profipress l ii 2500 gluing press: increased performance and flexibility for solid wood panel production

Productivity and flexibility are increasingly determining factors for the day-to-day operations of workshop businesses. Unfortunately,

this often pushes conventional technologies beyond their limits. The same is true when it comes to laminating solid wood lamellae. However, simplifying and automating process sequences can achieve significant improve-ments in efficiency. High-tech processes such as high-frequency har-dening improve the quality of the end product but the greatest benefit is seen in terms of profitability. And, of course, the space situation in the workshop is also important. The PPL II 2500 gluing press

Most workshop businesses still use star presses or frame presses for gluing solid wood. however, an automated solution such as the ppl ii 2500 from Weinig dimter is well worth considering

ProfiPress L II 2500 Basic: Compact gluing press with manual front loading

Flexible roller glue application with top pressure

from Weinig Dimter has been specially designed for these conditions while also offer-ing the advantage of simple use in efficient one-man operation. The ma-chine comes into its own where star and frame presses require labor-intensive

manual work. Here, the horizontal construction of the PPL II 2500 with horizontal press bed constitutes a clear advantage. The labo-rious charging of different work levels required by older technologies is a thing of the past. Also, the individual lamellae do not need to be fixed or clamped. Depending on the level of equipment, in the particularly com-pact Basic or Comfort version the wood is simply front-loaded or laid on the feed table and fed to the press bed. The press bed is emptied auto-matically via a clearing strip or conveyor belt. The machine can be oper-ated either via two-hand operation or a touchscreen. Different processes are also available for gluing according to requirements. The basic version offers roller glue application from a rolling gluing station. Powered and synchronized infeed and outfeed

transport ensure even glue application and prevent smearing. The feed speed is adjustable, allowing it to be easily adapted to work and cycle times. The first step towards further rationalization is semi-automatic glue application. The main benefit of this is simple handling of the lamellae via a conveyor belt. The resulting precise glue application ensures a reduction in glue consumption of up to 50 per cent. As an option, the press bed can be loaded via conveyor belt. This enables simultaneous charging and emptying, enabling the machine’s capacity to be increased, particularly in multi-lane operation. At the top end of the equipment options is automatic glue application with subsequent fully-automatic layer formation of the glued lamellae. Even pressure ensures that the gluing press achieves particularly high gluing quality. The layers of lamellae are fixed via pressure plates, which are simply inserted into the press bed. Fixing with screws or similar aids is not necessary. The press bed is raised and lowered hydraulically. The press cylinders can be switched on and off separately via a control panel with selector switches. The pressing cycle takes upwards of one minute depending on the wood and glue types.

The Die PPL II 2500 Comfort can be upgraded to a simple and efficient high-frequency press at little expense.

Press bed with easily interchangeable pressure plates for various gluing heights

ProfiPress L II 2500 Comfort: High-end version of the gluing press with fully-automatic layer formation

High-frequency hardening as an option for optimal quality of the end product

Depending on the wood, glue and product, the press can produce up to 400 sq m of solid wood panels per shift. The intelligent high-frequency (HF) hardening is characterized by the fact that only the joints are heated. The wood retains its temperature and remains free from tension.

The standard version of the PPL II 2500 can press panels with a width

between 1,150 and 1,350 mm and a length of 400 to 2,500 mm in a sin-gle run. Lamella thicknesses of 10 to 60 mm can be processed. With the 90 mm thickness option, the maximum press force is 240 kN. Required connections are 6 – 8 bar for compressed air and 400 V/ 50 HZ for elec-tricity.

The Weinig Dimter gluing press achieves maximum value creation across a wide variety of applications. The machine is used in the produc-tion of furniture as well as fitted kitchens, table plates and general interior fittings. Staircases, doors and frames can also be produced on the gluing press. With its different levels of equipment, the press can be ideally adapted to individual requirements through to the ultimate discipline of HF gluing.

MAChINErY & SuPPlIES: NEW DEVEloPMENtS

grecon density profile Measuring system stenogRaph now even more efficient and easier to maintain

Recently GreConhad introduced the new raw density

profile measuring system STENOGRAPH at the

IWF 2016 fair in Atlanta (USA). The new GreCon

STENOGRAPH can reliably measure the raw density

profile of MDF panels inline from a thickness of

6 mm up to a thickness of 42 mm. Thanks to an improved

software and a construction that is even easier to maintain, the

STENOGRAPH that is already established in numerous wood

based panel plants is now even more efficient and robust.

The control unit can be installed at a distance from the

production line. A user-friendly touch panel facilitates the

operation of the system. The visualisation of measured data was

adapted to the layout that is typical of GreCon systems which

makes understanding and interpretation much easier.

