Sermon Series: Life Is Messy
Staying Alive
Luke 24:50-53
Vienna Presbyterian Church
A Disciple-Making Community
April 28, 2013
Sunday Worship 8:00, 9:30, & 11:00
Prelude (9:30 & 11) Joyful Noise
Jesus, Name Above All Names
Prayer of Adoration Patricia Bronson
Crown Him with Many Crowns Bridges, Thring, Elvey, arr. Galbraith
Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne.
Hark! how the heav'nly anthem drowns all music but its own!
Awake, my soul, and sing of Him Who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.
Crown Him the Lord of life who triumphed o'er the grave;
Who rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save.
His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.
Crown Him! Crown Him! Crown Him the Lord over all!
Crown Him! Crown Him! Crown Him the Lord over all! (Repeat)
Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time,
Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou has died for me;
Thy Praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. © 2006 PraiseCharts CCLI License #206597
Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon Lisa Baltzer
By His Wounds
He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our sins.
The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,
And by His wounds, by His wounds we are healed. (Repeat)
(Chorus) We are healed by Your sacrifice, and the life that You gave.
We are healed for You paid the price; by Your grace we are saved, We are saved.
He was pierced for our transgressions, and crushed for our sins.
The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds,
by His wounds we are healed. (Chorus)
He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our sins.
The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, And by His wounds, by His wounds we are healed.
And by His wounds, by His wounds
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O Happy Day
The greatest day in history, death is beaten; You have rescued me.
Sing it out, Jesus is alive; The empty cross, the empty grave.
Life eternal, You have won the day; Shout it all, Jesus is alive.
He's alive.
(Chorus:) Oh happy day, happy day; You washed my sin away.
Oh happy day, happy day; I'll never be the same; Forever I am changed.
When I stand, in that place; Free at last, meeting face to face.
I am Yours, Jesus You are mine; Endless joy and perfect peace.
Earthly pain finally will cease; Celebrate Jesus is alive.
He's alive.
(Bridge:) Oh what a glorious day; what a glorious way.
That You have saved me; Oh what a glorious day;
What a glorious name; Jesus!
Benediction

Step 1: Get Started: Fill out the Friendship Pad in the pews during the service and we will contact you to
help you get connected at VPC and answer any questions you may have. You are also invited to visit the
Welcome Table in the narthex for a gift, and then visit the Great Hall for coffee between 8-11am.
Step 2: Get Oriented: Orientation to the Journey class is an opportunity to look at who we are as a church,

Step 3: Get Going: Invitation to the Journey class is a more in-depth look at our mission, beliefs, values, and
practices. Discover what we mean by “learning to follow Jesus with your life” and “living your life as
Jesus would.” Please go to viennapres.org/firststeps for information and to register, or contact Linda
Kemple (x100). Next classes: fall 2013.
Step 4: Get Connected: Share the Journey! Being part of a group or community to grow in Christ,
connecting with others, and serving is critical to our faith development. We would love to help you find the
best place for you! For more information contact Shannon at [email protected] or call

Renewing Prayer Ministry
Renewing Prayer relies on Jesus to replace emotional pain in our lives with
his perfect peace. Renewing Prayer is not about advice giving, diagnosing problems, or sharing
opinions. It is about inviting prayer recipients to have a personal, transforming, renewing
encounter with the Lord Jesus.
Join us for an informational meeting at noon on Sunday, April 28 or May 5, in Room 108A (off
the Great Hall) to find out more about this ministry.
Find out more about Road to Renewal Prayer Ministry:
What: Join us for Q&A regarding renewing prayer, and light refreshments.
When: Sundays April 28 and May 5, from noon to 1:00 pm.
Where: Vienna Presbyterian Church in Room 108 A&B (off the Great Hall).
Introducing the Renewing Prayer Team
The Road to Renewal Prayer team follows the principles and guidelines of Renewing Prayer. Each prayer minister has had at least 1 year of training and mentorship under the teaching of experienced prayer ministers who have been praying this model for at least 10 years. They also have received and continue to receive this prayer for themselves. The following are currently trained Renewal Prayer ministers: Becky Shenefiel, Chris Shenefiel, Leslie Vereide, Lisa Baltzer, Patricia Bronson, Mike Bronson, Chris Dowell, and Glenda Simpkins Hoffman.
Road-to-Renewal Prayer Ministers:
• come alongside you in prayer to help you realize what beliefs are triggering your painful
emotions;
• depend on you and the Holy Spirit to guide and direct the prayer session;
• do not require you to explore or reveal anything that you don’t want to share;
• only ask you about what you believe and feel during prayer;
• honor your privacy by not revealing anything about your prayer time to others;
• resist giving you guidance, counsel, interpretations, or recommended actions since renewing prayer is about receiving renewal from the Holy Spirit we are not
counselors; and
• operate under the authority and blessing of the pastoral leadership of Vienna
Presbyterian Church.
For more information, go to viennapres.org/healingprayer or pick up a
brochure. To schedule an appointment, contact Glenda Simpkins Hoffman
at 703.938.9050 x114.
