CHRIST’S KINGDOM

FIRST alone University is a place where students explore what God has in store for their

futures. Regardless of where a student stands with questions of faith, we believe God

wants to work in students through their classroom experiences, activities, athletics,

relationships, residence life, and spiritual life to draw them to Christ’s purposes. This

exploration doesn’t just prepare them for the kind of jobs God has fitted them for, it

develops them into the types of persons God wants them to be in their relationships,

communities, families, and churches. We support students as they explore and

develop their beliefs. In this way we prepare students not only for jobs, but for life. In

the workplace and beyond, talent and skill matter, but it is also our beliefs, attitudes,

and values that turn conviction into action and matter most.

ACADEMICS alone University prides itself in being a community of learning. As a student, you’ll learn from your peers, your faculty, and your resident directors—as well as the people who make your meals, pray with you, and serve you in the financial aid office.

You’ll be challenged to ask good questions. You’ll be pushed to think in new and different ways. You’ll be called to embrace a pursuit of knowledge that explores the larger world and your place in it with courage, integrity, joy, and wonder.

If you’re searching for an education that encourages the integration of faith and learning, an education that will prepare you for a successful and meaningful career—and life—consider Malone.

M

As a Christian university with a highly respected liberal arts

core, Malone is deeply committed to intellectual enrichment in the

context of the Christian faith. A Malone education will

challenge you to:

Understand and critically engage those bodies of knowledge and cultural influences that have shaped the world.

Understand the biblical, historical, and theological foundations of the Christian faith.

Think critically and creatively and communicate effectively in multiple contexts.

Attain expertise in at least one profession or academic discipline and lay the foundation for meaningful work or further studies at the graduate level.

Explore the implications of the Christian faith for all areas of living, including intellectual, spiritual, and community pursuits.

A complete list of our majors, minors, and pre-professional programs can be found on the inside back cover.

STuDy AbROAD Through our Center for Cross-Cultural Engagement, you’ll be encouraged to go away—and then come back! We’ve partnered with respected programs in higher education (especially the CCCU’s best Semester Program) —to provide students with opportunities to study abroad. Wherever your interest, we are able to connect you with a program that allows for amazing growth in every area of your life!

If you’re more interested in short-term experiences, called “service-learning” trips at Malone, we partner with international hosts who have compassion, experience, and knowledge of the people and countries we visit. Trips are created around your potential to learn, both about the culture you visit and from the nationals who host you.

The service projects on trips are designed by nationals of the host countries to address real needs. Recent destinations include Italy, India, Romania, China, Poland, Kenya, Denmark, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.

HONORS PROGRAM The Honors Program at Malone supports our intellectually gifted and highly motivated students as they respond to Christ’s call to love God with heart, soul, strength, and mind and as they move to transform themselves and their world as followers of Christ.

Beyond offering enriched, challenging academics that encourage students to explore their own interests, you’ll learn with a close group of students who are as excited to succeed as you are.

PEER TuTORING If you need help to reach your full potential in difficult classes, free help is available! Experienced upperclassmen (who have taken the course you’re struggling with) have been trained to help you succeed.

STuDENT RESEARCH SyMPOSIuM Unlike a typical class paper or project, authentic research crosses the boundaries of what is known to create new knowledge. At Malone, students have the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member to formally present their research.

The Malone University Student Research Symposium showcases the creative and academic work of Malone students. Exciting projects from nearly every discipline are part of this celebration of student achievement.

CAREER PREPARATION In our modern, ever-changing world, it is said that today’s college graduates will change not just jobs, but careers an average of five times. Malone’s liberal arts curriculum will equip you with skills necessary to pursue any career—critical thinking, effective communicating, and problem-solving skills regardless of your major.

While you’re still in college, you’ll get real world experience via internships, student teaching, nursing clinicals, community service projects, and more.

Our Center for Student Success provides students with tools and skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond with aptitude analyses, professional development, workshops, and events.

