CeBIT-Trendspots: A glimpse of what exhibitors are bringing to Hannover!– Issue 4

On 14 March, CeBIT will open its gates in Hannover, with a host of companies eager to showcase thousands of innovations from the digital world. The CeBIT Trendspots offer a little taster of what you can expect to find at the fair. Issue 4 is being published today, but more are set to follow, right up till the start of the fair.

Communications with a cultural twistSennheiser is bringing its wide-ranging portfolio for business communication and conferences to CeBIT 2016. Leading the charge is the Culture Plus range, designed specifically to provide companies and organizations with comfortable communications equipment and outstanding sound quality.

Sennheiser is exhibiting versatile unified communications (UC) solutions in Hannover that offer an answer to the burgeoning demands on networked communications. Call centers in particular will appreciate the Culture Plus range, which has been designed specifically to provide companies and organizations with comfortable communications equipment and outstanding sound quality. The audio specialist from Lower Saxony hopes the new Culture Plus Wired range will boost the acceptance of UC environments in both the short and long term since, as Stefan Grewe, Sales Director

Telecommunications DE/CH at Sennheiser explains: “choosing the right headset is crucial for UC environments. In fact, it is only when the interface between the user and technology really works that staff can enjoy the benefits of unified communications and harness its full potential.”

Since agents in call centers face the daily challenge of working with multiple channels of communication, a networked system with cutting-edge UC headsets is by far the best solution for intuitively combining all the various channels. Sennheiser’s Culture Plus range is extremely comfortable to wear, delivers excellent sound quality and boasts an attractive design – in fact, the company is talking about the dawn of a new culture of communication that will help deliver rapid and lasting acceptance. The best example of this impressive claim in action is the SC 70 USB CTRL premium wired headset. It features a noise-canceling microphone to optimize speech clarity and soft leatherette or light acoustic foam ear pads that deliver maximum comfort. The SC 70 USB CTRL can also enhance sound using various profiles, while Sennheiser ActiveGard technology protects users from acoustic shock by preventing sudden spikes in volume. In his book “1984”, George Orwell describes a society where every single citizen is being watched by the authorities at all times. The dictatorship’s surveillance mechanisms – “Big Brother” – are everywhere, tracking citizens through every intimate detail of their lives. In the modern world, when we so often find ourselves having to give out our personal details here, there and everywhere, you could be forgiven for thinking that fiction has become fact. Indeed, there are more than a few people who willingly surrender to this dubious scenario, not least out of some need for protection – after all, Big Brother should keep an eye out for terrorists, too. Even more people, however, have had enough of handing over all their private information to anonymous institutions without any control over what happens to it.

Four graduates from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg are firmly in the latter group – and they are at the world’s largest trade fair for information technology to show how IT users can win back control of their personal data. The four friends are at CeBIT in Hannover to exhibit their project, Sengi IT, which will in future help protect everyone’s digital identity and boast a whole host of additional features – prompting the uni-leavers to dub 4 July 2016 the new Independence Day. It sounds very impressive and exciting – and more than a few CeBIT visitors will want to find out whether Hall 6 could harbor the beginnings of a little revolution.Martin-Luther-Universität, Halle-Wittenberg (06108 Halle, Germany), Hall 6, Stand B24, Topic: Research for the future

Young entrepreneurs from this year’s partner country, Switzerland, are sure to really take off at CeBIT 2016 thanks to their hybrid UAVs, which combine the flexibility of a helicopter with the range of an airplane.

Wingtra is a fast-growing spin-off from ETH Zurich and a response to a trend likely to explode in the next few years and see unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) gathering data in a whole range of industries. The hybrid UAVs developed by Wingtra are as versatile as helicopters but with the range of aircraft. They open up a wide spectrum of potential applications in agriculture, mining, parcel delivery and many more areas besides. For example, farmers could use Wingtra systems to cut their use of pesticides and fertilizers by as much as 40 percent. Wingtra can also help to identify pathogens earlier and compile fertilizer application maps and yield forecasts.

Up till now, the necessary data for these applications had to be collected by fixed-wing aircraft that need a take-off and landing strip, or at least a catapult. What’s more, landing these devices is a risky business that could result in damage that can easily cost thousands to fix. Wingtra, the latest generation of fixed-wing aircraft, consigns all these disadvantages to the past. The Swiss engineers’ UAV takes off and lands vertically, like a helicopter, and flies forward like an airplane, which means that – unlike airplanes – it can take off and land between buildings and in forest clearings. Thanks to the uplift on the wing, Wingtra has a range of up to 60 kilometers and it can also fly independently as a truly autonomous UAV. For the coolest computers in town! Thomas-Krenn. AG, a leading European online shop for servers, server solutions and quality hosting, is at CeBIT 2016 to showcase a prototype server cooling process that can make individual server systems and entire data centers far more energy efficient and quieter than conventional cooling systems can.

