James Burmeister  Office: FAM 151/Art 272Office hours: Posted on the office door or by appointmentE-mail: [email protected]    Office Phone: (414) 793.5956       Course description: The course is designed to develop the student's skills at reading and playing choral, band and orchestral scores at the piano. Beginning exercises using multiple clefs in two voices and progressing to four voices will prepare the student for playing full choral, band and orchestral scores.

The final project for the semester will involve playing a portion of a major orchestral work at the piano in a manner that demonstrates the students understanding of instrumental transpositions and performance tempos and interpretation. The final selection should be based on the student's piano proficiency and the usefulness in their future career and must be approved by the instructor.

Prerequisites: Music Major - Graduate student (Upper class undergraduates with permission of the instructor)Piano proficiency to the level of Classical period sonatas 

Required Text: Music for Score Reading - Melcher & Warsch (available through the instructor)

Course Objectives: Ability to play at the piano musical scores using multiple clefs (including

soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass clefs) Ability to play a portion of an orchestral and/or choral score at the piano using

the full score Ability to develop a piano reduction of an orchestral score incorporating

important melodic lines and supporting harmonic and rhythmic components Ability to sing various parts of an orchestral score while conducting

Grading: The student's grade will be based on daily class preparation/participation and final project.

Credit Hour Policy: (Specific information on the investment of time by the average student necessary for achievement of the learning goals of this course in accordance with the campus credit hour policy.)

“Study leading to three semester credits represents an investment of time by the average student of not fewer than 120 hours for class contact in lectures, for laboratories, examinations, tutorials and recitations, and for preparation and study; or a demonstration by the student of learning equivalent to that established as the expected product of such a period of study.”

Attendance: As each student performs the assigned exercises at each class meeting, attendance is vital to developing the skills required to successfully complete the objectives of the course.