TOP-NOTCH fACuLTy Professors matter when choosing a college, perhaps more than anything else you consider. Why? Your professors are the people who will help you get the most out of your academic experience. They will push you to own your learning and to do your very best. They are men and women of faith who will impact your life in unimaginable ways.

Your professors are well prepared to offer you an outstanding education. Most of our faculty have earned the highest academic degree possible in their field of expertise from some of the best institutions of higher learning in the world. They are recognized experts who present their cutting

edge approaches to teaching and learning at professional conferences throughout the nation and the world.

Finally, our faculty members are real people who will invite you into their lives. Many live near campus and have interesting hobbies and lives outside of teaching such as: early American stoneware, disc golfing, extreme endurance races, serving on boards of service organizations, working with government agencies, bicycling, harvesting wasp and hornet venom, and serving as active pastors.

Come, get to know them, and watch yourself grow!

I feel blessed that I can talk about my faith with my students. It has an everlasting impact on their lives.

#faithAtMaloneAssociate Professor of Nursing Lora Wyss walks the talk. As president and nursing director of the Hartville Migrant Center, she offers a unique opportunity to nursing students in fulfillment of their cross-cultural experience.

Wyss helps educate Malone students about migrants, teaching them about the workers, their families, where they come from, and how working with migrants has shaped her views on important national issues. Under Wyss’ direction, the Migrant Center has sharpened its focus to provide for migrants and their families in the areas of physical health, education, and spiritual health. Of the 400 people living in the migrant camps, approximately 120 are children. Students serving with Wyss at clinicals often join her as volunteers in the summer.

“Getting to know migrants helps students understand that these issues are a whole lot more complex than they originally thought and opens their eyes to what is happening in our world,” said Wyss.

#HandsOnLearningChair of the Department of Education Moses Rumano is living the life of his —and his father’s—dreams.

Born in Zimbabwe, Rumano is extremely passionate about education for all.

“The day I graduated with my teaching license, my father would no longer call me Moses, he called me “teacher” because it was a dream that had come true for him, to be able to raise someone who could become a teacher in this society,” said Rumano.

In Zimbabwe, Rumano established an after-school program for primary and secondary schools to teach students about HIV/AIDS. Now, he’s an external consultant for the program and writes articles, papers, and journals for governments in the sub-south of Africa to explain how a community can come together to help the impoverished or people affected with HIV/AIDS.

In Canton, he initiated a pilot project in Canton City schools in which Malone athletes work with schools in the area, helping high school students who are at risk of dropping out or failing.

#Servicebeth Postlewaite has repeatedly taken the Enactus teams to national competition by modeling leadership and community service with entrepreneurial students at Malone University, particularly with business majors.

The team’s most recent recognition came as a top ten finalist in the Sam’s Club Step Up for Small Business Project Partnership for their efforts on behalf of a local florist. The students also secured a $1,500 grant from Walmart to empower Stark County women seeking employment.

According to Postlewaite, “Enactus is partnering with OhioMeansJobs to provide two workshops to women who are either entering the workforce or changing careers. I am so proud of the Malone University Enactus students and the work that has gone into both projects. They have built amazing and sustainable relationships with members of the business community.”

fAITH e recognize that students arrive at Malone University with different ideas about God. Perhaps you are just beginning to ask questions about faith. Perhaps you are a firm believer in and follower of Jesus Christ, fervently pursuing His plan and purpose for your life. And maybe you fall somewhere in between. Whether you are exploring a newfound faith or are ready to dig deeper into your relationship with God, the Malone experience is designed to meet you where you are in your journey.

At Malone, we believe that faith and knowledge are inextricably bound to one another and should not be compartmentalized or fragmented.

We meet weekly as a campus community for worship. Beyond that, professors and students examine what the Christian faith has to say about a given discipline and what that discipline has to say about the Christian faith. These actions stem from our belief that Christ is known not only through Scripture, the workings of the Holy Spirit, and tradition, but also through the pursuit of knowledge.

