Job Description

Post: Child Protection Officer and Deputy DSL in relation to Child Protection

Responsible to: SENCO and Designated Safeguarding Lead

Grade: Point (Term Time Only plus 10 flexible Days. A 37 hour week between the hours of 8.00 and 5.30)

Job Purpose

To support the work of the SENCO/DSL in all matters relating to child protection, including mentoring and attendance work

To work with parents/carers, under the supervision and direction of the DSL/SENCO to achieve positive and improved outcomes and for individual pupils and families.

1. To support the DSL/SENCO in all matters relating to Child Protection up to and including Level 4

2. To work in partnership with, and alongside Family Engagement Workers, under the direction of the DSL/SENCO to mentor individuals and groups of pupils

3. To lead and manage pupil attendance, policy and procedure across the school. 4. To lead, monitor and report on initiatives to ensure attendance above the National

averages.

1. Main Duties - To support the DSL/SENCO in all matters relating to Child Protection up to and including Level 4

Attend (as directed) Child Protection Conferences and Core Groups, participating in the sharing of information to all relevant agencies and workers in order to share with relevant colleagues within school

Do be the first point of contact within school and via safeguard software for safeguarding concerns in the absence of the DSL

To be the immediate point of contact within the school to receive and deal with MASH calls, MARAC requests and PVPs

To attend Strategy meetings as and where necessary as directed by the DSL/SENDCO and SLT

To attend Blackpool Safeguarding Children’s’ Board meetings in conjunction with the DSL/SENDCO

To provide reports for all relevant agencies for children register as CIN/CP.

To work with the DSL/SENCO to refer to external agencies in order to provide support where specialised interventions are required

To feedback to the DSL /SENCO and support in the production of a termly governors report.

Maintain electronic records for communications, meetings and actions taken for children on the CIN/CP register.

Work under the direction of the DSL/SENco and with the CP team to ensure have knowledge of and adhere to the principles and protocols of effective child protection.

Ensure all vulnerable pupils have equal opportunities to learn and develop. Comply with all the requirements of Health and Safety legislation. Contribute to the termly reports to Governors and SLT on Child Protection.

2. Main Duties:- To work in partnership with, and alongside Family Engagement Workers, under the direction of the DSL/SENCO to mentor individuals and groups of pupils

Develop 1:1 mentoring relationships to support pupils experiencing difficulties

that may impact on their learning, wellbeing, safety or social and educational development. Pupils to be identified and referred by DSL/SENCO and class teacher

To report back to parents/carers and class teacher of children under the mentoring programme.

Liaise with parents/carers to advise and provide support for behaviour and social and emotional needs to ensure consistency in approaches between school and home.

To identify children in need of further or external support. To work with groups of identified children and class teachers, both in class and

over the lunchtime period, to develop strategies in managing social, emotional and behavioural needs.

3. Main duties:- To lead and manage pupil attendance, policy and procedure across the school. To lead, monitor and report on initiatives to ensure attendance above the National averages.

To monitor attendance across the school, identifying any children with attendance below the school’s agreed figure.

To ensure first day contact/calls for absences are carried out and reported on the registration system.

To monitor punctuality and late collections of children across the school and where necessary support families to improve this.

To supervise children who have not been collected from school between the times of 3.30pm – 5.30pm and to liaise the relevant agency.

To secure positive family involvement to improve identified children’s attendance and to keep families informed of the child’s needs and progress.

To refer children with persistent low level attendance, below an identified figure, to the Pupil Welfare Officer.

Support pupils returning to school following exclusion or prolonged absence. To provide advice to support parents and carers in maintaining pupil health and

hygiene. To investigate and lead on new and developing initiatives across school to

promote and encourage increasing levels of attendance above the National average, including leading this area in assemblies.

To work collaboratively with other schools and agencies to encourage and develop an outstanding level of attendance within school.

Under the direction of the DSL, work collaboratively with the CP team to develop and review effective school attendance policies and procedures.

Analyse and evaluate data/information and produce reports on attendance, which may be required for court proceedings.

Report on attendance to DSL/SENCO and school governors

Person Specification

Job Title: Child Protection Officer

Essential Knowledge, Experience and Skills

NVQ Level 4 qualification and extensive experience in the relevant field. Full working knowledge of relevant policies/codes of practice and understanding of

legislation specifically relating to Safeguarding and Child Protection. Trained to Level 2 Child Protection procedures Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively influence decision making,

using negotiating skills, when working with staff, pupils, parents/carers and multi-agency professionals.

Experience of:1. Report writing including analysis of data.2. Working with parents/carers in a school setting and on home visits.3. The role of Lead Practitioner in the CAF/GIR process and the ability to facilitate

multi-agency working.4. Working to improve attendance.5. Working with pupils in a primary school setting.
