In this class you can expect to… try more writing techniques, especially by emulating authors who write in a variety of forms, like vignettes, list or collage essays, satirical news articles, poetry and short stories. You’ll get to

This class is awesome because… you get to be creative and express yourself. There are usually several guest writers, you’ll really get to know your classmates, and maybe you’ll even get published for an audience beyond the classroom.American Literature

This class is for students who . . . are college-bound and/or care about having basic cultural literacy on foundational American texts and ideas.

In this class you can expect to . . . learn about the American Dream and American Individualism, read some classics novels of choice, challenge yourself with 18th and 19th

century texts, and improve your writing skills through targeted lessons and practice.

This class is awesome because . . . we combine a study of literature with meaningful personal reflection: How does the American Dream shape your desires and your decisions? Are you a product of American Individualism?

AP Capstone: Seminar

This class is for students who…want to investigate real-world issues and strengthen their argumentative, written, and public-speaking skills.

In this class you can expect to…read all types of texts (fiction, non-fiction, art, speeches, peer-reviewed articles, and more), work individually, collaborate with peers, write reports and

arguments, and give oral presentations using multi-media.

This class is awesome because…you get to explore issues that matter to you and argue why your solution is best! Additionally, your final AP score is not based just on the test! Your score is made up of two papers and two presentations that you finish in April in addition to the test in May. You’ll also be eligible to go on to AP Capstone: Research.

Who this class is for, you ask? …This class is for students who want to read, write, and discuss the rhetorical “choices” that authors make as well as develop their own abilities to choose wisely in their own writing… guided not by fear and hatred of rhetoric… but by the wisdom of rhetoric.

Expect you will in this class to read and explore texts from a variety of authors and historical contexts. When done you are with this class, ready you will be for the challenges of college-level study!

Awesome this class is… learn you will to use and apply words like anastrophe!

AP Literature and Composition

This class is for students who…love to read and discuss literature.

In this class you can expect to…read The Great Gatsby over the summer, write your college application essays, and engage in lots of discussions about powerful literature and how it connects to our own experiences.

This class is awesome because…you will read books that will challenge you!

AP Capstone: Research

This class is for students who… took AP Capstone: Seminar and want to investigate a real-world issue while learning how to apply research methods and practices. You will then get to show your findings in a paper and multi-media presentation.

In this class you can expect to…work with an expert advisor, explore an academic topic, problem, or issue that interests you, and design, plan, and conduct a year-long research-based investigation to address it.

This class is awesome because…you get to decide your course of study! This is similar to a college-level senior thesis course that you get to do in high

school; no matter your post-high school plans, these are valued skills in the real-world.

College Writing

This class is for students who … are serious about learning what writing they’ll need to be familiar with before taking the next big academic step to college.

In this class you can expect to … complete practical and necessary college preparatory writing tasks, such as ACT/SAT test comparisons, college application essays, and college explorations.

This class is awesome because … you’ll get class time to work on essential college prep tasks others have to do on their own time, and you get a wide exposure to a number of college writing “must-knows.”

Contemporary American Literature

This class is for students who . . . like discussing modern, relatable themes found in texts.

In this class you can expect to . . . choose modern multicultural texts, read a play as a class, engage in books groups with peers, analyze music lyrics as text and participate in

a poetry workshop.

This class is awesome because . . . the texts are fresh and engaging, there are multiple opportunities for personal expression through writing and it’s a low-homework class.

Creative Writing

This class is for students who… love to express themselves through writing and want to try a variety of creative forms.

In this class you can expect to… freewrite in experimental styles that tap into your imagination, explore unconventional forms and

emulate great writers. You’ll read books of your choice and create original works inspired by the author’s style.

This class is awesome because… you’ll share your creations regularly in a writing group, encourage each other and see lots of improvement in your writing and communication skills. Your final is self-designed writing, allowing you to explore topics and styles that are meaningful to you. Sometimes guest writers even teach the class.

Media Studies

This class is for students who . . . care about the truth and want to understand how media is both manipulated and influential upon society.

In this class you can expect to . . . analyze media from TV news to social media feeds, from newspapers to Twitter bots, public radio to popular memes; compare

and contrast different forms of media, especially variations on the same story; study the power of language on human behavior; analyze and evaluate persuasion; and debate real-world current issues.

This class is awesome because . . . it’s very “real world” and relevant. This class is important because. . . fake news.Poetry

This class is for students who… love to read, write and discuss poetry.

In this class you can expect to… learn from great poets, whether they’re classic literary legends or local slam champions. Classmates explore poets in depth and teach each other all about them, creating original artwork and poetry inspired by their writing. You will leave the class with a portfolio of original poems and lifelong inspiration.

This class is awesome because… you’ll discuss ideas about poetry through Socratic seminars, express your unique self as you experiment with all sorts of themes and styles, and really get to know your classmates. Sometimes visiting writers even lead the class.

Protest Art and Literature

This class is for students who…are curious about how artists, musicians, poets and writers have contributed to and/or inspired revolutions.

In this class you can expect to…read, listen to music, discover art, and immerse yourself in different political and social movements.

This class is awesome because…you will design your own artistic protest project!

Science-Fiction and Fantasy

This class is for students who . . . enjoy getting immersed in science-fiction, fantasy or futuristic stories, be they in books, on screen or even in games.

In this class you can expect to . . . read books of choice, pick a classic dystopian novel to read in book groups, write original and fan fiction stories, watch and analyze some sci-fi and fiction movies and do a research project on themes commonly found in these stories.

This class is awesome because . . . you get free-reading time in class, the stories are both adventurous and thought-provoking, and you get to share and discuss favorite books with your peers!

Your Literate Life (Reading for Fun)

This class is for students who…wish they had more time to read books of their choice.

In this class you can expect to…read a lot! You’ll set reading goals and have conversations about your reading.

This class is awesome because…you get to read! You get to read a lot! Books of your choice! Other kinds of writing! Think of the possibilities!

Visual Literacy

This class is for students who…like Batman are awesome…and are interested in learning about visual texts such as comic books, photography, and film.

In this class you can expect to…become more awesome but not as awesome as Batman…by exploring how these narrative texts present and manipulate traditional models of space, time, and motion.

This class is awesome because…I am Batman and I say it is awesome…and because…nope no because... Batman’s word is enough! To the BATCAVE! (Also awesome because you get to learn about the invisible power behind static images.)

World Mythology, Folklore and Fairytales

This class is for students who…are curious about our world and the stories that have shaped humankind.

In this class you can expect to…explore myths, folklore and fairytales from all over. You’ll be on the hunt for patterns and symbols that transcend borders

and cross cultures.

This class is awesome because…you will create a multi-media presentation on a theme or region of the world of your choice.
