Summary of role

Key responsibilities

Programme Development

Develop and propose opportunities for the solicitation of major gifts, including: determining ongoing relationships with prospects & donors; recommending designation and level of gift; identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation

Oversee an effective programme of recognition, involvement and stewardship of major donors Work with relevant teams and departments to Identify key funding opportunities and build

effective case for support Oversee and further develop the programme of trust fundraising and identify suitable funding

opportunities and projects for Big Lottery Fund applications Maximise the research resource utilising insight and prospect research to identify prospective

donors for cultivation Ensure consistent implementation of a rolling programme of improvements to administrative

support systems (BBEC CRM system, data-mining, gift aid, acknowledgements, tracking, cultivation and stewardship)

Ensure co-ordination of high value donor work undertaken across the organisation Support the development of the special events and cultivation events programme

Business Development and Relationship Management

Work closely with the Chair of the Fundraising Board and Board members to identify opportunities for developing major gifts

Support the development of a portfolio of high value donors of £100k + Work with the team to identify opportunities to develop gifts at the mid-level (up to £100k) Oversee the development of our Heart Pioneers programme To liaise and engage with senior BHF staff, trustees and senior volunteers identifying suitable

opportunities for involvement To utilise research and insight to inform strategy and identify opportunities for future

development

Line Management

Manage the major gifts team, building an effective and efficient team that delivers against set objectives.

Carry out annual appraisals and six month reviews to build personal development plans in line with the overall departmental objectives and targets

Budgeting and Financial Management

Undertake the budgeting process for income and expenditure ensuring effective phasing and targets are achieved / surpassed

To monitor performance through rigorously through use of targets and KPIs To plan and take contingency action as necessary To monitor income and expenditure budgets within agreed time frames including monthly

management account summaries, variance and trustee reporting

Strategy and Planning

To review existing activity and major gifts strategy and make recommendations With the team, develop annual major gifts plans to deliver on agreed targets and objectives To monitor performance through rigorously through use of targets and KPIs To contribute to the overall fundraising planning process and divisional strategy To work effectively with key internal stakeholders

Data and Database

Work closely with the database/CRM team to develop effective processes for managing the cultivation and stewardship of major donors

To record, manage and share data in line with the CRM strategy

Other Build and maintain effective relationships across the organisation To consistently monitor competitor performance in the charity sector and beyond To represent the BHF positively at all times reflecting our organisational values To work outside core hours and attend events as necessary

Person SpecificationKnowledge, training & qualifications

• Degree educated, or equivalent• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel • Ability to use the Internet, Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar • Experience of using a database for management of donor portfolio

Experience

• Major donor fundraising experience at a senior level• Significant track record of successfully dealing with influential individuals/business leaders and

trusts to secure significant gifts, thereby maximising their support• Demonstrable experience of personally soliciting and securing significant gifts• Sound track record of achieving challenging targets and managing budgets• Experience of managing a large team