Here, faith is not only intertwined with academic pursuits, but throughout the Malone experience—in the classrooms; on the athletic field; in Bible studies and life groups; through numerous planned spiritual formation opportunities; and through conversations with faculty and staff, including our supportive Office of Spiritual Formation staff.

We support students as they explore and develop their beliefs. This environment encourages students to courageously examine what they believe, why they believe it, and to become people of character who turn their faith into action.

OffICE Of SPIRITuAL fORMATION The mission of the Office of Spiritual Formation is to contribute to students’ spiritual growth by building them up to know, love and serve Jesus Christ.

Spiritual formation, as defined by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, “is integral to Christian higher education—it is the biblically-guided process in which people are transformed into the likeness of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit within the faith community in order to love and serve God and others.”

Spiritual Formation staff provide Christian faith development opportunities for individuals and groups in a variety of campus contexts that teach students how to develop a worldview rooted in scripture and how to actively grow in their relationships with God.

SPIRITuAL fORMATION OPPORTuNITIES Spiritual Formation Opportunities (SFOs) are a part of what makes Malone distinctive. A spiritual life is an integrated one; our faith should be lived out in everything we do.

All full-time, traditional undergraduate students attend at least 20 SFOs each semester.

We offer more than 300 SFOs each semester that vary in size, content, depth, and style. The variance is to allow each student the chance to grow as a person, a student, and a follower of Christ.

Weekly SFOs include: Life Groups, Nursing Christian Fellowship, The Story of Us: Our Story in Light of God’s Story, Community Worship, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Celebration, #MUBlessUp, be:Justice, and Morning Prayers.

Page 13: Viewbookproof issue (1)

COMMuNITy WORSHIP Community Worship is a Wednesday morning gathering of the Malone community to worship God through music, Scripture, and a message from an inspiring speaker.

Original Community Worship songs composed by Malone student leaders comprise Community Worship, Volume 1. The album was produced by 25th Street Productions, located on Malone’s campus. The project was written, performed, produced, recorded, engineered, mixed, and mastered by students and young alumni. The album can be downloaded for free at www.maloneworship.bandcamp.com/releases.

LIfE GROuPSLed by faculty and staff members, life groups provide an opportunity for stu-dents with similar interests to gather on a regular basis. They are designed to allow students to receive personal discipleship from individuals with spiritual maturity, experience differing degrees of Christian community, and develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ by studying Scrip-ture, asking questions, and engaging in discussions. View some testimonial videos at www.malone.edu/ spiritual-formation/life-groups.

SPIRITuAL LIfE COMMITTEE Students looking to gain experience in leading ministries and worship have the opportunity to participate in the Spiritual Life Committee. Each year, there are two student co-directors who oversee a team of student leaders who plan, promote, and lead specific SFOs. These include Celebration (our student-led worship service), fellowship of Christian Athletes, Nursing Christian fellowship, and Ichthys (a Catholic life group).

JubILEE CONfERENCE A highlight of the year for many students is the Jubilee Conference. Each spring, nearly 100 Malone students and staff travel to Pittsburgh to join thousands of college students from all over the country to learn how to worship God with their whole lives. Attending Jubilee has been a Malone tradition since the 1980s.

The weekend conference reminds students that God cares about every square inch of His creation—and that includes life as a student as well as our calling and career. Jubilee is designed to help you wrestle deeply with the challenges of being students of Jesus, citizens of His Kingdom, and part of this world. Visit the Jubilee website at www.jubileeconference.com.

SPIRITuALfORMATION

RESOuRCES The Office of Spiritual Formation offers students additional resources such as how to find a local church, how to read the Bible, recommended learning opportunities outside of the academic year, help with addictions, and other information.

rom the day Malone was founded in 1892, strong community has been a core value for daily life. In fact, Malone was strategically positioned in the heart of Canton in 1957, so the University community could serve Stark County on a deeper level. Orientation includes a day that invites first-year students Into the Streets to roll up their sleeves and serve in the community while building new friendships.