The STENOGRAPH is working in a non-contact way and is

usually installed at the press outlet where it measures the raw

density profile in only a few seconds. A focused X-ray penetrates

the moving endless panel at an angle of 45° and is measured in

two positions: a stationary detector determines the transmitted

radiation intensity, a moving detector measures the scattered

radiation. The density-dependent values are combined in such

a way that a density value can be allocated to each point of the

panel cross section.

The raw density profile is one of the central material

characteristics of wood based panels. The STENOGRAPH

provides important information for the specific influence of the

characteristics of wood based panels by reliably measuring the

raw density profile.

huge interest in swedish Wood at furniture fair in Western china

Chengdu, capital of the Sichuan province, has grown at a fast pace, and is considered one of the leading cities for investment in inland China. Chengdu is now the third largest area for furniture manufacture and the fourth largest for furniture distribution in China. Chengdu’s urban area has 10 million inhabitants and the Sichuan province has 80 million.

“The Chinese furniture industry is a key export market for sawn wood products from Sweden and the region around Chengdu has great development potential for our members, although a great deal of work still needs to be done to build up the market for Swedish wood in the region. One conclusion from the fair is that, while interest in Swedish wood is strong in the region, knowledge levels are low,” says Charlotte Dedye Apelgren, Director of Interior and Design at Swedish Wood.

The 17th International Furniture Manufacturing & Supply Fair (IFFC) was held in Chengdu in July. The fair was divided into two events: the first on 3–6 July involved the furniture manufacturers and a target audience of furniture retailers, while the second on 12–15 July had a focus on materials, components and machinery for the manufacture of furniture. Swedish Wood exhibited at both these events.

The Swedish Wood stand had a display of furniture in

Swedish pine created by Chinese designers, along with samples showing different surface finishes achieved on Swedish pine and spruce by brushing, painting, varnishing and staining the wood.

“In presenting concrete examples of furniture and finishes, we wanted to inspire the Chinese furniture industry to use solid Swedish coniferous wood in its production. The trade fair visitors showed huge interest in the pine furniture and surface finishes, and many went up to touch and feel the displayed items. Wood is unique in the way it encourages handling and is warm and pleasant to the touch,” continues Charlotte Dedye Apelgren.

The Swedish Wood stand also presented information on the high quality of Swedish wood and on sustainable Swedish forestry. In addition, the stand had areas set aside for business discussions between the representatives from the Swedish sawmill companies and potential Chinese customers. The following member companies were represented on the Swedish Wood stand: Bergkvist Insjön, Holmen, Martinsons, Norrskog Wood Products, SCA, Setra Group and Södra.

About Swedish wood exports to ChinaExports of coniferous wood from Sweden to China have

risen steadily in recent years. 2011 was the first year that saw exports exceed 100,000 m3 and since then the figure has grown year on year. In 2015 exports amounted to 530,000 m3 and this year they are expected to reach over 700,000 m3.

China is judged to be one of the markets with the greatest potential for Swedish sawn wood products. Most of the Swedish sawmill companies export to China, and several of the biggest companies have local sales offices in the country.

For more information:Charlotte Dedye Apelgren, Director of Interior and Design, Swedish Wood - +46 70 661 78 81Email: [email protected]

having been active for many years in china’s east coast cities such as shanghai and guangzhou, the industry organisation swedish Wood has now taken part in a furniture fair in the inland city of chengdu, in Western china. chengdu is a potentially important growth area for swedish sawmill exports and the aim of swedish Wood’s stand at the fair was to inspire and inform the chinese furniture industry about swedish wood and to create new contacts between them and representatives from swedish sawmill companies.

Making of Modular furniture on nano scale - a practical guide for interior designers

Making of Modular Furniture on Nano Scale for small batch production

Many of the Interior design firms are making Modular furniture as per their designs and they are always in lookout how they can make it fast, uniform and good finish with low investment. They do not want to invest more as they are not mass producers but their requirements are few sets per project. Few of them also need to make the furniture on little larger scale as their projects are of larger area spreading on few thousand sq. meters. hence I have decided to write a series of articles for each of the segments depending on quantity and flexibility. The series of articles will cover making of “Modular Furniture from Nano scale to industrial scale”. I will strive to present these articles which should serve as a practical guide to small, medium and large scale manufacturers.

We observe that manufacturing

Modular furniture is a time consuming

process unless some equipment are

used in the making process. Sturdiness

and stability are the main problems

faced in hand made modular furniture.

Carpenters have tried to use the same

methods of making that they have used in

manufacturing Furniture using Plywood

while making MDF / Chipboard Furniture.

Important point to note - Plywood

and Chipboard /MDF are two different

materials with different properties,

advantages, limitations etc.

