PRESENTATION

by Jacs Betlem (professional film editor) “Narration - from Storytelling to Placement in the Edit” More info -p 6

Our guest presenter this month will be Jacs Betlem. Thank you, Jacs for agreeing to visit our club once again. Jacs (Jacomiene) Betlem has worked as a Film Editor, as well as a Sound Editor (both in dialogue and

effects) for over thirty years. Her long career included 17 years at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and 16 years as a freelancer. Her list of editing credits includes ‘GP’, ‘Police Rescue’, ‘Quantum’ and ‘Animal Hospital’ as well as Logie award-winning programs, such as ‘Backyard Blitz’ and ‘The Mole’. I would like to thank our committee for their years of service to our club, and as many of you know, the commit-tee has serviced the club in a very profes-sional way and has given outstanding

service not only presenting interesting nights, but have organised great outings, Christmas parties, fabulous guest speakers, wonderful newsletters, competitions, secretarial work, and tremendous book-keeping that our treasurer has found time to do, in spite of the many rising costs that occur each year, and now have secured a new club room for us to have our club nights in.

Stay Focused and Start Shooting. Bob Hallett President

Last month’s guest presenter Sarah Foukas, owner of Macarthur Film Studios, brought a group of eight student actors to show us how she prepares the actors with direction. Thanks to you Sarah, and your selective group, the ‘Elite Acting Troupe’ (Russell, Jessica, Emily, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Madison, Matilda and Kaitlyn) who gave such wonderful performances. It was also nice to see some of our members taking up the challenge in directing the students their way with the plays that they brought along to show us.

Many of our committee members have played a major role in this department for over 14 years, and now would like to stand down and let some of you take over the reins for a while. The club must have a President, Secretary and Treasurer to continue, and of course a committee as well. I believe some of

the existing committee will still be standing. I would continue as President in this role, but due to my wife’s health I must stand down for a while as I will find it hard to be away at night, as Margo now needs constant care.

Please consider looking at a position on the committee, as our club could fold if positions are not filled when our next election is held (in July). As I would like to continue as a member of our great club, (and I know so would you all), it would be a shame to let this club disappear because of lack of support! Please consider a position and keep the club running.

From the

Vice President

Be inspired and

Keep the Batteries Charged!!

Mark Franks

Vice President

As one member of the

committee that is stand-

ing for re-election, I am

looking forward to work-

ing with new committee

members, so get your

nominations in and help

guide the club in the

years ahead.

Also, this meeting is your last

chance to enter a video for the first

competition of 2016. We have a few

entries already and few more would

be welcomed.

I'm hoping we get to see some “What’s in the

Garden?” videos this month.

As the season changes, it

makes for video of great

changes in mood, as

plants change into their

winter livery… and just

maybe … some of the

wattle start to bloom,

golden leaves on the ground,

and shots of glistening dew in the morning light!!

Gather your shots, and make a presentation at any

meeting.

TREASURE

ISLAND

...cont. next page

There are only two more club meetings before the Annual General meeting and the Election of the Management Committee of South West Video Club for the period 1st July 2016 to 30th June 2017 which will take place at our meeting on Wednesday 13th July. At that time, your present committee will "stand down" from their positions and will be replaced by those members who have nominated to be part of the incoming committee. As members are aware, there is no need to vote unless more than one person nominates for any one position. Six members of our present committee have announced that they WILL NOT be nominating for any position on the 2016-2017 committee at the coming elections for various reasons, including the fact that some committee members are looking for a "break" after many years service.

The retiring committee members have accumu-lated 73 years of service between them and are listed as follows in order of years served on the committee.

DAVID TRAN: David was a founding member of our club which commenced in July 2001 and has held the position of Technical Co-ordinator since the club’s inception (Total 15 years).

JAN HUDSON: Jan has held the position of Treasurer since July 2002, having replaced the founding treasurer Arnold Yin (Total 14 years)

MAX MILGATE: Max has held the positions of Editorial Co-ordinator and Public Officer from September 2002 until June 2013 and club Secretary from July 2013 to June 2016 (Total 14 years)

THE RULES OF THE CLUB CONSTITUTION STATE: "THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE OF THE CLUB MUST CONSIST OF A PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT, SECRETARY AND TREASURER, AND UP TO FIVE ORDINARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS". Mark Franks, Trish Glossop and Ron Potter will nominate for re-election on the incoming committee for the following positions: Mark Franks as President, Trish Glossop as Vice President and Ron Potter as Competition Manager.

THEREFORE WE REQUIRE NOMINATIONS TO FILL THE ROLES OF SECRETARY AND TREASURER. THE CONSEQUENCE OF NOT FILLING THESE TWO IMPORTANT POSITIONS IS THE FOLDING OF OUR CLUB, SO PLEASE GIVE SERIOUS CONSIDERATION TO NOMINATE IF YOU WOULD LIKE OUR CLUB TO CONTINUE OPERATING.

