doubles up as a sleep monitor to register sleep quality. Besides the heart rate sensor, there is a dedicated sensor for measuring oxygen saturation in blood. The Watch is capable of auto-tracking SpO2 during sleep, and there is a provision to manually

measure it as well. As for accuracy, the sensor works fine and the deviation in reading is +/- 2 in most cases. Important to note that the watch is not a medical device, so the measurement data and results are for reference only, not a basis for diagnosis and treatment.

Among fitness features, the watch supports several activities, including running courses, outdoor run, indoor run, outdoor walk, yoga, outdoor cycle, indoor cycle, pool swim, and cricket. For outdoor activities, the watch supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and Beidou for location tracking. These satellite positioning systems

allow the watch to instantly fix location coordinates and accurately record data.

BatteryComplementing the

smartwatch’s dazzling display and useful health and fitness features is the on-battery time. Depending on how you use the smartwatch, you get at least a week of on-battery time on a single charge.

What could have been better

Storage: The OnePlus Watch has 4 GB of shared internal storage. Of that around 2GB is available for

Looking to make a toehold in the market beyond smartphones, OnePlus is gradually expanding its products line-up. Fresh in the company’s portfolio is a smart wearable,

the OnePlus Watch. Labelled a smartwatch, the OnePlus Watch covers a wide spectrum of features and services that one looks for in smartwatches. Among the most notable is the built-in storage for music, a speaker and mic set-up to attend calls, and a sensor to monitor blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). As a debutant, the OnePlus Watch seems to be a solid smartwatch. But how does it fare vis-à-vis peers? Let’s find out:

MONAFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI 12Gossip Lady Gaga postpones Chromatica

Ball tour until summer 2022Singer Neeti Mohan and her hubby Nihaar Pandya welcome first child

inger Neeti Mohan and Sher husband, actor Nihaar Pandya, have

become parents to their first child, a baby boy.

The couple welcomed the baby on Wednesday. ''Our family, @nihaarpandya and me are ecstatic to have welcomed our baby boy yesterday. To hold this little one in my arms is the most surreal feeling ever! Still sinking in,'' Mohan shared on Instagram on Thursday.

''We are overjoyed and thank everyone for the love and wishes (sic),'' the 41-year-old singer wrote alongside a photo with Pandya.

Mohan, best known for songs like ''Ishq Wala Love'' from ''Student of the Year'' and ''Jiya Re'' from ''Jab Tak Hai Jaan'', had announced the pregnancy on their second wedding anniversary, earlier this year.

Pandya, 37, also took to Instagram and said that both the mother and child were healthy. ''My beautiful wife gives me the chance to teach our little boy everything my father has taught me. She continues to spread more and

more love into my life each day. Most importantly, Neeti and our new born are both healthy and fine (sic),'' the ''Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi'' actor wrote.

‘'With folded hands, the Mohans and the Pandyas sincerely thank God, the doctors, family, friends and all well wishers (who) are very kind for showering immense care, love and support on us always,'' he added. Several personalities, including singers Shreya Ghoshal, Harshdeep Kaur, Jonita Gandhi, music composer Vishal Dadlani, and actor Gauahar Khan, congratulated the couple. Mohan and Pandya tied the knot in February 2019.

inger-actor Lady Gaga's SChromatica Ball tour got pushed back again on

Wednesday. It is now scheduled to take place in 2022. As per Variety, Gaga announced the postponement of the tour in a statement emailed to ticket holders.

"While some parts of the world are moving quickly to open up, others are not yet ready. So until we can confirm all global dates, we have to postpone The Chromatica Ball shows to the summer of 2022," Gaga said. The initial tour dates, originally announced on March 5, 2020, were a month-long, six-city stadium jaunt sprawling from July 25 through August 27, beginning at the Stade de France in Paris, followed by stadium engagements in London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; Boston at Fenway Park; Toronto at the Rogers Centre; Chicago at Wrigley Field; and East Rutherford, New Jersey at MetLife Stadium, with each date several days apart.

The gap between shows was likely due to a huge production that would take days to assemble and transport. The dates had been moved from 2020 to 2021, and now presumably 2022. Ticketmaster lists the dates as "postponed" with no rescheduled dates.

The tour is in support of Gaga's latest album titled 'Chromatica' which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and finally released late in May 2020. While it was a return to the dancefloor-styled pop of her early years and was enthusiastically received by fans and critics and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it did not match the chart success of her early albums and dropped from the upper reaches of the chart quickly.

Gaga recently returned from Italy, where she was shooting for Ridley Scott's 'House of Gucci', due for release in November 2021. Based on the book 'The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed', Gaga stars alongside Adam Driver who plays Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of the house's founder, Guccio Gucci.

Anna Faris talks about marriage adviceshe'd give to her 8-year-old son Jack

American actor Anna Faris has reflected on her marriage

experiences and the advice she would pass down

to her son Jack.

According to People Magazine, during the most recent

episode of her

podcast, 'Anna Faris Is

Unqualified', the 44-year-old actor sat down with author Glennon Doyle where she discussed her decision to initially get married at age 27.The 'Scary Movie' star first wed actor Ben Indra in 2004 and the two split four years later. In 2009, Faris tied the knot with Chris Pratt and the pair welcomed their now 8-year-old son Jack in August

2012. The actors later called it quits in 2017.

Looking back at her own decisions, Faris told Doyle that she would advise her son not to get married at a young age. "I do not know if it is too grumpy and cruel to say in a sense but if I could tell my 8-year-old son one thing that maybe he would stick to, I would really encourage him to not get married in his 20s," Faris shared.

"It should be illegal," added Doyle. Currently, the actor is engaged to cinematographer Michael Barrett, the pair revealed last year.

‘The House Bunny' star told People magazine last month, "We had an immediate kind of intimacy, We are both probably introverts in a very similar way. And he has two children and that has been awesome. I have really learned a lot about myself through his kids. It's been really rewarding."