Strength and stability are the

main criteria on which the Modular

Entire world is using Chip Board /

MDF as main raw material for Modular

Furniture and India is the only country

where use of plywood in furniture making

is promoted that is why we see the

advertisements telling that the kitchen is

made from Marine Plywood.

MDF/Chipboard is the stable,

balanced and smooth surface material

available in various grades including

waterproof, water resistant and fire

resistant, hollow core etc.

It should be understood that the

Plywood can be screwed- nailed on edges

where as it is not possible in case of MDF

/ Chipboard. But there are different and

better ways to use Chipboard / MDF

whereas you can manufacture a nail- free

Furniture made across India/Gulf in

MDF/ Chipboard fails in many cases. It

is often believed by architects & interior

designers that MDF is sawdust (Bhuse ka

board) board furniture that MDF furniture

has no strength and so they feel that Ply

wood furniture is the best one. But this

is totally misleading belief. The main

fault in Modular Furniture made across

India/Gulf by small producers starts from

wrong choice of material and further lies

in

• Inappropriate use of manufacturing

process,

• Lack of precision

• Selection of right hardware.

furniture. You should bear in mind that

the use of Chipboard / MDF in on rise

across the Globe and the use of Plywood

in Furniture making is on diminishing.

Leading furniture manufacturers

across the Globe have understood the

advantages of Chipboard / MDF material

and shifted to using it in their products

and adapted suitable manufacturing

process. The process of manufacturing

is different for each of the material like

MDF, Chipboard, Hollow core board etc.

Wrong methods used in making

modular furniture with Particle board

and MDF is the main reason for defects

in Modular furniture made in India/Gulf.

In this article we will consider Making

of Modular Furniture on Nano Scale

for small batch production. This setup

will need an investment that can range

from Rs. 2 lakh to 5 Rs. lakh depending

on the equipment you choose. In the

market portable equipment are available

in hobby grade and industrial grade. The

hobby grade if used for longer working

hours with heavy load conditions then

the motor will burn. Hence we see many

users have couple of burned equipment

in their factory. Hobble equipment

are cheaper hence they are used for

Industrial use that is causing the work

stoppage. For this reason selection of

Industrial scale equipments is suggested

for uninterrupted work.

The main operations in making of

modular furniture are namely Panel

cutting, edge banding and boring.

Track Saw (Photo courtesy Dewalt)

The economic solution for Pre

laminated board cutting is Portable saw

with scoring and Guide rail. The scoring

blade will assure chip free cutting

from bottom side and the guiding rail

will guarantee straight cutting of the

board. One should take precautions that

accurate mounting of the guiding rail

is done so that no rework is needed.

Track saws are available from many

Portable tool manufacturers and can be

Profile cutting jig using portable router (Photo courtesy Klein Sistemi)

In case of round table tops or oval shaped table tops one has to use a portable

router with circle / oval cutting jig as showed in the above picture. One should use

Melamine faced Chip Board / MDF instead of solid wood as shown in the above picture.

This jig is universal for both MDF & solid wood.

The accurately sized component is ready for edge banding. The economic solution

for edge banding is the use of Portable edge bander. The edge bander can be either hand

held or mounted on table that makes the working easy. The machine is supplied with

accessories like trimmers and end cutters for smoother finish.

easily searched on Internet. Tracks are available in various lengths suitable to every

application. The quality of the track plays a vital role in the quality of the cut. The track

is made from hardened and ground aluminum alloy. Some companies provide silicon

linear bearings to avoid friction and impart longer life to the track rail.

Brush less portable tools like saws, saw with scoring, routers and drills – drivers

are available. They are bit costly but long lasting. They are free from the fear of armature

burning.

The above picture shows the portable edge bander. In the bellow picture the same machine is mounted on table.

The edge bander is using hot melt

glue adhesive to bond the edges with

board. The machine has a temperature

controller. One should set the temperature

properly as per glue specifications. Do

not keep higher temperature that will

result in weaker bonding. Accurate

temperature gives longer life to the glue.

Frequent heating and cooling of the glue

also reduces the bonding strength of

the glue. The edge banding tape has to

be pre cut to the required length. The

machine does not have cutting device.

Enough pressure has to be applied on the tape to assure good bonding and thin glue line. If proper pressure is not applied then one will see a thick glue line which will have weaker bonding causing pealing of the edge banding tape. Normally the edge banding tape is 3 to 4 mm wider than the thickness of the board. The excess material is trimmed off after edge banding.

In winter season the PVC tapes tend to become hard. In case of 3 mm thick tapes many times it becomes very difficult to bend it to edge band. One has to pre heat the tape with hot air blower or hair drier to make it flexible – soft.