Nominations are also required to fill the roles of Technical Co-ordinator and Editorial Officer. SHOULD YOU WISH TO NOMINATE FOR ANY OF THE ABOVE POSITIONS, PLEASE CONTACT MAX MILGATE (SECRETARY) .

REINFRID LANGMANN; Reinfrid

2001 until June 2005, Vice President

from July 2005 - June 2010, President

Until then,

The monthly Lucky Member Draw has been a successful revenue raiser for our club and I would like to thank those members who support us

by purchasing tickets in this draw which assists in our costs to provide tea, coffee biscuits etc.

That's all for now, and I look forward to catching up with members at our next club meeting on the 11th May 2016…….

‘EDIUS’ User Group Report

I would like to start this by saying a few things relating to Edius 8.2 and the problem with Windows 10… there is none! The forced update from Microsoft at the most improper moments is very upsetting. I know of a few members who had the same problem as me, in as far as that Microsoft decided to update our computers without our permission. In my case my wife was on the internet phone to my sister when Microsoft decided to update my computer, thereby disconnecting the phone without any information. Enough of this. Let me now go on to Edius 8.2. Well members, I can now say for sure that Edius 8.2 works without problems on the new platform from Microsoft. I also have tried to see if all the plug-ins are still working, and again I have to say I found no problems. All my ProDAD plug-ins are working quite fine. So you don't have to worry with either Widows 10 or (and more importantly) Edius 8.2.

I have been in contact with Matt Scott, one of the Edius trainers. You can see him in You-tube. He has some tutorials for Edius, including Edius 8.2. We all had a good look at the additions to Edius 8.2 and I must say that all members present appear to have been most impressed with the new Primary Colour correction and the Tracking. I hope that at our next meeting some of the members will be able to take part in some demon-strations of what they found useful in the Edius 8.2. Please note that there will be no Edius User Group meeting in June, as the first Wednesday will be taken over by the general club meeting. So until we meet again on the 6th July, get yourself used to the new Edius so we can have some fun and have a great time. Like I always say… “a user group can only work if all those members participate instead of just sitting there and watch others doing the work”.

That now brings me to the end of my part of the newsletter.

Until we meet again in July,

Make movies, make Friends.

Reinfrid Langmann

At this month’s meeting, we will have the pleasure to welcome back to our club a

highly experienced professional editor of film and video, Jacomiene Betlem

(known as ‘Jacs’) as our guest who will be discussing and demonstrating

“Narration - from storytelling to placement in the edit”.

Jacs has been involved in video and sound editing for over 30 years, and her

impressive CV is filled with dozens of TV series which she has edited for all the

major TV stations in Australia and overseas, starting as far back as Homicide, and includes the multi-award-

winning series ‘Brides of Christ’, feature film ‘Dallas Doll’, as well as reality shows and documentaries.

The various formats used by Jacs have been 16mm and 35mm film, the Grass Valley Group offline linear

system, AMS Audiofile, Final Cut Pro, and AVID Media Composer.

Not only does Jacs have a Diploma of Visual Arts, majoring in film, Certificate of Film and Television Tech-

niques, qualifications in Creative Editing, but she has also been a Dance Instructor (Ballet, Tap, Jazz and

Modern Ballet) with the Society of Australian Teachers of Dancers!

As a personal friend of mine, Max’s and of my sister Florence, I know that Jacs is very much looking forward

to returning to our friendly club and sharing her experiences with us, as well as answering any questions you

may have.

……………………………………………...

What a wonderful fun-filled night we enjoyed with Sarah Foukas, (owner, and

head teacher of Macarthur Film Studios) and her eight delightful student actors who

demonstrated the skills of the auditioning process and working on set. These actors

form a selective group, suitably named the ‘Elite Acting Troupe’ from the Studios’

attached acting school, ‘Stage and Screen Academy’. Sarah directed her actors in

two short scripts- a drama and a comedy.

Have fun sharing knowledge.

Josie Milgate Editorial Officer/Librarian

NOTE:

Our JUNE MEETING will

NOT be held on the second

Wednesday in the month

due to the unavailability of

that night at our Meeting Place –WATTLE

GROVE YOUTH CENTRE. The meeting

will be brought forward to WEDNESDAY,

6th JUNE in place of the Edius User Group

meeting night, which won’t be held in June.

This was followed by some of our members directing the same scripts. It was great to see our members take turns in ‘directing’ such responsive, disciplined, respectful and talented young people.

I know that our president Bob Hallett was ‘in his element’ sharing his acting experience (having acted in many TV productions in his younger days, as well as the many years he spent as a film director), while

working with the ‘drama’ group. Trish Glossop (and several other members) had a hilarious time directing the ‘comedy’ group. There were valuable lessons to be learned, as well as lots of fun to be had.

It was a such a pleasure meeting Sarah, her ‘Elite Acting

Troupe’, the proud parents who brought their talented

children to entertain us, as well as Sarah’s dad Nick who

took many photos on the night (several shown on the

following page).

We thank them all for visiting us, and we look forward to

our visit to Macarthur Studios sometime in the future.