The engineers at Thomas-Krenn. AG have their sights set on a source of enormous potential savings. Greenpeace hit the nail on the head when it pointed out that, if the Internet were a country, it would have the sixth-highest energy consumption on the planet. Thomas-Krenn. AG has set out to help lower power consumption in data centers across Germany, which – according to studies by the Borderstep Institute – has been rising steadily since 2012. The company will be at the pavilion run by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs (BMWi) to exhibit the prototype of a new server cooling process that can make individual server systems and entire data centers much more energy efficient and quieter than its conventional counterparts.

Back in February 2015, the company’s engineers won a national bidding process for “Hot Fluid Computing – high-temperature liquid cooling for data center server components”, which was initiated by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and supported with funding from the BMWi. Optimizing climate-control and cooling systems makes sense, as they currently account for the biggest share of energy consumption in data centers. “Hot Fluid Computing” is the

process of cooling server components right where the heat is generated. What’s more, the liquid cooling system is integrated into building technology, so virtually all the waste heat from the servers can be used for heating or hot water. As a result, “Hot Fluid Computing” makes a double contribution to energy savings – first by recycling the waste heat from servers and, second, by eliminating the need for additional cooling systems, which means servers can run silently without any additional error-prone mechanical parts. Using the AppLink dashboard for Skype for Business, virtually any information stored about a particular contact in linked data sources including ERP, HR or CRM systems can be displayed as soon as a call comes in. What’s more, specific actions such as “new sales opportunity” or “new meeting” can be defined so that these can also be pursued directly via the client. The dashboards are set up and managed centrally by the administrator – the required data fields and relevant actions are drawn up in the dashboard designer using a simple drag & drop function before being rolled out centrally. If a contact is found in a data source such as Microsoft Dynamics, SAP or Salesforce for which a dashboard exists, this is automatically displayed in the Skype for Business client.C4B Com For Business AG, Gesellschaft für Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik (82110 Germering, Germany), Hall 13, Stand D35

From robotics to semi-autonomous driving and smart home applications, machine vision plays a key role in the development of the Internet of Things. Although increasingly powerful, energy-efficient and cost-effective processors offer great opportunities to compensate for the limited performance and energy resources of mobile and integrated computer systems, developers still have to spend a lot of time, effort and money developing tailor-made solutions for each task. However, researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz) are hoping to change all that. The Saxony-based research team is exhibiting the Cross-Platform Computer Vision (XPCV) framework at CeBIT 2016 to show how image processing systems of the future could be developed across the boundaries of operating systems and computer architecture.

With a modular approach to developing image processing systems, XPCV significantly reduces the complex development processes required for communication protocols and hardware-optimized algorithms. TU Chemnitz researcher Lars Meinel explains: “Thanks to an intuitive graphical user interface and an ever-expanding library of modules, even inexperienced developers can work with single-board computers such as Raspberry Pi to create functional image processing systems. Meanwhile, for more experienced developers, benefits include improved configurability, parameterization and processing chain testability.” The end results are reduced development costs and faster time to market for image processing systems, which means that applications for smart homes and other price-conscious markets are a real possibility.Chemnitz University of Technology (09111 Chemnitz, Germany), Hall 6, Stand B24

Security calling! The SAST GRC Suite from akquinet AG is already well established as a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for full SAP system landscape security in a business environment – and the Hamburg-based developers behind it will be at CeBIT 2016 in Hannover to show how the new SAST Security Radar (SSR) can now be used for real-time monitoring and smartphone alerts for critical incidents.

Based in Hamburg, akquinet AG is exhibiting at the IBM Germany partner stand at this year’s CeBIT with a focus on end-to-end security solutions for corporate IT. Already established as a comprehensive, cost-effective solution for full SAP system landscape security in a business environment, the SAST GRC Suite has been expanded. It now includes the SAST Security Radar (SSR) – a module for real-time SAP monitoring that can even send critical incident information directly to smartphones.

The SAST Security Radar (SSR) is designed to be connected to a higher-level security information and event management (SIEM) tool such as IBM QRADAR so that all SAP authorizations and configuration settings including system levels and log files can be analyzed in real time. As a result, any weaknesses within the IT system landscape can be identified and addressed. What’s more, to ensure security even when the relevant IT managers are on the move, the SAST Mobile Protect app issues smartphone alerts and provides information when critical incidents occur. Users can therefore see all the key details of the problem and take immediate action – for instance, by setting the authorization to “Cannot be changed” and blocking the SAP user in question.

