Intermediate Jazz Band
The Intermediate Jazz Band this year is full of keen and courageous improvisers! I’d like to extend a special welcome to Michael, Isobel, Tyler, Liam and Samuel, who are all new to Jazz Band this year and are doing an amazing job! We have tried quite a few pieces this term, only two of which are being performed this evening. You can hear both Jazz Bands perform again on December 17th at Winterlude, Seycove Jazz Bands, Chamber Choirs and Vocal Jazz Ensembles at the historic Shipyards.
Senior Jazz Band
Senior Jazz Band will be performing two jazz standards, Doxy and Misty – it’s purely coincidence that they rhyme! Doxy, by legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins, not surprisingly has some great tenor sax parts. This arrangement of Misty is an alto sax feature, and Carlie Hughes plays it beautifully. September seems like so long ago! We started the year with this Earth Wind and Fire tune, which the band requested last year.
Grade 8 Concert Band
The Grade 8 Band members have a big variety of musical experience. I’m really impressed by how far they’ve all come this term and by their determination to do a great job this evening. This band has also been learning about jazz and improvising. Robbie, Michael, Quinn and Aiden are all playing improvised solos in Louie Louie. Fireflies and Daddy Long Legs are two movements of a suite called Bugs! We are looking forward to performing the whole suite for our elementary feeder schools this February.
Grade 9 and 10 Concert Band
I started planning the repertoire for tonight’s concert on the theme of belief and belonging. Some of the pieces you’ll hear this evening may make you think about where our values and beliefs come from and how we cultivate the feeling of belonging, or togetherness. Overture on Canadian Folk Songs and Portrait Of An Old Country Town by American composer Rob Grice, paint two very different pictures of the people and places these songs come from. If we’re lucky, we have Kindred Spirits in our lives – those people who seem to understand our true nature (and love us anyway!)
Grade 11 and 12 Concert Band
Old Churches is a contemporary piece, which represents a real departure from the military origins of concert band. Old Churches depicts a scene in a medieval monastery, where monks call and respond in Gregorian Chant. While the setting is from 1500 years ago, the composer uses modern extended techniques, such as flutter tonguing, improvisation, key slaps and unusual percussion to create an atmosphere of darkness and mystery.
Variations on a Korean Folk Song is a classic work for wind band. It is based on the beloved folk song Ahrirang and is very demanding technically! This is a work-in-progress for us as we ready for the Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Banff this April. Many of the members of the Senior Concert Band have Korean ancestry, and in choosing this piece, I wanted to celebrate their culture.
Edward Elgar completed the Enigma Variations in 1899, and dedicated it, “To my friends pictured within.” Each movement pays homage to one of his closest friends. Nimrod is a character in the Old Testament who was, “a mighty hunter before the Lord.” This movement was dedicated to his close friend, Augustus J. Jaeger, who not only gave him much praise and encouragement, but also gave him the kind of serious criticism that everyone needs now and then, and hopefully receives from a trusted friend.
The composer Kevin Puts describes Charm as being, “music that conjures up magic, good-luck charms and such, and … that intangible quality possessed by certain people and places that truly can cast a spell.”

Special Event!
A major highlight of this school year will be hosting the Asahikawa Commerce High School Band from Marh 28 to April 5th, 2016. They are one of Japan’s finest high school bands, and the Seycove community will be blown away by their incredible performances. They are also some of the kindest, loveliest people you will ever meet! During their tour, they will be performing extensively, as well as experiencing life in a Canadian home, in our community.
We are seeking 30 families from the Seycove / Deep Cove community to host our guests in their homes. We hope to secure all of the families by Christmas. Your family is sure to make amazing memories by welcoming them and giving them a Canadian experience. Most of these students have not travelled beyond their own community and are extremely excited about coming Canada! Your family will be financially compensated to defray the cost of hosting them and making them feel welcome.
If your family would like to know more about hosting a pair of students from Japan, speak to Yumi Sudo at intermission, or please contact:

Assignment for every band student, due Wednesday, December 2nd (5 marks for completion)
On a separate piece of paper, comment on the performance of one of the bands you heard this evening, which you did NOT perform in yourself. Use musical terminology such as intonation, tuning, dynamics, ensemble, togetherness, stage presence, presentation, expressiveness, musicality, technical facility, ability, etc. to give both words of praise and something that you think they could make a goal to work on. Be kind and supportive. It should be a few sentences long and not more than half a page. Put your name on it and put it in the dropbox outside the band room by Wednesday, Dec 2nd. Be sure to write your name on it and to say which band you are talking about.
