Proceeds fund a scholarship program at the University of North Florida Engineering School. Our financial success here is a direct result of the hard work of our golf committees over the years. This year's committee lead by Ross Urso of Outsource Logistics is no exception, and the 2004 event produced the greatest revenue to date. Our goal is to reach a $100,000 endowment, allowing state matching funds. To date we will have contributed $30,000 toward the endowment. We have also provided 2 scholarships annually for the past 6 years to upper division engineering students. This is an example of the strong partnership between the manufacturing community and our university system that we want to strengthen. You can help in the following ways: 1. $100,000 Endowment: We encourage you to earmark a portion of your charitable giving to our UNF scholarship fund. Because of the state match, you will have the opportunity to see a $1 contribution immediate grow to $2. I would like to see us reach our $100,000 level in the next three years. 2. UNF Internships: The school will place students in companies either for specific project work or to learn the engineering trade. Civil, electrical, mechanical and computer science students can be used to help your company. The added bonus is a relationship that could lead to long term employment for these gifted young people. 3. Equipment: The new engineering school needs equipment for its labs. Specifically, we at FCMA should take responsibility for helping equip the machine shop with older generation shop machinery. Dean Coulter wants beginning engineering students to understand the complexities of engineering through hands-on experience using equipment that is less computer driven. He finds today's students well versed in computer technology, but less knowledgeable of how products are made. Let's fill his machine shop by September 1. This is an excellent way to get rid of older equipment and receive a tax break. I strongly believe that the long-term success of the First Coast will be accomplished through the advent of a strong engineering computer science program at local universities. I look forward to seeing you at the June 28 General Membership meeting at UNF and to your helping us accomplish our goals for the UNF Engineering School.

Success in LeanFCMA continues to score successes in its Lean Consortium. Members in the consortium are sharing training opportunities and we are preparing for our next visit by Lean Sensei International. Our goal is to roll out our second lean consortium in 2005 for our associate members.

In addition to the consortium, FCMA kicked off its first event with Florida Manufacturing Extension Partnership with an overview of ISO quality systems. The day-long, hands-on Lean 101 session scheduled for June 2 has sold out, but will be repeated in September. On June 3, Florida MEP will present an overview on Lean Sigma.

We encourage you to take advantage of these workshop opportunities!

May Government RelationsOur guest this month was Aage Schroder, District Two Secretary for the Florida Dept. of Transportation. He shared information on upcoming projects in our area and discussed the budget allocation process. He emphasized the fact that the needs of our area (region and state) are greater than the funds allocated. We need a bigger piece of the federal budget because of our population growth. Members are encouraged to write their congressmen and senators encouraging a more fair distribution based on need.

Host Tracy Jackson of Dean Foods (l), Aage Schroder, and committee Chair Mary O'Brien of Advanced Disposal.

Environmental Health & SafetyOur guest in April was Janice Eggleton Davis, director of the City of Jacksonville's Environmental Resources Management Department. The committee has formed a taskforce to work with the ERMD, formerly RESD.