Tesla Motors finds CeBIT spot on – with autopilot! CeBIT is traditionally the summit meeting for the smartest developers, so it’s no wonder that the world’s most innovative company (according to Forbes) is exhibiting there – Tesla Motors. And Tesla’s latest model is finding its way to Hannover with autopilot.

Just a few years ago, car-crazy Germany thought voice control for sat nav and a few other functions was the absolute cutting edge, even though the first systems weren’t particularly good listeners. Meanwhile, in the USA, K.I.T.T. – the miraculous motor of the legendary Knight Rider – had already shown how artificial intelligence can keep testosterone-fueled drivers on the straight and narrow. Now Tesla Motors is making a transatlantic trip to CeBIT 2016 to show what 21st century automotive engineering could look like – emissions-free, emotionally driven, suitable for everyday use and autonomous. Indeed, Tesla Motors is set to equip the Model S that’s on show in Hannover with its first autopilot functions, which will then be continuously developed.

Tesla Motors has long since extended its leading role beyond electromobility and is now at the cutting edge of development work

on assistance systems and on integrating vehicles into our networked world. The Tesla engineers are using the in-built sensors of the Model S to implement the autopilot – harnessing radar system, ultrasound sensors, front camera and much more besides so the elegant sedan can accelerate, brake and steer for itself. And although it’ll be a while before Tesla brings autonomous driving to the roads, the first testers have already reported that the system makes driving much more comfortable and, more importantly, safe – particularly for longer journeys on highways and country roads. The continuous development of the autopilot functions will also benefit everyone driving a Model S without undue delay, as Tesla Motors can update the software in its vehicles “over the air”.Tesla Motors GmbH (80331 Munich, Germany), Hall 13, Stand D85

E-invoices are on the up Thanks to the combined expertise of MACH AG and Bundesdruckerei, customers can enjoy the benefits of e-invoicing right now – regardless of format.

The deadline has been set. Legislators have decided that, from 2018, public institutions must be able to accept and process electronic invoices. MACH AG in Lübeck and Bundesdruckerei (Germany’s state-owned print shop) in Berlin see that as reason enough to put their heads together and focus on making e-invoicing available to public institutions as quickly as possible. The two partners, who are each exhibiting at their own stands have put something very special together for CeBIT 2016 in Hannover. They will reveal precisely what their collaboration entails on a joint tour on 16 March. Ivo Moszynski from Bundesdruckerei will set the ball

rolling by showing how various formats can be transformed into e-invoices before handing over to Jakub Buraczewski from MACH AG, who will explain the electronic processing involved.

The workflow runs largely as follows: Bundesdruckerei creates a central portal that can be used to send or receive electronic invoices at the click of a mouse, regardless of their format. If required, it will also take over the preparation of paper invoices, scans and PDF documents. Ultimately, only structured data is sent to the e-invoicing software of MACH AG, where it is automatically incorporated into the financial system. As a result, invoice data can be processed securely, quickly and on a seamless, electronic basis. Practical joint tests have already shown that the automation and recognition of invoice data by Bundesdruckerei, its transfer to MACH financial management systems and its expert, technical processing really work.MACH AG (23558 Lübeck, Germany), Hall 7, Stand A14, in cooperation with Bundesdruckerei GmbH (10969 Berlin, Germany), Hall 7, Stand C18

Only the cheese is full of holes in Switzerland Swiss-based Ergon Informatik AG is the first company to obtain the EICAR Minimum Standard certificate for its Airlock Suite – without a single anti-malware product in its portfolio.

EICAR (European Expert Group for IT-Security) was set up in Germany in 1991 to help improve the trustworthiness of IT security products. To do that, the Group created the EICAR Minimum Standard, which is based on specific requirements for IT security solutions incorporating three primary elements – compliance with data protection laws, transparency regarding communication

between the products and manufacturers, and assurance that the products have not been manipulated. Although the certificate was originally aimed exclusively at manufacturers of anti-malware products, developers working on other network security products are also to be brought on board. Ergon Informatik AG in Zurich has now become the first manufacturer to obtain the EICAR Minimum Standard certificate without having a single anti-malware product in its portfolio.

The developers from the Partner Country of CeBIT 2016 are understandably proud of their newly certified Airlock Suite, which fronts a comprehensive solution for highly secure web access management. A large number of financial institutions are already using the backdoor-free Swiss solution to protect their web applications, data and identities centrally – and now with a certified system. The developers are on hand at the CeBIT pavilion to tell visitors all about the intricacies of their Swiss programming skills.