Malone’s location also comes with perks! Not only do students have access to the city of Canton, but they also benefit from a bustle of activity around greater Northeast Ohio—including the metropolitan areas of Cleveland and Akron. Whether your hobbies include outdoor recreation, the arts, history, or culture, you won’t be lacking for places to explore.

Life on campus is full of memories to be made. Annual traditions like the Davenport Derby (couch races) and Airband (lip sync competition) are highlights each year. With more than 65 student organizations, you will be able to quickly find your niche on campus. Residence halls are more than a place to sleep, and the dining facilities offer a wide variety of tasty menu items. Unique spaces like Emma’s and Bennett Lounge make campus feel like home. Theatre productions, concerts, and athletic competitions are always ready for a student cheering section.

A vibrant campus life and connection to the offerings in Northeast Ohio offer Malone students the best of both worlds.

ATHLETICS t Malone, we’re Pioneers in every way, including athletics. Our athletic teams are Christ-Centered, Athlete-focused, and Coach-Driven. Pioneer teams proudly compete in the NCAA Div. II in 18 sports and regularly achieve success at the national level.

For many years, Malone’s men’s and women’s cross country teams have finished among the top 10 nationally and earned numerous All-American awards. Coach Jack Hazen enjoys a national reputation having served as leader of the program for more than four decades and serving as the U.S. distance coach at the London Olympic Games in 2012. Our golf program also enjoys national acclaim, competing each year for the national title under the direction of highly regarded and longtime coach Ken Hyland.

Malone student-athletes also enjoy success in areas beyond the field of play. They enjoy the best of both worlds: the opportunity to compete at the highest level of NCAA Div. II while earning a degree through study in a nationally respected academic program. In 2015, the combined grade point average for all Malone athletes was above a 3.0, an impressive achievement by any measure.

Starting in fall 2016, Malone teams will compete in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, an NCAA Div. II league with teams from Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. We look forward to extending the history of success enjoyed by Pioneer student-athletes throughout the institution’s history.

In 2014, our men’s golf team competed in the NCAA final four in its first year of eligibility narrowly missing out on the championship round. Our men’s cross country team finished 9th in the nation, and the women’s team finished 11th. The arts at Malone are open to those who want to participate, whether casually or if you want to build a career by studying the visual and digital arts, theatre, music, music education, or music production. Academic programs for artists and musicians are selective and demanding, but opportunities to simply enjoy art for art’s sake are abundant and inviting.

Malone is a place where beauty is celebrated and embraced, whether it is seen, heard, or felt. Student and faculty art is displayed in a number of campus galleries, and in the larger community at museums, festivals, and events. You’ll be encouraged to participate in the local community Arts in Stark Program—which supports five organizations—Canton Ballet, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Canton Museum of Art, Players Guild Theatre, and Voices of Canton, Inc.

Malone has numerous options for you to participate in the arts. Develop your confidence and enrich your skills by participating in music, visual arts, creative writing, theatre, and film.

Our extracurricular arts program are connected to academic programs and are led by dedicated, talented faculty members, but they are open to non-majors too, meaning you will have the opportunity to perform or create at a high level with your peers.

fILM fESTIVAL The Open Frame includes a film development program which helps students move through the production process just as a professional would. The event culminates in a highly antici-pated festival that screens one night of student-created films to an audience of hundreds. There is an Oscar-style awards presentation after the show.

VISuAL ARTS Malone’s visual arts department is well connected to Canton’s thriving art community. Opportunities exist to explore traditional mediums in paint-ing, drawing, sculpture, and fiber arts as well as growing options in graphic design—even video game design!

THEATRE At larger universities, students may go their entire careers without having the chance to participate in a play or musical. Not at Malone! Two major productions a year mean that every-one can contribute to the excitement of the stage.

Other performance opportunities in-clude Chancel Players drama ministry, 24-Hour Theatre, Ten Minute Play Fes-tival, Dinner Theatre, Improv Comedy, and multiple student productions and projects.