Trimmers are used to trim the excess edge material

The excess tape is removed by using

trimmers with copying device. The tool

is set properly so that the edges become

smooth. Profile cutters are used to give

round edges as per the thickness of

the edge. Proper re-sharpening assures

smooth finish.

One can also do the edge banding

with matching HPL strips. Trimming is

done is the same manner as tapes using

electric trimmer.

In case of thinner edge bands one can

trim the excess material with sharp knife.

Both side trimmer knife holder

End cutting knife

One should replace the knives once

these become blunt or when the trimming

finish starts to become rough and not

very smooth. This is very important to

get high quality finished product. The

above-mentionedtrimmers can be used

for edges up to 1 mm thick edges. Special

tools are available for thicker edges.

After proper edge banding one

needs to drill holes to accommodate the

hardware and dowels etc. For small batch

work it is suggested to have drilling jigs

shown in the picture. There are many

companies like Kreg Tool Co, General

tools, True position Drill Guide etc.

These jigs can be used to drill holes

Special holders are available to clamp the

knives for easy and safe working.

One can use KREG drilling jig for the cabinet joinery with screws only. The structure becomes very strong after joining all the components together.

While drilling holes on side panels

one should remember that screwing

should be done on the flat surface of the

panel and not on the THICKNESS. There

are special screws used for Chipboard

/ MDF furniture/ solid wood etc. Proper

selection of the screw is done as per

the guidance of the supplier. Step

drill is used to impart strong joint of

components. Proper length of the screw

is selected depending upon the thickness

of the panel.

The Kreg jigs can be used for solid

wood picture / mirror frames but not

MDF / Chipboard frames.

eumabois at Xylexpo 2016

Xylexpo was held from 24 to 28 May 2016 in Milan at the fieramilano expo center. It was a major event for industry professionals in the woodworking technology business. For the first time in Italy, Eumabois decided to organize a collective area in collaboration with fieramilano for the exhibitions supported by the Federation.

The initiative was very helpful for all the organizers involved, who could distribute

their promotion brochures inside the area. The meeting area hosted several meetings and visitors could find all information and materials about the most important international exhibitions at one stand.

Once again, the Eumabois collective area has proved to be an effective marketing tool for the European association, that will implement similar initiatives in the future, for sure at Ligna 2017, but possibly also in other locations in the medium term.Press info: Carlo Alberto [email protected]

green building’s leed credit promotes sustainable forestry

The green building movement – from architects and builders to specifiers and planners - can now benefit from an expanded range of responsibly sourced timber and forest products eligible for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has just issued an Alternative Compliance Path (ACP). The ACP rewards building projects that use “wood products from certified sources as defined by ASTM D7612-10”, which includes internationally recognized voluntary forest certification standards

such as PEFC (including its North American based members ATFS, CSA and SFI) and FSC. The ACP will apply to all LEED v4 rating systems including Homes v4 and to all LEED 2009 rating systems.“Sustainable, PEFC-certified timber provides architects and the construction industry with great opportunities,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International.“The possibilities are rather exciting in addressing challenges such as climate change, growing populations and urbanization, especially as wood offers innovative building solutions with a minimal environmental footprint.”With LEED now including PEFC, construction projects can in the future obtain both LEED and PEFC Project Chain of Custody certification.“The construction industry is one of the largest buyers of timber products - this means the sector has a huge influence on the type of timber in demand,” emphasized Mr. Gunneberg. “With PEFC-certified timber offering the widest choice of sustainable timber available to architects, specifiers and designers, we are poised to see an increase of wood used in construction.”Wood is an increasingly popular choice for construction because of its aesthetic qualities, and numerous environmental benefits - including renewability and a lower carbon footprint than other materials. Forest certification provides evidence that wood originates from sustainable managed forests.PEFC, the world’s leading forest certification system, is recognized by green building councils globally and has received top scores in independent evaluations, for example by the UK government.(Source: www.pefc.org)

• China Water-Borne Furniture Paint and Coating SeminarFMC and WBCP will host the “China Water-Borne Furniture Paint

and Coating Seminar” on the scene of the exhibition. The 13th Five-Year Plan puts forward the requirements for seven key industries on the total emission reduction of coating VOCs, which for the furniture manufacturing industry should reach more than 50%. According to the report released by the WBCP last year, the water-borne coating for wood only accounted for 5%, with a very lower proportion of sales at less than 50,000 tons. The conference will focus on addressing various challenges “oil replaced by water” faces and their counter measures, and invite leading furniture enterprises succeeding in application of water-borne coating to join the discussion and exchange. A series of water-borne coating forums enable the combination of online lecture and offline forum, powering the high-speed development of China’s green furniture business.