CREATIVE WRITING Malone has a growing community of creative writers. Writers have the chance to share their work at public readings and collaborate with each other and with visual artists.

The Quaker is an undergraduate journal of poetry, fiction, essays, reviews, commentary, videos, and photography. It aims to be a dynamic, relentlessly interesting online magazine in which young writers and artists publish works of intelligence and beauty.

The Malone University Writers Series brings authors of distinction and prom-ise to campus for public readings as well as to work with students.

VALuE he value students gain from an affordable Malone education impacts their futures and the lives of countless others. Today’s Christian family does not have to compromise their values in order to get the best price in higher education.

That value begins and ends with the whole experience: the high quality education, which is enhanced by the commitment to integrating Christian faith and learning. The personal interaction with faculty, staff, and other mentors. Being a part of a Christian community that encourages excellence—whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the concert hall, or serving in the community!

Two questions that are probably on your mind:1) Will I be able to afford a Malone University education?2) Will I be able to find a job in my field when I graduate?

Our Financial Aid staff is eager to help tailor the best financial aid package for your unique situation and needs. With their assistance, you may find that you graduate with about the same debt as if you had attended a public university. A MALONE DEGREE PAyS OffA Malone University education is an investment in your future. It’s an investment that will pay significant dividends in your personal and spiritual growth, and your career path.

According to College Board, during a 40-year full-time working life, the median earnings of bachelor’s degree recipients without an advanced degree are 65% higher than the median earnings of high school graduates.

Our graduates impact the world every day through their professional achievements, leadership, and living the values of Christ’s Kingdom First.

fOLLOWING THEIR CALLINGSHere are a few examples of how some of our recent alums are living out what they learned at Malone.

#faithAtMaloneFor Dishon Kamwesa ’10, his nursing career and his faith completely intertwine.

Kamwesa was honored as Mercy Medical Center’s 2014 ‘Cameo of Caring’ recipient, an honor reserved for Mercy’s most excellent employees. Within a week of passing the NCLEX exam, an RN position opened up at Mercy (where Kamwesa previously interned) and he accepted the job. For the past year, he has served as an oncology/infusion nurse in the Outpatient Infusion Center. Malone has prepared Kamwesa to provide holistic care to his patients.

“I am not just taking care of a patient with a disease, but I also am taking care of that person’s spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs as much as I can.”

#HandsOnLearningWhat does flying across the country with an armadillo and an African bush baby, teaching exotic cats to jump in the air, and Kathie Lee Gifford have in common? A Malone graduate, one of the youngest avian trainers in the world, Jake belair ’15. During the summer of 2014, the Akron native interned at the Conservation Ambassadors Zoo (a private zoo in Paso Robles, California), an opportunity made possible by his previous internship at the respected Columbus Zoo. “Most of my focus has been on training animals,” Belair said.

“Our animal education programming led to a trip to the Today Show with staff from Sea World. It was a tremendous experience.”

Belair credits Malone for giving him the hands-on experience that made his dreams possible.“I would not find the opportunities I’ve had at Malone at any other institution. I’ve had the chance to make a difference here with our animal collection, and to work closely with faculty who have been very supportive.”

Belair was hired by the Nashville Zoo before graduation.

#ServiceIssues of social justice are of utmost importance to Kelsey Case ’14, who currently lives with five adults with developmental disabilities in Florida. Case is responsible for caring for their every need and helping them carry out their daily tasks. Much of her inspiration comes from the example set by Henri Nouwen, who worked on behalf of L’Arche—an international philanthropic organization which aids individuals with developmental disabilities in Trosly-Breuil, France. Nouwen’s life and writings had a profound effect on Case’s worldview.

“I told myself when I graduated from college that I wanted to spend at least a year living with a vibrant group of people so I could have an opportunity to learn from them,” said Case. “They are all very patient with me and welcoming. It’s very justice-oriented … very beautiful.”
